About
Spend your time in Juneau on an Alaskan wilderness hiking adventure as you get up close to the Mendenhall Glacier! This exhilarating tour will show you a stunning piece of Alaskan nature as you hike through the Tongass Rainforest towards the glacier. Then explore the edge of the glacier on foot where you could see dramatic crevasses and fascinating glacial formations. The Mendenhall Glacier is receding at a fast pace and due to this we are seeing drastic changes to the surface of the glacier. For this reason, it is not safe to walk on the glacier. This trip will spend time exploring the glacier up close and hiking around the edges of it safely from the bedrock. The edge of the glacier has some of the most stunning features you will find; this is where ice formations, tunnels, and tubes tend to form creating those beautiful blue colors. These features are never guaranteed but do form throughout the summer.

This was the best glacier tour we’ve done, and we’ve visited several glaciers. Our guide was Cory, and he was awesome. ABAK provided everything you need: gear (including hiking sticks), food and water. It was a small group with only 3 other people, which was nice. The trail through the miss-covered rain forest was lovely. Cory explained the geological/ecological changes that occur as a glacier recedes, which we were able to witness first hand. The pace was good, and we could stop whenever we needed to add or remove layers, eat, or take pictures without any pressure. We got to go inside an ice cave, which was awesome! Cory was more than happy to take pictures of us throughout the tour. Then we began the glacier trek, which was AMAZING! The crampons were good quality and we felt safe and secure waking over the ice. Cory made sure to show us several glacial features. We had plenty of time unlike some other glacier tours. This tour is a must for anyone traveling through Juneau. The hike back down was challenging at times as the rain made the rocks slippery. Cory was always ready to offer a hand or carry gear through tricky areas or just give advice. It was a spectacular day. I can’t recommend ABAK enough.

It's a solid hike of about 4.5 miles, then you put on your crampons and go walking on a Glacier! The hike is not a flat trail but is very doable (sturdy shoes or boots are a must). It's the prize at the end that you're there for. There was an ice cave there that we got to explore a bit. Then you back track the 4.5 miles back to the car. Our guide was knowledgeable and efficient. Gear was provided and well explained (having never worn crampons before). We enjoyed it and recommend it.

Thank you for your review! That is amazing you were able to visit an ice cave, as they are a rather unpredictable feature of the glacier and come and go as the glacier changes. Thank you for making us a part of your Alaskan vacation.

My fiance and I did the Mendehall Glacier Trek while on a cruise. The entire experience was awesome. Incredible guides that took us onto the glacier and into a couple caves that were simply amazing. The provided all of the necessary gear and plenty of snack to keep us energized. Need to be in decent shape as the hike out to the glacier and back is over 8 miles with some minor rock scrambling.

Great tip - being in decent shape and loving to hike are essential for the Mendenhall Glacier Trek hiking tour. It is a tough 8 miles but so rewarding! Thank you for joining us!

Our arrival in Juneau initially was NOT what we had planned. We were originally supposed to pull into port on Sunday, Sept 9th, but because of extreme high winds, they closed the Juneau channel, and we turned around and docked in Skagway instead. This meant that we had to reschedule 2 days worth of excursions which was NOT fun. However, Liz and crew at ABAK head office were SO accommodating and helped reschedule our hike for the next day when we would be in port in Juneau and we are so thankful because it was definitely THE HIGHLIGHT of the whole trip!

Our guides Brett and Madyson (maddisyn? I know there's a 'Y' in there somewhere), were awesome, made us feel very safe, and were thoroughly entertaining for the 8+ hours we were together. Our group of 9 hikers, and 2 guides (11 total) made good time hiking our way out to the glacier and allowed us to spend so much extra time on the glacier itself, even some repelling! We had a dry sunny hiking day so I would say the hike was Moderate with some strenuous parts where you have to really pay attention to where you put your feet. There were even some spots for scrambling up rocks, which I thought were fun! But can be seen as scary or intimidating to others. On a rainy day I can see how this hike is strenuous but definitely still do-able, the return trip is harder because you're already tired, so watch your steps! For those wondering if they're fit enough, our family (5 adults aged 30-61) were able to complete the hike just fine. We're all active, not ripped or anything, but we run, or cycle, or exercise regularly at a gym and we were fine. Very tired by the end, but really enjoyed the day. Though sturdy hiking boots are a MUST.

The glacier itself is just spectacular! Although it's sad to see the markers of the glacier points as you hike by. It's truly amazing and sad how much has disappeared in the last 100 years. Definitely a trip you have to take before the glacier is all gone! We were able to see the clearest (and tastiest) water on the glacier, find a small ice cave, and repel down a steep slope.

All of us agree that this hike out to Mendenhall was the BEST part of our 2 week trip to Alaska, and definitely a memory to last a lifetime! Huge thank you to ABAK, you guys are the BEST!

Awwww thank you for being flexible even with the scheduling chaos that happened with the cruise ships! It is VERY rare that something affects port schedules and we will do everything we can to adjust, thankfully it was very easy in this case and we appreciate everyone staying positive and rolling with it. The Mendenhall Glacier Trek is perfect for active families! It's such a scenic and varied adventure. Definitely a staff and local favorite! Thank you for choosing to join us and we are so happy it worked out!

Family
We booked a private Mendenhall Glacier trek directly through Above and Beyond Alaska. We were not able to book through our cruise line because our daughter was not old enough to go on the cruise options but I knew we wanted to make a glacier trek happen. I am SO thankful I quickly found Above and Beyond and found an option that would work for our family, they even tailored the day so we got back to the cruise ship on time so don't hesitate to ask them to work with your schedule/needs. We had the most amazing and spectacular time, especially the time spent exploring the glacier, money and time well spent! Everything from pick up to delivery back to the ship and everything in between was seamless, a very professional company and employees. Beau was our guide and you couldn't ask for a better person to spend the day with. He is engaging, energetic, informative, encouraging and safety minded. We all felt very comfortable and safe in Beau's care which is important when you are spending 10 hours with a stranger doing something you have never done before! The tour came with all the gear, snacks (so yummy, filling and plentiful, you won't starve and they give you everything you need to power up) and instructions you need to have a successful trip, just be sure to dress in layers as the climate changes with each passing mile trekked. This adventure was the highlight of our two week trip and something we will remember forever. You know this trip is a winner when a month later your tween and teenager are still talking about it and showing pictures to their friends. Thank you Beau for the amazing memories and knowing the very best picture spots, the pictures you took for us are incredible!

The particulars for any of those doing research like I did...
- Family of 4 (ages 40, 14 and 10) in pretty good shape and hike often
- Our trek was on July 28 and we had a beautiful sunshine filled day
- We all found the hike to the glacier and the glacier itself to be very doable
- We felt the hike back out is moderate (you hike back the way you come in) but only due to the uphill portions when your already worn out from the day, kids did better than we did :) This is when having an excellent guide really comes in handy, he kept us moving and entertained!
- We were able to spend two hours on the glacier (all depends on how quickly you can hike to the glacier and when you need to be back to your ship, they worked with our schedule and the needs of our family) and we saw many attributes of the glacier you can't see unless you are physically on it.
- Unfortunately, there was not an ice cave while we were there but we did NOT leave disappointed, many other things to see and explore!
-HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend this tour and would request Beau for any guided adventure!

Wow, thank you so much for your detailed review! I will pass this along to Beau; he will appreciate hearing from you. It is amazing you had such a beautiful sunshine day! The great thing about booking a private tour directly through us is we have the ability to tailor the tour to fit the needs of each group; this is especially a great option for families. It really enables the group to set their own pace. Beau is great at working with different groups to create an engaging, fun environment while keeping it safe. Ice caves are considered a feature of the glacier and come and go as the glacier changes. There are so many features to be discovered on the surface and sounds like your group was able to spend a couple hours exploring them! Thank you for making us a apart of your Alaskan vacation and come back and see us again anytime!

Our Mendenhall Glacier Trek experience was the highlight of our Alaska Cruise and land tour. Our guide, Matt Berry, was wonderful! He had such enthusiasm and passion for the mountains and the glacier. He shared so much about the Alaska wilderness, geography, plant life and history. And this is his first season! Matt made the entire experience very cool! He had great stories to share and he also took great photos of us! We were fortunate to have a total of 5 very fit hikers in our group. Matt pushed the pace and we were able to keep up. So we ended up with extra time on the Glacier! There were not any more ice caves that we could go in, but we traveled over a challenging ridge that Matt made safer by anchoring a rope for us to hold onto. And then we were able to explore much more of the Glacier. Just amazing being out there. It was a very challenging hike with rocks to climb and uneven terrain, but so worth it! We loved actually being out in the Alaska wilderness. If someone is considering this hike, definitely read all of the details on the Above and Beyond Alaska website. It did help that we trained a little for about a month by walking hills for 30-40 min a few times a week, wearing weighted backpacks and our hiking shoes before the trip. The snacks were more than enough and a wonderful selection. And you get to keep the water bottle! The staff in the office was very professional, answering all of my questions. I even called the morning of the hike asking for advice about clothing to wear and the weather! I would highly recommend the Mendenhall Glacier Trek for anyone who wants to experience a once in a lifetime Alaska adventure. Thank you Matt and Above and Beyond Alaska!

Wow! Thank you for your detailed review; will definitely pass this along to Matt. This is definitely considered a strenuous tour due to the length and the terrain; always smart to train for this type of hike and break in hiking shoes. Glad to hear you were able to have extra time on the glacier and explore longer; it is so amazing to have that experience. Thank you for making us a part of your Alaskan vacation and hope you enjoyed the rest of your trip!

We did the private tour to the Glacier and was an amazing experience, from all the tours we did in Alaska this was the best by far. We were a party of 4 which made things faster and easier than having a big group, we got to spend about 2.5 hours in the glacier thanks to our amazing guide Jacques who was very professional and showed us around as much as we could.
