      Whale watching!
Captain Jackie and Megan were fantastic. We saw so many whales including one that breached 3 times, sea lions, and a rare sea otter sighting. They were very knowledgeable in their facts and did a great job seeking out wildlife. We would highly recommend!

      Be ready to row
Beautiful views of a glacier and waterfall. There is a small beach where you can disembark and get a bit closer to the gorgeous waterfall. Try drinking the water! It was fresh, cold, and tasted so much better than anything you can get in the lower 48 states. Our van driver was David and he really made the trip to and from the lake a lot of fun. He was knowledgeable and funny. We learned a lot about the local history, and his presentation was lively. Our canoe guide was Joel. He was also very knowledgeable and kept the canoe ride interesting. He gave us plenty of time to take photos! We learned a lot about the lake, glacier, and surrounding nature from him. You could tell both of these young men enjoy their job. Please be sure you are able to row a canoe and get in and out of it with little or no help.

      Amazing jeep & canoe safari
This was by far the best trip that we have done. Keegan was our guide & he was absolutely fantastic! This was my first time driving a left hand side vehicle so Keegan put our jeep behind his, very reassuring. You got to spend loads of time driving the Jeep & there were plenty of opportunities to change driver. The views & scenery were amazing, we did have extremely good weather. Keegan gave us loads of stops to take pictures. We then went & got onto the canoe. The lake was absolutely stunning, so beautiful & peaceful. Rowed across the lake where we were greeted with salmon pate, bread, crackers, hot chocolate & the most delicious clam chowder. We then took a short stroll through the forest. Rowed back to where we started & got on the coach back to the cruise ship. Excellent trip & well worth the money.

      Wonderful adventure
This was my favorite excursion. Our tour guide Keegan was AMAZING. He had many insights into the culture and nature facts. The landing was awesome. They fed us some salmon dip and chowder. Went on a little nature walk. Everything was wonderful and Keegan just made it so much better.

Whale watching was awesome thanks to Hanna and Captain Jackie.
The naturalist Hanna and Captain Jackie were the best guides for us to see many whales and sea lions. Did not disappoint.

      Worth Every Moment
I went solo on this trip and was accompanied by a really chill guide (Taylor Russell 🤙). Nothing beat the sunny day, the kayaking and the remarkable views from the Mendahal lake.

Bravo Captain Lee, Savannah, and Melanie
In town on a short visit to AK I read the reviews and chose this option for a treasured whale watch experience. I arrived by city bus 4 from Valley Transit as my hotel was near the airport and I was not a cruise ship passenger. Greeted by a really friendly, enthusiastic group I learned this trip was pretty much the first of the season. Captain Lee a lovely genuine fellow who chatted all things travel with me before departure, Savannah our very knowledgeable naturalist shared her joy and passion of Whales. We headed out and quickly sped to join the flotilla of craft patiently waiting for Humpbacks to appear which they did often, we moved around to different locations and watched for the signs of whales in adjacent waters. A really great experience under the crews care and we definitely saw the trademark breaching and tale appearing rolling over many times. My only slight negative perhaps the layout of these particular boats did not allow easy repeated access to the open deck at the back for photographs. Safety of course is a concern when moving around but other craft around appeared to have easier higher access. Nevertheless the crew were marvellous and the attention to detail great. Helped my beer at the nearby Forbidden Peak brewery go down a treat. 5 stars for a great team who shared this amazing experience

Amazing views with a fun crew
Amazing excursion!!! We booked from Norwegian Cruise which offered an easy and fun way to travel. The trip started with an amazing and funny bus driver Trenton who drove us to the site. Then we met a awesome crew with the two leading guys -Trent and Samuel. They gave us facts of the lake and answered all of our questions. Then we canoed to the glacier and saw a waterfall. We were able to walk towards the waterfall. They gave us snacks of salmon dip, chips, cheese, carrots and celery. Then we canoed back where they collected the boots, plastic overalls and life jacket. Afterwards, you had the option to stop by the shopping center or head back to the boat.

      Enjoyable experience
We had a great time. Good food and very entertaining. A bit on the hokey side but that was OK. We enjoyed it. It made for a fun afternoon. Nice, slow pace so we could enjoy the day.

We traveled on the Whale Watching Adventure & Gold Creek Salmon Bake excursion from our Celebrity Cruise. I'm going to review this in two portions as they have drastically different ratings:

    Whale Watching - 2 Stars
This one is truly hard to rate. The guide and captain we had were FANTASTIC. Very knowledgeable and personable and made the trip much better; however, the boat itself was not optimal. They said it was purpose built for whale watching, although why it would be built WITHOUT a wrap around or front viewing deck is beyond me. The only area outside to view was a small viewing platform at the rear of the boat where maybe 5-6 people in a line could stand against the railing. That meant that every time we were allowed outside, because you had to keep coming inside to sit back down when the boat was in motion (which was also a negative), everyone would rush out and only a handful of people could actually see. Every other whale watching tour I have done in Juneau and in other Alaskan cities have walkaround outside decks so everyone can see. For this reason alone, the main reason of the trip, I cannot recommend taking a tour with Alaska Travel Adventures. Our tour was packed with about 46 people, many of whom could not see and were complaining, which is understandable. You pay $200+ for the tour and then just see other peoples heads. The captain also said he would rotate the vessel so everyone on both sides could see, but he never did that even once on our tour. Thankfully we were able to see some awesome whales up close and get some good shots, but we only did this by standing at the back of the boat the entire ride to ensure we were the first out; which (A) takes away the fun of the tour and comfort and (B) truly isn't fair to everyone who doesn't get to see everything.

Gold Creek Salmon Bake: 5 Stars
The Salmon Bake was perfection! It was delicious, fresh, and had great atmosphere! The food was truly delicious and it was nice that you had no time limit. Because they have busses running back to town or back to the ship you could take your time and enjoy the area or you could eat and head back as soon as you wanted. We really enjoyed the bonfires they had going and the marshmallow options available as well. The creek and waterfall were also a nice touch and would be amazing to see the salmon in! HIGHLY recommend visiting here!

All in all, we were able to enjoy the tour, but I would not do it again and would not recommend this boat at all for anyone whale watching in Juneau. If there were 25 people, it would have been OK, but with 46 it was too crowded and not enjoyable for most people.

I'm sorry to say this excursion was really disappointing. The ride to the dock was good and the driver was fun but as soon as I saw which boat we were getting on I knew this was going to be a bust (at $200 each!) First let me say, nobody can control the whales and whether they come up or not so we completely understand that but whales weren't the problem. The problem was that the boat is NOT designed for whale watching. It was cramped and loaded to capacity (50) with two rows of bench seating, 3 to a seat no matter what size everyone is. The person by the tinted and water-stained window would be able to see if the wildlife was on their side but not take pictures because the windows only open a sliver (plus tinted windows aren't great for evening whale watching.) The person in the middle of the bench seat may be able to see a bit if they're good friends with their neighbor but the person on the inside aisle of the bench seat will see nothing.

Every whale watching boat I’ve ever seen has outside standing areas around the sides of the boat as well as an observation deck on top. This boat has a very small deck on the back where maybe 10 people would be able to stand but only 5 would be able to squeeze together against the rail to get a picture on one side or the other. Anytime anything was spotted it was “survival of the fittest” to get a picture. I ended up taking pictures of whale watching boats in the area that I wish I had been on.

That being said, Captain Lee was really great and very skilled. Naturalist Tori was fantastic and very informative. We enjoyed them both very much. The problem was the boat. I don’t know what it was designed for but it’s NOT for whale watching.

We were unable to really enjoy the salmon bake dinner. The venue was really interesting but we got there with very little time to catch a shuttle and make it back to the ship on time so everyone from our ship was choking down their food and rushing off to make it back to the ship so we didn’t get to enjoy the property or even get the included dessert.

My recommendation… check what type of boat your whale watching excursion uses before booking.

My husband and I went on this excursion on May 6th. I rated it a 2 because the operator of the whale watching boat was very nice and informative. Other than that rating would have been a 0. We saw about 3 whales but from a very far distance away - saw other boats that were much closer.
The Salmon bake was the biggest joke and waste of money I have experienced in 16 cruises. Go through a line and get one small piece of Salmon which was very average. The so called ribs were just that - rib bones covered in sauce - no meat. Other than a pan of potatoes that had just been brought out all the food was cold and tasteless . Blueberry cake was so dry it would choke you. Beverage line consisted of one pot of coffee and one pot of cider with about 20 people waiting in line.
PLEASE do not waste your money !

Our naturalist Tori and our captain Dan did an amazing job on our whale watching tour. We got lucky and saw Orcas, Humpbacks and even a sea lion. Tori was informative, Dan did a great job of gently navigating the boat.

Our bus driver was great, and made sure we got to our additional stops on time.

    The salmon bake was delicious.

Libby and Captain Terry made this a well informed and enjoyable trip. Got to see many humpback whale sightings. This was booked through our cruise ship. I didn’t get a lot of good photos but that’s okay, it was great just to see the whales with my own eyes. Afterwards we went to the Salmon Bake. At first disappointed because it seemed like every tour bus showed up at once, had to wait for a new batch of ribs, they were good. Even though the staff handling the buffet were extremely busy they were still smiling and never rude. It was raining a little but all the tables are under coverings. It was starting to get cold as it was getting later in the evening and not all of the heaters were lit. The short walk to Salmon falls was beautiful. I would do this tour again.

The good part is that the whale watching was great. We really enjoyed that part. However there were some problems.

When we boarded the bus we were told that there had been a change in plans and that we were going to the salmon bake first instead of the whale watching. We had just finished lunch so eating anything wasn't a priority. The but that eventually took us from the salmon bake to the whale boat was a full 45 minutes late. That's right, we stood in line waiting that long for one of their busses to show up. Following the whale boat excursion, we once again had to wait for a bus. This time it was "only" 30 minutes. We were all wondering how a tour company with its own busses could get the scheduling so messed up on an island with only 50 miles of roads.

And the salmon bake? It was a very nice venue and the people were super-friendly, but the salmon was way, way overcooked. I only had a few bites and gave up. There were a lot of "home cooking," comfort food items on the buffet that people seemed to enjoy. I had a few beers and a glass or two of wine at the bar and they were all good. (Had to get some calories somewhere. LOL) It was still a nice place to walk around.

The whale watching was amazing! Frombboarding to seeing the whales to getting back to shore was fabulous. Captain Lee and Libby are the perfect dynamic duo! Libbys' passion and knowledge of the whales just flows out of her -- we learned so much. Captain Lee's boating skills were awesome....quick to spot a whale and get there. We saw so many it was just unbelievable!!!

We went on a whale watch aboard the North Star. Since the NCL Encore did not dock in Juneau until 2:30, our tour was later in the afternoon. It Was raining but it was amazing! The captain and the girl who did the narrating were both wonderful! We saw so many hump back whales! we saw them Breaching, waving a fin and yes...their whale Tale. So informative and just so memorable. even tho the weather wasn't the best we could open the windows once the whales were spotted to enjoy the view. Do not miss the opportunity to see the whales in the beautiful Auke Bay in Alaska! thank you thank you for such a wonderful day!
