Playa Negra is just outside Puerto Viejo. We are the last building on the right on entrada pan dulce. Look for Talamanca Chocolate on google maps. We are the last building on the right, a low brown building with a green metal roof.

      Enriching & engaging!
Unexpectedly the best tour on our trip! We were interested and looking forward to the tour but it ended up being an incredible experience. Fun little farm complete with dogs and chickens. You get a close up with the trees and fermenting cocoa then head inside to taste and learn all about the fruit. Never knew there was so much to learn. We went over by an hour I believe so money well-spent. Really engaging and inviting atmosphere where you felt free to ask any question. A great teacher and we left feeling so much more knowledgeable about not just cocoa but also the Costa Rican culture.

      Great fun
My wife Charlotte and I were staying more or less next door to Ancel when her chocolate making course was recommended to us. Out of curiosity we went along and had a really great time. Making chocolate bars and balls from the bean right through to the finished product. Starting at a cacao tree with a few interesting facts and some history we then went inside to get chocolatie. Ancel is highly informative and very skilled at her craft and also makes soaps and lotions and knows loads of medicinal uses for plants and trees. Go and see her spend some time and come away the better for having met her. You will also come away with chocolate you made yourself.

Avoid, avoid, avoid. My family was on vacation in Costa Rica and booked an activity with Talamanca Chocolate. We called the venue the morning of to inform them that we were traveling with small children. We are clearly not from the area, so we were following Waze, as was recommended by the Ticos we met on the trip. When we arrived near the destination, Waze indicated that the activity was located at the top of a steep hill that was inaccessible by car. We spent about 20 minutes trying to climb the hill in the car and on foot. It was not only risky but potentially very dangerous to even attempt with small children. We also called the host/venue, but no one answered the phone, and no one returned our call. When we arrived back at our hotel, we immediately requested a refund, as we were not able to do the activity due to the previously described circumstances. They never called us back, and my whole family was disappointed. We've since reached out to Talamanca Chocolate (through Expedia) several times, and all requests for a refund have been denied. It's a shame we were unable to take part in the activity, as we read their previously good reviews. But at this point, I wish they would just say that they want to earn money for doing absolutely nothing because that's exactly what this situation boils down to. It shows a lack of integrity, which is a shame, especially since this is not the only chocolate-making option in the area. The next day, we found Cacao Trails - Museo de Cacao which is just down the road, more affordable, and gave us a chocolate-making experience to remember!

Absolutely amazing! Woman who ran it was incredibly knowledgable, funny, and provided us insight on the history and methods of chocolate making. On a eco farm with chickens and dogs. Made our own chocolate from beans to bar. My kids had a blast! Strongly recommend!

We were so fortunate as a family to have this tour to ourselves when we went, and enjoyed this class just as much as we enjoyed the thrilling activities we did in CR. Ancel was Incredibly knowledgeable about cacao, exemplified by our starting outside at the tree in order to learn about the history of the plant first. Once inside, we partook in every step she would go through herself when she makes chocolate to sell, which once again was so much more enjoyable for our family since we were lucky enough to score a private class. When you're done you get to take home your chocolates and cacao nibs you worked with, and Ancel even made us a chocolate drink she would have with her breakfast while we waited for our taxi to arrive. 10/10 experience we didn't plan on doing in CR but are so glad we did!

Ancel taught us about the evolution of cacao amongst humans, current production around the world, varying processes involved in making chocolate, and so many other uses of the plant. She has many other interesting things to share about the farm. We left with far more knowledge than we came with, and we really enjoyed connecting with the cacao, Ancel, and the other attendees. I highly recommend this tour and would even come back to ask all the questions I have then pondering since the tour. Very cool to return to our accommodations following the tour and immediately recognize cacao all around us...and know how to use it!

What a wonderful way to learn about the colourful history of chocolate! Ancel is a passionate storyteller of how humans and the precious cacao have evolved to the “modern” bar. A truly enjoyable experience. And a tasty one at that!!!

One of the best things we did during our 12 days in Costa Rica. Ansel was just a wealth of information about many things, not just chocolate. We learned so much about the history of the craft and the area. She has such a great sense of humor and keen ability to explain things to all. Christian was helpful and added to the delightful experience. So glad we attended this class, it was worth every penny...for both visitors and locals.

We had a most entertaining and informative morning at Salamanca. We were led through everything from the history of the Cacao plant all the way through to its production to a product we all know and love as chocolate. Highly informative and we were able to enjoy the fruits of our own labors as well, with some delicious take home chocolates.

Wasn't overly excited about going to some dull old chocolate factory and the accompanying retail opportunities, How wrong was i no hairnets and white coats here! Far from it , but was so interesting tour/class lead by someone who knows and loves what they are doing, no after sales had to go into town to buy the chocolate , But strangest thing, a coincidence maybe , before my visit i waiting for surgery , after learning about all the medicinal benefits of the beans , drinking the strange old coca drink and jumping in the waves at black beach on the way home. my internal issues seemed to re set ,so looking good no operation , you would not get that on a trip to Disney !

We all enjoyed learning so much about chocolate! It was a great tour with information about many cultural, uses of chocolate and hands-on instruction for making our own chocolate. Everything tasted delicious and the instructor knew so much.

We all really enjoyed our visit and it was a highlight of our time in Costa Rica.

This is one of the best experiences we had in Puerto Viejo. Ancel was incredibly knowledgeable and engaging - great energy!
We went way beyond making chocolate - we learned about the tree, the history, and different uses of cacao.
I would HIGHLY recommend doing this!
