- javanorth100Clean safe travel with AlexWe have used Alex for several years. We use his services for airport transfer and adventure trips. His vans and cars are clean, safe and newer models, He is always early for pick up and flexible on times. He specializes in personalized adventures. Alex possesses a vast knowledge of his country. His casual conversation of the areas we drive through are fun and educational. We have learned a lot about the history, plants and animals of Costa Rica. The guy seems to have a talent for finding wildlife. We have had other members of his team drive us. Geno is a great associate. He also is a worthwhile guide and can spot animals in the cover of the trees. We have ridden with him so often he has brought his wife and son on occasion. Great people. I highly recommend you give them a try when you go to Costa Rica.
- cclaverie00Disappearing act AlexDisappearing act Alex is what I call him... referred us to coco bay tours for atv which false advertised the whole tour from seeing a waterfall, to scuba diving... once we returned and complained Alex decided to play where's Alex and sided with the locals on how they handled our false advertised tour... not to mention I could have jogged as fast as the tour traveled it was the worst... thanks for nothing Alex..
- G8715GUjenniferg00Scam!!!!!!This tour is a complete scam!!! Alex made promise after promise that we would see and get to swim in a waterfall!!! Even reminded us several times, to bring swim gear for the waterfall. We never even saw a waterfall, didn’t know the waterfall was “dried up “, until after the tour was over. Initially Alex answered then, stopped answering calls! Our group of 12, was never reimbursed for the inconvenience! Would not recommend!!!!
- 845janayc00What's a waterfall tour with no waterfall?Alex is simply the middle man between you & actual tour operators on site. I booked ATV waterfall with him for myself & 12 of my family members. We were supposed to have an ATV tour w/ waterfall. There was no attempt to visit a waterfall. When i asked the tour guides about the waterfall, he said that Alex lied to us. And that Alex knew that the waterfall had run dry. Alex refused to take my calls or do anything to try to rectify the situation. We spend $2000 USD with Alex and my group was very disappointed. I am a travel agent and i will NEVER book any of my clients for any of Alex's tours. Trash equipment booked through Coco Bay tours. ATVs kept stalling out. False advertising & very arrogant owners.
- nrmayfield100Absolutely amazing, Walter is a must have your guideGreat trip!! This excursion has everything you’re looking for… all in a 1 day event. Zip lining, horseback riding, and hot springs. We started our day early where we were met by Walter (our tour guide). We took an hour and a half drive to our destination. We started with the zip line, beginning with some breath taking views. Following this, we took on some horse riding. Led by Walter, we had moments to look at the scenery and animals. We had some opportunities to interact with local families with authentic Costa Rican food. To cap off the day, we had a steam and spa exfoliation with mud and springs. Throughout the entire day Walter was an incredible asset to our group. Provide an enormous amount of information about the trip, locals, wild-life, and amazing entertainment. If you can request a tour guide, we highly recommend Walter. This was our first time in Costa Rica and our first excursion. Walter ensured an amazing experience for us on our honeymoon. We are very thankful.
- A4684MJyolandam00Girls trip/ Rafting and ZipliningI went on a girls trip to Costa Rica for a friends 40th bday. We didn't see an excursion that had what we wanted to do which was zipline and water raft only so we messaged and they made it happen! Pablo was fantastic. So patient with all of us and really made us feel so safe. The white water rafting was fun, the guide Luis was hilarious. Half way through we went to a little waterfall and got to jump in the water there. We saw a few white face monkeys on the route and after had a delicious lunch. We then headed to the ziplining. We had 8 lines to do and we were in and out of there in no time. Next time we will book our hotel transportation through them too instead of through the hotel.
- Cgrammer92300Amazing day of fun! What a great day we had. Rosbin picked us up at the hotel and to our surprise told us that this was a private tour. He educated us during the drive on different things we were driving by and kept us laughing with jokes. He gave us the best order to do the combo in and helped get us moved through quickly so that we were waiting on the large bussed in groups. He has a great eye and pointed out tons of animals in the trees as we walked. He took pictures of us along the way and ensured we had a great day. I would definitely recommend Alex on the Beach for your tours! We will be using them again on our next trip here.
- Jonathan S00Solid tourIf you are in contact with Rosbin from sevensensecostarica he also works with Sergio for this mega tour and their other tours. If you don't want to drive all the way to liberia where Sergio is located Rosbin would be more than happy to guide you on the tour. He's located in playa de coco. Rosbin was a great tour guide took photos for us and really was knowledgeable of the area and everything we toured.
- Departure72833500Great Experience in Costa RicaWe did 2 tours with Alex on the Beach. We travelled as a couple on our own with our Guide which was Pablo Campos on both occasions. He was friendly, knowledgeable and fun to be with and introduced us to some traditional Costa Rican foods. The first tour was the all day Wildlife Tour with Pablo and David. We saw a baby sloth at very close range which was brilliant, a tapir, monkeys, frogs, birds, snakes. A brilliant experience followed by lunch and a boat trip down the Tenorio/Corobici Rivers topped off by a swim in the Llanos de Cortez waterfall. Unforgetable day. Our 2nd trip was to the Hanging Bridges in Heliconias. No wildlife but still memorable especially for me as I am not normally that good with heights. This was followed by ATVs which was a bit of fun. All in all , I would thoroughly recommend Alex on the Beach as a Tour Guide company and also Pablo as a guide, who was brilliant
- Wine-travl-luvr00Good, Caring Company but make sure you are very clear on what you will be doingAotB conducted two tours for us: 4 of us on the Mega Combo tour 6 of us on a 2 hour ATV tour We are 3 couple from the US, aged 65-75, active but not athletic. We visited Costa Rica and we selected tours intended to both entertain us and let us see a little of Costa Rica and experience it's natural beauty and culture. We arranged our tours with Sergio via email and made deposits via Pay Pal. He was wonderful answering our questions, and it was easy to reach him and get our tours booked. Our guide Pablo on the Mega Combo tour was excellent, we could not have been in better hands. He was a pleasure to spend a day with, and went above and beyond in making sure that we were safe, comfortable and did everything we set out to do. I cannot speak highly enough of him or the tour itself which I will review under Buena Vista. For the ATV tour, we booked a 2 hour Beach tour as described on the Alex otB website. We were excited about visiting 5 beaches, and also we were told we would start and end at their restaurant the Monkey Bar. I'm not sure what happened, but we had an ATV tour that went by dirt road through the jungle areas to one beach, Playa Zapotal, and then back to the starting point in Nuevo Colon. We were allowed about 20 minutes to swim and enjoy the beach which had a lovely view of some rock formations off shore, but it was not a beach that enticed any of us to swim. We are disappointed that we neither had an opportunity to go to the Monkey Bar or to see the 5 beaches which were of more interest to us than the land areas we rode through. It was however a fun day, and our guide Randall and his assistant were excellent about making sure we knew how to properly use the ATVs, were safe at all times and especially when in an area with other traffic, and pointed out some monkeys along the way. I would book with this company again if in the area, however I think I would ask for very firm detailed explanation about what I was going to see and do on the ATV ride or any tour that did not have a specific place to go (such as the Mega Combo tour which was going to a specific eco park).
- APNPTraveler00BewareResponse via e-mail very prompt when wanting to book . Recently had to cancel upcoming trip to Costa Rica for family illness. Trying to get excursion deposit refund not as prompt. Have to wait until the end of the month of the planned excursion. Hope we see refund at all. Beware of this
- Subhasrc00Very ProfessionalWe did the Buena Park Adventure Combo. Our guide Pablo was so professional and accommodating. He picked us up on time and made sure we accomplished everything there was to do at the park including zip lining, hot springs, horseback riding and water sliding. We even had plenty of vegetarian food for my parents. It was a jam packed day but we had so much fun. I would 100% recommend Alex on the Beach for their professionalism.
- robertianrae00Excellent Tours! We were staying at the nearby Riu Palace, so walked down to the Monkey Bar and booked two tours with Alex, who was extremely helpful. The first was a river boat trip on the Tempisque River Palo Verde National Park. The amount of wildlife was amazing, and the boat crew extremely knowledgeable. During the two-hour trip we saw crocodiles, iguanas, monkeys, numerous birds, including herons, great egrets, and others that I couldn’t identify. After an excellent lunch, our brilliant driver, Favio, then took us north to a forest where we saw sloths, snakes, frogs, different varieties of banana plant, etc., again with a very knowledgeable guide. Following the tour, Favio dropped us off right at the hotel. The second tour that we booked was a sunset cruise. We didn’t particularly want to go on a sunset “party” booze cruise, so opted for a private boat tour. We were taken out by Carlos, and his brother, Moses. We saw dolphins, flying fish, coatis, the Monkey Face Island, a sea tunnel, and they stopped for my wife to do a bit of snorkelling. Carlos and Moses also helped me to catch my first ever Tuna! At sunset, the views were spectacular. Favio, Carlos and Moses were great guides. We will be booking with Alex on our return next year. Recommended.
- leahp58900Amazing!!!!I cannot recommend this group enough! We did 3 excursions over 3 days and they were amazing!! Sergio communicated extremely well with me. The tour guides were prompt, friendly, knowledgeable, and a lot of fun! These excursions made our trip so memorable.
- L7244AZkathleenf00So much of Costa Rica in one dayThe wildlife safari tour was fabulous. We felt safe in Pablo's care as he took us from the gate of our hotel to local shops, a river tour chock full of crocodiles, iguanas monkeys and birds, to a gorgeous waterfall, and finally to a preserve where we saw sloths, frogs and snakes. Pablo heard my daughter say how much she likes horchata and stopped at a little place with a similar delightful beverage. Would highly recommend and hope to do the trip again some day!

We were staying at the RIU Palace and after reading rhe reviews on Trip Advisor , we booked a trip to Palo Verde with Alex on the Beach. Firstly , we were given two different prices from 2 guys working for Alex so be careful what you pay. There was a difference of $35 between the two. Secondly , we were not taken to the Palo Verde National Park! Instead we were taken to a second rate boat tour on a river they said was "beside" the National Park. Out in the middle of nowhere , who knows where we were. There were extras included but they didn't make up for not going to the REAL Palo Verde.

Sorry for the inconvenience guys but you was in Palo Verde National Park , if you do not busy your expectations with the tour I apologize again because you have to understand that nature is not always plentiful and the person believe that all days are equal .

Just back from wonderful "girlfriend" vacation at Secrets Papagayo in Costa Rica. Met Carlos with Alex on the Beach and set up two trips. River rafting/sloth reserve and then day of horseback riding, hiking, and volcanic baths. Both trips were over-the-top! We saw lots of animals, had delicious food, great information from the best tour guide - Juan Pablo Gutierrez Durante, "Pablo" and learned and saw a lot. Our horses were great quality and everything was run perfectly. I highly recommend Alex on the Beach and touring with Pablo is a must!

We went to Costa Rica for our honeymoon last week and contacted Alex via email beforehand to set up some tours. We told him what we were interested in and he set up 3 different day trips for us. The first tour was with Jonathon and we went to a beautiful waterfall then went rafting. We also went to a nature preserve and held a sloth. It was fantastic and Jonathon was a great tour guide. The second tour was with Norman. He was hilarious and taught us so much about Costa Rica and its history. We rode horses up the volcano, hiked to a waterfall, then went to the hot springs and mud baths. It was such a great day. Our last tour was a snorkeling trip where Bruno picked us up in his boat right at the beach at our hotel. He took us along the shore to a beautiful snorkeling spot where we saw tons of fish. He dove down to the bottom and found an octopus and my husband got to hold it--it was so cool! On the way back, we had dolphins come right up to the boat and my husband reeled in two large fish. It was amazing. I would recommend all of these guides if you can get them, and definitely recommend Alex for tours in Costa Rica. We can't decide what we liked best because everything was so much fun.

We booked two excursions with Sergio from Alex on the Beach and both excursion were fantastic. I did a separate review on each of them. We purchased a private ATV and Congo Trail Canopy Tour and the Palo Verde National Park River Boat Excursion.
The ATV and Congo Trail Canopy tour with John was awesome. He was friendly and very knowledgable. He loves his country and it comes through while on the excursion. When we left the Congo Trail we visited two beaches (Penca Beach - white sand and Potreros Bay - dark sand), a bar (Las Brisas Bar), and a mountain top (Pacific heights) before returning to the resort.
The River Boat tour was exciting and fun as well. Pablo our tour guide made sure we had a great time. We saw a variety of animals while on the river. Our tour also included a Costa Rican lunch, coffee shop tour, and stop by Coco Beach.
Now for the deal breaker! Before arriving in Costa Rica we arranged for round trip transfer to and from the airport with Sergio. The pick up was great. We had someone waiting for us with a sign with our name and felt like super stars. Our driver made us feel welcomed to Costa Rica. On the way to the resort we were giving a history lesson and an overview of how things functioned.
Sunday arrived and our departure flight was a 6:50 AM flight so we had a 4:00 AM pick-up. I confirmed with Sergio on Friday and Saturday. Sunday we waited outside the resort lobby and even arrived early since we were nervous. We called Sergio around 4:20 AM and left a message but there was no answer. Lucky for my wife and I a family from Maryland who had arranged for a private pick up from another company allowed us to catch a ride with them to the airport. Based on this if you have an early flight do not use Alex on the Beach. I wanted to give them a 5 but due to the fact we cold have been stranded in Costa Rica I have to give a poor rating.
If you have any questions please to not hesitate to ask.

I am not writing this review to seek revenge but more to tell everyone of Our experience and what effect it had on My Family. When we were approached from one of the typical salespeople you run into at a resort Athens #1 draw to this company was of Course the Trip Advisor badge. We attempted to make a reservation but it was late in the day So we attempted it early in the morning but the time was also to late. So in the afternoon of the same day we made a reservation for the following day and in text confirmation I asked to confirm the pricing and any exceptions. I received back a text confirmation of $100 per adult and children from the edge of 12 or more were charged as adults. I confirmed back that there would be 3 adults and my daughter if 11 years old so I confirmed the amount of $300. Now, in fairness I didn’t not receive a confirmation of my math but clearly it was spelled out in black & white. The family was excited to be going out for the trip. Pickup was at 7:30 am They arrived promptly and we were loaded into their vehicle. At the time I wondered when they would ask for payment as once we leave the Hotel their is no signal until we come back into an area of WiFi. We enjoyed a conversation as we drove the 20 minutes out to the main highway. That is when the question came up, How would you like to pay for this Trip?
I offered my credit card, and at that time I was told “We prefer cash” I asked why they did not mention this while we were at the hotel where I would have been able to accommodate them but I would check to see how much I have. Lucky for all of us, I had $340, so I offered the $300 that I had confirmed and was asked “Hiw much is this?” I said it is the $300 I was told. 3 adults $100 and children 12 or more also $100 but my daughter is only 11.
No, it is $400. I said that I have a text from Alex that it is $300. No, it doesn’t say children are free!!! Well from there it went straight down hill. I tried to show the guide the text and he wasn’t interested. He wasn’t interested in anything I had to say. I asked him why he waited until we were 20 minutes from the hotel to ask me for payment, especially if he wanted to be paid in cash. He had no response.
I felt this was a bad situation only getting worse so I made the decision to return to the hotel and not take any chances. There wasn’t any conversation on the 20 minute drive back. Of course now, I am the one in the dog house!
My daughter took to the Internet and is very bright. She went to Trip Advisor and read all the bad reviews instead of the good ones. As it is written, their are many others who have had similar experiences. I am asking you to do yourself a favor and read the bad reviews first in the future and decide how bad they are. If I would have done that I would have never made a reservation with this company and I think trip advisor should reconsider a membership based the bad reviews va the good ones.

Good morning Mr.Roberto is a pleasure to greet you at the same time I also want to express and respond to you and all our trip advisor subscribers who read this comment that everything you mention is not a pity that I can not attach evidence through this platform and can show it:
1) You contacted us by phone on Saturday, July 13 and also by email that first day that called 8:30 a.m. was told it was too late to do the tour you are talking about, we proposed that it was better that I did another day with more time to which you said that you would think and that anything would contact us later .
2) That same day Saturday contact us again at 11:35 am and tell us what you want to do the tour of Palo Verde National Park on Sunday, we agreed to confirm your tour and you were told that the adults would pay $100 pp and the 11-year-old girl paid as an adult because that is what we have established in our company as a policy and many others in this tourism industry also charge as children adults 11 years and older when you told me your age by means of messages I clarified it well and even wrote to you by text message, he created that it could not be clearer and you agreed to take the tour .
3) On Sunday when we arrived for you to pick you up at the hotel lobby everything was fine until after traveling about 20 minutes in the bus the subject of charge for the tour because in fact we even trust you to pay all the money on the day of the tour before traveling and you refused to pay for the girl and still wanted to charge you with a child rate to help you even more and especially because We were already on the road and you said that we went back to the hotel which was not so much to waste our time, money and lack of seriousness in our deal that we had already agreed .
4) I recognize that part of the error was not Berle charged at the time of collection because if we had known that this was going to happen we did not leave the hotel and right there he would have canceled the tour but because he was confident he taught us one more lesson in life .
5) You after all that he went back to the hotel to speak badly of our company and even spoke with our sales representatives on the beach of the hotel andaz and told him that if we gave up the guide that charged him and that according to him he made a bad gesture to which we agreed to calm your anger and that conditioned us that if we did not write any bad comments on trip advisor, we sent him an email again showing him a photo of the guide and apologizing almost on his knees and in the end he always wrote the bad comment .
6) Many times clients believe that because we are local tour operators they can intimidate us with their comments and tantrums so that we have to accede to their pretensions and that's not the way things are because we are no less than the big agencies recognized in Costa Rica because equally we are better than them and I dare say it because the comments speak for themselves .
7) With all your respect I have the right to the answer to y
our comment and he said with all your heart that the next time I hired tourist services or any other service is more serious with people when doing business because you are the people who want to take advantage of others because you did not want to pay for 4 people only $ 300 for a tour of the most desired by tourists when they visit the province of Guanacaste and see us chalking to say goodbye to a person who today has no work as long as you did not write a bad comment to which always did . I leave in your consciousness all that happened and I apologize if we do not meet your expectations. Thanks

The highlights of our week at the Riu Guanacaste were all connected with Alex on the Beach. Excursion #1: It meant a LOT to me, constricted by a disability, to be able to go on an excursion in activity-rich Costa Rica. Alex had quickly and enthusiastically responded to my emails about whether I'd be able to handle the walking and whether they could take my mobility scooter. My husband and I went on the Palo Verde National Park tour. A-MAZ-ING. Rolando is honestly the best tour guide we have ever had in our travels on five continents. Warm, helpful, knowledgeable, smart. We can't recommend him highly enough! Our boat ride in the Tempisque River allowed us to interact with white-faced monkeys in the wild, see huge iguanas and crocodiles up close, and spot the only pink bird in Costa Rica, the Roseate Spoonbill. After that, our group enjoyed a typical and delicious Costa Rican lunch prepared by Alex's grandmother, and a demonstration of indigenous pottery at a small shop. We went to a coffee tasting, where they roasted the highest-quality beans while we waited and bought still-warm coffee to bring home. Then we had time in Coco Beach before being returned to the hotel. Excursion #2: Later in the week, my husband went on the Helconias Rain Forest excursion where they zip lined, hiked to a waterfall, went horseback riding, walked across a hanging bridge, saw bubbling volcanic mud, went in mud baths and hot spring-fed hot tubs. He was on the lookout for Costa Rica critters and was rewarded with seeing the long-tailed manakin and glass-winged butterflies. He was really hoping to see a sloth, macaws and parrots, but it didn't happen. Next time he'll go to the Arenal Volcano, where he runs a much better chance of seeing these animals. "Excursion" #3: Alex Solis also owns the Monkey Bar, which you can find by walking south (left) down the beach, or taking the road outside of the Riu property that runs parallel to the beach. The non-paved section was a "muy" bumpy ride on my scooter but I was able to get there! (Can't walk in sand.) Several people told us of seeing monkeys in nearby trees in the mornings and late afternoons, but we went there for lunch and didn't see any mid-day. We did, however, discover the best food of our entire week. While my husband went off on his excursion, I went back on my own for a second lunch "experience." We were greeted with the most amazing, memorable welcome ever. My new BFF Fernando brought a bowl of ice water graced with citrus slices and flowers for our hands and arms, which cooled us off immediately. He wrung out a clean cloth in the ice water and placed it on our necks. Wow. Just wow. You can book your excursions at the Monkey Bar as well as on the beach. At the end of our vacation, as we compared notes, all the high points of our week were connected with Alex on the Beach's excursions and Monkey Bar. Next time we go, we'll arrange to have him provide our shuttle from the airport and back as well. (Google "alex on the beach costa rica." Or "amazing tours costa rica." Same great company.)

We spent a full day as a family with Alex. We wanted to pack in a full day of seeing the local wildlife, geography and culture. Alex did not disappoint. From the off he was showing us cashew nuts, monkey brushes and elephant ear trees (you can find out the details when you visit). My son advised him he wanted to see a sloth, a toucan and monkey's on the trip. Well Alex ensured we saw all of these and more. Alex and Felix our driver have amazing eyesight and spotted things as were driving along and quickly pulled over to ensure we didn't miss them. We saw so many species of birds and lizards on the river safari not to mention crocodiles. We had a lovely typical Costa Rican meal in a small restaurant. Lovely plentiful food and the restaurant was spotlessly clean. We also tried the local green sauce and tamarind juice. We were then off to visit the rainforest where we saw, tree frogs, poison dart frogs and the gorgeous sloths. Alex told us all about the termites and how you could survive on them (again you can find the details when you visit) We also visited the hot springs where we covered ourselves in mud before soaking in the hot spring baths. There was so much packed into the day it gave us a real taste of Costa Rica. We asked Alex if there was a rodeo on locally and he arranged for our driver Felix to take us on another evening. This was another insight into the local way of life and was extremely enjoyable. I would highly recommend Alex and his tours. So much more personal than sitting on a big coach sticking to a strict timescale. We were able to take our time enjoying our trip with Alex imparting all his knowledge about his country and its economy, geology, wildlife and fauna. Thanks for a great trip Alex and the team.

I am so happy we chose Alex on the Beach for our trip to the Palo Verde National Park. We were picked up by Juan Carlos (JC) & his driver (sorry, I forgot his name). JC was so passionate about Costa Rica & making sure we had a great time. He was extremely knowledgeable & excited to share his country. The trip down the river was amazing. We saw crocs, monkeys, bats, & birds. We even stopped during the van ride to see some monkeys that they spotted. JC also let us use his binoculars & helped take pictures. After the river cruise we stopped at Los Ranchos Coyotes & ate lunch. The food & hospitality were amazing. We’ll definitely use Alex on the Beach whenever we return to Costa Rica!

My fiance and I just returned from a 2 and a half week vacation to Guanacaste in the Andaz Peninsula and had the time of our lives! Our good times were due, in no small part, to our tours and time spent with the guys from Alex on the Beach. When we arrived at the Nacazcolo beach house on our second day, we were approached by Celso and Ever to see if we had booked any tours/had any interest in tours, etc... and, since it seems like many of the tour companies in the area want to sell you something, we were a little skeptical. Also, I'm just going to say that I thought the company name seemed a bit silly so we took a brochure to look over and went back to our business of lounging on the beach. As I went through the brochure later, I saw that they had a couple of the same tours we were offered by our contact with Destination Services (we were hooked up with them via Costco Travel) and I flagged down Celso and asked for pricing. I was pleased/surprised that they offered better pricing for private versions of the same outings that Destination Services had offered us.
These are incredibly busy and hardworking guys, we discovered, as they are always working off of this beach or one of the nearby beaches so we had a few opportunities to speak with them and, after not getting any sort of contact from our Destination Services rep, started with a couple of small things like jet ski rentals with Celso and Ever and just enjoyed our interactions with them during our beach days. Even though we hadn't booked any big business with them at this point, they were always really pleased to see us and took time to make conversation with us without trying to sell us anything.
We decided to book the Palo Verde tour first as we were really hoping to see the river, maybe some crocodiles, etc... and we had a really excellent time. Our guide, Abraham, was a really great guy, first of all, and took the time to make a couple of stops along the way to our destination to show us some of the local spots and discuss the culture around the river and why the river was such an important part of life in the area. I'll mention that I started trying to learn Spanish (Costariccense) on this trip but had a very small vocabulary and all of the Alex on the Beach guys, including Abraham, had great English so we had no issues communicating. As Abraham shared information of the country, the region and the river we really enjoyed his obvious love of his home and his eagerness to share it with us uninformed foreigners.
The river trip itself was a lot of fun and we were able to see so many birds, monkeys (both white face and howler), crocodiles, iguanas, bats and just about everything you could hope for on this type of trip. The captain of the boat (also named Gabriel, Tocayo!) had serious eagle eyes and could spot anything and pull us right up to it for close observation as Abraham shared a lot of great facts on the location and all of the creatures we were fortunate enough to see. After we finished the tour, we went to a very local establishment called the Coyote Ranch and ate an authentic Costa Rican meal with very authentic Costa Ricans. We ate lunch with Abraham, which I was surprised to hear that not all tourists do because, really, they're missing out, and got to know him much better in the process. He showed us around the ranch and shared a lot of really interesting history with us on the antique tools used for processing sugar cane, making corn flour and many other things that I wouldn't have thought I'd have been interested in, at all, but really gave me a better appreciation for the local culture and history in this region. That entire trip was a great day all around and I really can't say enough about what a first rate guy Abraham is.
Our last tour on our vacation was a particularly enjoyable trip as we booked a beach tour and found out that we would be going with both Ever and Celso. We had been speaking with these guys pretty much every day and we both really enjoyed seeing and speaking with them any time we saw them so it was a nice surprise that they would be our guides. The tour to the beaches was great as we obviously got to see some beautiful sites at our stops as well as sea turtles in the act of mating - pretty awesome even though it felt like I was invading their privacy - before we went into Coco with these guys. We booked a 3 hour tour, mind you but we ended up spending about 6.5 hours with these guys and had a really excellent time. We ate and drank together, talked about life there, our lives here in the US, family, etc... it was like talking with old friends for hours and they showed us an excellent and truly memorable time while we were there. Ever even took us into a restaurant that doesn't have fried chicken on the menu and had them make it special for me as I really wanted to try Costa Rican fried chicken and Pro Tip: it's DELICIOUS. They can get you the local hook up is what I'm saying and that was also pretty cool. The locals were fun, friendly and really living Pura Vida which is something I appreciate all the more now that I've returned home to Denver. We will be staying in touch with these guys as they are now considered to be genuine friends and I look forward to seeing them again ASAP.
If you're a "TLDR" person, I'll sum it up: We did one tour with Destination Services and, while the guide and driver good guys and did a good job, it was nowhere near the engaging and intimate experience that we grew to expect with our reps from Alex on the Beach. They have great prices, they're a hell of a lot of fun to spend time with and, if you aren't careful, you'll end up making great friends when you don't expect it. Really, I lack the words to give them the credit they fully deserve for making our great trip to Costa Rica truly exceptional and one we will remember for the rest of our lives.
