The National Park in Cahuita stars a splendid eight-kilometer hike along beaches that are cut straight out a “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie. Start your tour from the Kelly Creek station in Cahuita, a tiny beachfront town, and walk all the way around Punta Cahuita towards the Puerto Vargas beach. Apart from the stunning beaches and tropical plants, the park hides a lot animals as well, including furry friends and reptiles. As the most easily accessible national park in the Caribbean south of Costa Rica, Cahuita is a favorite among many. It consists of 2,732 acres of land and 55,200 marine acres and was created to protect the largest coral reef in the country. The 600 acre reef has around 35 species of coral, over 100 species of fish and mollusks, crustaceans and sea turtles. There are also a few rivers in the park so a variety of wildlife can be seen such as white face monkeys, herons, caimans, sloths, snakes and lizards.

          Perfect Day
Perfect day trip from San Jose. We drove through a historical town on way to La Paz and then stopped at a local coffee farm. We continued on to the wildlife center and then hiked through the waterfall trails. Both were excellent.

          Beautiful La Paz
Beautiful waterfalls and nature reserve. It was really beautiful to be up in the mountains in the clouds. I do feel it was a little overpriced, but then I've found that to be the case everywhere in San Jose. Our tour guide was was friendly and entertaining, and he knew a great deal of information. Overall, a really great tour.

Too expensive for a 1 hour tour
Trip was very expensive. More time spent on the drive than the actual tour. The rescue center was informative but only saw around 10 different animals. Not a good value

The drive made it worth it
How often do you get to stand at the edge of an active volcano? The crater was impressive and the drive up there even better. We had views of coffee farms, the city of San Jose, and the entire Central Valley. Go early to beat the clouds.

          GREAT ALL EXCURSION
This was a fantastic trip. Our host Oscar was extremely knowlegable about the country's history, , culture and the volcanos. The food was excellent at both stops and included in the excursion. The experience at Baldi Hot Spings was relaxing and truly one of the best 30 minute massages ive ever had. I would highly recommend this trip if you have an enitire day to spare.

A Must See in Costa Rica
We visited the gardens as part of a Viator day tour from San Jose. The gardens are set in extraordinarily beautiful surroundings. Walking the gardens and seeing the animals and waterfalls are a truly wonderful experience. Everything here is so serene and peaceful, like you are one with nature. This was our first trip to Costa Rica, and we visited many different parts of the country. We expected to see many animals in the various locations, but it’s not as easy as you are led to believe. We had guides as part of our tours, having binoculars and zoom lenses, pointing out wildlife we wouldn’t have spotted ourselves. This is especially true of the sloths. While we saw several, they are so far up in the trees that they are almost unrecognizable. I bring this up as a positive reason to visit La Paz. Here you can see the animals up close, including sloths, toucans, monkeys, jaguars, ocelots and hummingbirds. Al of the animals are rescues. This sanctuary is very well maintained and the animals look very well cared for. The waterfalls are beautiful as well. Seeing 5 consecutive waterfalls in the same area along a quiet nature walk is amazing. There is a place where you can see two in one spot. A buffet lunch was included in our tour and there were plenty of good choices to pick from, offering Costa Rican and American foods. One thing I’d like to clarify are the steps on the waterfall trail. Other reviewers are correct, there are a lot of steps, 500+. Yes, most are going down, and the paved trail has handrails with dappled shade throughout, making it a pleasant walk. But, there are a good number of stairs going back up at the end of the trail just to get to the gift shop and shuttle bus, I’d estimate about 100+. So you need to take that in consideration. For younger people it will be a breeze. But for older visitors, it may be challenging depending on your activity level. It’s also at the end, which is a little tiring walking up all those steps. So, you don’t have to walk all the way back to the entrance, you can take the shuttle, but you will have to walk up several steps from the La Paz Waterfall to get to the shuttle location. We’re glad we brought our walking sticks! In addition, getting to the big cats enclosures requires a steep walk to get to that area. And, there are many other areas that incorporate steps throughout the park, meaning this park is not handicap accessible. So, if you are up for the hike, definitely visit this incredibly beautiful spot and enjoy the animals and the scenic waterfalls. Pura Vida!

          Great tour
Our tour guide was very knowledgeable about San Jose and made sure we saw lots of things. He took us to an amazing place to eat, it was like visiting grandmas house and the food was so so good.

          Beautiful
Very picturesque but a quite difficult trek. Many stairs to climb but worth the effort. I particularly liked the jungle cats.

          Meeting Latte the Sloth
This was an amazing experience. The Toucan and Sloth Rescue Ranch is a wonderful place. Their mission to rehabilitate birds and animals that have been mistreated, hurt or are in otherwise need of care is so needed and they do a terrific job. We were treated to a video and then a personal visit with Latte the Sloth and guided by Alejandra through the whole campus with a complete run down of each animal's history and progress. What a treat. It is obvious that this is not a job for the staff and volunteers it is a calling.

          Outstanding Tour! The Best!
Amazing tour! You can’t miss this one. I’m an avid traveler and I’ve done a million tours. This was by far the best I’ve ever been on. Our tour guide Agustin and driver Marco were so kind and friendly. Agustin had so much knowledge and passion for his country and culture. It was infectious. La Paz waterfalls and wildlife refuge were beautiful. So worth the making the trip to Costa Rica!
