Itinerary
- 1Hotel Pick up You will be picked up from your hotel journey one hour through the back roads of Guanacaste’s Sabanero (Cowboy Country) Province to Palo Verde National Park. 2 Hour Boat Safari on Tempisque River After a scenic guided drive, you will then hope into your boat and spend 2 hours on the Tempique River that borders the Palo Verde National Park, best known for its murky water and spectacular wetlands. Your naturalist guide will help to spot wildlife in the dry forest vegetation and mangroves. There are over 600 different species of birds, both local and migratory. Appropriately, this tour is a real treat for bird watchers, as you’ll have the chance of spotting a wide range of fowl that includes storks, egrets, spoonbills, grebes and more. Also be on the lookout for monkeys, iguanas, scarlet macaws, anteaters, crocodiles and caimans, which can often be seen lingering along the banks of the river. Costa Rica Style Lunch After your boat safari, you will be taken to eat a plentiful Costa Rican style meal called a Casado with rice, beans, salad, plantains, choice of meat, and more. Dietary restrictions can be accommodated. Guaitil Pottery Village Before heading back, we will visit the Guaitil Pottery village that is famous throughout Costa Rica and the rest of Central America for its pre-Columbian Chorotega style. They will show you how they make the pottery and there is an opportunity to buy some if you like!Pass byPlaya ConchalTamarindoPlaya GrandePlaya FlamingoPinillaPlayas del CocoPlaya HermosaPlaya PanamaCulebra

- 271elissab0 contributions10/10 Experience!Must do excursion! We went during the off season which was perfect because we got a small group. Every single activity was so much fun. I did zip lining 6 months ago in Hawaii, but this course was even prettier. We truly enjoyed everything that we did while we were at the Hacienda. We paid extra for pickup at the Andaz but it was totally worth it! Pickup was right on time. Private shuttle to the meetup point where you can buy souvenirs, food, use the bathroom; then, you take a longer bus ride to the Hacienda. All of the guides and employees were extremely helpful and kind. We enjoyed our conversations with everyone that we met. Every time we got stuck on a rock while rafting (which was a lot), someone helped us to get back on course. Also, the lunch buffet was great! Definitely the best food I’ve ever been provided at an excursion.Written October 5, 2024
- 493mckenzym0 contributionsDefinitely worth it!Would definitely recommend this tour, Diego was great and made sure we saw so many different things, and saw so many different types of wildlife! The rainforest was stunning and the waterfall was beautiful! Highly recommend!Written October 2, 2024
- jtplatt0 contributionsOne of Our FavoritesThis boat safari was awesome! Our tour guide Iban was extremely knowledgeable and helped us to see lots of different wildlife. He even took us off the boat on a short hike to see some howler monkeys, which was easily the best part of the tour. He also gave out water bottles and fresh cut pineapple on the way back to the dock!Written September 30, 2024
- jtplatt0 contributionsFun but Not the Activity for UsThis activity could definitely be fun for the right couple, but neither of us had ridden horses for several years and while they were very well behaved, we found them uncomfortable to ride. It was great to be able to stop at Conchal Beach, but we were only there for a few minutes. We didn't really get to ride on the beach because of the hide tide and rough water. While our guide was helpful with the horses and showing the way, he was often far ahead and didn't tell us much about the areas we rode through.Written September 30, 2024
- cindysX6366HZ0 contributionsAmazing guide - wonderful experience!Alejandro was charming, entertaining and very knowledgable. We laughed all the way. The hike up to the waterfall was amazing and so worthwhile. Then we had a delicious lunch after which we saw sloths, lots of monkeys and dart frogs. The coffee and cocoa tour was so informative and tasty! Then we laughed all the way back. This experience with Alejandro as our guide was the highlight of our trip to Costa Rica!Written September 29, 2024
- fanjiet0 contributionsYes!Such a fun solo or family experience. There was a family in my group and everyone was so great with their kids, from the tubing to the zip lining. Tour guide Kevin was super knowledgeable and you can tell his passion for nature as he gave sooo much information about the area/ history. 10/10 recommend.Written September 29, 2024
- 380alleng0 contributionsSuper fun and very knowledgeableWe had a great tour with ALEJANDRO at the Rincon de la Vieja Volcano Tour. We had so much fun learning so much about all useful purposes the different trees have, and about the different animals and their functions. Because of ALEJANDRO I now appreciate nature and animals much more. ALEJANDRO also explained how volcanos were formed and showed pictures that helped us understand better volcanic formations and how Costa Rica is utilizing them for renewable energy. This increased my interest in learning more about Volcano's. This was a great tour! The hot springs were also great. The best one was the 103 F hot spring. So hot!. The waterfall was very refreshing. I am looking forward for another tour with ALEJANDRO the next time I come to Costa Rica.Written September 23, 2024
- Joojooyah0 contributionsWas able to stand up after second try!My friend and I visited Tamarindo during rainy season and it was really nice to be able to book a surfing lesson day of. It was easy to contact Native's Way Tamarindo through their WhatsApp. We arrived and were greeted by our instructor Ronaldo. They have lockers, a shower, and a separate bathroom on site. Ronaldo gave us clear instructions and had us practice on shore first. It was just the two of us in class and he was so patient with both and would be with one of us one at a time. I was surprised how quickly I was able to hear Ronaldo call out when to paddle, stand up on the board, and just go with the waves. I was able to stand up on the board on my second try! It was such an exhilarating experience and I hope to take surf lessons again!Written September 20, 2024
- Charlee A0 contributionsAn International crazy good time!Make sure you bring your bravest pair of shoes!! This experience gives you just the right amount of danger, where you feel the fear pulsating in your ankles, but the beautiful scenery will motivate you to press on. You will not regret the zipline or tubing at all.Written September 18, 2024
- Q1639MRheidig0 contributionsWorth the long day to see Nicaragua!I was worried about such a long tour day with so much time in the van, but it was worth it to see beautiful Nicaragua! We were escorted through the boarder and always felt safe with our guide. We got to see so much more than I expected - not just a hop across the border for a passport stamp. The boat tour and views of lake Nicaragua were stunning, as were views from Mirador de Caterina and the walk up to Cristo de la Misericordia. Grenada and the chocolate factory was a little underwhelming in comparison and would have loved to tour the volcano instead (which was closed for safety reasons), but we were able to buy some coffee souvenirs there. The WiFi in the van on Costa Rica side was great but we switched to a different van on the Nicaragua side which didn’t have WiFi and password posted. The van wasn’t overcrowded, but seats did become uncomfortable for such a long day of sitting.Written September 15, 2024

- nikolew6690 contributionsWonderful experience!I had a fantastic day on this excursion! Everything was well-organized and clearly communicated. Tubing was my favorite part! It was so enjoyable to spend the day surrounded by beautiful nature, with the river and waterfalls. Make sure to bring dry clothes and a swimsuit. My only minor complaint is that it can be a bit inconvenient to switch between dry clothes and a swimsuit multiple times during the trip, although they do provide a nice changing room. All of the staff were incredibly kind and attentive. Overall, I had a wonderful time!Written September 2, 2024

Similar experience to others regarding pick up: We were told to be ready for pick up at Riu Palace before 7 a.m. and we were. At 7:10 we were still waiting, a Native's Way bus pulled in but it was not for our tour. The guide on that tour contacted the office and arranged for another van to come pick us up (just the two of us). When that one arrived 10 minutes later, the driver said he was taking us to a depot and that we would not be doing the tour with Native's way, but Jaguere Tours. We felt like we had been tricked and were not too confident about how the rest of our day would go.
The boat trip portion of the excursion was not what I expected and certainly not as depicted. We never got more than half a mile up river. That said, our guide, our boat driver and our bus driver were excellent. They located all the species we anticipated seeing and made sure that everyone on the boat had opportunities to get good pictures, turning the boat if need be. We even got to watch a man casting net to catch shrimp for fishing bait. Earlier Mike stopped the bus so we could get out and get photos or a group of Howler Monkeys he spotted while driving. Andre was very knowledgeable, explaining the various habitat features and behaviors of the wildlife relative to the seasons, and all manner of historical and current cultural information about Costa Rica. That included an explanation of collecting sand from the bottom of the river with oxen. The stop for lunch was a treat of Costa Rican food. Presentations on pottery making and sugar cane processing at the farm were excellent. A good day in the end.

This boat safari was the perfect way to see the Costa Rican wildlife up close and personal! Ariel was a great tour guide! He and our boat driver were excellent at spotting animals along the riverbanks and getting us as close as possible. There were crocodiles swimming right alongside the boat. The best part was the monkeys! We parked the boat right next to their tree and the monkeys were literally climbing on our boat. Our kids were able to take selfies with the monkeys and we absolutely loved it! As hot as it can be in Costa Rica, the ride was very comfortable under the roof of the boat. I would highly recommend splurging for the private tour if you can. That allowed our kids to have a chance to drive the boat, the ability to move around to get the best views of the wildlife and all the time they wanted to interact with the monkeys. A great half-day excursion!

We met up with Hugo for our River Boat Cruise tour and from the first moment to the last he showed us Costa Rica. He was very knowledgeable and answered all our questions. I especially like the small tour we were on because it enabled him to answer all our questions. The Monkeys were our favorite the would come right out of the tall trees and you could really see them and take picutres well. Thanks for a great time! Miquel our boat driver and guide was awesome also! He knew right where to go to give us the chance to see the wildlife.

We booked our tour direct with Native’s Way in Tamarindo and we’re delighted with their service and price.
We were picked up on time and met the tour guide,Santos and driver William. William proved to be a safe and highly competent driver as he negotiated the roads and tracks to and from the NP.
Santos pointed out things of interest as we made our way to the NP and as we entered the park he went full “Dr Dolittle” as he summoned the howler monkeys into view by mimicking their sounds, this allowed for great photo ops. Once we boarded the boat and set off Santos again came into his own as he highlighted the abundance of wildlife.Crocs, iguanas, various members of the heron family, capuchin monkeys, egrets, kingfishers and storks. He also pointed out the local flora. More great photo ops.
Lunch was a traditional dish of chicken, blackbean, rice with salad followed by freshly brewed coffee. All good. It was then a pottery making demo by a local potter,7th generation of his craft who explained how pottery was made back in the day by the indigenous people of the area.
It was then back to our pick-up points,a very enjoyable 1/2 day tour.

We were staying in Playa Grande for a week and four (adults) of us took this tour. We loved being picked up by Juan Carlos at our Airbnb and driven to the start of the boat ride. He rode with us on our nearly two hour boat ride along with the naturalist guide. The guide pointed out crocodiles (several) and a large variety of birds and other wildlife including white faced monkeys. It was very enjoyable. Afterwards we stopped for a delicious lunch at an outdoor restaurant in a nearby town where we also saw a demo of pottery making by Willie before being driven home. We had a rental car but we were more than happy to leave the driving to someone else!

My partner and I thoroughly enjoyed the Palo Verde excursion. The guide, Alejandro, was so knowledgable and the boat driver knew exactly hoe to spot wildlife without disturbing them. Lunch at Ranchero Los Coyotes was good, and I loved the visit to Guaitil to see the indigenous pottery. I recommend this tour to anyone who wants to see the natural beauty of Costa Rica.

The shuttle to pick us up was right on time, the guide, shuttle driver and boat captain were all professional and very informative. We stopped several times on the dive to see wildlife that they spotted as we drove: this seemed a bonus. The lunch was very nice, served family style. And we also had a demonstration from a local potter / craftsman who explained the traditional materials and methods as he was creating a pot. It made for a very nice half-day from Tamarindo, with time to enjoy the beach in the afternoon.

What an amazing experience! We booked direct through Palo Verde Boat Tours and it was $55 USD per person with $11 pp for the lunch which was absolutely delicious! Every individual we encountered for this tour was delightful, kind and helpful. We were staying in Playa del Coco so it took us about an hour to get there and most of the road off of 21 was a bit rough but the scenery was beautiful from the many sugar cane fields, cantelope, just true life in Costa Rica. Incredible on the boat to see crocodiles swim literally alongside the boat (and a bit scary), howler monkeys in the trees, iguanas the size of yard stick - truly an amazing experience. Book direct with them for the best price!

My husband and I had a wonderful time with our guides on the bus, boat ride, lunch and return. This was an excellent 1/2 day trip! We signed up for the 9 o’clock boat and were picked up at our hotel in playa flamingo at 7am We connected with our tour bus 20 min away in Huaca where we met our lovely fellow travelers and guide. The drive was beautiful and so interesting - rural and authentic with sugar cane farms, cattle, horses, goats and 100+ year old houses along the way. We had one stop for a bathroom break at a country way station and and continued on dirt roads for the remainder of the ride. It made for an exciting ride for those in the back seat. (We all took turns with that seat!) The guide saw a family of howler monkeys in the trees ahead and we pulled over and climbed out to watch a mother and father with babies clinging to their backs climbing and swinging through the branches! Amazing! When we got to the river it was an easy and quick transfer to the boat and we immediately began seeing incredible species of birds, golden iguanas, crocs and white faced howlers! The guide and captain were excellent at finding the animals and took time to bring the boat close and share information about them all. The lunch was delicious served at a country road side restaurant connected to a traditional pottery - I had hoped to see more of the pottery but the demonstration was marvelous and what we saw we loved.
It was an amazing trip and we were back in playa flamingo with time to take a rest and then go to the beach for a late afternoon swim and dinner. Pura Vida!!! Thanks !!

On the whole this was a very enjoyable experience. It was interesting to watch the oxen pull loads of sand from the river uphill to the waiting trucks. The boat ride was educational, crocs were thrilling, monkeys cute and amusing, birds plentiful and the captain and guide attentive, helpful and informative. Lunch was fresh and the service was very good.
The only negative comment I could make is the road is rough in many places and the van could use new shocks and better air conditioning.
We were four and all of us thought it to be well worth our time and money.
