Honestly can’t recommend this enough ! From all tours I saw it was so affordable and so many things packed in a day. There is so much included and is a perfect your for people that aren’t in La Fortuna for long ! We got to see the Volcano and do the trail, do the waterfall, meet the indigenous community “Maleku” and learn from them, get a super tasty lunch and finish the day with drinks and hotsprings. You start at 8:00am and finish at 6:00pm and you don’t feel like you need to see or do anything else. For students and residents, there is a direct discount if you pay it at the office in La Fortuna !
A very big big shoutout to Eric for making us feel like part of his family. He made this trip incredible and was able to spot things in the trees that no one else could. Muchas gracias Eric por tu paciencia, conocimiento y amabilidad. lo apreciamos mucho 🤍

Wybe, the gentleman that heads up Red Lava Tours, really helped us out. We were looking for things to do during our 72 hour stay in La Fortuna and thank God we ran into him at his shop by the square.
He was very knowledgeable about the area and the different tours. He speaks multiple languages, including very good English.
But most importantly, he was there for us when we needed him. You see, our hotel was going to charge us for an extra night, because our tour went longer than expected because of a bigger group. Wybe called our hotel to explain the situation. And then, without us asking, he left his wife to come meet us at the end of the tour. He personally drove us back to our hotel in town, ensuring we wouldn’t be charged an extra $100.
For anyone reading this, more than likely, nothing will go wrong on your tour. But if something does, you can count on Wybe and Red Lava Tours to be there for you.
(He did not ask for this review, but I felt compelled to let people know about this company.)
He is the definition of Pure Vida!

This tour is truly a full day and hits all the highlights that La Fortuna has to offer. We started off our day meeting our tour guide, Uriel. The schedule of the tour is really spot on, there is a lot of hiking involved and our calves were sore the next day. I logged around 14,000 steps during this tour. There are places to change into swimsuits prior to going to the waterfall and hot springs (although you will have to hike from where the bathrooms are to the waterfall). I recommend bringing/buying some water-friendly hiking shoes (closed-toed probably preferred, I had closed-toed with open sides and back which were perfect). I also recommend dry fit clothes. I also hiked in my swim shorts which I thought was fine for the day. We purchased microfiber towels online which were compact and fit well in our backpack. We spent a total of about 1.5hrs at the waterfall and 1 hour in the hot springs. You may want to bring some snacks or/and eat a good breakfast as you will be hiking a lot during this tour. You will probably want to take it easier the following day.

For some, this tour may have too much hiking and you may want to do the highlights without the hiking in between. You will have to do some hiking regardless to get to the waterfall. Pack efficiently for the day so your backpack is not weighing you down.

This was the best experience we had in Costa Rica. Isaac was such a fun, knowledgeable tour guide, and we were able to get to know La Fortuna and its surrounding beauty more than we thought possible. By the end of the tour, we felt as if we had known our tour group prior to meeting them that day, and overall it was simply a wonderful experience and opportunity to make friends and explore all that the area has to offer. We saw so much wildlife, such as agouti, coati, blue jean frogs, and more. We also learned a lot about Costa Rica’s history and culture, and felt much more knowledgeable about the area we were in after completing the tour. If you want an all-encompassing informative, nature-packed, fun, and adventurous tour, book this one—you won’t regret it!

My boyfriend and I spent two days in La Fortuna, and booked this tour so that we could see as much as possible in a day. We were not disappointed. Erick was such an amazing, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable guide who made sure everyone on our tour got the most out of their experience. Since there were so many people booked on that day, we did our trip a little out of order. We started around the volcano before lunch. Then, we hiked down to the waterfall. It is hard work, but it was so worth it to get those views; we actually preferred this schedule so we could cool off in the waterfall near the end. Ending at the hot spring with some cocktails was also perfect - with a good view of the sunset behind the volcano. Erick definitely made our experience though and we learned so much about history, animals, and nature in general. I would recommend this to anyone who isn’t afraid to get a lot of steps in (17,000 that day with 134 flights climbed according to my watch) but know it’s worth it!

Also, shout out to the driver for putting up with a packed car all day. He also made sure everyone was as comfortable as they could be!

10/10!!! I can’t recommend this tour enough! Our day (which is as about 11 hours, time frame given is accurate) started with a pick-up (transport all included in price) which was easy to find and communicated about with the guide, Antony/Toni. Our first stop was a beautiful floral and butterfly garden where we saw native frogs as well. We then went to the gorgeous waterfall which was a decent but not too hard hike. Along the way we would stop to spot cool plants or animals in which Toni seemed to know all about (if you pointed to it, he knew it! Super knowledgeable). We also passed a cool bridge going over a river that our guide took photos on. The waterfall was still pretty strong for late November! We had an hour to jump in (water shoes here optional, half of the people wore water shoes and half were barefoot; definitely would want towel to dry off and change of clothes if your clothes are not swimsuit/dry-fit material). After we went back up the trail, we went to a nice lunch in the town with delicious local food (covered in price). Then we hiked to volcano which was only partly covered by clouds (it normally is unless it’s raining), and spotted animals along the way as well. Our guide brought an awesome scope to view the animals up close and videoed those as well. Last stop was the hot spring to enjoy the spring and an alcoholic beverage should we have liked. This day was so so so many good things hence the long paragraph but I just want to get across how worth it it was! Our guide was incredible and we saw and did so much in just 11 hours. Highly recommend, everything was spectacular and so beautiful. Pura vida!

This tour is the perfect full-day activity for a weekend in La Fortuna, and the price is great given everything you will see.I loved the variety of activities - volcano hike, rope swing, swimming in a waterfall, Maleku village, natural hot springs - and our tour guide, Santiago, was amazing! He brought great energy, a wealth of flora and fauna knowledge, and an evident passion for wildlife and the outdoors. We ended up going to Rio Celeste the next morning and he is great company! Bring a swimsuit, a towel, bug spray, sunscreen, and water. I couldn’t recommend this tour and our guide highly enough!!!

Hi Sydney, Thanks for telling about your experience. Two days of stunning nature with a highly energetic guide will get your blood pumping. Of course I don´t know about your living situation but it may well be urban and you may lead a busy professional life. That beeing the case, I can imagine that beeing here in nature can be a very good way to reconnect with your primary senses and that it can energize and inspire you. Luckely here in la Fortuna we have more than enough beautiful nature to offer and we have people that are more than happy to have you experience it to the maximum.

It is difficult to break this day down to a favorite part. We had a full, varied day with an excellent guide, Christian. He was knowledgeable, courteous, and added humor.
We began with a nature walk to see flowers, butterflies, and poisonous dart frogs. We were then taken on a tractor driven ride where we began a hike to the falls. It was beautitiful but the walk was challenging. We then went to visit an indigenous couple which was a little disappointing. They did a short presentation and we were then allowed to purchase their handicrafts..
Lunch after the falls was relaxing and delicious. My husband had the fish and I had chicken, both excellent.
After lunch we visited the lava fields of Arenal, another hike but not as intense. This was followed up with Costa Rican highball and a trip to the hot springs. Our guide applied volcano mud to our faces as we relaxed in the warm pool.
Wonderful day!

We (myself, my sister, in our thirties, and my mom) took this tour in February with Anthony and Nano as our guides. It was a very full day of activity as described and a great value for the amount of things that we did. The areas we visited were really beautiful and we saw and learned so many amazing things. Nano was our main guide for most of the tour and was very encouraging and knowledgable. Although it was a fun day it was also very tiring and this tour was difficult for my mom who wanted to stop after the first half although kudos to her she did make it through! There are many stairs to climb throughout the day and the pace of the hikes, especially the first one, was challenging and we felt we couldn't easily stop to enjoy our surroundings but given the amount of activity for the tour it was understandable that we were on a schedule. The swim at the waterfall was refreshing but again a bit challenging to get into so my mom opted out. For the second part, the arenal hike, they did split us off into two groups so it did not feel as intense but by that time we were pretty tired out by the first hike so the climbing of all the stairs was tough. I would say that this is an excellent tour for those that are in good physical fitness and do not have any hip or knee issues. The guides were attentive and passionate about what they do and it was an enjoyable experience overall despite the sore muscles :) The soak in the hot pools at the end of the tour was a good way to end the day.

My oh my, I don't even know where to start. For starters, my guide was Carlos, and my driver was Piola.
The night before I had sprained my ankle (swollen for the tour) but wasn't going to let it stop me, though I was upfront with the guide about the situation and that I may have to cut it short. Thankfully I was the only one on the tour. It worked out. Carlos was concerned but knew how much I wanted to do the tour so he made it happen. He was attentive to my requests, guided me through the walk -while hobbling-, and made sure I got the best of the tour, and let me tell you he really did go far and beyond. He was very patient with me and that's a key factor when going on tours. He was very informative, knowledgeable with great points and hilarious! He and the driver were just the best. Honestly, they had me laughing the entire time. Even when there was an accident on the road and we were stuck on the road for quite some time, they made the time pass quicker! The walk to waterfall was amazing. Beautiful forest and the waterfall in itself was just WOW. Make sure you take water shoes here for the sensitive feet out there!!!

Then we got lunch and everything was deliciously made! Hands down.

The Lava trails were really cool to see with the added story behind how it all happened. Very interesting.

Aaaand last but not least, the thermals!! Ugh. Once you get there you literally do NOT want to leave. You could just fall asleep in the warm water. Perfect to sooth you down after a long day.
I would definitely recommend taking this tour!

Hi Mia, You are a brave and determined person. Glad we were able to help you have this experience. Our guides and drivers like Carlos and Piola are of course hired based on what they know but equally important is their personality and the fact that they have the right welcoming and service orientated attitude. These are things that at best come natural and are hard to teach. Even when its tought the result is often limited to the verbal friendliness and does not mean the person will actualy stand tall and do the extra work that is involved in giving the customer this best experience. Glad to hear they did this and that you appreciated it.
