Puntarenas, Costa Rica tour with Giotours agency.
Before taking the Emerald Princess cruise during the December 2022, we reserved the "Best of Costa Rica" tour as it was offered by the Cruises Only agency. Similar tours were offered by the cruise line, but we had much smaller group (just twelve passengers) and a better price as well.
We were delayed from leaving on time. Our guide Pablo was gracious to give extra 33 minuts waiting time to a couple late passengers to join us, but they did not show up anyway. It took a long time to reach the first stop - fruit stand, where we were treated with large variety of of known and not so known fruits. And this happen to be the highlight of the whole tour.
Continued to the crocs river tour.
We were delayed at the bridge where traffic slowed down in order to observe crocadiles on the river bank below. It happened to be the best chance to see crocs from far away. During the following one hour crocadile river boat tour we were entertained by the boat guide and that was it. We were able to see just a few very small crocs and ones spotted for a few seconds a head of a larger crocodile.
Did not have a chance to spot a single monkey.
Was it a good value for the whole day tour?
It was good to spend time outside of the ship, not so good for the observation of the wild life of Costa Rica.
Good Travels.

Dear Lev740,
Thank you very much for taking the time to write us a review.
We are happy to know that you enjoyed the tour and that the fruit stand tasting was the highlight of your day. As you may understand on small towns when we have a big cruise with tourists the roads and general area fills up and create unexpected traffic on areas where wildlife can be spotted. As you able to note, wildlife is that, wild, so sometimes you are lucky and get to spot animals on the areas they live, but sometimes is harder, and that's how you know you are in nature and not in a zoo.

Our tour was fantastic, way better than we’d expected. It was a huge plus being picked up in the tour coach. Pablo, our guide, was informative, super friendly, and extremely knowledgeable about the plant and animal life, and the culture and economy of Costa Rica. We learned a ton and ate great food along the way. I highly, highly recommend this tour!

We are so glad we booked this tour. It was definitely one of the highlights of our Panama Canal cruise. We saw so many amazing birds, crocodiles and monkeys. I loved it all. Our guide was great! We stopped at an amazing gift shop. I saw so many things I wanted to buy. I strongly recommend this tour to everyone. I have some mobility issues which were not a problem for this tour.

We had a wonderful experience! The highlights were the monkey reserve and the river/crocodile watching cruise. Our guide, Jesus, was knowledgeable, affable and personable. His enthusiasm for his country was delightful. Lunch was good. The bus was clean and comfortable. We've been on eight cruises and dozens of shore excursions. This one was an outstanding experience.

The excursion was exactly as promised but we were unpleasantly surprised with the area that we toured - barbwire fences protected most of the homes & businesses - we assumed that Costa Rica was a 1st class tour destination and found out that we were sadly mistaken. The monkeys were cool but we viewed them from a run-down backyard as opposed to their natural habitat. The crocodile excursion was probably worth the price of admission alone - this was followed by a decent (not great) lunch. The Macaws & Toucan birds were few and far between but our guide did his best to locate them for us. Not sure why they include a city tour as it was not worth our while fighting the local traffic on a warm Sunday afternoon.

Dear Dave M,
We are deeply sorry you didn't like our country as we and millions of people think that is a most magnificent place. But we have a saying in Costa Rica "For taste, colors". Meaning that one person likes red and another one likes blue. Take into consideration that is hard to judge an entire destination for a one day experience while on a cruise.
However, we are glad that you think that the tour was what was promised and you are not reviewing our operation but the country itself.
When talking about the wildlife seen on the tour, please also realize that even though wildlife sightings are common, the fact is that it is wildlife, sometimes it's closer, sometimes further away, sometimes the place monkeys pick as their favorite might not be the human's favorite, and sometimes toucans and macaws are flying away from the roads or restaurants and into their homes. That is hardly in our control. And it is part of the beauty of free nature.
If you ever come back to Costa Rica again don't hesitate in letting us know as it would be our pleasure to show you every detail of this beautiful country! Just access our website for information or write us directly to our email! We would like to show you Costa Rica and prove you wrong :)

As arranged our guide, Pablo and driver, Carlos met us at the ship to start our adventure. We drove through the town of Puntarenas - which USED to be a vibrant fishing village until the fish were gone. Pablo explained how they are trying to make a come back, but it's hard. We did see a bunch of iguana there - just hanging out in a park. From there we drove out into the country, stopped by the side of the road and into the woods to find a group of white-faced capuchin monkeys. Very friendly and cute - Pablo knew how to encourage them to come close enough to touch. Then we drove to the river - where we were met by a boat (just for our group!) It wasn't exactly what I expected because it was a very open river - no canopy of trees. But we saw a LOT of wildlife - a couple crocodile, many birds and lizards. This was followed by a delicious lunch in a open-air restaurant. Next we again headed into the forest to look for birds - and saw macaw and tucan (along with a stellar view of the river and coast). We made a short stop at a fruit stand with an almond bush in the parking lot. Last stop was a HUGE gift shop - with great prices and free coffee samples. Pablo gave us enough time to make our purchases and helped us pick just the right coffee. We were returned to the ship in plenty of time. I just wish all excursions worked out this well!!

We enjoyed this tour while our cruise ship was in Puntarenas for the day. I love booking the TripAdvisor/Viator tours which are so much better than those offered by the big ships (less people, more sights, less money!) Our guide was waiting for us as we exited the ship. We had a comfortable bus for our day around beautiful Costa Rica. Jesus, our guide, was excellent---full of history, fun stories, and efficient wrangling of the group. We got great photos of the monkeys. Enjoyed fruit and treats at the farm stand. Had an exciting ride down the river, which was full of crocodiles (they stayed in the water) and amazing birds of all colors. The lunch was really good with grilled chicken, fish, steak and an array of veggies and dessert. This tour gives you a full busy day of seeing the highlights of the area, perfect for a port day in Puntarenas or Puerto Caldera, Costa Rica!

We booked a private tour for our group of 6 several months before we travelled. All was confirmed and well. 1 week before we left I received an email that there were 4 cruise ships coming into Port that day and would I be willing to go on a bus of 17 people. I respectfully said 'no' we were looking for a more intimate experience. They replied 'no problem'. When we got off our ship, they were right there, they put us in a van with 6 other people and said they would drive us to our private van. 20 minutes driving through some crazy traffic and sketchy streets and we pulled off the side of the road and were told to get out and get in another van. Our guide was polite and had good information. We went to see the monkeys, which was a cool experience but pretty much was in someone's backyard, was not very clean. Then we went to the 'fruit orchards' which was a roadside stand which was mobbed with people and had very unclean restrooms. We bought some bottled water. We then headed up to find the scarlet macaws, basically stopping by the side of the road to see them up in the trees. The 'lookout point' was in a restaurant bar, the restaurant looked nice, but was strange to just have tourists there who weren't customers. We then headed to the Tarcoles river for the Jungle Boat tour. We got on a boat with about 25 others, was neat at first but lasted way too long, 70 minutes, would have been better as a 30 minute tour. We then headed to lunch in a nice outdoor seating area. The food was good, probably the highlight of the trip. We were supposed to go to the supermarket after for shopping but we had seen enough and asked to be taken back to the boat. The town is very run down and not well taken care of. The traffic was very bad as well. We were let off right at the port and headed back to our ship. The driver and tour guide were very nice and raised the level of my review, however the experience did not live up to what was promised on the website.

Dear Mary N,
We are deeply sorry about this experience. They day of your cruise, there were four other ships in the same area, and the whole region was very crazy. Transports and guides were hard to find, and some of them even canceled at the very last minute.
The wildlife sightings in general in Costa Rica are very spontaneous and sometimes the places they choose as their favorite are not what humans would pick as their favorite. But then, again, it is wildlife.
We deeply apologize for not filling your expectations, but there were many situations that, because of this very specific day and situation, were out of our control.
If you ever want to see more of the country on a regular vacation, and for a longer period we would be more than happy to show you every detail of this beautiful country! Just access our website for information or write us directly to our email!
