The tour begins in La Fortuna at 8:00 am. After a 1 hour drive through the northern plains, you will arrive at the Indian community Palenque Tonjibe and be warmly received by their people. After a short presentation, you will begin a hike through the village to observe many important aspects of this unique place, such as the way they bury their dead, the antique type of home structures, and their artwork and craftsmanship which currently provide a means of income, the use of cocoa in their farming, and the creation of their clothing. Later you will continue with a walk along a forest trail with 600 meter long (0.37 miles) in order to learn about medicinal plants that the ancestors used, and how we benefit from them today. Here you will also observe some antique huacas or indigenous tombs. Finally you will pass through a Palenque were you will be treated to a traditional Maleku meal.

        Fun hike we enjoyed
Eddy was great! Really enjoyable and educational even in the rain. We liked seeing monkeys, snakes, tarantula and we conquered our fear of heights. Not too scary for those who might be nervous.

Awesome tour, but kind of physically demanding
We loved this tour! The guide was super knowledgeable and was willing to answer all of our many questions. He knew loads about the actual cave, but was also able to answer our questions about the local volcano, hiking in Costa Rica, the wildlife, etc. It was about a 40 minute drive from the start point to the cave, but the guide kept us entertained with lively chatting the whole way. This cave is not like the curated ones that you might encounter in the US and this tour is not for the faint of heart. Because we were such a small group (just myself and my husband), the guides took us on a slightly more strenuous tour than is normally done. They had us crawling through passages that were elbow/thigh deep in water, climbing rock formations in the cave, and squeezing through narrow passages. If you are claustrophobic, afraid of getting dirty (you will be walking through water and bat guano) or afraid of bats, I would not recommend this. If you are open to some adventure, though, this would be a great addition to your trip! This tour was one of the highlights of ours! Definitely bring spare clothes because you will need to shower afterwards at individual bathrooms in the facility near the caves due to the bacteria in the bat guano. Afterwards, you’ll enjoy delicious fresh fruit and cookies. As a whole, an awesome tour and a great way to spend a morning!

Great experience and great staff! I would choose them every time!
We did the following: - Night tour - Hanging bridges (Part of all day tour) - Waterfall (Part of all day tour) - Volcano hike (Part of all day tour) The staff (Jasmin, Daniella, Diego, and Freddy) was amazing. They were extremely friendly and knowledgeable. They were very willing to provide the best possible experience for us and we could tell they enjoyed having us and also enjoyed their work. We are very happy that we chose Ecoterra and would recommend them if anyone on this site is unsure of who to go with. Example of their great service: My wife forgot her water bottle on the shuttle after the excursions. They drove it to our resort within 30 minutes of us calling about it. Very impressed!

        Local experience!
This was a really fun experience! We got to visit a family farm, learn about local flora and fauna, taste the food, and interact with the animals. The family and staff were so nice and welcoming! Diego was a great tour guide.

        Unique experience
This was a very interesting experience and unlike any other we’ve had. Everything was great- from the driver, to the food, to the walking tour. Our guide, Harvin, was like an encyclopedia of all the plants, frogs, lizards and insects we saw. He was skilled at finding them and even helped us take some amazing photos and videos. Definitely worth it.

        The absolute BEST experience!
My two friends and I were visiting Costa Rica for the first time on a girls trip, and this experience was by far one of the BEST things we could have signed up for! We saw so many species of frogs, a sloth, iguanas, and so much more! They make you feel so at home and served the most amazing meal at the end. I would 100% recommend to anyone visiting Costa Rica!!

        ¡ Muchas gracias, Elena !
Elena was my guide for an afternoon hike to the Fortuna waterfall. I was impressed with, and grateful for, her professionalism and dedication. I was really keen to see a sloth, and although that was not part of my planned visit with Elena, she asked our driver to stop at a location so that we could see sloths (two!) on our way to the waterfall.  Once at the waterfall, Elena took her time to share her knowledge with me, and showed me the orchid trail on the way back up. She also took photos throughout our tour, and sent them to me afterwards, as the camera on my mobile phone was broken. It was a pleasure to visit the waterfall with Elena, and I cannot recommend her tour guide services enough.

        Delicious food, beautiful wildlife.
This tour was booked by our travel agent and I went with my two teenage sons. We all really enjoyed this. We had a gentle and knowledgeable guide who showed us lots of beautiful frogs, toads and lizards and let us taste peppercorns from the bushes. The highlight was the delicious food cooked by two women who were great fun, all of us laughing trying to communicate with our varied understanding of each other’s languages. Dinner was served on the balcony with the town lights in the distance. Would highly recommend this experience.

Get to know the El Arenal
Eventhough El Arenal was mysteriously hiding in fogs, we had a great hike with guide Albert. That guy sure knows how to explain nature, eruptions, history and everything else you would like to know. The flora and faunda has no secrets to him. We’ve learned a lot today! And had a great time as well. Thanks Albert!

        Loads of frogs and toads
Really loved the tour, with guide Diego and driver Mario. Not only we got to see many species of frogs and toads, we also saw wolspider, bulletants, sleeping birds, grashoppers etc. Diego is a very skilled and friendly guide, willing to help you get the best out of the night. Besides that he has a grwat sense of humour! Botanical gardens &ecodlodge isn’t actually on tripadvisor, but the vision and good works comes with great hospitality. So i higly recommend this tour!

        wonderful adventure day
Had a great tour 7/18(completely forgot our tour guides names we had 2), started off with the volcano hike; about 90mins-2 hours, had some pineapple, watermelon, and cookies waiting for us when we got back. Hike was pretty easy with steps on the way down, had plenty of time to take photos and learn about the area. Next, we went to the waterfall and had about an hour there after getting changed and walking down the 500+ steps. Towels and tons of water was supplied as well by the tour. After another 500+ step up it was time for lunch at casa moon which was included with the tour, we got to choose an appetizer (the ceviche was delicious) and an entree. After lunch we went to the hanging bridges where we saw monkeys, a snake, spiders, armadillos and coatimundis just to name a few. They dropped us off and picked us up at our hotel(montana de fuego) which was perfect. Thank you and pura vida!

A great way to experience a wonderful location!
This tour was incredible!! I had never been in a cave, and this was a wonderful first experience. Our guide, Gonzalo (apologies if I spelled wrong!), and our driver were incredibly helpful and considerate from start to finish, making us feel safe and comfortable, even when some of our group had moments of claustrophobia (but don't worry - the narrowest parts of the cavern are optional!). Our guide picked us up from our hotel for the drive from La Fortuna, which was super helpful given the 40 min distance and how windy the roads were (we had someone prone to motion sickness in our group and our guide and driver were super helpful and let us pull over for a break midway, which helped a lot). Gonzalo was super clear in describing what we could expect from the tour and when we would have options to do or skip narrower sections. He was very knowledgeable about the wildlife we saw (mainly bats, spiders, a millipede), and also some of the very cool structures within the 30-million year old system, such as the "papaya" and "the alter." Our group split, with 4 out of the 6 of us doing the very narrow "birth canal" and two sitting out, and it was no problem - we were all within safe hearing distance of our guide the whole time. The helmets and headlamps provided worked great, and Gonzalo was great about helping us take photos along the way. The tour is wet and messy, so I strongly recommend wearing clothes you don't care about (the tour will provide rubber boots if you don't have water shoes). Afterwards, showers are available, and they provided us with water, beer, and fresh pineapple and watermelon (best pineapple I've ever had). Gonzalo also made sure we got a before and after photo with the cave entrance to commemorate the trip. A real highlight of our visit to the area, and I strongly recommend if you want to explore and beautiful and unique location with a tour company who has thought of everything you'll need for your comfort and safety!

This tour was the highlight of the whole, amazing vacation! We learned so much, and had a wonderful time.
Jimmy taught us about all the native plants, and their past/present use. He was kind, informative, and patient when I couldn’t shoot the arrow correctly. 😂
The family provided a delicious meal, even making it vegan, especially for us. The fried Yuca was legendary!
I highly recommend this tour. You will not be disappointed!

Everything about this tour was spectacular. We learned so much about the Indigenous Tribe that has been living and still lives here outside of La Fortuna. We enjoyed learning about their history and current life, medicinal plants, crafts (even taught us to cat a gourd), food and song. I would highly recommend this tour.

We were 12 women, family & friends. After the hot springs, restaurants and Arenal. We decided to spend a day at the Maleku Village. We got a history lesson on their culture, community values and a chance to purchase their beautiful art pieces. Great time & informative. Negotiate the prices, they do bargain. … a lot of what they have you can buy cheaper in town but we didn’t mind paying extra to support the indigenous villagers.
