About
Experience the famous Mendenhall Glacier up close and personal during this 6 hour adventure which includes paddling and glacier exploration. Paddle up to the magnificent Mendenhall Glacier, over Mendenhall Lake, and past Nugget Falls to experience glacier exploration along the edge of the glacier. Accessing ice caves, moulins, or any other glacial feature is not guaranteed: The Mendenhall Glacier features are in constant change. Your guide will assess each available feature prior to accessing to determine if it’s safe to explore. The Mendenhall Glacier is receding on a daily basis and due to this we are seeing significant changes to the surface of the glacier. There are very limited safe areas to access and explore on the ice with crampons. Safety is our number one priority and we can not guarantee every trip will hike on the glacier. The edge of the glacier has some of the most stunning features; caves, tunnels, tubes, and crevasses which create those beautiful blue colors.

Breathtaking adventure!
Jun 2021 • Family
My teenage sons and I did the Mendenhall Glacier Canoe, Paddle, and Trek tour. Amazing experience and the guides, Jacques and Cory, were fantastic! Paddling the canoe out definitely requires some work and is not a quick trip, but it is so worth it. We were fortunate enough to be doing this tour when they were no cruise ships coming in so we didn't have to deal with cruise excursionists who weren't prepared/willing to work. Everyone on the trek was fit and up for the effort required. Even on a cold, rainy, windy day, it was a worthwhile, breathtaking adventure.

MENDENHALL LAKE PADDLE AND GLACIER TREK
Sep 2019
This was not our first choice tour however we had a great time! Tour guide was nice and pleasant - they did what they were paid to do. We enjoyed both the canoe paddle and the glacier trek. We have some nice pictures but since we have done glacier tracks before in Iceland and Greenland this one was bit disappointing....
Other people on our tour just loved it! as this was their first time glacier experience :)

Incredible Tour - Such a Unique & Fun Trip!
We had an incredible trip paddling Mendenhall Lake and trekking on Mendenhall Glacier! It was our first time setting foot on a glacier and our guides Jacob and Casey helped us through the whole thing! We will definitely be doing this tour again on future trips to Juneau!

This was by far one of the best things we did while in Alaska. Our guides were the best and very knowledgable about the glacier and surrounding area. it is a must do if you are physically capable.

Great active, educational, safe...and unique...experience
Sep 2019
Even though we were on a cruise we made our reservations directly with ABAK; it saved money and most of the others were part of the ship's excursion so pick-up and drop-off weren't a problem. ABAK was professional and organized every step of the process: answering pre-booking questions, coordinating pick-up, outfitting us, and guiding the group across the lake and on the glacier.

Melissa (Mel) and Whisper were great guides. Not only were they fun, knowledgeable, and focused on our safety, but it was evident they were passionate about what they do and respect the environment they're in.

The excursion definitely requires some physical capabilities. Everyone has to contribute to paddling the canoe across the lake for 45 minutes to an hour and then be sure-footed while walking on the glacier.

Definitely a rare experience made that much more special by ABAK and their guides.

Naomi, our guide, was incredible!
Jul 2019
I was worried to go on this excursion because I was the only one from my group. There was only one open spot left. But, it was something I always wanted to do and boy am I glad I did! The people in my group were a lot of fun. I was afraid I was going to be a lot of young folks that I would slow down, but that was not the case at all. We had all age ranges in our group and I didn't slow anyone down! Naomi, our guide, was incredible! Very patient, kind, helpful and extremely knowledgeable. We were in great hands. She had a way of inspiring you that showed she genuinely believed in you! This was by far the highlight of my Alaskan cruise! I will go back and do this again. However, next time, I'm going to book way in advance so that I can bring my husband with me. If you're on the fence...this is a MUST DO....even if you are the only one in your group that wants to do it! You won't regret it and maybe it will be the highlight of your trip too

Thank you for sharing this great experience! It is great when guests connect with the guides the way it sounds like you did with Naomi. I will definitely share this with her. We do tend to sell out in advance so definitely recommend booking in advance. We look forward to having your husband join you next time! Thank you for making us a part of your Alaskan vacation.

Definitely the highlight of our Alaska vacation
Jun 2019
The paddle and trek excursion to the Mendenhall Glacier is an adventure I will never forget. Our guide Jacques was funny, smart, trustworthy and informative. Trustworthy was probably the most important, as safety was his top priority. There was never a moment that I didn't feel safe. The equipment we used was fitted properly and checked twice. The canoe ride was tough, but fun. The weather was perfect, of course, cold, but we were given appropriate wear (boots, jackets, helmets, etc) to keep us warm. Bring your own gloves, and an extra pair even, as they get wet on the canoe, but you need dry ones on the glacier. We took some of our own snacks and lunch, but their snacks were plentiful, and healthy. But the best part was hiking on the glacier. A little bit of careful stepping and balancing, but Jacques was always there with a hand if needed. Besides that, not too strenuous of a hike. Just incredibly beautiful.

Thank you Elizabeth for sharing about your adventure and letting us be a part of your Alaskan vacation! I will pass this along to Jacques. Safety is definitely a top priority and all our guides take it very seriously while providing a fun, interactive tour. As we move towards the end of September it is definitely a great idea to start to pack more layers such as additional gloves. Thanks again and come back anytime!

Juneau Shore Excursion: Mendenhall Glacier Canoe, Paddle, and Trek
Jul 2019
This was a nice excursion in Juneau. We had great guides who made sure we were on time and ensured our safety. We were able to see ice caves and beautiful views. Trekking was not too strenuous, canoe paddling can be arduous after some time.

Thank you for sharing!! So glad to hear you had a great day out on the ice and yes the canoeing can often be the most difficult portion for people. It different muscles than most people use daily. Have a great vacation!!

An epic adventure for our family of 4
Aug 2019
We have nothing but great things to say about this excursion except that we didn't want to leave the glacier. Justin and Mel were are paddling experts guiding us over to the glacier. We felt very safe and informed from their detailed instructions. The gear to wear helped keep us Floridians nice and warm during the paddle and on the glacier.
We met up with (Lieutenant) Dan once on the glacier and he and Justin guided us expertly around the glacier with lots of information, laughs, and photo opportunities. The snacks were quite tasty too!! If you're looking for an adventure with a great group of people choose this group to safely get you to the glacier!
