I took the Zhujiajiao countryside/watertown private tour from Shanghai in April 2011. I was visiting a friend who is living in Shanghai, but she had to work during the day so I arranged for a tour by myself. I looked for a public tour to join but there were none that would have gotten me out of Shanghai during my stay. All of the things mentioned below were included in my tour cost.

My private tour was arranged by Li, the manager. She picked me up at my friend's residence along with a private car/driver and another tour guide -- a university student named Skaf.

We drove about an hour out to some farming/industrial communities in the suburbs of Shanghai. We rode very nice quality mountain bikes (safety gear included) through the countryside and ended up at the entrance to Zhujiajiao, a picturesque, ancient canal town that is now a major tourist draw. We packed up the bikes, and walked around the town. We went to lunch at a restaurant, where the guides ordered local foods (yum!) after asking me if there was anything I couldn't or wouldn't eat. After lunch we meandered through charming little streets among canals and bridges, taking photos and popping into shops as I wanted. We took a nice boat ride (similar to a gondola) through the town as well.

Li and Skaf were really great guides and their English was perfect. They were very nice and didn't mind me asking a million questions. We had great conversation about life in different parts of the world.

Due to my circumstances of being on my own, the tour was a little pricey, but I thought it was fair and reasonable for what I got from it. I was very well taken care of by a professional staff and I got to dictate the pace of the day (I stop a lot to take photos). I would highly recommend China Cycle Tours to others. If I make it back to China I would seriously consider asking them to arrange a guided multi-day tour to Guilin or somewhere similar.

Although it may seem intimidating to ride a bike on the streets of Shanghai with the crazy drivers who don't seem to understand the meaning of a red light, this was one of our most enjoyable experiences of our time in the city. It is completely safe and actually, I was expecting the pace to be a little more brisk (but it was very relaxing regardless).

I would recommend doing this towards the beginning of the trip, because it gives you an excellent overview of the city layout, how far attractions are from one another, and a good idea of what you may want to revisit and what you may want to skip. Our guide was very flexible and stopped at a couple locations we asked about that were not on the list.

The best part was biking through the tree-lined streets of the former French Concession area which was a serene experience I will never forget - observing the juxtaposition of Western and Eastern influences with a cool breeze blowing in my face - it was transcendent.

My only other piece of advice is to stick with one of the half day tours. It was the perfect amount of time, although maybe we could have went a little longer; but an entire day seemed like it has the potential to be overwhelming.

After reading lots of good things about this trip, I was not disappointed. Both Jimmy and Li were outstanding in their professionalism and friendlyness. We had a great tour and saw lots of amazing sights of Shanghai. Jimmy was always aware of us and our needs and that made us feel at ease. The streets and great when you get right down and dirty riding with the locals and bikes!!
Once again thanks Jimmy for the experience

I did two bike tours: a Saturday night tour, to enjoy the lights of Shanghai, and a tour on Sunday afternoon to see some other parts of the city. Both times I had excellent guides (Jimmy and Stella on Saturday night, Stella and Melody on Sunday afternoon), who made me feel very welcome and seemed to have a good time themselves as well.

Because I was the only customer, the Sunday trip was adjusted a bit so that we did not visit the places I had already seen the night before.

Even though it rained cats and dogs on Saturday night, we still had a great time - we just put a poncho on and braved the weather. Stella took lots of pictures which were generously shared, so I actually have photos with myself in them (more fun to look at for people back home!).

We went to a few tourist areas (of course, since those are the famous sites), and both times Stella pointed out all the various interesting Chinese items for sale, but it was not to pressure you to buy them, but genuinely to explain some of the crafts and food specific to the country/region. I really enjoyed the browsing/window shopping.

In a nut shell: a great way to see the city in a fairly short period of time. Because of the flat terrain, it was not physically strenuous. Definitely recommended!

If you don't have much time in Shanghai and/or would like a unique and varied experience in this massive city, a CCT bicycle tour is an absolute must. Book and organise the tour before you even arrive in China! It can't be easier! A truly professional outfit. My partner and I did a half day tour commencing in the afternoon and ending with a delicious dinner. Lovely! Our guide, Ashaleigh, was patient (when I continually stopped to take pictures), fun and informative. Her English was great and she was very engaging. We ended up being the only two on the tour that day which was such a treat for us. She took us to see and ride through so many points of interest and she certainly took into consideration our expectations/requests. It was fantastic! The bird/pet market was one of many highlights as was riding through the French Quarter on the way back - the cool night breeze in your face (a welcomed change to the warmth of the day). The bikes were so comfortable and of great quality. At no stage of the tour did I ever fear for my safety or question my fitness. You do not have to be fit to do this tour...just enthusiastic!

We took the half day tour through Old Shanghai. Our guide was Jimmy, who was great. He was knowledgable about the areas and gave us insight into the typical life of a Shanghai resident. For our tastes, there was way too much shopping, but there was no pressure to buy and we quickly skimmed over those portions (to be clear, we just don't buy many things when we travel, but if you like to souvenir shop, you will enjoy this and your guide can help you negotiate). If I did the tour again, I would personally request less shopping stops and more time just biking in the laneways/streets of Shanghai. We never felt in danger - Jimmy was always watching out for us, and it was fun to be part of the hustle and bustle of busy Shanghai streets. Neither my husband nor I are avid (or even regular) bike riders, but we found the flat streets of Shanghai very easy to cycle. Next time I would do the longer tour. Thanks to Jimmy for giving us such a great and unique experience during our visit to Shanghai.

Was in Shanghai on a business trip that extended over a weekend and needed something fun to do that will combine fun, exercise, culture, site seeing and shopping. So went online to search for a bicycle rental store and found this China Cycle Tours. Called them and arranged for a private bicycle tour over the phone with short notice. Booking was easy and fast. They texted me directions immediately and cost was reasonable too for a private tour. Obviously you need good bicycle handling skills to navigate the traffic, pedestrians, other bicycles and whatever gets thrown at you. Not for the light harted or if you are concerned about pollution. I'm an avid Mountain Biker and enjoyed the adrenaline of riding a bike in the middle of traffic. I got a private guide, very nice girl. We meet at a hotel lobby in the French Concession close to a Metro station. Walked a block or two and to a small alleyway where they had the bikes. Bikes are nothing fancy, a typical city bike that does the job. Helmets are not mandatory..Overall we did close to 10 miles in 3.5 hours and toured the main city sites and went to places I wouldnt have seen on a car or walking. Highly recommend if you are up for the challenge. Honestly it was the highlight of my trip. fun...fun..fun...

I did a bicycle tour in Beijing a few days before and had a great time, so I booked a tour in Shanghai. It was also a great experience. The tour company is very organized. It was very easy to find the meeting point. We tested out our bikes, got a helmet (if we wanted one--I chose to use one) and then were off on our ride. I thought Shanghai would be less perilous navigating the streets than Beijing, but I actually found Shanghai a bit more chaotic. But since I had three hours of practice in Beijing, I wasn't nervous. A few nice things: they had two guides (wonderful Stella and David)--Stella led, and David "swept" behind, making sure we didn't fall behind. What was also nice is that there were a few times we got off the bikes, locked them together, and then toured the city on foot. So it was a nice break from time to time. We ended the tour right on time, which was appreciated because I was a bit tired by the end. I would 100% recommend this tour to anyone looking to experience Shanghai the local way and see some really interesting areas of town!

I absolutely loved this tour, highly recommended because you get to see the real Shanghai with an awesome tour guide. First off, not only is the guide very knowledgable but they are extremely professional and personable. For me, a smile and a personality go a long way. Let's not forget the best part...the price. Very reasonable for a half-day or full day bike ride through the city. in USD it is about 30$ for a half day.
This guide took me to the best places to get food, where to buy reasonably priced souvenirs, best sightseeing in Shanghai, and of course to the birthplace of Chinese communism. How many people can say they've seen that? You do this all on a bike, which is the best part. I enjoyed this tour immensely and I am sure if you book with them you will too.

We booked our tour after seeing good reviews of China Cycle Tours on TripAdvisor. Little did I know that I would have quite a few skiing injuries by the time we got to Shanghai. Nevertheless we really wanted this different experience of Shanghai. We were a bit apprehensive as we are seniors more used to casual weekend cycling on bike paths and in parks. But there was nothing to worry about. The bikes were easily height adjustable and provided with helmets and baskets. Our guide Stella steered us confidently through the traffic and side streets, to markets and museums, and to a dumpling place for lunch. There was no pressure on us to finish by the appointed hour and we could have gone on all day. We had the best time. Definitely recommended.
