        A dream come true!!!
From beginning to end, the trip was top notch! The float plane was great, couldn’t wait to experience it! Seeing the bears up close was a dream come true and the best birthday present a girl could wish for! My guide, Miles, was the best ever! I highly recommend this wonderful company, every contact I had with ABAK was friendly and professional! Hope to return for whale watching some day!

July 2023- Kayaking with Whales (with 2 teenage boys)
Chris & Matt were wonderful! We did the whale watching/kayaking combo which was perfect for our teenage boys because it was more adventurous than just whale watching. They provided all the gear we needed and a wonderful snack! Highly recommend.

        Great private hike with family
We had a fabulous day hiking in the rain with Ben. I wasn't sure how the day was going to go since it was raining, but that didn't stop us! We hiked over gorgeous terrain and Ben was patient and fun with our 2 kids. The sky ended up clearing right when we arrived at the glacier so we got beautiful views both foggy and and sunny. As it states, you can't actually touch the glacier, its now separated by a small lake from the land.. so dont expect to touch or get on it in any way. I knew that, but I did not understand that there is actually no access to the glacier at all. The pictures of all that blue glacier are from previous years. That being said, it was an awesome day and one we will not soon forget! Highly rec doing the private group tour! It was awesome for our family!

        Amazing time
Julia was so kind and positive, she made the experience so memorable. The little lunch provided was also just the right amount. Overall we would definitely go back and we saw the rare sight of two humpback whales jumping synchronously too!

My Favorite Juneau Excursion So Far
During my weeklong vacation in Juneau, I booked a total of 8 excursions. There was certainly some tough competition, but I think this was likely my favorite for the following reasons: - Ideal group size - with a limit of 6 travelers, this trip is a great way to get away from the crowds. For the record, there were a total of 3 travelers on my outing, which meant a good amount of personalized interaction and one-on-one face time with the guides and staff, as opposed to a more typical tour where you need to compete for attention and are treated more as an interchangeable tourist. - Degree of physical exertion - most tours require very little physical exertion, which sort of dilutes the 'sense of accomplishment' factor. My favorite part of the tour was the packrafting portion - it felt great to know that I had to put in some minimal amount of effort to get to the destination as opposed to being shuttled there without having to lift a hand. - Novelty factor - I had never used crampons or a packraft before (though I have kayaked previously), so it was great to experience these for the first time. - Walking on top of a glacier - always a magical experience. Finally, I wanted to add a few shout outs for whoever at Above and Beyond Alaska ends up reading this: Dan, the guide who took us out on packrafting and the glacier walk, was amazing and great to interact with. I was really impressed to learn about all of the prep work that he does to get everything set up for the tours, with one example being clearing off and marking the path we walked on to get to the packrafts, and I'm sure this applies to the other guides who do this tour as well. He also came across as a very experienced and knowledgeable guide who really knows his stuff. I interacted with Claire from the office several times that day. Through all these interactions, she was really personable, friendly, open and a joy to converse with. I felt really welcome at the ABAK office relative to other tour company offices that I've visited pre- and post-excursion. I feel bad about not remembering the name of the woman who picked us up and did the drop off (I did remember that she was from Minneapolis), but she was really friendly, sociable, and great to chat with as well. If I find myself in Juneau again in the near future, I'd definitely look into doing another tour with ABAK.

A view not to be missed
This was a great hike led by our guide Jeffrey. Jeff was very friendly and informative. The walk is quite strenuous, but Jeff made sure everyone was capable and wearing the right clothing. A waterproof and decent walking shoes/boots are a must.

        Interesting, Fun and Exciting
I am so impressed by this tour company. Matt, our captain, was friendly and expertly put us in position to get the best views of the whales. I also felt safe and well cared for by both Matt and Julia. Julia was knowledgeable and fun. We saw lots of whales and learned about bubble net feeding which we witnessed. The following day we learned about bears from Mateus. The weather canceled our excursion but Mateus made the time we waited to see if the cloud cover dissipated was well spent. I can’t wait to come back and do more adventures with this company

        Mind-blowing experience
This was an excellent experience with a fantastic crew! Guides were super knowledgeable (and funny to boot). Ben and Chris made everyone feel comfortable in the canoe and just had so much knowledge of the glacier. We were really lucky in that we also saw a couple of bald eagles along the way. It's a little sad to see how much the glacier has receded over time but it is still well worth going there and having your mind blown by how much ice there really is. Do the paddling tour -- it's taxing on the arms but the views and how close up you get to the glacier itself is so worth it! Thanks for a fantastic experience!

        Must do in Juneau!
We did the Fly-In Norris Glacier Hike & Packraft on June 30 - incredible 5 star experience!! We're locals and would absolutely recommend this tour to locals and vistors alike, it's a truly unique adventure. Abby, Cory, and the rest of the crew were so passionate and knowledgeable about the glaciers/landscape. The seaplane ride was about 25 minutes both ways. We landed on Norris lake and then had a 10 minute walk to where you get in the packrafts. The packraft paddle is about 15 minutes and you get out directly onto the glacier to hike around! You can tell that safety is the priority in every portion of the tour. A must do in Juneau!

Best day of the Alaska cruise!
This is why I came to Alaska! I would add more stars if I could. Best day of the whole cruise! Leeann and Kiana were our guides and were terrific young ladies with hiking experience and knowledge of the local flora to share. 7 wonderful hours out in stunning nature. I would comment that if you are not physically fit, and ALSO have good balance and climbing ability- DO NOT BOOK this! It was a 968 ft elevation gain hike. Read the information on their website and do not blindly book this on trip advisor. You will climb up and down large rocks, walk thru streams or water and mud, scramble up some short rock faces with your hands and slide down on your bum. This impacts the whole group of up to 12 hikers (max tour size) as one guide has to always remain with the hikers regardless if they are capable of continuing. This is not a flat walk in the woods for someone just pulling new hiking boots out of the box that morning. That said, the other thing to note is that the glacier is receding and no two trips will be the same. You aren't walking on the glacier and the ice caves of 2022 and before are now gone. It was fascinating to see the changes made over time by the glacier. I would totally do this trip again given the chance.

        Awesome day in Juneau
A great way to spend a day in Juneau. Noah and Keanu (spelling - sorry!) were fantastic guides. They are very knowledgeable about the history of the area, the geology and fauna and kept us all paddling along. You will need to paddle! Not kidding. It’s about an hour each way. So worth it though as the glacier is beautiful and the lake is peaceful. Not really a hike- we walked a bit to get closer to the glacier, but it’s really about the canoeing. The trip is very well organized. It was a bit chilly and there was rain on and off, so layer accordingly.

        Epic family hike day!
Not sure there are enough words to adequately capture what a spectacular day my family just had on this trek! We had THE most amazing day with our tour guide Hailey who expertly and enthusiastically led us on a day long hike to the glacier and back. Our kids ages 19, 17 and 13 all LOVED the trip too. We are active travelers and regularly hike. This hike is definitely not an easy one but ABAK makes it manageable with the right gear and the BEST snack pack that more than fuels you for the day. We are SO glad we did this hike while in Juneau!

This was not our first choice tour however we had a great time! Tour guide was nice and pleasant - they did what they were paid to do. We enjoyed both the canoe paddle and the glacier trek. We have some nice pictures but since we have done glacier tracks before in Iceland and Greenland this one was bit disappointing....
Other people on our tour just loved it! as this was their first time glacier experience :)

I was worried to go on this excursion because I was the only one from my group. There was only one open spot left. But, it was something I always wanted to do and boy am I glad I did! The people in my group were a lot of fun. I was afraid I was going to be a lot of young folks that I would slow down, but that was not the case at all. We had all age ranges in our group and I didn't slow anyone down! Naomi, our guide, was incredible! Very patient, kind, helpful and extremely knowledgeable. We were in great hands. She had a way of inspiring you that showed she genuinely believed in you! This was by far the highlight of my Alaskan cruise! I will go back and do this again. However, next time, I'm going to book way in advance so that I can bring my husband with me. If you're on the fence...this is a MUST DO....even if you are the only one in your group that wants to do it! You won't regret it and maybe it will be the highlight of your trip too

Thank you for sharing this great experience! It is great when guests connect with the guides the way it sounds like you did with Naomi. I will definitely share this with her. We do tend to sell out in advance so definitely recommend booking in advance. We look forward to having your husband join you next time! Thank you for making us a part of your Alaskan vacation.

Our group of 3 had an amazing canoe experience and the glacier trek was unlike anything we had ever experienced! Not to mention the great, friendly and knowledgeable guides. We also enjoyed the array of good snacks, which were nice after the exertion of the canoe paddling! BTW the paddling is no joke, so it was helpful that MOST of in the canoe pulled our own weight, but you are at the mercy of the other guests and how much or how little they want to paddle. The 2 guides made up for the slackers-so just try not to be "those people..."

Thank you Peggy! This is awesome to hear!! You are right - the whole tour is an active adventure but the canoe paddling uses different muscle groups than most people use their regular day, so you can feel the burn a bit but is absolutely doable for anyone who is active and have full mobility. We appreciate you joining us for this multi-sport adventure!

If you had a day to enjoy an excursion in Juneau, consider the Glacier Canoe Paddle and Trek with ABAK! Whisper and Jacob were our guides for the day, they were professional, so incredibly funny, and had so much knowledge of Mendenhall and above all they had such passion for the environment too. They were great at having everyone feel included even for the solo travellers. Above all that, I was surprised by the amount and quality of the snacks they provided, Really awesome tour, I won't hesitate to recommend!

We had a great day. Our guide, Elle, was wonderful. We appreciated her enthusiasm and her knowledge. We would like to have had more time actually on the glacier but that was as much about the pace of some of our members, as it was about Elle. The gear provided was great and the trip was well organized. Highly recommend this trip for those interested in being outside and experiencing the glacier firsthand.

So glad you connected with the amazing Elise. Her energy and light is an absolute blessing to the team. In a perfect world, we would hang out on the glacier as long as clients wanted everyday, but alas schedules just simply can't allow it. With the hiking tour, the pace of the hike can vary and that affects time up on the ice. If you think you are going to go faster or slower than the pace of 30 minutes per mile - please consider our Private Glacier Trek hiking tour. This will allow you to hike at whatever pace is best for you and your group. Then you have more time and flexibility up on the ice. Thank you for joining us and have a fantastic vacation!

Lemme tell you, this was one of the highlights of our Alaskan vacay with our crazy group of friends. Yes! We paddled. Yes! We hiked! And YES! It was a blast. Besides the obvious Wows of hiking a glacier and enjoying the outdoors in Alaska, the thing that made the trip so fun and extremely informative were our fantastic guides Matt and Daniel aka DAN!! DAN!! DAN!! Our affectionate chant to keep our canoe from looking like a drunken caterpillar.
Above and beyond really does just that. Goes above and beyond to guide you through an amazing day while keeping you safe and laughing all the way!
Thanks so much you guys. Love ya! The Memphis Crew

This was an experience of a lifetime. First, our guide Elise picked us up from the dock our cruise ship was at. Then, we were promptly driven to their clean warehouse where we borrowed top of the line rain and hiking gear to use for the trek. We enjoyed hours of canoeing and glacier trekking that was unlike anything we'd previously experienced. Our guide, however, made this experience special. Elise was fantastic. She was knowledgable, friendly, and she made me feel very safe. I was extremely impressed with not only the information she was able to share about that specific area, but glaciers in general.Thank you for a once in a lifetime experience, Elise!

My sister and I went on this excursion during our cruise stop in Juneau. From the beginning, all of the staff were extremely nice and helpful in getting us to the location and suited up for the paddling in waterproof gear. Our guide for the day was Matt, and he was extremely knowledgeable, kind, and hilarious. After a productive paddle across the lake in front of the Mendenhall glacier, we hiked a short distance over to the glacier and geared up to explore it. Matt made sure everyone knew the correct way to walk on the glacier and that everyone was safe at all times. The glacier was incredible!! I can tell you about the ice caves, deep crevasses, and smooth ice that we saw, but really you need to experience this in person! This tour is 100% worth any price tag!!

WOW! Thank you for your kind words! That means the world to us to hear you had such a great experience! I will make sure to let Matt know feedback as well. And you are absolutely right - the glacier is something you just have to see for yourself to truly appreciate. It's a whole other world up there and well worth the effort! Hope you have a fantastic rest of your vacation and please come visit us again soon!

What can I say, the best tour my wife and I have ever taken. When you think of Alaska, this is the tour you must take. It is not for everyone. You paddle 2.5 miles to get to the Glacier and then you get to hike on the Glacier. When I say hike, it is not just standing on it, but hiking up and down on it. Then, you must paddle another 2.5 miles back to the Van. Everyone must paddle so be prepared to be tired after the tour. Saying that, please do not miss this tour. I want to thank our guides, Ben and Matt for all of there help and keeping everyone safe and having fun. You are very safe with them and I would ask for them in the future when I go back.

Thank you Bill and Connie!! You were absolutely wonderful people to work with and the exact clients we love to take out for an adventure. It is an all day active adventure, so you are right, it can be tiring for people at the end of the day but perfect for people who want to have a big, safe, and memorable adventure tour on their vacation. Thank you for joining us and please come visit again soon!

Kimball was the greatest guide, our kids now want to raft in California. Dave is a horrible guide, scared the children and threw rocks at a bald Eagle, just appalling.

Thank you Michael for your review. We do not have guides named Kimball nor Dave. We also don't provide rafting tours. This makes me think you may have been referring to a different company. We hope you enjoyed your time in Juneau!
