In the midst of almost every business facing uncertainty my call to HTA could not have been more pleasant. The refund came within a couple days through my CC and I mentioned to the lady taking my call I wish them the best and hope to book again in the future. I wouldn't hesitate in an instant to re-book with HTA. I want all companies to make it through this COVID19 issue, but especially ones like HTA. Wishing you the best and hope to see you soon.

PS, Our trip was set for May 2020

I came to Icy Strait Point, excited for some whale watching. We saw a humpback whale soon after leaving. A little later, we came across many whales later on that breached all the way up. There was one whale that went directly under the boat. We also saw a pod of orcas on the way back along with a sea otter. Overall, while I wish that the boat ride could have gone to Glacier Bay, it was a highlight of Alaska.

We did a whale watching tour with Hoonah Travel Adventures while cruising through Alaska. Everything from booking through to the excursion exceeded my expectations. I had emailed the office to ask about the rate for a group of 8 and no sooner had I sent an email advising we would book I received a phone call from the team (even though I am in Australia) to complete the process. So easy! The bus to the boat was a short walk from the cruise ship terminal. We then boarded our boat - it seated about 20 people. The crew were amazing sharing stories about life in Hoonah and, of course, whales. We saw so many whales. It was peaceful on the water and you could hear the sounds of whales from every direction. Two whales even swam right under our boat. I was too busy admiring them to video it but the crew shared their video with us so we could show friends at home our amazing experience. We spent six weeks on holiday in the USA and Canada and all of my family, including the kids say this excursion was the highlight of our trip. Highly recommended!

Went with Hoonah Travel Adventures, LOCAL Native Company. Captain Paul and his Daughters were very experienced in Hoonah, AK and know the locations of where the Whales live. They have a device which monitors where fish balls are and that's where we see the most Whales. NO breaching during this trip but we saw over 10 Humpback whales and their young. We got great videos too of the Whale Tail. Only 24 passengers and a new boat. Loved it. Highly recommend Them.

Spent much time very near mother and calf humpbacks. We got to watch several them surface and blow several times and then do the high tail way on several deep dives.

This was amazing. Be prepared it was cold on the water. We also took this in combination with wildlife viewing. See below for separate comments on bear viewing. This tour can be taken with whales only.

Whales:
Travel on a multi-level boat with both inside and outside viewing. Most of our viewing was on the port side however we were told it can vary. I would recommend the top of the boat outside. They provide binoculars (one set per roughly two people) we were close enough not to need them. There are refreshments for purchase on the boat. In 14 years they have never refunded, this is where three major waterways meet and whales food congregates. However from any expectations perspective just note that they only guarantee any single part of one whale (this could be a fin or blowhole) so don’t expect the refund. That being said we saw way more than that and results we hear are typical.

Bears:
It was really cold in the woods. The walkway traveling out to the viewing area is not too difficult but there are no handrails and tripping into the water along the side of them wouldn’t be fun so use caution. I would NOT recommend this portion of the tour outside of salmon season. We took a gamble and based on other reviews we were there a bit too early for bears. We did see one on the bus ride but was far away. I recommend this tour mid-late June or later. May was too early and cold and there were no salmon. I could tell that the viewing area would be amazing when they were in season though so don’t be discouraged from taking this portion in the right season.

Overall, totally worth it!

Hoonah took us straight to the whales. We got so close we actually got wet from the spray out of their blow hole. We saw one breach and got in front of then so that they were swimming toward us.

We were on the Celebrity Millennium. The port of call was Icy Strait Point. The local Alaskan Village is actually Hoonah. So we booked our own whale watching tour with Hoonah Travel Adventures. And we were so happy that we did. We saved some money compared to the whale watching tour from the cruise boat. We got on their boat called the “Tail Chaser” with captain Paul. He is so knowledgeable about the whales and the village of Hoonah and all it’s wild life. It was like sailing with a National Geographic tour guide but better. We got to see so many whales. The boat was pretty new and very comfortable. Highly recommend it.

Favorite excursion at any port. Astonishing sights of breath taking whales, adorable sea otters, seals and more. I would highly recommend this breath taking excursion to any one of any age. My family and I had such an enjoyable time.
The staff was absolutely great and very welcoming. Captain Paul made this excursion unforgettable. I learned so much about the wildlife and how amazing and beautiful Hoonah and overall Alaska is. I would definitely come back to Hoonah just to talk to staff again.
Thank you for such an amazing experience that I hope many more will enjoy just as much as my family and I had.
