Life time experience of whale watching
My daughter booked this whale watching trip directly through Alaska tales in Juneau during our Norwegian encore cruise to Alaska. They picked us from Juneau cruise docking area. Our crew for this trip were Larry, Steph, Ber. They were knowledgeable regarding whales. Boat was modern. Due to there experience we saw many whales. Best company for this activity. Booking directly is cheaper than through cruise people.

Fantastic Experience. First time to Alaska.
It was a cloudy, rainy day, but that didn't put a damper on our day. Our Tour was fabulous. Captain Mike is very knowledgeable as to where to go to be sure to see Whale's. The crew, Rayne and Olive were very friendly and knowledgeable out the whales, their habitat and were great all around. I would totally recommend this tour to future travelers.

BEST whale watching in 40 years of traveling!
BEST of all the Whale Watching Excursions in Juneau! We would rate them 10 stars if we could! This is our third time to whale watch with Alaska Tales! And this was the BEST yet! Taylor, Larry, and Steph were our crew, and you can tell they truly enjoy their jobs! They were fun as well as informative! This time the whales were breaching! First time for us to witness that! WOW! We met Greg Pilcher, the owner about 10 years ago when we were going from kiosk to kiosk trying to choose an excursion. We just keep coming back as the years fly by! And it is always one of the highlights of cruising into Juneau. Just look for his kiosk, Alaska Tales! Ps- it is so much better to book directly rather than through the cruise line!

    Fantastic tour
Bucket list excursion! I’ve always anted to see whales in their habitat and we saw about 6 whales! The crew was very knowledgeable and so helpful. My dad has mobility issues and he was able to navigate this tour with no issues! Bus driver was great too!

    Wonderful Views, Enthusiastic Staff
Wonderful experience. We saw more whales than we could keep up with. The boat had an unusual design so the people inside could have an unobstructed view, even if other people were outside. Some people took pictures they were helped to match with a book of pictures that identified individual whales. Very dedicated staff. It was dark and raining when we returned and instead of dropping us at a central location, our bus driver took us each to our ship's gangways.

The crew was great including the bus driver on the way to the boat. Saw many whales and eagles. I would book with them again.

    Great experience whale watching.
We were in Juneau as part of our long awaited Alaskan cruise. One of the things that had been on our bucket list was to view whales. So when we disembarked from the ship we headed for the vendors on the dock and signed up with Alaska Tails. From there, after a short wait, we boarded a bus and headed to the marina. The boat is a catamaran so is well suited to give us a smooth ride out to the bay where the whales will (hopefully) be found. The two narrow hulls cut through the waves giving us a comfortable ride even though the bay was a bit choppy. Mark is the captain. Kristen is the naturalist. And Monica is the mate. Between the three of them we are given much information about the life and habits of the whales, the communication between the other boats on the bay looking for the whales, and the limitations necessarily imposed to reduce the disturbance of the whales. The crew is enthusiastic, knowledgeable and fun. And yes, we found some whales, humpbacks. About two dozen, a rough estimate for sure. Primarily seen on the starboard side of the boat several hundred feet out. Surfacing, exhaling with high spouts of mist above their blowhole. Then down they go again. Cameras and iPhones at the ready and a chorus of “look at that”, “there, look there”, “wow”. All of this excitement. And then, on the port side of the boat we hear, so very close, the loud exhale of a whale and all attention is focused there. Not more than 50 feet from the boat two whales have surfaced and blown spray high enough to make us crane our necks. Magnificent! The run back to the dock was a bit anticlimactic but we have the pictures, the memories and our bucket list is a little shorter. If you are in Juneau and want to watch some whales the folks at Alaska Tales have our full endorsement. Enjoy.

    Lots of whales
Our crew out of Juneau was Larry, Greg and Ben. Excellent hosts. They knew exactly where we needed to go and were very informed about whales and their activities in the area. The weather was gorgeous and the scenery enroute was spectacular. If only they could teach the humpbacks to breach on command and swim right up to our boat. :<)

    Relaxing whale watching
We saw so much whale activity, seals and bald eagles. Terrific tour totally worth your time. This time of year typically doesn’t have this much activity but we lucked out with some active wildlife and a great tour guide.

    A perfect day in Juneau
What a beautiful day, we couldn't have asked for anything more ! We very much enjoyed our time at Mendenhall Glacier, then a spectacular time on the water with Captain Mark , Steph and Kacie. The ship was super comfortable with staduim seating and the crew was so knowledgeable and kind with their time and information. We learned so much and saw several whales breaching. The ride was very comfrtable and we would 100 percent do it again with this great crew !

    A Tale of Whale watchers
We took this trip as an excursion from a cruise. It was the best decision! We hopped on the green bus in Juneau and had an enjoyable ride to the glacier, the driver was very engaged with the riders. We saw the Mendenhall Glacier and had time to walk around the area without rushing, we grabbed a lot of photos and were able to see some Salmon in the stream nearby. We got back on the bus and got a ride to the dock to jump on the boat. The crew, James, Steph and Will, were welcoming and really made us feel good about what we were embarking on. We ventured out and it wasn't long before the boat slowed and we got the first glimpse of a humpback going for a dive. Moving around a bit we were able (well, it was all the crew) to find a hotspot with quite a few whales feeding in the area. The activity was awesome and we watched a mother and calf just playing, fin slapping and swimming around. There were a couple times we saw the whole whale, breaching and letting us see just how big they are. The entire time we were watching, the crew kept us updated on what we were seeing in the water as well as some of the land around where we were. Just beautiful scenery! There were a couple Orcas that we saw on the way back to the dock that were swimming by. The crew was awesome, (we had also went whale watching in New England) these folks were on their game, ensuring everyone was having a good time. They even shared the pictures they had taken during the trip. This was truly a trip we'll remember.

    The good and the bad
The Pros: we did see a whale! and they made every effort to find more animals, however it was off season. The cons: They packed 4 charter buses on one boat, so it was a lot of people, sometimes hard to get a seat, or a good view. I think it would have been much better just stopping a 3 buses of people

    Whale of a trip
James, Steph and Ben were wonderful. Captain James kept us close enough we could get great views of the whales when they surfaced, only wish one of them had breached while we were out. Step and Ben were knowledgeable and entertaining. They were able to answer all of the questions those of us on the tour had.

    Great Experience
With an excellent captain and an excellent guide, you cruise out to where the whales like to play. With the engines switched off, you get to hear and see the whales in a calm and relaxed atmosphere. The second part of the tour took us to the glacier and its lake. There are several different walks with different viewing points, all with different time scales and abilities. Our driver Will was a great unofficial guide.

We booked this at the dock when our original excursion was cancelled for weather. We didn’t know what to expect but the whole trip “blew” us away!! Captain Mike knew exactly where to go. Monica spotted 3 whales right away and Olive was so knowledgeable about each whale and their personalities. The entire crew was so kind to my kids and patiently answered ALLLLL their questions.
This adventure was our favorite part of our Alaska vacation!!

Nick was our salesman and he was smart enough to convince us to go on the whale watching boat. I’m so glad he convinced us and glad that we bought directly with them instead of the cruise line. Because we went through Alaska Tales, it was less crowded, we had a more personal experience, and it was less expensive. We brought drinks and dinner on board. We saw more whales than we thought possible, we got a ton of great pictures yand videos. The crew and captain were friendly and natural conversationalists, and they enjoyed the whales as much as we did. Our first day in Alaska was great.

Wonderful trip! The bus driver told good stories on the ride out, and the boat crew was funny and helpful. We saw multiple whales, multiple times, even one that was feeding so we could get photos of it with its mouth open. We also saw Mendenhall Glacier while cruising from one whale sighting location to another. I had originally booked the whale watching + glacier tour. About a month before my trip, the tour office called and told me they didn't think they could actually take my money for that in good conscience because, in October, it would be dark by the time we finished whale watching and wouldn't really be able to see the glacier. I know other people on our cruise were taken to do both, and I can only imagine their disappointment. But not with Alaska Tales. They are nice *and* ethical. I truly appreciated their honesty in what we could and could not do in a short visit in the later afternoon in October (cruise docked at 2:30 pm).

We booked a morning tour with Alaska Whale Tales in Juneau Alaska. We were greeted and told that only 4 had booked, that normally they would not take less than 10, but made an exception for us. So we felt special from the beginning! The bus driver was very jolly and drove us out to Auke Bay where we met the crew William, Sarah and Monica. The catamaran boat normally seats about 40 , rides smooth, has outdoor decks . The crew was outstanding in their knowledge of the whales and area around us. They were just as excited as we were to be surrounded by so many whales in their “bubble feeding”, as we actually spotted 17 whales that morning!!! Never in my wildest dreams did I expect to witness such a sight and so close to the boat . To make our day even more perfect, we viewed the gorgeous Chilcoot mountains, a glacier and a rainbow as background🌈. Upon our return we felt like royalty as 38 people waited for the next tour….hee hee. We shared a morning of whale magic with an amazing crew…THANK YOU WHALE TALES

We booked the whale trip independently due to it being less expensive than the cruise ship excursion. Plus they offered a 100% refund if whales were not sighted. William, Kyle, Isabel and Kyle were great, knowledgeable and very friendly. Bus driver Brandon was great and had some funny tales as we made our trek to the dock. We saw probably six or seven sightings that spouted and surface multiple times. Even saw 2 or 3 moms with calves playing. We saw a couple of seals on a buoy and the captain stirred the boat 360 degrees around it so everyone got good views of both. Since this is the only whale trip I’ve been on, I can’t say they are better than the others but i can vouch that we got our money’s worth with a lower price and the added guarantee to see whales.

What a great tour. We booked this midday trip the same day and couldn’t have been more pleased with the boat, knowledgeable crew, price and WHALES! Higher quality and less expensive than those tour operators who contract with the cruise lines. Such a great experience, one that I will book again on our next trip. Highly recommended.

We had the most amazing experience with captain Josh and Taz! Taz shared so much passion for the whales and we loved hearing about who the whales are and how they live! They were a great team. We saw several whales and even one sleeping. Josh was great at identifying where they were and being patient as we waited for them to surface. Alaska Tales also accommodated our cruise ship’s change in itinerary and made a change in their plan for us. Would use this company again!

When I bought my ticket the guy told me to come back at 2.45pm near two white tents. He did not clearly mention where they were and it turned out that there were white tents in several places causing me to go back in the pouring rain to the sales booth and arrive late at the assembly location. I did see some whales from the boat. One got quite close and I got some good pictures including a tail but the whales disappear under the water every few seconds so you have to be looking all the time. Mark, Kristen and Taylor did a good job in the rainy weather. The boat had comfortable seats and you could walk on deck at times. The worst part of the trip for me was the bus ride which lasted about 20 minutes each way. The bus resembled an old school bus with smallish seats meant to accommodate two normal size people with short legs. However, I had to contend with a number of large size passengers, some of whom thought they should fit in the two seats by themselves. My legs were in the bus corridor as I squeezed onto the edge of a seat occupied by a large man with a large coat. There were seat belts but I did not notice any being used. For $150 plus $7.50 tax, I think Alaska Tales should provide a comfortable modern coach with legroom and the ability to buckle the seat belts. The bus rides and the vague directions for where to assemble substantially reduced my rating for this trip.

Saw a lot more whales than I expected! Olive was a great and friendly guide, and captain Mike got us close to the whales while keeping them safe. We even saw a sea lion which was a welcome surprise. Only downside was the weather, but it’s Alaska, so what else can you expect? The boat had an inside seating area with lots of windows to open and close. The bow deck area was a bit small for everyone so I recommend watching from the stern deck. Overall it was a fantastic experience!

After missing our original tour due to a late ship, Alaska Tales was nice enough to rebook us on this trip and I am so thrilled that they did! The crew was knowledgeable and very nice. They were careful to be polite to other boaters when in high traffic areas and careful not to crowd the wildlife. We encountered several whales, first a humpback with almost a full breach right in front of us and then several lifted flukes. We then went out and the crew took us to “something special,” as we passed by another large humpback with a fully lifted fluke to see it. They had found 3 orcas, a cow, calf and juvenile which put on an amazing show with multiple breaches and tail slaps. A quick trip to see the sea lions and one more lifted fluke from a humpback on the way back to the harbor. Sarah, Steph, and Kristen were wonderful and thanks to them and Alaska Tales a busted trip turned into amazing memories for my family!
