- 1We will visit the Campus of the University of Costa Rica, which holds some of the largest patches of forest in the San José Metro Area. On our first stop, we will look for resident and migratory birds, incredible insects and amazing plants and flowers. We'll be talking about art, history, indigenous culture, and most of all, nature. Then, we'll visit the main campus where we will be looking for sloths that live freely and hopefully even see the two different species that inhabit our country. DISCLAIMER: This is not a Recue Center or Sloth Sactuary Tour. You will not be able to touch them, if found, the sloths will be seen in their natural habitat, which means most of the time they will be sleeping on the trees. Still, our experience is your best option at San Jose if you're a true nature lover. This is a 2,5h walking tour, some parts will be exposed to intense sunlight. Not a heavy walk, but please consider your physical condition

The diversity of birds in the Tarcoles river is nowhere to be found. The lunch on a secluded beach restaurant was super tasty, fresh seafood.Written October 7, 2024

- matski_0010 contributionsThe Sloth Tour was far more than sloths, but the sloths were amazing. We booked the Sloth tour that took place on the University campus in San Jose. I was a little skeptical about it being in the city proper, but was incredibly happy with the result. Luiz was our guide and he brought the invisible to life - much more to talk about than sloths. His attention to detail in showing us the interlinked ecosystems of fungi, insects, plants, birds and mammals was refreshing and genuinely interesting. As we neared the end our tour we were very lucky to have a slot appear right in our path, not more than 10 feet up in the tree. It was an incredible treat.Written August 22, 2024

- moirad6110 contributionsExcellent Costa Rican birding trips with Oropopo ExperienceMemorable experience! Oropopo Experience customized two half-day trips for me at very short notice. My guide, David Espinoza, was wonderful. He carefully planned outings to excellent birding locations within easy reach of San Jose. Besides being an expert birder, he also is super knowledgeable about the natural surroundings and the history of Costa Rica. His enthusiasm, his love of conveying information, and warm personality made for a first-rate experience.Written July 25, 2024
- HenriK5270 contributionsNight tourWe had a lovely night tour experience with our guide David. He has strong knowledge about Costa Rica’s nature. We would recommend this tour and it was easy access from centrum of San Jose.Written July 24, 2024
- marielav8110 contributionsGreat night tourI loved this tour! I've been attending Oropopos tours and this one grabbed my attention for being a night one! You'll be walking on a small area, exploring slowly the river sides, listening to the fauna in the dark, recognizing new smells and sounds as you learn. My flashlight died out on me in the middle of the tour but luckily our guide was well prepared for that and lend me a spare ❤️Written June 29, 2024
- jraspin0 contributionsStunning views, great food and a very welcome serving of history and cultureRigo was a fantastic guide. Travelling with my daughter, who is herself an animal researcher, it was great to discover our guide was just the same and so shared so much in outlook and interest. We got stunning views of the Irazu volcano and a short, but fun challenging hike at 3300m. The tour continued with a stunning drive around the surrounding mountain (even if it was mostly cloud covered on our day) and a visit to a great traditional Costa Rican restaurant. The tour finished with a view of impressively well-preserved archeological remains I knew nothing about. Learning about precolombian Costa Rica was high on my list so this was a real bonus. Overall we chose this tour for two reasons: it felt like something that avoided heavy tourist traffic and mixed beauty with culture and nature. It did all that. The company behind these tours seems like a very worthwhile organisation that tries to approach tourism with an informed focus on nature and culture while off the beaten path.Written June 26, 2024
- irianaa20210 contributionsImmersive Nature Night Tour with OropopoAnother exceptional tour from Oropopo. It is exciting to get into nature, walking on the trails with the group and starting to pay attention to the details that you normally overlook. You would be amazed by seeing spiders, frogs, and mushrooms thanks to the guide, Rodrigo, and his enthusiastic explanations of the findings during the tour, with extra value from his biologist perspective. We were able to see two small mammals in the trees, so you cannot keep an eye only on the road and your steps—look up carefully to the trees and also hear the sounds of the forest and the night. You can completely forget that you are near the city within that forest. Highly recommended for nature enthusiasts and curious minds alike!Written June 24, 2024
- 675marynal0 contributionsHighly recommended!Absolutely fantastic experience! My guide, Sara, made it unforgettable with her passion and love for nature. Her enthusiasm is infectious, and it was clear she genuinely loves what she does. The tour was perfect for getting acquainted with Costa Rica's stunning natural beauty. - 529sabrinax0 contributionsAmazing wildlife in the cityAmazing experience! Its incredible how much wildlife there is so close to San Jose that I would’ve never thought about. We saw so many animals including a slot, sleeping birds, a kinkajou, a wild porcupine, insects, plants and mushrooms! I would recommend this tour 👍🏻 it’s also easy access, no 4x4 needed.Written June 22, 2024
- vhrojas20120 contributionsAmazing guided night walk in the natureGreat tour, well organized itinerary and route in a clearly determined path. After booking and the day before the tour, I received very useful recommendations which helped me getting there well prepared. We were extremely lucky as it did not rain, but I was prepared for it as it is normal and was expected. Rigo the tour guide was very prepared on sharing his knowledge about many of the mammals, birds, insects, fungi, plants, etc we were able to see (incredible experience!!!). It was lovely to get to the place which is fully immersed in nature, while at the same time is highly easy to get from San José city center and in general from any point of the GAM (urban area). The starting point is easy to find, has a parking lot to safely leave the car and toilets if needed. I highly enjoyed myself and fully recommend it!Written June 22, 2024

This tour is a true gem and I can recommend it to anyone who is looking for something different to do in San José. I never would have thought that you could go out and explore a part of Costa Rica’s nature in the middle of a city. Thank you Ismael for showing us how to find beauty in unexpected places.

This was a fun activity. You never think that in the middle of the city you will see wildlife so readily. Also it makes you discover parts of the city you don't necessarily explore. The guide was excellent (apparently they were short-staffed that day because one of the guides was ill - but you would not know it.) Rigo alternated from Spanish to English to accommodate all the visitors and it never felt rushed. He shared some of the photos and videos he took with the scope making for great memories

The guide Marvin was amazing. Passionate about Costa Rican biodiversity and extremely knowledgeable. He made all the difference, walking through the forest and pointing out so many interesting things and explaining it all so well. Seeing the forest from above is a different perspective that's worth taking advantage of.

Sarah was an amazing guide! She was able to talk about the wildlife and history of the area with ease. Sarah was able to keep our group private in a public setting and entertained. Who knew there was such a wonderful habitat downtown San Jose!

This was such a delightful experience! I never knew there was so much wild nature to be found right in the middle of this bustling city. We saw about 8 different birds — including a hawk going in for the kill. It was really eye-opening tour, and I would recommend it to anybody.

This was a fascinating and unique walking tour. Our guide, Rigo, was incredibly knowledgeable about all the flora and fauna and history in the area, and it was interesting to have the tour in an urban area. He was happy to answer all our questions and posed many interesting questions to keep us thinking. I would recommend this tour, especially if you don't have an opportunity to take another wildlife tour while in Costa Rica.

Amazing wildlife in the city. The tour is led by a group of environmentalists/ biologists that are native to the city. It takes you around the university biodiversity corridor, showing you the plants, trees, birds and animals that around.

Sara was our guide for our tour of 3 people. We were met with enthusiasm and love for nature. The fact that we were a small group made the experience more intimate and enjoyable. We viewed trees, varieties of birds including woodpeckers, leaf cutting ants, butterflies and several sloths. It was a thrill to see them! I would highly recommend this tour. It was easy to walk and view all of these wonderful features Costa Rico has to offer!

I had the most fun with Charly. We toured the university grounds. As a biology graduate I was thrilled and enamored by all of the amazing plants, animals, and insects. We were able to take our time and learn all about the beautiful ecological impact every creature has. Our guide was amazing and brilliant. Definitely take the time to enjoy this opportunity. One tiny reminder there is an entire "rainy season" in this part of the world so IF you don't love the rain like me maybe bring an umbrella.
