About
Eat like a local on this Shanghai late-night food tour, visiting off-the-path eateries, street barbecues, and a night market. Let your guide handle navigation as you sample several street-food bites—enough for dinner. Dishes you taste may include soup dumplings, lamb skewers, and boiled crayfish, washed down by local craft beer. Your guide also tells you about the food, history, and culture of the former French Concession.

What to expect
Greet your guide and group at a former French Concession subway station, and stroll towards the Xintiandi area. Your first stop is an Uyghur restaurant for hand-pulled noodles, followed by a local eatery for the essential “xiaolongbao” soup dumplings. Continue to Zhaozhou Road street food bazaar, frequented by Anthony Bourdain, and see the border where French-style apartments give way to old stone “shikumen” houses. Try local dishes at three separate eateries as you learn how locals live and eat. Along the way, cleanse your palate with craft beer and enjoy your guide’s insights into Shanghai’s foodie culture and traditions. Your tour finishes in the former French Concession: Just ask your guide if you need directions to the subway or a taxi.

Lu did an excellent job curating the tour for us. We anticipated to be a part of a group but we got lucky and it became a private tour. Overall, we had about more than 15 different types of dishes and food, including local beer and wine.

What made this tour so unique are; 1) Its later than usual so you missed the crowd and you'll see different types of crowd at night. 2) the walking route was very enlightening, interesting, and educational, 3) Lu was such a great guide that it really felt like we were friends hanging out, going out for restaurant hopping, chit chatting about everything without judgment, 4) you really feel immersed with the locals.

I must warn that some places could be a little too local for some that would not be suitable for the weaker stomach. But if you want to feel experience some true food tour "after hours", this tour is recommended.

My partner and I had a fantastic night with Lu who introduced us to local dishes and eateries. He was very knowledgeable about the history of the area and was very happy to answer any questions we had. We would definitely recommend this tour to anyone visiting shanghai!

We had a great time, our guide Jim was just amazing! Started with drinks at a bar in the former French Concession. Since it was the Mid Autumn Festival, Jim brought us mooncakes from....KFC?! We were skeptical, but very pleasantly surprised at how delicious they were (we liked them so much, we looked for & found them at a KFC in Beijing later in our trip). Jim then took us to a tiny mom & pop shop for a Shanghai specialty: fried scallion noodles, served with a selection of other side dishes and spices mixed in...wow, so different and SO good. This was my favorite dish of the tour. We had a tea tasting with xiaolongbao and other local dishes, fresh pomegranate juice and Chinese dates from a street vendor, more dumplings and Chinese doughnuts at another stop, and then finished at a small microbrewery. Jim is very friendly and knowledgeable about Shanghai’s food scene. The only comment/suggestion: info about the meeting place for the start of the tour should be communicated more clearly. We waited inside the subway station and would have missed our tour if we hadn’t happened to check outside the station one last time. The food on this tour more than made up for this small hiccup. Highly recommended!

What a great experience! Jim is knowledgeable, passionate and he led us to a series of joints more and more adventurous and secretive, where we would never have ventured on our own but that proved to be interesting, special and in some cases, magical. It was like having a friend guiding you through his hometown, making you try many different dishes and places and talking to you about the culture and the history in a very knowledgeable and fascinating way. A real treat - thank you!

I really can't recommend this tour enough. If you really want to experience the amazing food scene in Shanghai then I urge you to join Jim on one of his fantastic tours. Reasonably priced and very informative, Jim explains the history or the city and the food that the city is famous for. You would not find any of the places he takes you to in a million years, so this really is the best way to try authentic Chinese food. I had a great Swedish couple on my tour and together we had great fun, enjoying a few beers and some of the local spirit Baju along the way. Jim's English is very good and he has a great sense of humour. If you do one thing in Shanghai, do this.

We very much enjoyed our 3 hour tour with Federica. She gave us a good sense of history of the neighborhoods that we visited, was very attentive, and presented us with amazing unique food places of the 'real" Shanghai. Definitely of-the-beaten-track experience that we would recommend. A tea ceremony was great!!!

We had a tour with just 4 people so it was a small and intimate sort of group. Maggie was very friendly and so knowledgeable about about the area and all of the food that we tried. She was also accommodating to my girlfriend who does not eat pork which was a bonus. Very good for those who want to really find real local eateries and discover some of the older areas of central Shanghai. Come hungry and have good shoes since you do walk a good distance. We both had a great time, enjoyed all of the stops and would come back again!

It was a fun evening with Jim and another three friends. This tour is so well organised that we didn't waste any time in queuing or struggle on the menu. Jim picked the best options for us according to each one's preference. We went to 6 different types of dining place, from the local shengjianbao to stylish draft beer house, street food and tea house with home made hot pot! I really enjoyed the evening and I would highly recommend this to people who wish to experience local shanghai authentic food with a tight schedule.

Our tour-guide had many interesting pieces of information to share about Shanghai and the French Concession. The places we went to were quirky, underground and not mainstream, which I appreciated. The tour-guide is a creative, intelligent and educated young man, very cheerful and kept things rolling along beautifully. I highly recommend this late night tour - lots of fun.

I spent a lot of my time in China not knowing what I was eating, so this tour was excellent because I got to learn and ask all the questions. I also learned about how different food stalls operate - how you order and pay and all that. Lu was awesome guide - he tailors the experience to you and what you want to try, rather than taking you on a fixed route. He also tells you a lot about the area in general, not just the food related aspects. Going late and night is great because the streets are so much less crowded. This was one of the best tours I did in Shanghai. Tons of fun!
