Overview

Shanghai is a vibrant port city in China, one of the world’s most fashionable, cutting-edge cities. But the history-filled hub is also home to countless architectural relics that are under threat from modern development. During this unique walking tour of Old Shanghai, you’ll bypass the tourist track and get an insider’s view of the city’s hidden landmarks that are fast disappearing, from secret gardens to authentic local markets.

What to Expect

Shanghai is perhaps best known for its sleek towers, cutting-edge waterfront, and fashionable shops. But the innovative city is also home to a picturesque Old Town that is in danger of disappearing.

During this unique guided stroll through Old Shanghai’s hidden historical attractions, you’ll get an insider’s peek at off-the-beaten-track landmarks that are not likely to survive the city’s newest development projects. Take a walk through Shanghai’s turbulent history as your guide leads you deep into the lanes and back alleys that still thrive in the shadow of skyscrapers.

You’ll see under-the-radar sights that are inaccessible to other visitors, including ancient carvings and a Qing-era private garden that is closed to the public. Other rare and informative stops include some of the city’s oldest private houses, a 14th-century temple dedicated to Confucius, and the former 500-year-old residence of a famous Chinese scholar. Wander through Mahjong markets and savory food stalls as you go behind the scenes to discover the heart of the traditional city quarters.

EXCELLENT TOUR, BUT NOT FOR BORRED 12 YEAR CHILDREN

Our guide Fei Fei, speacks very good English,(for china standards) she is relaxed, patient, and smilling. The tour was on time with a nice car to the old Shanhai.Very interesting to see the evolution of the housing and the everyday life of ordinary people. Reccomended.
