What to expect
Make the most of your day in San Jose! This tour takes our usual Bites & Sights Tour and combines it with a trip to a pre-Columbian Gold Museum for the ultimate Costa Rican cultural experience. Get your cameras ready because you don’t want to miss a single moment of this colourful local experience. On this San Jose tour, you’ll get up close and personal with Costa Rican life, through local food, history and even the herbal remedies of folk medicine. Enjoy a hands-on lesson on exotic plants, fruits, vegetables and the smoothies they can create in the midst of the vibrant city markets. Nothing could get you closer to authentic San Jose than strolling through the streets with a local as they show you the ins and outs of daily life. Take a wander through the city with us on this tour that takes typical San Jose and turns it into a local experience you’ll never forget. Your San Jose tour starts with a morning pick-me-up cup of coffee in a café located in the Borbons market, where you’ll get to know your guide and relax into your surroundings. From here, we’ll take a stroll through the vibrant market, tasting local fresh fruits while learning about the agricultural history of the area. We’ll visit a number of stands, from a coffee stand where we’ll learn the Costa Rican chorreado brewing method, to a local folk medicine stand where we’ll learn about curing everything from a hangover to a broken heart. Your tour continues along local roads towards the Central Market. There’s no better place to experience local cuisine than the Central Market, a 120-year old building full to the brim with typical Costa Rican food and drink. Here you can sample local delicacies, learn about the herbs used in local medicines, or simply sip on more Costa Rican coffee. The Central Market is an experience that no visitor the San Jose should miss, and with a local guide by your side, you’ll unearth all the secrets behind this San Jose treasure. We’ll refuel from all that exploring with a lunch stop at one of the most historic coffee shops in San Jose. After lunch, we’ll visit a museum that’s home to some 1,600 pieces of gold artifacts, dating back to 500 CE. In Costa Rican history, gold was considered a symbol of authority, and the items in the museum display the craftsmanship of the pre-Columbian period. By the end of your tour, you’ll be full of local knowledge, from food to culture — but if you want to see, do and eat more, be sure to ask your local guide for more tips on things to do in San Jose.

Great “taste” of San Jose!
Feb 2020 • Family
The city tour was pretty much what we expected and wanted! - to get a taste of the city, literally and figuratively. Our guide, Vinnie, spoke English well, and more importantly, he was very knowledgeable about the history and culture of San Jose. He cares deeply about his city, and we appreciated that he wanted to share his love of it. Thank you!

San Jose - Central Market
Dec 2019
This tour starts at the Central Market (our guide was Ernesto). Ernesto took us around the market, explaining a lot of the history of Costa Rica and San Jose. During the tour we were offered coffee, fruits, beef empanadas, ice cream, chocolate coffee, hot chocolate milk, candy, and pork tamales. All the food was great. Finally the tour ended at the Gold Museum. This is a great way to learn the city. After the tour I went back to the central market to shop a bit before going back to the hotel.

Learned about and sampled so much of San Jose!
Nov 2019 • Couples
Gladys, our tour guide, did a fantastic job introducing us to the local cuisine and exotic fruits, as well as bananas and coffee, giving us an unvarnished account of their role in Costa Rican history. The Gold Museum is a must see, especially for the indigenous history and incredible display of craftsmanship going back thousands of years. Again Gladys filled in a lot of context we would have missed! Highly recommend!

Great Guide, Disappointing Food
Aug 2019
Our guide, Vinicio, was awesome. He was incredibly knowledgeable with a great personality. We learned a lot about the history of the city, the country, the markets, and other various sights. However, this tour did NOT include breakfast or a "morning pick-me up cup of coffee" as was in the description and list of inclusions. We started off at the Borbons market where we got to try bites of several types of fruits. Then we walked through the market and got to drink from coconuts and eat the meat inside if we wanted. We each got a small banana at one stall. There was a spicy tomato "shot" drink with a turtle egg in it, only a few people tried it. We got one tiny spoonful sample of an ice cream, one small wedge of a cheese tortilla. Of course you could buy more of anything you liked. "Lunch" was at the final stop, a very tiny coffee and chocolate shop with a room in the back for the group to sit at one table while they served us. We got a small cup of coffee and the "lunch" was just a giant tamale that had been cut into about 3" pieces for each of us to have one. There was nothing else with it. Not really a meal. Then a tiny cup of homemade hot chocolate (which was very delicious). I even had emailed the company to confirm if there really was a full breakfast as the description said, so we could eat first if needed. Was told "it's much more than just breakfast, there's so much food on this tour." We did have breakfast at our hotel, thankfully, because all you get is a few small samples of things and over a 4 hour walking tour, it wasn't really enough. And we're not huge eaters. Bottom line, the tour was very interesting, our guide was excellent and we enjoyed it, but don't expect actual full meals for breakfast and lunch. We didn't get to go to the gold museum, it was closed due to a holiday, so the company gave us the option of visiting another museum, cash back, or credit to buy bags of coffee or chocolate at the last stop. We chose to buy coffee to bring home, and it's very good.

Hello the main idea, is to try food as we walk because if you eat a big breakfast in the walking tour, after all you will feel to heavy to continue walking, usually most of the comments of the tour is too much food, but that it depends of the people, thats why we are always asking to our clients if they would like to repeat the main food is at the end in the choco place with a tamal coffee and pure chocolate drink because is 100% pure we give you a little cup but always with the option to repeat as many times you want. Thanks to share your opinion with us to help us to improved our service. Eric

Great introduction to San Jose
Mar 2019 • Couples
This trip is fabulous. Tour guide Gladys was really good - friendly, knowledgable, relaxed and able to answer all questions. A great way to familiarise with the city and a great way to get to know Costa Rican food. The walk through the markets tasting foods was especially good.

Such a wonderful tour, with the best tour guide (Vinicio) ever!!
Aug 2018
I booked this tour as a last resort since other tours didn't work out. Boy was I in luck, Vinicio loves his job, and it shows. At the beginning of the tour, he asked our party of 7 what we were expecting/hoping for in the tour. When we said we wanted to experience the culture he certainly made it happen. We saw the market up close, including tasting unique fruits. He enthusiastically shared history about the market and the foods. We had a great local snack in the market, and then we walked around the city a bit, again with Vinicio telling us about the sights and history of the area. Completely fun, interesting, and full of facts! We ended up visiting the National Museum since the Gold Museum was closed on Saturday, and that was a real treat. Vinicio was so well versed on San Jose history, you would think that he worked there. He was great to let us take extra moments to snap pictures throughout the whole tour. At the end we enjoyed lunch at a very nice location where we sampled chocolate with our tasty lunch. It was a bonus that we got to see the upstairs chocolate factory, where Vinicio offered history and how to information to me and even to other guests in the restaurant who were not part of our tour. This was very telling about how much he enjoys his job! I've been on a few tour guide led walking tours, and this one was by far the best for the money. I'm glad that the other tours didn't work out this time.

Fantastic Tour and Guide
Jun 2018 • Couples
Ernesto was our guide and he was exceptional! It felt like hanging out with a friend, he was very knowledgeable and passionate about his city and its culture. He took his time we never felt rushed, he was very gracious and I would recommend this tour and Ernesto. Im glad I did the tour early in my visit so that the remaining time there I could appreciate more of the culture and its nooks and crannies. :) The Gold Museum truly astounding, and on opposite end the real farmers market...in the heart of the city, produce for as far as the eye can see, and then some. Very interesting, all of it!

Must-Have Experience in San Jose! Loved having Vinicio as our guide!
May 2018 • Family
I booked this tour for a family of 5. It was an amazing experience - I knew we would be able to try out some foods and visit the gold museum, but none of us expected that we would be offered SO MUCH food (We got to try tons of different Costa Rican fruits, got to drink coconut water, eat freshly made empanadas, as well as a lunch) + learn so much about Costa Rican culture. In the gold museum, he took the time to explain every part of the exhibit.

Vinicio was one of the best tour guides I have ever had. He was so friendly and was always willing to answer any questions about Costa Rican culture. He also spent a lot of time with our tour group - we never felt rushed to end the tour quickly. Thanks Vinicio for such an awesome experience in Costa Rica!

Excellent tour
Ernesto was such a great tour guide! He knew so much about the history and culture of San Jose and answered all of our questions. He had a great sense of humour. The tour through the market was exceptional.
