- I2286JAdawnb0 contributionsGreat Mendenhall Glacier canoeWe had such a fantastic outing with our guides to the Mendenhall Glacier! The guides were fun and cared about our experience with them.Written November 1, 2024
- megankj0 contributionsFantastic, up-close view and an amazing day in Juneau! This was an AMAZING trip! I'm kicking myself for waiting so long to write this review that I forgot our guides' names, but they were fantastic (9/20/2024 at 8:30am if it helps get them the kudos they deserve). The canoeing was enough work to feel like an adventure, but not intimidating at all, and we felt like we were in great hands as we learned how to work together to get about 3 miles down the lake from the launching point. We had fabulous close views of both Nugget Falls and the Mendenhall Glacier from the water. Once we landed, we had time to take photos, eat snacks, and enjoy some hot beverages toted out for us before a short hike to learn the history of glaciation in the area. We got so lucky with weather, and the lake was like glass for our paddle back. Absolutely no regrets about this tour- if you're considering it, do it!Written October 27, 2024
- ShaunDenisTaylor0 contributionsThanks for a great trip Josh! The Glacier was stunning, the scenery was amazing, and our guide Josh was unreal. He was informative, high energy, encouraging, and made our excursion memorable - would book with ABAK again for sure!Written September 15, 2024
- NH_travelers_1300 contributionsFantastic views & great team!Just returned from a great trip with Halle, Kayley, and Dan. The team was well organized, fun, enthusiastic, and very knowledgeable. We drove to their shop, suited up with waterproof outfits, boots, and PFDs and drove a short distance to Mendenhall Lake. After a brief safety/paddling instruction we boarded the canoes and paddled out to a beautiful waterfall and Mendenhall glacier. Each member of the team told us about some geology, the trees, and the glacier. Then we paddled back, stored the canoes, and returned. It was a great time and we highly recommend the adventure!Written September 8, 2024
- Dream555649892120 contributionsBest Juneau Excursion! Our day was amazing despite the rain. Our guides, Kaylie and Maggie, were so fun and informative. We learned so much about the glacier eco system. We were truly amazed by Kaylie’s navigational chops. She guided us perfectly through fog so thick we could hear, but not see the canoe next to us or the surrounding mountains. We saw the glacier up close … which was breathtaking. Overall an incredible experience!Written August 20, 2024
- crushmomma30 contributionsHighlight of our Alaska CruiseOur guide Ian was engaging, knowledgeable, and really friendly! He knew so much about Juneau, and Alaska, in general and was great at teaching us the best way to canoe! There were four of us canoeing and Ian took us close out to Nugget Falls and then over to a “beach” right by the Mendenhall Glacier. We hiked around for the absolute best view and had our snacks (provided by them, which were excellent, btw) and rested for a minute. The rocks on the beach were amazing and I could have spent hours just looking at the rocks! This tour is worth every penny and has been a highlight of our cruise so far!Written August 17, 2024
- I5713RGdianew0 contributionsFun adventureThis was a great adventure for us. The canoe trip across the lake was 3 miles each way. It was work but totally worth it. We were so close to Nugget Falls we could feel the mist and we were able to get close enough to Mendenhall Glacier to get great pictures.Dan and Ian were great guides and the group we were with was fun. Highly recommend!Written August 17, 2024
- Txtraveler9610 contributionsCanoe, Paddle & HIke: Fabulous Excursion! Our party of 4 thoroughly enjoyed the Mendenhall Glacier canoe, paddle and hike trip with our guides Dan and Hallie. The paddle portion was totally doable. We saw Nugget Falls up close and personal -- any closer and we would have been caught in the falls! The hike near Mendenhall was informative and provided plenty of time for photos. Our group is so pleased that we chose this trip rather than just going to the visitor's center since we got to see so much more of the receding glacier.Written July 29, 2024
- Sherpa354082696170 contributionsAmazing Experience! We chose this excursion when we were in Juneau based on friends having done it and loving it. And we agree! It was an amazing experience! Hiking through the rainforest to get to the lake was super cool, the canoeing was definitely work but WELL worth it, seeing Nugget Falls from so close was way better than a peak from the visitor's center and having a private viewing and experience at Mendenhall Glacier was amazing. The pictures we got as a family were super special. My 16 yr old daughter and 12 year old son were able to canoe even though it was hard work. The guides were great and had such a love for the glacier and what they do. We learned so much and would do this excursion again in a heart beat! Also, the gear they give you is great!Written July 26, 2024
- kypilgrim20180 contributionsRain doesn't wash away the funWe had a marvelous time, and that was with pouring rain the whole time! Jake was a great guide, and made the rainy day fun with some surprise hot chocolate during our kayaking trip. We couldn't see the glacier because of the fog, but we learned a lot about its history, and we were able to go back and see it later in the week thanks to the great introduction.Written July 22, 2024
- cassandrat4970 contributionsExperience glacier up closeFantast Experience! Josh our tour guide was excellent. Very knowledgeable and clearly passionate on the local wildlife and glacier, making it an absolutely fabulous experience. It does get quite windy and cold once you’re near the glacier so do bring gloves and beanies. We were provided with gear (pants, jackets and boots) as well as snacks which you’ll need after working out to spectacular views.Written July 4, 2024
- MarlaW370 contributionsBest excursion to actually see the Mendenhall glacierThis was an amazing day from our 3 guides including Kendall they were informative helpful and just made the day a delight for everyone in our group. The canoe trip was work but the destination made it worth every paddle . Getting up close to the glacier, learning about the changes in the last few years made it an exceptional experience. I would recommend this trip to anyone who does not mind some work paddling in the canoe since the experience of being up close to the glacier you cannot get anywhere else . I would come back and use this tour group over and over versus any tours the cruise lines sellWritten July 3, 2024
- tracyel20240 contributionsBest views!Dan and Hallie were incredible tour guides! This tour was the most amazing experience. We were so close to the glacier and got to take in the amazing views. The canoe paddle was a great time to spend soaking in all that Alaska has to offer!Written June 25, 2024
- L8181DXnatalieh0 contributionsBest of Alaska! This was by far one of the best excursions I have taken, and all of our family can finally agree on something, that this is a not to be missed opportunity. While pricey, it was worth every penny as there were so many elements included that truly gave us the ultimate Alaska experience. Many thanks to the entire team, and we hope to back again.Written June 25, 2024

This is why I came to Alaska! I would add more stars if I could. Best day of the whole cruise! Leeann and Kiana were our guides and were terrific young ladies with hiking experience and knowledge of the local flora to share. 7 wonderful hours out in stunning nature.
I would comment that if you are not physically fit, and ALSO have good balance and climbing ability- DO NOT BOOK this! It was a 968 ft elevation gain hike. Read the information on their website and do not blindly book this on trip advisor. You will climb up and down large rocks, walk thru streams or water and mud, scramble up some short rock faces with your hands and slide down on your bum. This impacts the whole group of up to 12 hikers (max tour size) as one guide has to always remain with the hikers regardless if they are capable of continuing. This is not a flat walk in the woods for someone just pulling new hiking boots out of the box that morning.
That said, the other thing to note is that the glacier is receding and no two trips will be the same. You aren't walking on the glacier and the ice caves of 2022 and before are now gone. It was fascinating to see the changes made over time by the glacier. I would totally do this trip again given the chance.

We really appreciate your review Donna! This trip is definitely strenuous and ever changing due to glacial recession. The terrain involved is not easy. We are so happy to know we were the highlight of your trip. For adventurous, outdoorsy people, this trek is an absolute dream! We hope to see you again.

Six of us, including the bride and groom from the prior day's wedding, were led through the forest, over the mountain and across the glacier to the ice caves by our phenomenal guide Leah. I can't possibly say enough good things about her and her skills as a professional and fun-loving guide. ()
This was a great experience and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for far more than just a hike. which is why I posted the video titled "Juneau Alaska Mendenhall Glacier Trek" on YouTube.
Hands down this is the most challenging trek most of us had been on and yet it was the most rewarding too.
Great Job Above and Beyond! I'll be coming back again.

What an amazing experience! Leah was our guide and she was fantastic! Very knowledgeable about plants, animals, and the glacier area. This company values safety above all else. We opted for the private trek so we could go at our own pace since I wasn't sure how well our almost 12 year old would keep up. You definitely need to be in shape! This was probably the most challenging hike we have done as a family, about 8 miles total. You will start with about 4 miles thru the woods to more rocky climbing before you get to the glacier. We had crampons and helmets so it was easy to trek on the glacier. Leah even threw in a little ice ax throwing! I had wanted to see an ice cave more than anything, but they told us at the beginning that they haven't had any for 4 years. Lucky for us the glacier is rapidly changing and we got to go in a newly formed one that probably won't last long. It might not have been a giant ice cave to rapel down, but it was still amazing! Such a beautiful blue. We will never forget this experience. My 15 year old rated this and the Tracy Arm Fjord boat tour as the best parts. Thank you so much for an incredible day!

Thank you for your review! So happy you had such a great time with Leah and that is amazing you were able to access a cave! They definitely are a rare feature and constantly change as the glacier changes. Thank you for making a part of your Alaskan adventure.

We had an awesome hike with Josh and Taylor. The pace is fast and there are some really challenging inclines and rock scrambles (I wore hiking pants, but I should have gone a step further and worn pants with more stretch). My family of 5 (hubby and I, two teens and a 12 year old) joined 8 other adults. We relished the gorgeous sights, learned a lot about the glacier and had fun chatting with each other and the guides. The glacier is receding rapidly, I'm glad we got to see it while we still could.

This was a great hike, incredibly scenic and beautiful and we were blessed with excellent weather. Due to the small size of our group, we were able to push on beyond a normal turnaround spot and getting a bit closer to the glacier than might otherwise happen.
Our guide Bella was fantastic and the support that I received from Jess at the office in advance was excellent. Highly recommended!

This was a great hike led by our guide Jeffrey. Jeff was very friendly and informative. The walk is quite strenuous, but Jeff made sure everyone was capable and wearing the right clothing. A waterproof and decent walking shoes/boots are a must.

I can't recommend this trip enough. Corey and Mike were amazing and had far more confidence in my abilities than I do! We spent ages on the glacier. An incredibly rewarding experience and the highlight of my holiday.

The Mendhnal hike, with our guides Jacques and Naomi, was the highlight of our trip, and we could not have had a better time. We saw and did so much, and visited a landscape that was completely unlike anything we had seen before.
Our guides were knowledgeable, friendly, funny and helpful.
First and foremost, they kept us and our kids safe at all times, in an area where safety is paramount, and were obviously experts in getting around the glacier with all of the necessary precautions and gear.
Second we really got to do and see a ton, out on the ice and on our way to it. Our family ranged from kids to mid 50's, and everybody was able to participate in all of the adventurous activities.
Third, through the experience we learned a ton about the local flora, fauna, geology, topography, and local history.
Last, they were really kind, sincere and admirable people who obviously love where they are and what they do.
Did I miss anything? Oh yeah, the lunch that they packed for us also good, and my picky-eater daughter discovered another food (mixed-fruit applesauce) that she enjoys.
I just got back to my office, where two people in my division are cruising to Alaska later this summer, and I've already recommended that they seek out Above and Beyond Alaska, as well as Jacques and Naomi.

We were a group of 8 ranging in ages from 11-55. WE booked a private tour to hike through rainforest and onto Glacier. Naomi and Jacques were our guides and we couldn't have been more pleased. They were so energetic and knowledgeable and funny and kind! They truly made our entire trip to Alaska. At no time did any of us feel unsafe and they showed us things we couldn't have imagined and took us far out onto the glacier. My two boys ages 12 and 15 and the rest of us know that this was an experience of a lifetime. I couldn't recommend this group more and try to get Naomi and Jacques!!!

Thank you for your recommendation! It's a fantastic hike but we absolutely would rate it as an intermediate to advanced level hike. We don't have a big elevation gain, but the landscape and surfaces are challenging. The reward is unparalleled though! The glacier surface is incredible to hike over! We appreciate you joining us and have a great vacation!

I am trying to book your Mendenhall Glacier Trex for September 6th. Arriving by Celebrity Mellennium cruise ship. Where would you pick my group up, please. Thanks
Written August 21, 2022
Our Princess cruise ship is scheduled to arrive at 8 a.m. and the only tour left on our arrival day is at 8:30 a.m. Would that give us enough time to make the tour?
Written March 22, 2019
Yes! That time would work perfectly. We set up those specific tour times to work with the cruise ship's arrival times. We will pick you up directly from the cruise ship dock area and return you there at the end of the tour. Please let us know if any other questions come up! Thanks!

What is the cost for a private trek for a family of 4?
Written February 4, 2019
Hi Kelly - Thank you for asking! To join for a Private Glacier Trek hiking tour for 4 people the price would be $300 per person + 5% sales tax. Please reach out to us directly on our website if you have any additional questions.
Written February 8, 2019
Hi bnk87 - We have ice caves come and go every season. This year we had 2 ice caves form and collapse so it is always possible but not guaranteed. We focus on exploring the glacier's surface and all of the amazing features that form. Definitely worthwhile!
