About the operator
- H7241JZannea00Wonderful tour! The tour was amazing and informative. Captain Mark, Guides Kristen and Kacie were in total control. They knew where to go to give us the ultimate whale watching experience, in addition to sharing their extensive education on Alaska's marine life. This tour was worth every penny, the memories and pictures we came away with are priceless!
- Grandma K00BEST whale watching in 40 years of traveling!BEST of all the Whale Watching Excursions in Juneau! We would rate them 10 stars if we could! This is our third time to whale watch with Alaska Tales! And this was the BEST yet! Taylor, Larry, and Steph were our crew, and you can tell they truly enjoy their jobs! They were fun as well as informative! This time the whales were breaching! First time for us to witness that! WOW! We met Greg Pilcher, the owner about 10 years ago when we were going from kiosk to kiosk trying to choose an excursion. We just keep coming back as the years fly by! And it is always one of the highlights of cruising into Juneau. Just look for his kiosk, Alaska Tales! Ps- it is so much better to book directly rather than through the cruise line!
- C4935KSbrandym00Saw plenty of whalesLarry Steph and Monica were wonderful! Very fun and knowledgeable and we saw plenty of whales. Even saw one breach😊
- Roadtripping-Angel00Exceptional Whale Watching ExperienceThe crew was absolutely amazing. Very knowledgeable and polite to everyone. Answering all questions and even recording some of the whale sightings to airdrop to everyone. We got to see a whole lot of whales!
- Passenger4253846394800Awesome experience!! Must go again!Wonderful experience. Boats are modern, well maintained, and fun to be on. The guides and company are top notch. Everything ran on time, the whales were out and about, and all in all we had a great time. When picking a whale watching in Juneau, there are lots of options - but this is by far the best one.
- 417ameeg00Fantastic tourBucket list excursion! I’ve always anted to see whales in their habitat and we saw about 6 whales! The crew was very knowledgeable and so helpful. My dad has mobility issues and he was able to navigate this tour with no issues! Bus driver was great too!
- Rick O00Great Trip! The crew was great including the bus driver on the way to the boat. Saw many whales and eagles. I would book with them again.
- solixtrewq00Humpback Whales! We were able to see plenty of whales & the tour guides (Larry, Greg, and Monica) gave us lots of context, lots of time and lots of great answers. :)
- Arthur B00Great experience whale watching. We were in Juneau as part of our long awaited Alaskan cruise. One of the things that had been on our bucket list was to view whales. So when we disembarked from the ship we headed for the vendors on the dock and signed up with Alaska Tails. From there, after a short wait, we boarded a bus and headed to the marina. The boat is a catamaran so is well suited to give us a smooth ride out to the bay where the whales will (hopefully) be found. The two narrow hulls cut through the waves giving us a comfortable ride even though the bay was a bit choppy. Mark is the captain. Kristen is the naturalist. And Monica is the mate. Between the three of them we are given much information about the life and habits of the whales, the communication between the other boats on the bay looking for the whales, and the limitations necessarily imposed to reduce the disturbance of the whales. The crew is enthusiastic, knowledgeable and fun. And yes, we found some whales, humpbacks. About two dozen, a rough estimate for sure. Primarily seen on the starboard side of the boat several hundred feet out. Surfacing, exhaling with high spouts of mist above their blowhole. Then down they go again. Cameras and iPhones at the ready and a chorus of “look at that”, “there, look there”, “wow”. All of this excitement. And then, on the port side of the boat we hear, so very close, the loud exhale of a whale and all attention is focused there. Not more than 50 feet from the boat two whales have surfaced and blown spray high enough to make us crane our necks. Magnificent! The run back to the dock was a bit anticlimactic but we have the pictures, the memories and our bucket list is a little shorter. If you are in Juneau and want to watch some whales the folks at Alaska Tales have our full endorsement. Enjoy.
- 520Kaymann00Fantastic staff as well multiple sitingsThe staff ensured we had fantastic views and enough time with each siting. The captain was especially courteous. The ship was clean and in excellent shape
- anniecZ6814RA00Great crew, great sights, and a great time!We had the absolute BEST time!! We saw whales multiple times and one even came semi-close to the boat! Our guides, Mark, Kristen, and Ben were very knowledgeable, friendly, and entertaining! This was a dream come true for me and I can officially scratch it off the top of my bucket list! (Even though I’ll probably come back and do it again ;) **Pro tip: Bring binoculars!!!
- calvint99300Lots of whalesOur crew out of Juneau was Larry, Greg and Ben. Excellent hosts. They knew exactly where we needed to go and were very informed about whales and their activities in the area. The weather was gorgeous and the scenery enroute was spectacular. If only they could teach the humpbacks to breach on command and swim right up to our boat. :<)
- GayleenR300AMAZING!Unbelievable experience! James Steph and Monica were an incredible crew. Captain James was able to find us not one but two pods of Orcas! A transient and a resident pod in the same area. The experience was unforgettable. I would highly recommend this amazing company.
- johnrJ8849MD00Whale of a taleThe captain and crew were awesome…unbelievably experience…Had a young calf surface right up to boat…highly recommended this charter 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
- sarahjB239OV00ethical tour operatorWonderful trip! The bus driver told good stories on the ride out, and the boat crew was funny and helpful. We saw multiple whales, multiple times, even one that was feeding so we could get photos of it with its mouth open. We also saw Mendenhall Glacier while cruising from one whale sighting location to another. I had originally booked the whale watching + glacier tour. About a month before my trip, the tour office called and told me they didn't think they could actually take my money for that in good conscience because, in October, it would be dark by the time we finished whale watching and wouldn't really be able to see the glacier. I know other people on our cruise were taken to do both, and I can only imagine their disappointment. But not with Alaska Tales. They are nice *and* ethical. I truly appreciated their honesty in what we could and could not do in a short visit in the later afternoon in October (cruise docked at 2:30 pm).

Great excursion, booked off web, was less expensive than the ones offered on the cruise ship. Captain and Naturalist were excellent, moved boat as close as possible, while full descriptions and information from Naturalist were helpful and interesting. Boat was clean, roomy, and fast to whale spotting sites.

Mendenhall Glacier was beautiful, HEAVILY recommend nugget falls trail as it leads to a beautiful waterfall. The glacier can be hard to see if it's a foggy day so try to go when it's clear (which isn't too often in Juneau). There is a fee of $5 for certain areas but nugget falls trail is free and the fee is only really worth for the bear trail. Glacier is completely visable from free areas and the pass is cheap, but very much not needed.
Whale watching was very fun, snacks provided (water bottles, motts fruit gummies and granola bars) and staff are generous (can ask for seconds if you want to!). Greg was great to listen to and very informative about the whales and Maryna (Pronounced Ma-ree-nah) was great as our captain. Saw my first whale and also a massive herd of sea-lions on a small island. There is a whale sighting garentee but even just the amazing scenery was enough to amaze me and well worth the trip. Tipping is suggested at the end but you don't have to, the staff are very nice and understanding.

An absolutely amazing time and Alaskan experience. We started at the Mt. Robert’s Tramway which was easy to find and the guide tools is to Mendenhall Glacier which we had an hour to explore. My sister and I took the 2 mile round trip to Nugget Falls and it was so beautiful! The trail was nicely paved and the forest was gorgeous. There were lots of people but the falls were still awe-inspiring right next to the massive glacier. The entire park is easily explored for a couple hours. Awesome!
From there was the highlight of our trip, the whale watching. The tour bus picked us up and dropped us off at the Ramsey. The guides and captain- James, Greg, and Monica took us out to a known feeding area. We saw a bunch of whales including the biggest female - Mooncheese, Tucker who did a bunch of tail flaps and even breached, and the mother and calf pair Flame and Cinder. Our guide told us breaching for a whale is like running a marathon and we got to see it twice! That was definitely the highlight of the tour.
Greg was hilarious and so informative from telling us the routes the whales take to their gestational period to what they feed on and other antics about the whales. He was really funny and interacted with the group at a fantastic level! He made the trip super memorable.
10/10 recommend this tour as it really allowed my group to feel like we had the true Alaskan experience!

The crew (Capt. James, and crew Olive and Will) brought us close to sea lions, whales, and rare orcas. This was an unforgettable & priceless experience to be up that close and late into the season to see these majestic marine animals. Highly recommend Alaska Tales and their catamaran vessel is smooth and holds a smaller group and still have plenty of room inside and on the outside deck and upper deck.

Went on this as an excursion from. Disney Cruise and it was fantastic. Smaller group made the whale watching much more enjoyable as we didn’t have to fight for space along a crowded railing. Loved the additional wildlife viewing that came from checking the sea floor traps. My daughter (4years old) really enjoyed looking at the starfish that we had in the trap.
Kieth was a fantastic guide as he showed us all the ways to see where the whale was about to pop out of the water so our cameras were ready. He also displayed excellent knowledge and a love of entertaining stories during the nature walk portion of the tour.
This tour is very kid friendly. June, in particular, was great with my daughter who needed a lot of attention to keep moving along with the group. It was fantastic the way that June kept her entertained and gave her the kid’s version of the different nature & wildlife we were viewing on the tour.
10/10, would recommend this tour to anyone passing through the area.

This combination trip gives you a taste of Alaska. The glacier stop gives you the chance to see it from a distance but unless you area runner there isnt enought time to walk to the end of the trail and back before the bus leaves. It was chilly rainy day when we set out and the weather didn't improve but a full boat wnet out of find whales. The team of Ben, Monica and Bri were highly experienced and knew where to find the whales and easily pointed where to look. After learniing what to look fo many of the passengers were able to spot whales on our own. I was quite excited when I was the frist one to spot a whale spouting. A fun trip no matter the rain. No one was sea sick on our trip despite the weather.

Mendenhall Glacier and whale watching does it get any better and from a world class team of experts!

Our seaplane tour got cancelled due to the constant rain in Juneau. We got off our cruise ship at Dustin instantly made my day saying he had excursions available and worked a deal for my family. I went from pure disappointment for my entire day being cancelled to pure excitement joy and happiness after going to Mendenhall Glacier and whale watching. Ben was our driver and not only did he get us there safely was a wealth of knowledge and gave us all kinds of pointers and facts about the area. We explored mendenhall and wow was it breathtaking. I do wish we had 2 hours to explore to hike back to Nugget Falls but due to our timeline we only had 1 hour available. We boarded the boat for whale watching and Kyle Greg and Will did an amazing job. We saw 4 whales and got some great pictures. Seen bald eagles, sea lions and all the beautiful sights. It was wonderful and the boat was enclosed to sit in which was great due to the rain. We went on the deck to see the whales. Very accommodating for children too. They turned my disappointed day into an amazing day with lots of smiles and memories to last a lifetime. I have also shared your company with over 20 different groups traveling because your price point and what you provide is amazing in comparison to what the cruise ships offer. Hands down was my favorite excursion and my husbands of our whole cruise.

Guaranteed whale sightings or your money back. We saw at least 4-5 separate humpback whales including a first year with it's mother that independently came up within 100 ft to our stopped boat. Brianna was very knowledge and answered every question as well as provided other knowledge about the whales and area. I was very happy to see that not only were covid guidelines met, but also safe boating around the whales and respecting the 100 yd approach distance as to not disturb the whales. We even mentioned how we wish we had more time to eat between the mendenhall glacier to whale watching and one of the crew went and grabbed protein bars from the cabin for us. Can not recommend enough. Also, if coming from a cruise ship, this booking is less expensive than excursions and is one of the few boats that runs independent without cruise line contracts, so supporting them with your service really helps

Never seen a whale in my life before but this was quite a show. Our ship was in the middle of major whale activity! The crew, Brandon, breckon and monica were really great at educating us about whales and taking us in the middle of the action. If you've never seen a humpback whale or orcas before, i highly recommend this tour!

When we got pg or NCL cruiseship we meet Nick and he sold us a great package to Mendenhall Glacier and threw in Whale watching for FREE. So we went with the Alaska Tail Whale Watching tour.
We boarded the Ramsey boat to see the whales and Captain James was the best and knew exactly where to take us to see many humpback whales and sea lions. We saw many whales as they breeched the surface. Captain James even took us to see Herbert Glacier on our way out. Greg and Monica were a huge asset to the trip as they were full of fun facts and so knowledgeable on the wildlife. Ramsey ship was the best excursion. We highly recommend them.

I think it all depends on the whale. I travel the same time Juneau and Icy Strait Point. The one in Icy Strait Point are very active and you can see them eating, but the one in Juneau was completely dead like they just woke up and they don’t even get close to the boat

When we went, there were multiple operators on the boardwalk offering the same excursions. They always want to fill their bookings, so we went there early the same day of our cruise and simply negotiated a rate. It helps if you have multiple people, and if you are ready when they need to fill a bus.

We were in a fairly protected bay. Diff experience than WW of CC in open ocean. Of course everyone has diff sensitivity to sea sickness… Hope this helps. Amazing trip!
Due to flight cancelations and the re active COVID, we need to cancel our reservation. We hope to reschedule at another time in the future
My question is how do I cancel and get my refund. Everything is paid for?

You would need to call them. If you booked on Trip Advisor, you should be able to cancel the tour after you log into Trip Advisor. I had written down one phone number and it was 907-419-3098. We went on the tour as a family and do not work for them.
Is this trip handicap accessible? Have a person with a small wheelchair

They probably can make it accessible but it will be tricky. There are stairs to get into the boat and the viewing areas aren’t necessarily wide, but they are very helpful and might be willing to accommodate.

Hi,
Our cruise docks at 1:30pm, the 2:30pm time slot for this tour is already full. Would we be able to make a 2pm tour? How long does it typically take to get off the ship and into the Juneau port?
Thanks!

If the excursion is offered by your cruiseline, then there will be others going at 2pm as well. So you're good. Have a great time!!
If it's an independent excursion, then you're cutting it tight, but it's possible. Just be standing at the door when it opens for debarkation.
