We had been living in Shanghai for the past few months before we decided to try the food tour, and were both excited and hesitant to hear it would be taking place in the district where we were staying. We were excited to hopefully find new places nearby, but also worried that we’d already have eaten at some of their suggestions. Thankfully we were wrong! Each place they took us to was completely new to us and had excellent food.
Three things set this tour apart for us: The access, the unknown locations, and the personal touches.
First: the access. Since they have been doing this a long time, they’ve established some great relationships with various food vendors and owners all over the city. That allows them to extend unique experiences to their guests when on the food tour. For example, not only could we eat some of the best xiao long bao in Shanghai, we also got to go into the kitchen and get a first-hand lesson from the chef on how to wrap them! (Spoiler: it’s harder than it looks) Their connections also allowed us to eat at a few places that were normally closed during the time we went, which meant we had the whole place to ourselves. Since many of these small places only have seating for about four people and most crowds have to eat while standing, this made a huge difference.
Second, the locations. I could live in Shanghai for a decade and probably not have tried (or even found) some of the places they took us to. One dessert maker only opens at night, and has just a tiny little sign out front, yet makes the best coconut mango custard you’ll ever try. Lost Plate spends a lot of time combing the city to find neat little hidden gems like this and it shows.
Third, the personal touches. Our tour guide was so warm and friendly to us throughout the night, and even went out of her way to make sure we had an extra special experience since we were celebrating a birthday. We felt they really went above and beyond to ensure we had a great experience. We’d highly recommend it!

Relaxed and entertaining walking and eating tour of the French Concession area of Shanghai. Our guide Abbey was amazing and always had a story to tell whilst we were chowing down on dumplings, noodle soup, pork, stir fry and local beers and finished off with an amazing backstreet “broom cupboard” dessert restaurant that served outrageously good mango. Highly recommend this tour

I recently won a tour with Lost Plate and was excited to try it out. Since there aren’t many tours happening now I decided to round up a group of friends and colleagues to go with me.
Other than my wife (who is Chinese) the group was all expats who have lived in China for sometime.
Even though we all had some experience with Shanghai and Shanghai food we still found the tour very interesting and fun. We made several stops at some “off the beaten path” locations that specialized in different local foods. The food was great, the beer was plentiful, and our guide Abby was very knowledgeable and entertaining.
This tour would be great for visitors and guests to Shanghai as it gives you a nice overview of many different types of food and let’s you have a good and interesting evening without how to do the planning. Even for someone who is familiar with Shanghai I would bet you will learn something, try something new, and explore some restaurants and neighborhoods you are not familiar with.
The Lost Plate organization was very easy to work with and well organized, and the tour was very well planned. Highly recommended.

My parents recently visited China and I had to take them on a Lost Plate food tour. This was my 3rd tour with Lost Plate (Chengdu and Beijing) and my parent’s first food tour. Unfortunately I was left disappointed by the tour we went on in Shanghai.
Let me start with the positives. Abby the tour guide was super friendly and informative about Shanghai. She was really enthusiastic about the tour and the city. The dumpling restaurant we visited, which was the first stop was really good. The third stop was a noodle restaurant, which was also decent.
Now sadly the rest of the food was average. The local Shanghai style restaurant was a huge let down. Most people in the group barely touched the food in the restaurant. This was also one of the only restaurants that was completely empty of patrons too, which seemed odd compared to my past experiences. At the same time I thought the food was poor at this location. Also the beer did not feel unlimited like in past tours. Anytime someone wanted a beer, Abby had to go and find some to buy. It seemed a bit inconvenient compared to the other Lost Plate tours I’ve been on. There also was no beer koozie for the cans during the tour (which I actually missed from my previous tours). My last issue was the tour group size, it was massive at 11 people. 7 to 8 people would have been a more manageable tour size, especially when two of the restaurants almost didn't have enough seats for everyone.
Overall I was disappointed by the experience in Shanghai. I loved the two previous tours I went on with Lost Plate, but the Shanghai tour just didn’t live up to my past experience.

Hi Lindsay! We would like to give our sincere apology as you did not fully enjoy the tour. We take feedback very seriously and wish you had contacted us sooner directly with your comments. I would like to respond to the concerns you have expressed in the review, and sincerely hope that you could give another chance.
Firstly, we would like to apologize for the coozie issue. We always keep good track of our coozie stock, but that time we ran out of stock and the delivery took longer than expected. We have improved our logistics system to make sure it won’t happen again.
Moreover, we are sorry that you did not feel satisfied with the drinks. On some of our tours in other cities, more drinks can be stored on the tuk tuk and carried around. However, since the Shanghai tour is by walk (tuk tuks are banned in most areas in the city due to stricter transportation regulation), our guides always carry drinks with them and fill the stock at convenience stores along the way. We are really sorry that you did not fully enjoy the experience. Your feedback is really important to us, and we have adjusted the route to make sure we have easier access to convenience stores.
At Lost Plate we spend lots of time combing each city to find authentic local eateries, to serve the goal of bring our guests to the best local food. We are sorry to hear that the Shanghai local dish restaurant did not live up to your expectation. The restaurant is popular among the local neighbors for its fresh ingredients and delicate cooking style, and is usually packed with families and friends from nearby communities during meal times. Shanghai people normally have their meals quite early (around 6pm), so by the time we arrive at the restaurant, most customers would have finished their meals. It was also a Monday on the day of your tour, so it is likely that most neighbors chose to have a fast, workday-style dinner at home instead of a sit-down, semi-formal style dinner. Their signature dishes such as Braised Pork Belly and Moonlight over Lotus Pond are many guests’ favorites. We always want to make sure that our guests are satisfied with the food we sampled on the tour, and we are very sorry that we missed the mark with you. We highly value your feedback and will work with the restaurant to improve the dish flavor.
We apologize again and hope that you could give us another chance, and will work hard to make sure that you have a wonderful experience on your next tour. We look forward to hearing from you!

You must try this! One of our best tours, ever - just wish we'd known about Lost Plate before this most recent visit to Shanghai. Our guide took us to 6-7 different small restaurants in the French Concession area, each with its own specialty, none of which we would have found on our own. We feasted on delicious noodles, flatbreads, a special custardy dessert, and tasted several varieties of local beer. At one stop we learned how soup dumplings are prepared, got a chance to try making them, and enjoyed the final product. Don't count the calories: on this 4-hour tour we walked for 2+ hours. I'll look for Lost Plate tours if/when we visit their other locations.

Hi MariaR13267, your review made us smile... it is so nice to know that you enjoyed the dumpling-making mini-class! Such hand-on cultural experience is always unforgettable. Not to mention the variety of food and drinks you tried along the tour! We believe one of the best ways to learn about the city is through its food ;) We definitely look forward to eating with you again soon!

Christmas Day and we wanted something different to a typical Uk Christmas Dinner - we weren't disappointed. We joined 3 others in the pouring rain for the three hour tour. It took in six different eating places ranging from restaurants to street vendors and even the front room of a house which barely seated the group. My two favourite dishes were lotus root soup with boiled egg and a dessert of coconut, sago, mango topped with pomelo made freshly while we were seated.

We recently went on the Street Food tour. Our guide Abby was very knowledgable, giving us lots of insights into the making of traditional food. One of our group was vegetarian and was given alternatives at all venues. We would highly recommend this tour.

My husband and I booked the local food tour for a Saturday night in Shanghai. Our guide was Abby - she was so passionate about the food and Shanghai! We visited at least six places, each with something new and delicious to try. Some of the best foods were from little holes in the wall. Our tour had only four people, including us, so we got the chance to have some good conversations with other travelers. Abby was charming and very knowledgeable - she’s a little ray of sunshine! The evening was a delight!

And you are absolutely right that our tour shows you a different side of Shanghai that you would otherwise not have stumbled upon by yourself. ;)
We hope to eat with you again next time!

My wife and I had a great food tour with Cora. We ate lots of tasty things and because we walked around we were able to get our bearings in Shanghai and ended up coming back to the same area several times.
We even happened upon the dessert stand that sells these amazing marshmallow treats that we ate on the tour. Cora was very fun and knowledgeable. She gave us great ideas of other activities we could do during our stay as well.
We love Lost Plate tours and hope they add one to Guangzhou very soon!

Yep - I registered as a single participant, and joined a mixed group of people. It was great fun comparing our travel stories. Metro stop was easy to get to (can't remember it, but they advised when I booked - it was in the French Concession area, quite central).

I never asked that from the tour guide... but Nick is very very helpful and accommodating to address a guest with mobility aids. And even though the places we've been are small, and one restaurant has a second floor, I'm sure things can work out.
