      Everything I Hoped For
I was really looking forward to this tour, and it was everything I hoped for. We had a 3:00 ticket, but there was no issue switching to 2:00 when we arrived early. The guide was enthusiastic, and was really informative. Loved all the stories. Being in that room was a thrill. Great tour.

Now Muscle Shoals has got the Swampers...
Focusing more on early 70s rock, this recording studio reminded me of how talented some of the behind the scene people are in our American music history. It felt like a step back in time and was absolutely one of my favorite stops in the area. Terrell had stories for days. (Please give this man an award - he is preserving a very special, unique part of history.) There is parking next to the small, one studio building and plenty of chances for great photos. The 'Muscle Shoals Sound Studio Tour in Sheffield Alabama' is listed separately on here, as it is an activity. Be sure to check out those amazing reviews as well. I bought their affordable tickets online through their easy to use, updated website. Their website ends with dot org because it's truly a foundation and they take donations. And yes, it's called Muscle Shoals but it is technically in Sheffield. The two small towns are right next to each other and less than a five minute drive apart.

Must stop if you're a Rock and Roll fan. History of the music that came out of the museum if special.

      Wonderful Tour
The tour guide was wonderful. He is a wealth of knowledge and stories. We had to wait about 40 minutes for the next tour and the guy running it was great at telling some of the stories of the place too. So it seemed like 2 tours in one! Highly recommend if you're in the area.

      Excellent tour!
Visited here after visiting FAME studios which was great but a different experience. This was a private tour since we were the only ones on it. Chase was a very informative and enthusiastic guide. He even demonstrated guitar licks for us.Very small studio but tons of history. Learning more about the Swampers was fascinating.

Muscle Shoals Swampers! Great tour for all music lovers.
Excellent tour that focused on music, people, and history. The Tour Guide told great stories and was really good at answering questions. The studio is small, but the stories filled the time. Must do when in the area.

Muscle Shoals has got the Swampers!
We stopped here on our drive from Wisconsin to Florida. It was well worth the side trip & extra time. Loved learning the history of the studio. We’d definitely recommend it.

      Special place, great tour
LOVED this. We were on a road trip through Mississippi and Alabama and stopped by one morning. Small place but fascinating. The guide really knew her stuff. It felt very special and even a bit emotional to be in this room. Also got a chance to play the piano in the studio. Recommended.

Fascinating peek into music history of the '60s and '70s
We walked in and did a tour with a really awesome guide from the staff. He knew the history of the building and music and also knew the instruments and musicians. He would show us an instrument and then play part of a song that had featured it. He also told us the stories of the musicians -- both the session players and the performers who came to town to use their services. Really, really fascinating. We spent a day in Muscle Shoals -- could have stayed for two or three. Went to the FAME studio and the birthplace of W.C. Handy. We drove by the Frank Lloyd Wright house but didn't have time to stop. Next time! Driving around town you get a real sense of the history and other music studios that were here. I think our guide said there were 17 at one point? You can see their faded signs on buildings down the road. Singin' River Brewery is a great stop for refreshment if you like beer; very friendly and helpful bartender and lots of locals to chat with. There's also a very active restaurant "district" downtown with lots of options for food. It was a fun day.

Standing in the sounds of giands
This incredibly influential studio has seen so many amazing musicians record that to list would be a long process. Like Sun Studios, still regularly recording. What drew people was an amazing 'house band' and a sound and vibe that was 'unique. Well worth the stop. Bonus: Frank Lloyd Wright house is 10 minutes away....twofer....

      great musical history
Glad they put the effort into restoring the building so people could enjoy the music history. Most of it is original. Tour guide was great and spent all the time we wanted with us.

      Only one place to go
If you have time for only one tour, make it here—not FAME Studios. To look at the buildings, both appear to be of no importance. However, the guides will be what makes those spaces come alive (or not, as in the case of FAME). Our guide Terrell at M.S. Sound Studio told us the most amazing stories. I wanted to remember the fun anecdotes about all the artists that came here to record in this unassuming place, but he told us so many that I find I need to take the tour again! Seeing the documentary about the music recorded here helps, but those stories related in person are priceless.

      Music history and more
If you know anything about music then you know what this place means to great music. Small building but lots to talk about. Still a working studio. A great tour is to be had and the greats once walked these floors. It's not very big but MS has so much layering to what it was and is. Hours are solid so make sure to double-check times, the tour takes over an hour but worth it. Souvenir site on premisis .

Music fans of all levels will appreciate this place. I live in Arizona. I booked and paid online on June 19 for a tour of the studio on July 7 when I would be passing through Muscle Shoals on an extensive road trip. I was deliberately stopping in Muscle Shoals just to take this tour. When I arrived on July 6, I checked online that everything I was planning to see was still open as things have been sketchy due to Covid. The website said they were temporarily closed with no further information.

I went on the Fame Studios tour and learned from someone else there that it was true that Muscle Shoals Sound Studio was closed. Interesting that they did not bother to notify the people who had paid for the tour. Very surprising and disrespectful. After visiting Fame, I drove over to the studio to see if any further information was posted on the door. Nope. Met another music fan there who had this place on his bucket list. He had traveled from Indianapolis to visit the studio. He was just as disappointed as I was.

Upon returning to my hotel, I used the Contact Us form to ask if they would be open on July 21 as I was going to be traveling back through Alabama on that date and could rearrange my plans. It was really important to me to take the tour as I likely will not be in Alabama ever again. I never received a response.

On July 7, the day of my tour, I was not notified until two hours before the tour per email from Ana Megan Hyde that the studio was closed due to an electrical issue and they refunded my money. I responded to her email thanking her for the refund and again asked if they thought they would be open on July 21. Again, I received no response whatsoever.

I understand that they are a working recording studio and dealing with artists is a much higher priority than giving tours. However, not having the decency to reply to a legitimate question from someone who paid for a tour is really uncalled for. If this is how they treat visitors, then I am glad I did not get to take the tour or waste money on a donation. Upon looking at their website now, it says they are open again. Don't bother.

We bought our tour tickets online back in January for a tour on Monday, March 28th @ 11:30am.
We were there at 11:15am and it was closed!
Couldn’t call because the answering machine was full!
Very disappointed since we were leaving the next day and really wanted to tour. We travelled from WI.
I guess they work on their own schedule.

We are so sorry about your experience. We have been closed on Monday for some time now but there was a glitch in the Viatour system that for some reason displayed that we were open that particular day. We would be glad to give you a refund. Please email ana@msmusicfoundation.org. Again our sincere apologies for your unfortunate experience.

Muscle Shoals Sound Studios (256-978-5151) – opens at 10am, tours start at 10:30 on the half hour. I went to the 11:30 am tour with Chase. Great vibe in this small studio where Mavis Staples, Cher, The Rolling Stones, Bob Segar, etc. all recorded. Chase said that Jerry Wexler had the Stones record 3 songs here after playing in Florida and Auburn before going to play at the infamous Altamonte, CA concert. Since The Stones did not have a work visa for recording in the US, these recordings were under the radar and the studio is not mentioned on the Sticky Fingers album. Wild Horses, Brown Sugar and a third song were recorded here. Thanks to Dre for donating money to help restore this piece of history.

Oh my! If you love the music of the 60’s and 70’s, you must do this! The Jackson Hwy location - not the newer one, which we did not visit. Terrell Benton was our tour guide, and he knew, admired, and obviously loved the “Swampers”. Standing in that old studio, listening to Benton’s stories of the recordings and artists, told with the appreciation and reverence they deserve, I was simply mesmerized. Benton is easily the best tour guide I have had, and the studio itself is a treasure. Book it, and enjoy!!

After touring the Fame Recording studio, we toured this one the next day. This place offers tours every hour, on the 1/2 hour. Our guide was very knowledgeable, with lots of interesting stores to tell, along with the facts and history. Muscle Shoals Sound is more affordable. We recommend touring both places for a complete picture of the amazing music that has come out of this town. Note that parking is off a side street; not from the main road out front.

The staff here are really nice. Terrell, our guide, did a fantastic job relating what is special about 3614 Jackson Highway. I'll give you a hint -- it's not the building, though the history of the building and what was done to make it usable as a recording studio is interesting. If you didn't know what happened at that address you would drive right on by without a thought. Stop in and give Terrell your attention for a little while, though, and you'll realize you're standing on holy ground, a place where some really cool and talented people had fun creating something special. My wife and I enjoyed this tour more than the tour of another famous studio in the area. We both agreed that the difference was Terrell's inimitable charm and ability to tell stories.

We had a great tour with Terrell. Had him all to ourselves at the 1230 time slot. His stories entertained and taught about the history of this little block building that changed the world of music. Personal anecdotes of each of the swampers and musicians who recorded here. A must see for all music lovers.

A most unprepossessing exterior. We were underwhelmed and went in to book our tour out of a senses of duty and with low expectations….

The two famous studios have tours lined up to complement each other. We started at Fame at 09:00 (just after) and we’re able to get to the 10:30 tour at Muscle Shoals Sound Studio without issue. This should be your second stop so you can see where it began and then come here to see the next part of the story. And to be honest, this is the stop with a bit more soul. No knock to FAME at all, but the vibe here is straight “music is awesome so let’s talk about it.” You’re likely to do both (and should), but if for some reason you can only make the one stop, then this is the one we would recommend. Our tour guide was an absolutely incredible wealth of knowledge.

My Mom and I drove up from Birmingham to tour the studios. MSS was our first stop and luckily we had our own private tour with Chase. He was awesome, sharing stories of what happened where in the studio, what some of the interactions were like between the artists and the session players. He was very knowledgeable about the place, its history and the artists who recorded there. Was a fantastic and informative tour. Best of luck to Chase in his engineering and producing career at an iconic studio! Review requires family with children or teens, it was just my Mom and I and I'm in my 50's.
