Stop: 6 hours - Admission included
Hotel Pick up You will be picked up from your hotel journey one hour through the back roads of Guanacaste’s Sabanero (Cowboy Country) Province to Palo Verde National Park. 2 Hour Boat Safari on Tempisque River After a scenic guided drive, you will then hope into your boat and spend 2 hours on the Tempique River that borders the Palo Verde National Park, best known for its murky water and spectacular wetlands. Your naturalist guide will help to spot wildlife in the dry forest vegetation and mangroves. There are over 600 different species of birds, both local and migratory. Appropriately, this tour is a real treat for bird watchers, as you’ll have the chance of spotting a wide range of fowl that includes storks, egrets, spoonbills, grebes and more. Also be on the lookout for monkeys, iguanas, scarlet macaws, anteaters, crocodiles and caimans, which can often be seen lingering along the banks of the river. Costa Rica Style Lunch After your boat safari, you will be taken to eat a plentiful Costa Rican style meal called a Casado with rice, beans, salad, plantains, choice of meat, and more. Dietary restrictions can be accommodated. Guaitil Pottery Village Before heading back, we will visit the Guaitil Pottery village that is famous throughout Costa Rica and the rest of Central America for its pre-Columbian Chorotega style. They will show you how they make the pottery and there is an opportunity to buy some if you like!

This boat safari was the perfect way to see the Costa Rican wildlife up close and personal! Ariel was a great tour guide! He and our boat driver were excellent at spotting animals along the riverbanks and getting us as close as possible. There were crocodiles swimming right alongside the boat. The best part was the monkeys! We parked the boat right next to their tree and the monkeys were literally climbing on our boat. Our kids were able to take selfies with the monkeys and we absolutely loved it! As hot as it can be in Costa Rica, the ride was very comfortable under the roof of the boat. I would highly recommend splurging for the private tour if you can. That allowed our kids to have a chance to drive the boat, the ability to move around to get the best views of the wildlife and all the time they wanted to interact with the monkeys. A great half-day excursion!

The tour was great, and Ronny and his driver Jeffery are the ones you want along on this one. They are fantastic guides and take the time to explain everything well. They are also very helpful and accommodating if there are certain stops that need to be made along the way to the boat ride. The boat ride was fun, my group saw a couple of herons, crocodiles, an osprey and even a white face monkey. The driver would turn around for us to get and better look and Ronny would take some great pictures for you using his binoculars, ask him about it! After a typical Casado lunch we went to a place where they make awesome pottery and Ronny even showed us the process behind it, one of the main reasons you should have him as a guide for this trip too. I bought a small piece but they have a good variety at the spot and cheaper than it would be at the souvenir store. A good trip overall.

What an amazing experience! We booked direct through Palo Verde Boat Tours and it was $55 USD per person with $11 pp for the lunch which was absolutely delicious! Every individual we encountered for this tour was delightful, kind and helpful. We were staying in Playa del Coco so it took us about an hour to get there and most of the road off of 21 was a bit rough but the scenery was beautiful from the many sugar cane fields, cantelope, just true life in Costa Rica. Incredible on the boat to see crocodiles swim literally alongside the boat (and a bit scary), howler monkeys in the trees, iguanas the size of yard stick - truly an amazing experience. Book direct with them for the best price!

My wife and I decided to take this tour during our first visit to Costa Rica. Overall it was a good experience but we wouldn’t do it again. We were picked up on time from the JW Marriott where we were staying, but then proceeded to change vehicles 2 times over the course of 2 hours and 45 minutes before finally arriving at the boat dock. It was slightly concerning when we drove past the turns that we would have needed to take to the boat tour, almost arriving back in Liberia, before making the last transfer to the bus. We had no knowledge this would happen and what should have been a 1 hour drive to the dock turned into several hours. The return home was only slightly better, with just one vehicle transfer.

Our second complaint is that we thought that our tour was with “Nature’s Way Costa Rica” but it was actually with Jacamar Nature Tours. It was slightly unsettling feeling like you’re being tossed around and have no idea where you’re going or what you’re doing.

That being said, once the tour finally began, it went well. Our guide was very knowledgeable on the local culture and nature in Palo Verde National Park. My wife and I are both very nature loving people and have an above average understanding and knowledge of animal life and behavior, but we still learned things. The boat tour itself wasn’t quite 2 hours, actually about 1.5, and we only explored a very small section of the Rio Tempisque, which was disappointing, but we still saw tons of crocodiles, monkeys, birds and more.

Once the tour was over we headed to Rancho los Coyotes for lunch and a pottery demonstration. Lunch was incredible and so tasty. We love trying cultural dishes and foods when we travel and this was one of the best. It was just basic enough that picky eaters won’t have problems, but still very delicious. The pottery demonstration was good and interesting and of course there’s a sort of gift shop where you can buy some of the pieces.

Overall the experience was good, but we wouldn’t do it again. I would highly recommend that if you haven’t done it before, do it, but expect to spend more time than you think in a vehicle.

Similar experience to others regarding pick up: We were told to be ready for pick up at Riu Palace before 7 a.m. and we were. At 7:10 we were still waiting, a Native's Way bus pulled in but it was not for our tour. The guide on that tour contacted the office and arranged for another van to come pick us up (just the two of us). When that one arrived 10 minutes later, the driver said he was taking us to a depot and that we would not be doing the tour with Native's way, but Jaguere Tours. We felt like we had been tricked and were not too confident about how the rest of our day would go.

The boat trip portion of the excursion was not what I expected and certainly not as depicted. We never got more than half a mile up river. That said, our guide, our boat driver and our bus driver were excellent. They located all the species we anticipated seeing and made sure that everyone on the boat had opportunities to get good pictures, turning the boat if need be. We even got to watch a man casting net to catch shrimp for fishing bait. Earlier Mike stopped the bus so we could get out and get photos or a group of Howler Monkeys he spotted while driving. Andre was very knowledgeable, explaining the various habitat features and behaviors of the wildlife relative to the seasons, and all manner of historical and current cultural information about Costa Rica. That included an explanation of collecting sand from the bottom of the river with oxen. The stop for lunch was a treat of Costa Rican food. Presentations on pottery making and sugar cane processing at the farm were excellent. A good day in the end.

We took this boat trip to see more of nature in Costa Rica. The guide was very knowledgeable and explained things on our drive to the boat, on the boat, and during our return. He supplemented his descriptions with reference books he had brought along on the boat tour. He and the boat captain worked in tandem to locate animals for us to view and photograph. A really good time.

Our guide Athiel was very informative and spoke great English. He and the boat driver went out of the way to find birds, monkeys etc. on the shore. Athiel had a bird book and showed us the birds we asked about. He also stopped to knock on a tree looking for Mccaws, and answered all our questions. It was a good tour, but Athiel made it great!

If you have an interest in nature while in Tamarindo consider a two-hour small boat tour on the estuary with Natives Way . Onboard Captain Ivan pointed out several species of birds, iguanas, a few small crocodiles, and some howler monkeys. This is an easy and inexpensive way to view a little wildlife. This is a laid back trip worth a couple of hours when in the area

We met up with Hugo for our River Boat Cruise tour and from the first moment to the last he showed us Costa Rica. He was very knowledgeable and answered all our questions. I especially like the small tour we were on because it enabled him to answer all our questions. The Monkeys were our favorite the would come right out of the tall trees and you could really see them and take picutres well. Thanks for a great time! Miquel our boat driver and guide was awesome also! He knew right where to go to give us the chance to see the wildlife.

Our tour started off on a sour note, but Valerie more than made up for it. Our hotel pickup was 30 min late, and it was just a taxi who was picking us up - no markings on the car or anything. We weren't even sure we were getting in the right vehicle or knew where we were going. A little communication up front explaining pickup process, including having to change vehicles, would have cleared up all this confusion. Once we met up with the rest of our group, we were on our way. Valerie had an incredible amount of knowledge and an obvious enthusiasm for wildlife and conservation. She shared information about the landscape and country history as we were driving to Palo Verde National Park. Once on our boat she pointed out numerous wildlife (and we saw a LOT) and even had field guides for us to look at. We were fortunate to see a lot of wildlife on the tour and our boat driver made sure we were able to get close to view and plenty of time to enjoy. Lunch was family style and good - a typical Costa Rican casado.
