- ABeaurain0 contributionsA MUST do in Shanghai!!! (Ask for Jim)Where do I start! Our food tour in Shanghai with Jim was absolutely out of this world amazing. This was our very first experience after stepping off the airplane into China, and it set a high standard for the rest of our trip! The tour was incredibly interesting, and Jim went above and beyond to share extra details about the food and culture. The variety and quality of the dishes were exceptional—we enjoyed them so much that we returned to a couple of the restaurants in the following days! This experience truly made our visit to Shanghai unforgettable. Highly recommend!Written March 19, 2025

- W1947NBkirstenr0 contributionsLovely host, delicious foodJade was a fabulous host! We ended up being the only 2 people on the tour and it was very fun. She took us to 4 food places and a fun bar as well as a stop for local fruit. They were all super tasty dishes. At the fruit place she even let us pick out some special ones like the white strawberries. We also took a nice route through a park and sky bridge where she took nice photos for us. Would highly recommend as a good intro into all sorts of Chinese dishes from good restaurants!Written March 16, 2025

- carolinefU5103AU0 contributionsExcellent Food TourWe had an excellent food tour with Jade and Rebekah, including amazing noodles in a tiny shop, a lesson in tea drinking with four different types of traditional tea, some fantastic seasonal fruit including white strawberries and finishing with 7 different types of dumplings in two restaurants. Our group was interesting and friendly and the walk took us through the old French quarter of Shanghai. Our guides took great care of us, procuring extras like barbecued lamb and roasted duck, beers and soft drinks and bathroom stops when needed. It was a great way to get to know Shanghai, visit some restaurants I would never have found myself, and make some new friends. Highly recommended.Written March 8, 2025
- baronm1130 contributionsAmazing TourOur guide Helen was amazing. All the food she took us to were really good. The food was varied and we were given cultural information about each dish. She was very considerate about what each person could eat and even helped me find a bathroom late at night when the options were thin. Would definitely have her again if given the opportunity.Written March 8, 2025

We went on this tour in March with my friend and I wholeheartedly recommend it. First we tried some local Shanghai dessert shops and bakeries with Jim and finished with tea tasting. All the while we talked about Chinese history and life in general, Jim really helped us bridge the gap between Chinese culture and ours.

Highly recommended tour to all those who want to see and experience a more authentic Shanghai and outside the tourist circuit. Jim is very knowledgeable and a very pleasant and nice Guide. In addition to trying so many foods and drinks, he gave us much appreciated advice. He also gave us several pills of local history and culture that are hardly found online. Excellent choice for an afternoon in Shanghai and I couldn't have spent it in better company;-) Not only are the desserts nice, but the guide, Jim, shares all his knowledge and provides explanations that make the tour worthwhile. In addition, a very nice tea tasting at the end. I highly recommend!
Do not hesitate to also look at the other tours organized by Shanghai Foodie, I had a wonderful evening with their "food tour in the French concession".

I think this is a good tour for people who find the obvious tourist attractions boring. It was better because it wasn’t a tour with many people rushing around! I can comfortably ask questions and I think I will have very good memories of taking a leisurely walk from downtown to a quiet neighborhood. The guide was also very friendly.

I had an excellent time with this tour and I would gladly recommend it to anyone looking for something to do that's a little off the beaten path. The meeting place is by one of the more popular metro stations so finding it was no problem, even for someone with little understanding of Chinese. The first thing Jim asked was whether I had any dietary concerns and then we were on our way. We went to several places and tried several different kinds of desserts, and finished up with a traditional tea session. Jim was very knowledgeable about the foods and the places we were visiting, as well as the city in general. He was willing to answer any questions that I had, even the silly ones and we ended up having some very interesting discussions. Definitely the best part for me was the tea shop, it felt so quiet and relaxed compared to the bustle going on just a few streets away. If you're planning a trip to Shanghai and you have a few hours to spare, I can definitely recommend this tour, especially if you've seen some of the bigger tourist areas and are looking for a break from all that craziness. I'll definitely book another tour with this company the next time I end up in Shanghai!

This was an excellent tour which I would highly recommend!
Jim, our tour guide, was really friendly, fun and knowledgeable about local tea and desserts, and also Chinese culture. He provided us with lots of information but also took the time to ask us questions.
We sampled some very delicious tea and cakes, I am vegetarian and can be quite a fussy eater at times but I honestly enjoyed everything that was offered and was very full after the tour! Jim asked us at the beginning of the tour if we had any dietary needs, thus making sure he knew about what we could eat and not eat.
The places that we went to on the tour were really nice and the staff who worked there were really friendly and interested in us. I particularly liked that Jim took us places that we, as visitors to Shanghai, would never be able to find on our own. Now that we know about these bakeries etc, we will be sure to visit again.
Visiting the traditional tea house was my personal highlight of the tour, it was very relaxing to sit and chat and to sample nice teas! The lady that worked there did not speak any English, however was very friendly and welcoming. I would love to visit her again.
We had some really interesting discussions with Jim and he was able to give us lots of advice in regards to living in China, as we are non-Chinese and have recently moved here.
I would 100% recommend this tour. We are keen to book more tours led by the Shanghai Foodie in the future!

My guide told me that this tour doesn't get much attention which is a shame because it was great! Visited several bakeries, My Tea Pink for a yummy bobo drink made with tea, walked around the Xintiandi area and also thru the old neighborhoods. In the old neighborhood stopped by a small traditional tea shop where I learned all about the various kinds of tea, how tea is fast becoming obsolete. Would definitely recommend this tour you will love it!

The highlight was the tea tasting session with everything from flowers and fruit, through to traditional, aged and violet teas. A lovely gentle and atmospheric experience and such an interesting journey for the palette!

We had an amazing time on our tour! Our guide was very friendly and knowledgeable. He took us all over, tasting delicious snacks along the way and educating us about the food, culture and history of Shanghai. We tried many desserts; fig tart, savory moon cake, Jewish cookies, cinnamon rolls, smoothies and more. We sampled a variety of wonderful fresh fruits from a neighborhood fruit vendor, including fresh squeezed pomegranate juice. And we sat for a lovely tea session at a local tea shop. We tried a wide variety of Chinese teas. We’ve always wanted to enjoy the tea at one of these iconic neighborhood tea shops! Overall, we had a wonderful time. We had a great chat and learned a lot about the city. And we tried a wide variety of home town favorites that we might have missed otherwise. Our guide also gave us great recommendations on what to check out during our stay in Shanghai. Definitely recommend!

We tried so many foods, bubble teas, new pastries, and a variety of teas in many different locations. Wish we did this tour first so that we could go to these places again and again. Jim was a great tour guide. He kept us excited and filled us with alot of wonderful tasting foods!
