- Da_Mout0 contributions¡ Muchas gracias, Elena !Elena was my guide for an afternoon hike to the Fortuna waterfall. I was impressed with, and grateful for, her professionalism and dedication. I was really keen to see a sloth, and although that was not part of my planned visit with Elena, she asked our driver to stop at a location so that we could see sloths (two!) on our way to the waterfall. Once at the waterfall, Elena took her time to share her knowledge with me, and showed me the orchid trail on the way back up. She also took photos throughout our tour, and sent them to me afterwards, as the camera on my mobile phone was broken. It was a pleasure to visit the waterfall with Elena, and I cannot recommend her tour guide services enough.Written September 3, 2024
- TanyaP810 contributionsDelicious food, beautiful wildlife. This tour was booked by our travel agent and I went with my two teenage sons. We all really enjoyed this. We had a gentle and knowledgeable guide who showed us lots of beautiful frogs, toads and lizards and let us taste peppercorns from the bushes. The highlight was the delicious food cooked by two women who were great fun, all of us laughing trying to communicate with our varied understanding of each other’s languages. Dinner was served on the balcony with the town lights in the distance. Would highly recommend this experience.Written August 2, 2024

- 498amv0 contributionsGet to know the El ArenalEventhough El Arenal was mysteriously hiding in fogs, we had a great hike with guide Albert. That guy sure knows how to explain nature, eruptions, history and everything else you would like to know. The flora and faunda has no secrets to him. We’ve learned a lot today! And had a great time as well. Thanks Albert!Written July 26, 2024
- 498amv0 contributionsLoads of frogs and toadsReally loved the tour, with guide Diego and driver Mario. Not only we got to see many species of frogs and toads, we also saw wolspider, bulletants, sleeping birds, grashoppers etc. Diego is a very skilled and friendly guide, willing to help you get the best out of the night. Besides that he has a grwat sense of humour! Botanical gardens &ecodlodge isn’t actually on tripadvisor, but the vision and good works comes with great hospitality. So i higly recommend this tour!Written July 26, 2024
- Tiff-ah-knee0 contributionswonderful adventure dayHad a great tour 7/18(completely forgot our tour guides names we had 2), started off with the volcano hike; about 90mins-2 hours, had some pineapple, watermelon, and cookies waiting for us when we got back. Hike was pretty easy with steps on the way down, had plenty of time to take photos and learn about the area. Next, we went to the waterfall and had about an hour there after getting changed and walking down the 500+ steps. Towels and tons of water was supplied as well by the tour. After another 500+ step up it was time for lunch at casa moon which was included with the tour, we got to choose an appetizer (the ceviche was delicious) and an entree. After lunch we went to the hanging bridges where we saw monkeys, a snake, spiders, armadillos and coatimundis just to name a few. They dropped us off and picked us up at our hotel(montana de fuego) which was perfect. Thank you and pura vida!Written July 24, 2024
- E4772KVsaraht0 contributionsA great way to experience a wonderful location! This tour was incredible!! I had never been in a cave, and this was a wonderful first experience. Our guide, Gonzalo (apologies if I spelled wrong!), and our driver were incredibly helpful and considerate from start to finish, making us feel safe and comfortable, even when some of our group had moments of claustrophobia (but don't worry - the narrowest parts of the cavern are optional!). Our guide picked us up from our hotel for the drive from La Fortuna, which was super helpful given the 40 min distance and how windy the roads were (we had someone prone to motion sickness in our group and our guide and driver were super helpful and let us pull over for a break midway, which helped a lot). Gonzalo was super clear in describing what we could expect from the tour and when we would have options to do or skip narrower sections. He was very knowledgeable about the wildlife we saw (mainly bats, spiders, a millipede), and also some of the very cool structures within the 30-million year old system, such as the "papaya" and "the alter." Our group split, with 4 out of the 6 of us doing the very narrow "birth canal" and two sitting out, and it was no problem - we were all within safe hearing distance of our guide the whole time. The helmets and headlamps provided worked great, and Gonzalo was great about helping us take photos along the way. The tour is wet and messy, so I strongly recommend wearing clothes you don't care about (the tour will provide rubber boots if you don't have water shoes). Afterwards, showers are available, and they provided us with water, beer, and fresh pineapple and watermelon (best pineapple I've ever had). Gonzalo also made sure we got a before and after photo with the cave entrance to commemorate the trip. A real highlight of our visit to the area, and I strongly recommend if you want to explore and beautiful and unique location with a tour company who has thought of everything you'll need for your comfort and safety!Written July 21, 2024
- kimberlysH9221IS0 contributionsHighlight of our tripJazmin was one of the best tour guides we've ever had. She was very knowledgeable about birds and where to find them we identified 22 confirmed species - including toucans, a rufous-tailed jacamar and a rare Black Phoebe - and spotted many more. We also saw vampire bats, howler monkeys, red poison dart frogs and a coati. Jazmin was also a great photographer, taking photos with our phones through the spotting scope. And at the end, our driver (I think his name was Freddy) had a picnic breakfast set up for us, with sandwiches, fruit, nuts, cookies, juice and coffee. Highly recommended!Written July 13, 2024
- asaffy0 contributionsSo impressed by Arenal VolcanoArenal Volcano in La Fortuna was impressive to say the least! Hiking up to the base of the Volcano was an amazing experience. We paid to enter the park and hiked on our own without a guide. The trails are marked you cant get lost. You cannot hike up to the crater, it is illegal now. Bring water and hiking shoes. I loved the town of La Fortuna, it was quiet and beautiful. There isn't much to do there and it gets dark by 5:45-6:00. We went to the hot springs, in Eco Termales, which were nice but not worth the price we paid ($47 pp). The Soda restaurants are a great place to eat, affordable and the food is GREAT. Do yourself a favor and get a batido de sandia con leche, you will thank me later! We later visited Monteverde and Manuel Antonio but I think I liked La Fortuna the best!Written July 13, 2024

- jordanlZ1813IW0 contributionsA thrilling and educational experience, truly wild yet tame at the same time!My father and I went and had an amazing time, the guide taught us about the millions of years of history all while showing us all of the cool critters & formations. Definitely challenging sometimes but the challenging paths are optional, I highly reccomend coming here for a wild yet fascinating experience.Written June 30, 2024
- R3492GTkatiee0 contributionsAmazing tour guide! We had a great private tour with Jasmine as our guide. She was very knowledgeable about the plants and animals. She was very friendly and made it a point to look for plants and animals to show us through her spotting scope. She had even brought walking sticks just in case, which my husband did need. We had a really enjoyable time with Jasmine and learned a lot about the volcano, plants, and animals.Written June 29, 2024
- KathTraveler50 contributionsWhat a great nature day!Well-organized, super streamlined way to experience four different activities in a single day! Our guide Albert was a highly informed and good-natured naturalist, filling us in on all kinds of fascinating facts about all the characters he helped us spot, photograph and film - frogs, sloths, monkeys, honeybees, ants, snakes, lizards. Learning about the natural processes and interdependencies between the creatures and all the trees, plants, and their functions, histories, and environmental impact made this a richly fulfilling journey through rainforest and volcano. I would have loved a little more time for swimming at the La Fortuna waterfall, but we were fitting a lot into a single day! The van was well air conditioned for a welcome cool-off while in transit between sites. We chose the option to end the day at Baldi Hot Springs with dinner, which I didn't realize would be a buffet, not be in the regular restaurant. The options were plentiful, just a large tour group ambience instead of resort hotel tables with service.Written June 27, 2024

We took this tour with a tour guide Jose who walked us around the Arenal Hanging Bridges Park. He told us interesting facts about the park itself, flora and fauna. He has a great catchy eye and helped us to see animals and birds. He is also a good photographer!
We enjoyed soaking at Baldi Hot Springs thermal pools. Please note to have $7 with you to pay for a locker if you wish to get one.

The arena volcano walk was made even better thanks to our guide Antonio who was fantastic. His knowledge of the fauna and the flora that he would share generously was excellent ! We then went to the waterfalls for a dip in the cold water under the tropical rain, an unforgettable experience.
After a really lovely lunch we went to the suspended bridge area where we saw all kind of animals and trees.
We booked the three tours but they can be done separately. Highly recommended.

We did the full day of hike, waterfall, hanging bridges and hot springs. The hot spring dinner was a perfect way to unwind after a busy day. We highly recommend this company!

We booked a trip via Groupon for April. We were encouraged to upgrade to Tabacon Natural Springs which is extraordinarily beautiful so of course we upgraded.
While we did this, timing of the day was not discussed by the agent, Karen Vargas. She sent us multiple itineraries and vouchers with military times but did not mentioned it when selling us on the upgrade. I am upset over it because the hike itself is very short but it does not account for who is hiking so it can go for longer. The sun in Costa Rica sets very early and quite abruptly in comparison to sunsets in the states. The sunsets at 5:30 pm and it gets pitch black within 15-30 minutes.
So we ended up finishing the hike and everyone just waited around for god knows what. It seemed to me the guides were just hanging out. We end up at Tabacon with only 30 minutes of sun left to enjoy the springs. I saw this VERY intensely as the springs were very lowly lit which made it incredibly hard to navigate. The springs had lots of rocks in them so if you were not wearing water shoes, your feet were going to be sore and even if you did, you can't account for the larger boulders you randomly walk right into. Don't get me wrong, the springs are breathtaking but the need for water shoes and going in the early day so you avoid unwanted meetings with rocks is something you should be warned about.
Very unhappy with an experienced I upgraded to, I emailed Karen. She did not respond so I sought her out at her Casa Luna "office." Front desk attendant told me she'd be there after 8am. I wait around and nothing. He says she'll be back by the time I come back from my activity. I come back and he tells me she is not coming in but can connect me to an operator. I speak to Michael and reiterate that it was upsetting not being able to enjoy the springs in daylight. He gave me a run around about how it is clearly stated as a night time activity in the voucher. I state that we received the voucher AFTER being sold on the upgrade. Again, says we should have noticed on the voucher. The voucher says no such thing about it being a night time activity. It just has the time. So I explain there was no way for us, tourists, to know that the time there would mean it would be so dark so quickly. Again, gives me the run around. Goes as far as to say this is the first time someone has ever complained about it. Karen emails not me, but my travel buddy back, with the exact same response.
There was no apology or even pretend empathy for the miscommunication or dissatisfaction. I couldn't help but feel cheated on the upgrade and would not have done it had I known it would be a night activity. I could have gone to the regular springs that had lights in the water and I could have avoided many bruises.

Our tour was provided by Ecoterra, who did an absolute wonderful job on the Arenal Volcano National Park hike. They picked us up from our hotel on time and we headed to the park. The actual hike was about an hour and half. We spotted many wildlife and plants, due to the guide's extensive knowledge. Once the hike was complete, we had a beautiful display of watermelon and pineapple ready for us to eat! We then headed to a local restaurant for a typical Costa Rican meal. Once lunch was over, we were dropped off at the Tabacon Grand Thermal Resort for the rest of the day and dinner. Ecoterra arranged a pick up time for us and dropped us off back at our hotel in the evening.

This was the first time we ever booked a vacation through Groupon, so it was comforting reading all of the great reviews of EcoTerra here beforehand. We weren't disappointed-our 7 day, 6 night trip was fantastic because of how organized and responsive EcoTerra was. Our travel agent, Karen, quickly responded to our questions before our trip. All of our pick-ups and transfers were on time and we felt safe with all of our drivers. Our guides were knowledgeable and patient, and our hike to Arenal was the highlight of our trip-the views made us feel like we were in paradise! They provided hiking sticks, got us to the best views and even took photos of our family for us. Afterwards they provided water, fresh fruits and snacks before taking us to the hot springs. Thank you Ecoterra for a great vacation!

My friend and I booked a 6-day Costa Rica vacation package through Groupon and was not disappointed from start to finish. We started our adventure to Casa Luna with our driver, Adamar, who was very personable and took good care of us. We were fortunate to have him as our driver again for the transfer from La Fortuna to Jaco. Very nice man, and gave me an opportunity to practice my Spanish!
We booked several hiking tours (HIGHLY recommend the Rio Celeste/Blue River hike) and lucked out with one of the most knowledgeable tour guides I've ever had, Mainor. He treated us like family, taught us things we didn't know about Costa Rica and showed a genuine care and appreciation for ecotourism. We ended our tours feeling like we've made a new friend, truly inspiring.
Casa Luna hotel in La Fortuna was amazing, the views were absolutely breathtaking. Listening to the symphony of frogs in the evening was mesmerizing, and the views from just about everywhere were incredible. The flora and fauna of this area are nothing short of spectacular. We were even fortunate enough to see the very top of Arenal Volcano without any clouds, something only a small percentage of tourists have the opportunity to see. Very blessed!
This is my 3rd time visiting this beautiful country and Ecoterra Costa Rica made it very memorable indeed. Would definitely recommend to anyone. Pura Vida!

We took a hike over the lava flows of the Arenal volcano. Our guides were Gustavo and Mainor, both were extremely friendly and knowledgeable. They had stopped the bus on the way for us to see a Sloth, helped our children take photos and Mainor even sent me some of his (much better!) photos afterwards. Gustavo was really interesting on the hike, pointing out plants and wildlife and giving us lots of information about the volcano. Afterwards we were taken to the Ecotermales hot springs. The trip was really well organised and I would recommend this company.

Hi, is there a minimal age for children? Planning a trip in a few months and my son will be 3 1/2. He's always done well on excursions with us and we would like to bring him. If so, do we need to pay a child's fee?
