- Mikaylamcadams0 contributionsSo glad we booked this last minuteI reached out to Terra Travel Costa Rica approximately one hour before their next tour and they were able to accommodate us. Their communication was quick and easy. Sergio was our guide and was so informative and personable. We all felt totally comfortable asking him questions and generally conversing with him about the area. Sergio makes the tour a great mix of cultural and natural education. My favorite part, though, is how interactive it is. You learn about the history of cacao, coffee, and sugar cane. However, you also get to smell medicinal and cooking plants/spices and try a few traditional Costa Rican drinks (the last had the option of a small amount of cacique but all can be non-alcoholic). As an added bonus, we also saw iguanas and a coati (who apparently frequents the area). Accessibility wise- the tour is over flat grounds, a small amount of walking over some grass. There is a bathroom and water available.Written February 11, 2025
- R7441FVsamanthas0 contributionsFantastic/informative TourWe didnt realize when we booked this that we were going to be the only ones on this tour. It was the last tour of the day, and even though we were the only ones, Sergio did not seem annoyed or try to rush through it. He was very knowledgeable of everything. Very personable. 10/10 recommend.Written January 22, 2025
- Connie J0 contributionsQuality tourSergio was our guide, very knowledgeable about the plants and animals. He didn’t rush through the tour, gave us all a chance to take photos. Very informative .Written January 20, 2025

- ShanTimes0 contributionsEasy to Book, Good Value for ExperienceEasy booking. Excellent communication. They arrived on time to pick us up from our door step in clean modern van/bus. Our tour guide Sergio was engaging, knowledgeable, and funny. The tour was very interactive and tactile. We were encouraged to use all of our senses in the process of learning about the history of chocolate and coffee production and what makes Costa Rican produced flavors unique. If we return to the region, I want to do a night tour with this company, hopefully with the same guide. Highly recommend!Written January 1, 2025
- ErinW6380 contributionsHighly recommendWe loved this tour. It was so informative. It was really fun and convenient to our place. They picked us up from our Airbnb. The tastings of all the chocolate and coffee was really outstandingWritten December 24, 2024
- G4754EZgregk0 contributionsWorthwhile tour, definitely recommend, learnt a lotWe learnt a lot about the good qualities of the cacao bean. I’m never eating milk chocolate again, just dark chocolate! Juan was a great guide and is very knowledgable. Highly recommend doing this…Written December 20, 2024
- tamarar5500 contributionsGreat experience, see how your coffee/chocolate and experience it in new ways!Sergio was a wonderful guide and I would highly recommend him. Not only is he extremely knowledgeable about every stage of the chocolate growth, development and production, he also loves the subject and this comes through clearly on the tour. We started by seeing the plants in different stages and learning about their growing conditions, the incredible way in which they are pollenated and the differences in the varieties. You will get to see coffee, chocolate, cinnamon and vanilla bean plants, which are all growing on the plantation. The real highlight of the tour is making your own chocolate from the beans, and then enjoying what the Aztec referred to as the “drink of the Gods” which is unique and delicious. I can’t wait to make this for my friends at home! There was also a demonstration of different ways to make coffee and the best way to enjoy it. We enjoyed a cup of Costa Rican coffee which was very tasty. Then we helped press sugar cane into another delicious drink. All in all this was an awesome experience and I would highly recommend. We went as a couple, one of us loves coffee and the other loves chocolate and we both would tell everyone we know to take this tour and make sure you ask for Sergio. He really made this tour come to life for us. If you love coffee and/or chocolate this is a must-do!Written December 17, 2024
- 75donr0 contributionsGreat cacao tour and experience.I am actually taking a professional chocolate class in the U.S. and it was just as I had read. The cacao tour ( and a look at vanilla plant/bean) was informative, hands-on, and included a wonderful tasting at the end. Worth the effort. Recommend highly. (There were several children in the group and they engaged them so they stayed interested.)Written December 17, 2024

We started off with a short hike, learning about vanilla, herbs, and other plants. We prepared vegetables, and tortillas in a fun and lively atmosphere. We ate a delicious meal which included what we prepared as well as a chocolate sundae. The staff was friendly and helpful. We had time to get to know the other participants who were from different backgrounds.

We had a great time. Brian was professional and knowledgeable. It was informative as well as fun. There was six in our group and we really liked that the operation was family run. Brian’s mom did the cooking, his cousin helped us and Grandpa was there as well. Highly recommend.

This was so fun , we had Ronaldo and Ellie helping us cook and learn about medicinal plants . Extremely informative .. loved learning how to make a traditional casado , it's my favorite meal. Learned so much about different types of healing for herbs as well. If ur worried about the cooking part being hard don't bc it's deff simple even for the most beginner type !

Fabulous!!! The cooking class and garden visit was a highlight of our Costa Rica trip and a nice change from the more active outings. Our guide Gregory, a multi-lingual (flawless English, French, Spanish, and even German) biologist born in CR, was a trove of information on the plants, permaculture, and, of course, the cooking class. We loved the experience, where it felt like cooking with friends and sharing (the very generous portions and delicious food). Highly recommend. We were a multi-generational group of 6, and the outing seems suitable for many, non-cooks and advanced cooks included, because of the local ingredients utilized. A sneak peek of the chocolate making facilities was also included - now we wished we had had enough time to come back for that tour.

This cooking class was one of our favorite experiences during our stay. Learning how to cook a traditional Casada while learning the culture and history was such an amazing experience. Highly highly recommend.
