What to expect
After being picked up at your La Fortuna hotel, drive to Rio Balsa for this rafting tour. First, receive safety training and be outfitted with a paddle, life vest, and helmet. Plus, you’ll be shown paddling techniques and basic rafting tips. Then, head out on the river for the 6-mile (10-kilometer) trip through the rapids. Be prepared to get wet while your guide helps you navigate Class III rapids during the first half of the ride, which is the most challenging. Once you clear this section of the rapids, stop along the river for a snack. Following that, climb back into the raft and head toward Class II rapids. Along the way, view the tropical rainforest landscape and possibly spot wildlife like monkeys, sloths, and birds. This was a fun experience overall. The guides and everyone were very nice. The rapids were not difficult or scary at all and perfect for a beginner. The guides tried to spot animals to show you which was nice. Most of the animals were from afar but we saw bats, toucan, and sloths. They didn't try to pressure you into buying photos at the end which we liked. Note you must wear closed toed shoes. We wore crocs which were perfect but another group wore flip flops and they were made to buy water shoes at a local store. The only reason I took 1 star off is that the lunch was at their company's location and wasn't that great. On another tour that we did with another local company they took us to an actual restaurant in town for lunch which was amazing and much better vibe.

I went with a few friends (and one mom) who have never been whitewater rafting before. They were all pretty nervous, but the guides did a fantastic job of keeping everyone safe and making sure we all had a blast! Our raft guide David was fun, passionate, and told us a lot about the area and Costa Rica in general. Would recommend to anyone who loves whitewater rafting, or who wants to check it out for the first time, you won’t be disappointed!

Desafio adventure co. is a great company, with awesome well trained staff and amazing tours! Our 2 kids have never river rafted before and were both a little nervous but after we were welcomed right at our hotel gate with warm smiles we knew there was nothing to be scared of! We drove about 40 minutes to the river, and had a great safety demonstration. Our river guide, Kendall aka 'Avatar' was excellent, experienced, and hilarious!
When it was time to go into the river our team had so much fun bumping, splashing, and paddling over the rapids. The scenery was beautiful, and Kendall pointed out iguanas, birds, and plenty of sloths. Halfway through our adventure we stopped for some delicious fresh fruit and proceeded down the thrilling, adrenaline-filled river to where the tour ends. (The real river ends in Nicaragua) While there were definitely parts where we laughed as the water washed over us and we sped down the river, we felt very safe at all times. We got off the rafts and there were places to change, shower, and even buy drinks! We then ended our unreal experience by driving back to la fortuna to desafio's restaurant: hunter gatherers where we were served amazing authentic costa rican food by warm and friendly staff. This Is definitely the best tour in all of arenal and maybe all of costa rica! 10/10 would do it again! Pure vida and thank you Desafio company!

We did the Balsa River rafting trip yesterday and we thought it would be a good first time experience for our 10 and 12 year old. By the time we got to the river and waited for several buses to show up, it took over an hour before we even made it down to the rafts to hear the instructions.

Once we got in, it started out great but about 20 minutes in and as we navigated through some more challenging rapids, our guide tried to surf the raft sideways over some rocks and our boat started to capsize. However, instead of fully capsizing, my 10 year old daughter and husband were thrown out of the boat. It was very scary! The guide pulled my daughter in very quickly and it took a little longer to get my husband since he was floating away. They were both banged up and my son was pretty freaked out seeing his father struggling to get back to the boat. The guide tried to make light of it with several jokes (which my daughter started to ask if he almost flipped the boat on purpose)... he obviously didn’t but I think he wasn’t as safe as he should have been since we were following all his instructions and no other boat had anyone else fall in.

The second part of the trip is much easier but we were all shook up and half of us bruised from falling into the rocks that it was hard to enjoy.

At one point you can get out and float alongside the boat, which I did but the guide (who happened to be the head guide) didn’t really explain how shallow the water was and that I shouldn’t have jumped in and should have slid off the boat instead. Now I’m also bruised up from the rocks at the bottom (it was much more shallow than I thought!)

Needless to say, class 2/3 was a lot more challenging for kids that I had hoped and you should realize falling in is a real possibility and it hurts!!!

We used rafting trips as a way to get from town to town, twice! It’s not that much more than a private shuttle and of course, you get to river raft, which is so fun, combining a group effort with adrenaline and some beautiful nature. We started in la fortuna, rafted the Balsa River with Luis, and then got a ride all the way down to Quepos, which was about a 5 hour drive. Our driver Arturo was so professional and kind, the tour also included lunch! A win win 🤙🏼

This is the husband. Just want to give another huge shout out to Arturo; that man is a professional to the bone! Navigated the roads with utter coolness and never looked at his phone or listened to music or anything. Not saying there’s anything wrong with listening to music but dang... it was a long drive. I’m leaving leaving Costa Rica inspired to be better at my own job.

This was such a perfect trip for our family and first rafting experience with our 9 year old. Momo our rafting guide was super high energy and fun and very skilled. Julio and Gerald and all the other staff were friendly, attentive, and communicated well what was happening, what to expect etc. The experience with the farm to table lunch and education was an extra I didn’t even expect but we appreciated.
Solid operation. Would definitely recommend!

Guide: Jorge, highly recommended, many years of experience … Photographer and Safety Kayak: Randy.

This was the first time event rafting for all in a party of four and we agreed it was THE best excursion of the vacation that included horse back and zip lining. Our only regret was waiting until the end and not having sufficient time to go again on class 3/4.

Perfect balance of education for novices, safety and fun!

The included lunch was a bonus and the pictures came out great!

David and his team are wonderful! Accomodating for all ages and abilities - we had 10-50yr age group. Rapids were great for first timers or those who had rafted a few times. Briefing and set up was informative, felt very safe. Very professionally run, great lunch following the raft. Approx 10km, mixture of rapids and float. We were able to jump into the river too. Highly recommend!
