We booked with Southeast Sea Kayaks before our Alaskan cruise. We also booked the combo package of kayaking and sea plane (Carlin Air) tour of Misty Fjords National Monument. Our family consisted of four inexperienced kayakers, ages 8, 14, 45 and 47. Making adventurous plans far in advance always sounds fun but when you get there family members can get quite apprehensive. ALL OF THE EMPLOYEE'S, from the greeter we met at the office, to the person who took us by boat to Orcas Cove, to the two gentlemen who took us by the hand, literally, to instruct us on our kayaks were nothing but professional, warm, friendly and did nothing but ensure we had a safe and memorable adventure. Our guide even plucked star fish from the water and handed them to our children, an unexpected humpback splashed in the area, bald eagles watched us from shore, and the sheer beauty of our surroundings were nothing shy of spectacular. The kayaks are safe, sturdy and no experience required and you'll be in great hands - No worries. We were issued keepsake water bottles and dined on a salmon snack - When you didn't think the day could possibly get any better our pilot drove up to our boat in a float plane, we easily climbed aboard for an unbelievably smooth take off and smooth and safe flight to Misty Fjords National Monument. We were the only ones landing on a lake and we jumped out on a small rock island, listened to quietness, smelled fresh air and admired the sheer beauty of mother nature. After numerous photographs we were back up in the air, touching down in the harbor where our cruise ship was docked. Carlin Air brought us back to the cruise. From a family who is not necessarily the most religious, we thank you ever so much for sharing a truly spiritual adventure.

We traveled from Key Largo all the way to Alaska and took a Princess Cruise Line trip in Sept 2012. We wanted a unique and away from the crowd experience in Ketchikan - so we researched ahead of time and found locals/guides strongly suggesting Southeast Sea Kayak. We booked the 1/2 day Orca Cove trip - which only takes 6 reservations so book early! From the port we were outfitted accordingly and then zipped in a little boat far away from the crowds. No cruise ships, no people...nothing but raw beauty. Then...we entered a small cove off an island and saw our "mothership" parked with the kayaks. We hopped on board, got in the kayaks, and off we went for our journey. Orca Cove is absolutely beautiful - part of the Tongass National Forrest and an actual rainforest. Who would think - a rainforest in Alaska! We saw seals, bald eagles, waterfalls, historic native drawings, incredible trees, streams and endless beauty. We took our time paddling which helped us engage in this amazing place. We were educated by our fantastic guide Rob. When we got back to the "mothership" we were treated to fresh smoked salmon and hot tea - what a touch after a long kayak! I could have sat out there for days - it is truly amazing. If you want to get away from the shopping/crowds in Ketchikan - look no further and book here. Thanks again to Rob and the team that hooked us up that day. We can't wait to get back - and will book no one other than Southeast Sea Kayak.

First, just because it's named Orca's Cove does not guarantee you will see orcas. Some people in our group were surprised it's just the name of the place. And no, Southeast Sea Kayaks did not choose the name of the location so they are not responsible for what you do or do not see on the trip. Now for the review - Amber was a wonderful guide and made sure everyone stayed together. She went at a pace everyone could keep up with easily, and pointed out interesting things like the starfish along the way. The company met us, and got us fitted with life jackets and waterproof gear before we headed out on a boat to meet the boat with the kayaks in the cove. They were very careful to help us in and out of the kayaks safely. The kayaks are steered by the feet of the person in the back, but I found it easier to just use the paddles to steer. Overall it was a very fun and interesting tour.
Note to people like me who worry about feeling claustrophobic with the spay skirt keeping you in the kayak - the skirt is incredibly easy to remove if needed, and I never felt constricted. All my worries before the trip were unfounded, and I enjoyed it a lot.

We've done a good amount of family kayaking (two 50'ish parents & 3 teen boys), and our guided trip through Orcas Cove with Southeast Sea Kayaks is the best we've ever had. Our guide was relaxed and so pleasant, but also very professional and well-informed about with the local flora & fauna - holding a Moon jellyfish being one highlight that she offered us. The beauty of the Cove was the real superstar, and she helped us appreciate all of it - leaping salmon & swooping eagles included.
The owners were excellent communicators (confirming emails & phone calls being very reassuring) & great folks to chat with. The salmon "snack" (feast) at the end of our day was AMAZING! This was absolutely the best day of our 2 weeks in Alaska.

Neither my husband or me have ever kayaked before and Alaska seemed like the perfect place. We booked through Southeast Sea Kayaks, a family owned business. There were great to deal with via internet. Our trip was almost cancelled due to weather but 2 hours later we were able to go. We chose the Orca Cove excursion. we were completely outfitted in rain gear to start off with, and then the final kayak apron was given to us just before getting into the kayak. I had some difficulty getting into the pontoon boat from the bigger boat because I could not see the very tiny steps on the side of the larger boat. But there was an Australian gentlemen waiting for me in that little white boat, helping me all the way. Both he and the guide, Tess, got me into that kayak and explained everything I needed to do. I shared the kayak with my husband. It was a beautiful setting and while we hoped to see some whales, they were not accommodating that day! However, we saw several eagles, one of which flew by at eye level with us. I was clearly able to see his golden eye and beak about 50ft away. Awesome. We were able to see lots of orange Lion Jellyfish, and purple and orange-ish starfish. It rained most of the time, so trying to keep my camera dry was an issue but I just stuffed it in my vest. One IMPORTANT recommendation...bring or wear a ball cap. My rain hood was large and it kept covering my eyes but I had to use it. The other family that was with us had on ball caps and it kept their hoods up and they also kept rain from dripping from the rain hood. It was a great experience and by the time we finished and got back into the bigger boat, a DELICIOUS salmon snack plate was waiting for us. So good that we purchased a case of it from Southeast Sea Kayaks and they shipped it. (one last item...being short and a little heavy, I had a hard, but comical time getting out to the kayak. I was tired, and lifting myself up and out of it was a struggle. Again the Australian gentlemen was right there and eased my embarrassment with some very cute comments about my 'method' of getting up and out. My husband, in the back was hysterical)

This was a highlite of our trip. The people in the company are really excellent to deal with. The scenery is awsome! We didn't really even come close to seeing any whales - a little deceiving from a kayak trip in "Orca Cove" - but we weren't disappointed because there was a lot of other things to take in. It really is a beautiful paddle, so I doubt you'd be let down!

Our recent kayak trip, guided by Robert, was one of the highlights of our entire Alaskan visit. We paddled around Orcas Cove at our pace, while he shared history and lure of the area -- sights that were awe-inspiring. We had incredible views of seals and a breaching humpback whale that you could only get from a kayak. Greg and Robert provided all we needed for an exceptional and most memorable experience. I can't imagine anything they could have done better to make the afternoon more wonderful. It's a day you will never forget. If you are thinking about kayaking while in Alaska, you must do it here!

I can't say enough nice things about this company and its employees. Paddling with them was one of the best things of an already great vacation!
I researched and booked Southeast Sea Kayaks directly for an excursion during our cruise to Ketchikan. Their reviews were great and they were much cheaper than similar ones through the cruise line. Our guide, Mariana, met us right at the dock and led us on a brief walk to their floating office. After getting our gear, we took an approximately 20 minute high speed ride to Orca Cove, our paddling location, where the "mother ship" with the kayaks was anchored. An efficient instruction demo was given and we were off in two-person kayaks.
There were four of us plus the guide. My wife and I are experienced kayakers but the non-experienced couple were just as comfortable as we were. Mariana led us along the gorgeous islands pointing out the richness of the tidal zone. We saw sea stars, anemones, jelly fish and other marine life.
Then, Mariana received a radio alert from other staffers that there were whales spotted in the strait. She guided us around the island were we spotted a whale spout in the distance. As we held in place, the humpback surfaced within 40 yards of the kayaks, giving us a jaw-dropping sight! That alone was worth the price of admission!
More paddling in the area yielded beautiful views, a Stellar sea lion and several Bald Eagles. Reluctantly, we returned to the mother ship but were treated to outstanding smoked salmon, cream cheese and crackers to complete a perfect day.
Mariana, owners Gillian & Greg, and all the staff at Southeast Sea Kayak could not have been nicer people. A small business with a huge heart! I would highly recommend them to anyone visiting the Ketchikan area. We'll see you on next visit, guys!

My husband and I went with Southeast Sea kayaks to Orcas Cove in June 2013. The weather was beautiful and the guides were very nice, but the trip was so boring! We saw a couple star fish, the nose of a seal in the distance, and that was it. The scenery was even blah. It was not worth the money at all!

Thank you so much for taking the time to review your tour. We are so sorry that you found the trip boring. We wish that we could have exciting wildlife encounters on every single tour but unfortunately, the wildlife does not always co-operate. Even after 15 years the scenery is still stunning to me, but it may not be for everyone. We have updated our website for 2014 with even more photos, videos and slideshows so hopefully there is enough information for people considering taking any of our tours to be able to tell if the experience will be right for them.

Wasn't sure what to expect, but based on the other reviews we decided to do the Kayak Trip to Orcas Cove with Southeast Sea Kayaks. The weather was, to say the least, not ideal! The previous couple of days all the other cruise ships bypassed Ketchikan due to high winds. Our ship, however, did go to Ketchikan and we're thrilled they did. We were met at the designated location and surprised that Gillian, one of the owners, offered to refund our prepaid tour since the weather was "fairly rough". She said they never want people to have a bad experience or feel scared in any way. However, we really wanted to do the trip. Greg, her husband, met us at their dock and shuttled us to the cove. James was our guide. In spite of the continual rain, we had a blast. They were all very professional! They lived up to every expectation and then some. Their equipment is 1st rate including the rain gear that kept us dry and warm. The sight of a humpback surfacing right in front of us, less than 100 yds away, was icing on the cake. Thanks for a great job and we're more resolved than ever to skip the cruise excursions and do our own thing. We have never regretted it.
