Itinerary
- 75X4+4M9, Guanacaste Province, Tamarindo, Costa RicaWe'll meet on the beach, directly in-front of El Chiringuito Restaurant
- 1We’ll meet on Playa Tamarindo, directly in-front of El Chiringuito Restaurant, where rest rooms are available. We’ll cover some important safety information and correct kayaking technique, before paddling approximately 25 minutes across the ocean. Once reaching the island we’ll land on white sands to explore the lava fields and rock formations caused by a volcanic eruption, and different vegetation; including cactuses and Agave. We’ll visit a unique beach where a great variety of shells can be found. Within the vegetation we’ll also observe a variety of wildlife; different crab species and nesting birds. In the clear water tide pools we’ll see sea urchins, brittle star fish, sea cucumbers, trilobites and fish. There are a couple of blow holes and other interesting things. The island is surrounded by clear waters, perfect for snorkling! We’ll stop at a couple of different points to seek out fish and other marine wildlife, before breaking for some refreshing fruit and snacks and heading back by kayak to Tamarindo Beach.
About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- colbyh7140 contributionsAwesome time seeing all the animals!Got to see lots of birds and monkeys while kayaking and hiking! Luis was very knowledgeable of the history of the area and uses of plants and fruits native there. Would highly suggest if you enjoy seeing different animals and hearing some history. Make sure to bring bug spray as the bugs are relentlessWritten August 9, 2024
- Babus19550 contributionsDisappointedAs the date of our turtle tour approached, I texted Luis to ask if there was any turtle activity visible. He offered alternative activities but I let him know it was the end of our holiday and I was only interested in seeing turtles. My research told me we were a bit early ( June) for the turtle season in the Tamarindo area. The day before, I asked if I needed to cancel. We went ahead with a visit to Playa Junquillal. Unfortunately we saw nothing but hermit crabs. Luis was very knowledgeable about turtles and we enjoyed listening to him on the drive. I appreciate that he rode a bike up and down the beach so we didn't have to walk and search with him. But I feel the guide must know whether we are too early in the season or not. Although he will say we can't control nature, we wasted a lot of $ and time. He offered a free tour if we return in the future.Written June 25, 2024
- elizabethhN8647BO0 contributionsLuis the Turtle Man!Fantastic evening tour provided by Luis! We went on the tour 5/20/2024 which was stated to be the “last” evening tour within true turtle season. While we only saw one turtle after patiently waiting, that’s all we needed! We were able to observe a green sea turtle dig its nest and deposit its eggs up close! What an experience!! Everyone in our small group of 9 got great pictures and videos. Luis picked up some from the hotel in Playa Conchal, we followed and another car joined in along the route. Flashlights were provided (where allowed) and instructions were given as to not disturb the turtles. Luis provided education on what to expect, turtle behavior, stages of nest building and other interesting information. He was always very respectful of the wildlife and ensured his guests were as well, ensuring no one disturbed them with noise or lights. Snacks were provided at the end of the tour. Well worth the money, especially for such a show!Written June 1, 2024
- Nils70 contributionsDoes not disappoint- the turtles are incredible!Well worth the time and $50. Free pick up and interesting truck ride thru rural areas for 45 minutes. A short hike thru woods down to a secluded beach. Beautiful sunset and our guide Luis was extremely knowledgeable and personable. We saw 3 large turtles come up out of the water and many tiny babies hatch and return to the water (from other mommas 60 days prior)Written March 30, 2024
- regenw20220 contributionsturtle nestingamazing time!! i have always wanted to see baby sea turtles and i got to see multiple come out of their nest and see the mama turtles come up the beach! luis was an amazing guide who was super knowledgeable about the turtles and cares about them which i appreciate a lot.Written March 30, 2024
- emilycP7212PB0 contributionsKayak estuaryFantastic communication from Tom from start to finish with the tour. We loved his sense of humour and how he did not patronise us with the kayaking! He trusted us. The short hike was a highlight and seeing how invested and interested and knowledge Tom is about his work is infectious! We saw Monkeys and many birds and learnt about trees! Tom also went above and beyond and helped us organise a transfer 😊Written March 20, 2024
- Sylkon0 contributionsMy experience with Costarican turtlesAmazing experience, well organized, we saw turtle babies leaving the nest and the adult turtle laying the eggs. It was a fantastic experience. we had small group of 4 people but later other big groups came. Babies leaving the nest and going to the sea are tiny and in the dark not visible so there is a danger they can be damaged by people moving around the beach. It was that sad side of my experience 🙁Written March 5, 2024
- Sherpa2595870 contributionsGreat kayaking tour!We had amazing time kayaking the Tamarindo estuary and the mangrove forest. We saw howler monkeys, sleeping bats, and hawks. Luis Ernesto was a great tour guide explaining the flora and fauna of the region. If you want to learn or see more than just the average boat trip will tell or show you, this is the right tour for you!!Written February 20, 2024
- CaptainHook890 contributionsEstuary tour and hike.We had a great boat trip up the estuary with a hike in the jungle. Too windy for the kayak trip, so Tom recommended a switch to the boat trip. So many birds, a young crocodile, monkeys and the iguana. Learned so much from Tom and the boat driver. They kept spotting wildlife where we could hardly see anything. Tom led the hike and has a vast knowledge about the plants and animals. Amazing and highly recommend.Written January 31, 2024
- SusanS3190 contributionsGreat way to learn about the park and be in nature.Had a very fun day kayaking and learning about the history, flora and fawns with Luis. He was very knowledgeable and made the excursion interesting. We were very glad to have spent the morning with him.Written December 23, 2023
- AK-travelr0 contributionsAwesome, intimate adventure! We toured with Luis two days: once to kayak into the estuary before sunset, and then to see the nesting sea turtles. Both were outstanding experiences. Off the beaten track to places we never would have ventured alone, with an experienced naturalist (and world traveler) Luis Ernesto. We arrived to the deserted beach just at brilliant sunset and immediately observed a turtle dragging herself up the beach to begin excavating her nest, and then the deeper smaller hole into which the eggs are deposited. Much later, several large groups showed up and we departed, feeling grateful to have witnessed this ancient ritual of survival.Written December 19, 2023
- 816katyr0 contributionsGreat for adults, challenging for young kidsWe got lucky and saw two turtles on our adventure! So cool. However, I would not recommend taking young children unless they are very, very patient. Our kids had a hard time waiting while the guide was looking for turtles. Amazing experience for adults.Written December 1, 2023
- ccWhiteDog0 contributionsRecommended tour to see one of natures truely remarkable creatures.Luis is a knowledgable, patient and enthusiastic tour leader. He met us at a local spot in Tamarindo and loaded us in his 4X4 and we set off just before sunset on a nice mid-November evening. The whole way there he explained to us the life-cycle of the Green Sea Turtle, patiently answering our questions. At a certain point we turned off the paved road and headed slowly down a rough dirt path (with stream crossings) until we arrived at a secluded beach, about 45-minutes after leaving Tamarindo. Spraying up with bug repelant and equiping ourselves with flashlights, we made our way to the beach. We waited in our small group while Luis went down the beach in search of a Green Turtle. There was no guarantee that we would see one. We had good fortune in that he spotted a big one making her way back to the sea after an unsuccessful attempt at climbing the steep sand dune. We stayed behind her for 10-minutes as she made her way back to the ocean for what Luis described as a rest. She will likely try again at a different time or a different beach. Lots of pictures were taken in the faint red-light of Luis's flashlight (this colour is the only one we are allowed to use for fear of confusing the turtles). We were all delighted to see one -- Luis said that there are tours where they visit several beaches and do not come across one and other tours where they might see 2 or 3. With thunderstorms looming, we decided to head back. In all, a delightful and informative trip. Recommended.Written November 15, 2023
- Z7079DHroyl0 contributionsUnbelievable Turtle TourOur guide Luis was amazing. He went the extra mile for us and didn’t stop until we saw turtles nesting. Because of his perseverance we not only saw one turtle but 7 on our tour and took home a video of one of the turtles laying her eggs. It was amazing and would definitely recommend!!Written October 28, 2023
- shaymD8628TK0 contributionsTrio of a lifetimeOur guide to as extremely knowledgeable in turtles and nesting. Even though we didn’t see any turtle, the experience we were provided was one of a lifetime. Highly recommend!Written September 11, 2023

Luis asked us to arrive early at 8.00 AMand we thought it was to start earlier than planned.. We found out he wanted us to set up the kayaks for all the other participants. In addition he wasn't there on time himself and arrived late. He proposed that we could go without lifevest since he had forgot them.
During prepping of the kayaks Luis screamed at us when we didn't do exactly like he wanted it.
The kayaking was dangerous since he sent out a family of 5 by themselves (3 kids) and was far away from the group himself. We kept together with the group and made sure everyone got back to the beach (the family had to take a break at some boats). On the way back Luis guided us (from far) back to the beach close to some rocks. When we got my kayak got onto the beach Luis was not there because he fell in the water himself and his kayak was far down the beach.
The snorkling was nice, however, he only brought fins for 6 out of 8.
Luis is very chauvinistic and rude towards kids and women. I have no idea how anyone could have had a níce trip with him.

Do NOT book this. We were confirmed to meet at El Chiringuito for the morning trip, but Luis never showed up. When I called him later he apologized and rebooked us for the next afternoon, but then he messaged back that he had been wrong about when low tide is and needed to book for the following morning. We told him we just wanted to cancel, and he said he would process the refund that night. He did not. Once home, I contacted him again and he said he would get it done "this week" and thanked me for my patience. After 3 more days he still hadn't paid. I had to settle it by filing a dispute through my credit card company.

Capitan Island is very beautiful and the diversity of sealife in the tidal pools is really incredible. Las Baulas National Park is amazing and very much something to experience. Kayaking to the island was interesting and our guide provided lots of instruction about what to do.

Tom was the BEST tour guide for our group of 18!!! He was incredibly kind and knowledgeable about the estuary and the history of the land. He was knowledgeable about the animals and trees and plants found naturally and imported. The hike was more of a nature walk, so it was easy for everyone in our group to do. It was one of the best tours we did and everyone in our group adored Tom!!! Thank you!

This was a great tour! We were fortunate to see baby turtles making it to the ocean and 2 moms making their way to the beach. It was also great to be on the beach in time to see a gorgeous sunset. Make sure you wear good shoes, dark clothes and bring your bug spray. Would do this tour with Tom again!

About 7 years ago my wife and I met Tom on the beach and instantly decided to take his tour. He was energetic, kind, and knowledgeable. He was an interesting person and I felt like I knew him from a past life or something. Definitely recommend his tour!
All he asked in return for his service was to leave a review, and I promised I would. It’s been on my to-do list for 7 years now and it feels really good to finally do it.
Thanks Tom!

We had a wonderful time with Tom going to Capitan. The paddling was quite the adventure and the island is beautiful. We snorkeled and took a lovely walk and saw animal life and critters and really enjoyed ourselves. Tom was a pleasure. Thank you for starting our vacation in such a lovely way . Now, when we look out on the island from the beach, we know we’ve been there!

Unfortunately, I wasn’t feeling good because our guide screamed at us before and during the kayaking. Even at children… on the Island, it was ok but the kayak no. If our guide was more polite and would smile more, it could have been fun.

Do you have any availability today? Also, what would be the cheapest cash price for 2 adults plus 5 kids. We did this tour before, and we are debating on going by ourselves and just renting kayaks. My phone is 972-800-0964 if you could call me, that would be great.
