We want to invite you to live a beautiful experience riding through the beautiful slopes of our farm where you can enjoy the beautiful natural landscape with the imposing view of the Arenal Volcano, during our tour you can experience and learn about Costa Rican equine culture, rural tourism and history since we are the pioneers of this activity more than 25 years ago when our founder Don Gerardo Chaves and another group of peasants decided to undertake the journey through the mountains until they reached the same place where he will be riding with us to relive this beautiful experience when visiting and discovering for the first time La Fortuna Waterfall where you can enjoy swimming in the natural pools of the waterfall. We are the only official operator of the Horseback Riding to La Fortuna Waterfall legally constituted, we have all the necessary permits, insurance as well as the rules established by the ICT (National Tourism Institute).

MOST STUNNING THING WE'VE EVER DONE
David & Mario were so amazing to us. They have so much love for their country and it should in everything we did. They made sure to point out everything for us, explain it, and give the background! We felt so incredible riding around the jungle. My husband has never ridden a horse before and they made him feel right at home. I love riding and they let me get a good little gallop in at the end for fun! All in all a great time, and would definitely do it again tomorrow if we had the time!

      Beautiful Ride to the Waterfalls
My family and I (son 11years, daughter 9yr) had an amazing ride to the Waterfalls and back with Eric. He is a real cowboy who lead us on an amazing adventure. The horses were very well trained and we felt very comfortable as beginners riding them.

      Unecessary and Dangerous
I've ridden dozens of horses and we've even owned some ourselves and would not in anyway recommend this tour. The horses are trained to do one thing, get to the waterfall as fast as possible. They were running over themselves trying to get to the front and the guide behind us was swinging his lasso trying to get them to go faster. They were barely responsive to the reigns. Pulling back made them go faster (maybe as though we were gathering the reigns?). Further attempts to slow the horses caused them to start rearing onto their back legs. No information was provided by the guide (other than the names of the horses including Loco and Muerte?). The last half of the ride is on the asphalt, which is very slick and runs next to a busy and well trafficked road. The horses knew to keep to the right, but would not slow down or stay together, even when going down hill. The guide's horse slipped and fell, the guide got back up but was heavily favoring one of his legs for the rest of the trip. Ultimately we got a taxi back to our hotel rather than continue the tour. There are safer, faster, and more humane ways to see the beautiful water fall. I would recommend any of those over this tour.

      We survived
Last minute change of plans since we didn’t want to do a night hike Ecoterra set us up here . Cool so we get there. Stable is muddy with three horses. We sign a waiver. We notice the last time someone had signed this waiver sheet was 6 months ago... we became weary. But hey pura vida. My GF and I WERE FIRST TIME RIDERS. Our horses looked tired, pissed, young and I’ve worked on a horse farm you can tell when they are tired. They were not very friendly either. They had individual missions. 3 horses Sevilla, desano and Loco. My GF of course was placed on Loco. I had desano and our trusty guide Sevilla. “Okay here’s your helmets hop up” cool we figured that out. No advice ect. We started. Loco starts galloping since they had other horses running in the field and so they got distracting signals in the open field , my GF is getting mad airtime up and down the saddle. My horse is shaking it’s head bc he’s pissed and doesn’t want to listen. But we group and survive level 1. Then the rocks, where it was muddy hard for them to have good footing in the deep mud. Then my horse began to sprint up and down the roads disregarding when I tired to pull up the reigns. My guide decided we should switch horses in the middle of the road.... my gf is now out of sight.... her recollection is she was freaking out and a local helped her by holding her horse till we caught up 6 minutes later. We had another mile on the road. Loco likes to lead so my gf was ahead of the pack again but the horse guides her in the wrong direction. Away from the path “they know”... my new horse Seville also is quite sassy and does not like tight reins but also does not follow the path sometimes and like to run ahead of loco just to annoy him. Nonetheless we got to the waterfall. We were so charged up from one adrenaline rush and the stairs to get down to the falls so we took time to relax and pray that maybe there’s new horses for the ride back. Very wrong. While we were more confident the ride back Loco did end up kicking me when Sevilla tried to pass loco. We laughed cried drank to realize what had occurred. But overall they probably should decommission those horses.

Absolute highlight of our trip (and we loved the entire trip and are considering moving there!)
Absolutely loved this trip! It was booked through our hotel (Kioro Suites) and the driver picked us up there in the morning and dropped us off at the ranch, where we had to fill out a basic form - it is available in English and Spanish. There was a little ginger cat and 2 dogs, all very friendly and loved to be petted. Our tour was led by Jackson, who was fantastic! There was 1 more couple on the tour (bit too much in love with themselves, constantly posing for pictures :P ), so it was not overcrowded. My horse was called Miel and my husband's was Memo. They were both lovely and very well trained and Jackson was able to tell us a little bit about them. We set off from the ranch and Jackson explained how to cross the little streams ahead and how to go up or downhill etc. He was very lovely throughout the entire trip and made an effort to chat to everybody. He also clearly had a very good connection with his horse (I asked and I think he said she was called Vivien, but I have a terrible memory for names, so I might be wrong). I saw nothing of what other people mentioned about the horses not being treated well or being dispirited. Miel had a tick on his neck when we left and was groomed and cleaned at the "horse parking" at the waterfall, and the tick was also removed. We had a good few trots and one short canter and they could get into their little competitions there, so definitely not dispirited (while still absolutely safe and calm!). I used to ride a lot when I was younger, but this was only my husband's 2nd time on a horse and he also felt very safe and absolutely loved the experience. After a wonderful ride through the countryside with trots and amazing views and monkeys and birds we got to the waterfall, where we left the horses (in somebody's care) and went through the main entrance down to the main waterfall pool. Absolutely beautiful spot. Went for a bit of a swim there, the water is nice and refreshing. It is a little bit busy there, but not too bad. The walk back up is a bit tough, but nothing too daunting. There are washrooms and toilets available, as well as a cafe etc. The way back is the same as the way there, but no less lovely the 2nd time around. I was sad it was over. Only thing would be we didn't have a lot of time to say goodbye to our horses, I would have liked that. Very recommended tour, and would do it again right now if I could! I also encouraged my husband to look into becoming a cowboy :) Thank you, Jackson, Miel and Memo, we had the best time, hopefully see you all again soon!

      Excellent!!
My partner and I are experienced riders, so our take might be "biased", but we had an excellent ride. Our guide, Kevin, was attentive but did not micro-manage and had excellent eyes on the horses and stopped frequently to point out and discuss animal sightings. The terrain provided for a scenic, interesting, and somewhat challenging cross-country experience with the horses being exceptionally sure-footed and familiar with the trail. The stop at La Fortuna Arenal waterfall was challenging, with 500 steps down and back, but worth the effort; stunningly beautiful and.refreshing. Riders with some experience will probably enjoy this more than beginners, but with Chaves' professionalism, I would recommend to anyone.

Great experience for the family! We had an amazing time horseback riding and walking down to a fabulous view of the waterfall. Be aware you can only swim when it is calm. We went on a very rainy day and the falls were to rough to swim in. My children were thrilled with this experience being that it was their first time on a horse. So much fun!

We had an amazing time! They were professional, friendly and experienced. The trip to the waterfall led through private fields, somewhat challenging trails and lastly the road to the waterfall (which would seem unavoidable to get to the falls and provided yet another interesting experience!). Our guide, Jackson, provided excellent advice for the waterfalls and was a great picture taker! He let us run with our horses when we wanted to. And the price seemed reasonable - even included the price to the waterfall. Highly recommend!

I'm not a big horse person and they make me slightly nervous but I was very comfortable with this experience! It was a great trail, and we crossed 3 rivers. The waterfall was amazing and you can even swim in it! It is an amazing setup and I'm so happy that I was able to go on this excursion.

We had a great horseback ride to La Fortuna Waterfall. The ride there was on a dirt road. Our guide pointed out a couple of sloths in the trees as well as some birds (FYI - he said that toucans can often be seen around 3-4 pm). Only vehicle on the road was a tractor and wagon full of people doing the ziplining (which looked fun). There is a short walk up the road from the horse pen at the top to the staircase and then down (as others have described). Saw no-one else on the way down. At the bottom it is a little crowded at the waterfall, but still a sight to behold. Was fun to swim in the pool near the waterfall and the water wasn't too cold (although the rocks were slippery). Walk up the stairs wasn't as bad as we expected and our guide stopped to allow slower people in our party to rest. At the top, we were provided pineapple and bottles of water. On the ride back we went on a trail over a stream. We were able to get a great view of the volcano as the clouds lifted. Highly recommend this ride (the group with us hadn't ridden in a while and they loved it).

This was great!! Really enjoyed our ride! These were not your boring trail horses that bump along one after another! These horses have spirit and would trot and show a little character!! Fun first time riding and then the waterfall was unexpectedly beautiful!! The 500 steps down and the path were rugged and beautiful!! A true hike! And then the waterfall was so beautiful and majestic!! You can also swim!! It’s cold but exhilarating!! The hike up is tough(500 stairs, remember?) lol…but we’ll worth it! We were served delicious fresh pineapple and rode back down! Definitely an awesome experience!
