She was exceptionally thorough and knowledgeable, making our visit to the city both educational and enjoyable. Our first stop was the stunning Yu Garden, where Penny shared fascinating insights into its history and architecture. She then took us to the serene Jade Temple, providing detailed explanations of its significance and the intricacies of its design. For lunch, Penny recommended a delightful spot in the French Concession, where we savored delicious local cuisine in a charming setting. Her suggestions and expertise truly enhanced our experience, making it a memorable day in Shanghai. - lawrencec7970 contributionsOpen Your Eyes and See Old and New ShanghaiMs. Penny met me at my hotel, she helped me craft an agenda, and then we were off on a fantastic, informative, and fun tour of Shanghai. Riding the Metro and walking, I not only saw highlights of Shanghai but learned a lot of very interesting history along the way. Ms. Penny is the definition of a professional guide: knowledgeable, fun, engaging, and she taught me about using Alipay for payments and using taxis in China. I wanted to see an out-of-the-way propaganda poster museum and she not only got me there but she fully explained the nuances of the posters from pre-Maoist times until the present. This was a master class by a true, highly talented professional guide. I absolutely recommend this tour whether you know what you want to see or are looking for tips and suggestions. Ms. Penny is amazing.Written May 17, 2024
- V5677NTalext0 contributionsGreat communication with the company even on Sunday night for next day trip!We had 2 different guides from this company during our brief business trip to Shanghai. I booked my trip less than 24 hours before our arrival, for a tour on Sunday night. Kelly did a phenomenal job communicating and setting up our guides that met us at our hotel and traveled the city with us. The guides were both very personable, sophisticated, and knowledgeable and were able to show us the innermost parts of the city and culture. Money well spent!Written May 13, 2024

Highly recommended if you want to explore the city as per your interest but without language barrier and saving time while seeing the top spots. I would recommend Judy to anyone visiting Shanghai, actually China as she has great know-how about the entire country. Many thanks Judy, was my pleasureWritten May 12, 2024
- C3210JBdougl0 contributionsShort of time in Shanghai? This tour is a must! The tour with Penny, our guide, was amazing! She showed up a few minutes' early at our designated meeting spot near our hotel and took us on a 4-hour+ walking & taxi tour of the Yu Gardens and the Bund area. We spent a lot more time at the Yu Gardens, exploring everything that it had to offer including sampling the delirious Xiao Long Bao (soup dumplings). Penny was a walking encyclopedia, giving us facts about China, the Gardens and Chinese culture in general. She was super patient, allowing us to meander at our own pace, and explaining everything around wherever we were. This tour a a definite "must" if you have a limited time in Shanghai and want to see specific things. It is a custom-designed tour, so read up a bit about Shanghai so that you can decide where you want Penny to take you. If we had more time, we would have hired her again to see the other parts of Shanghai we missed. 5 stars for thsi one!Written December 28, 2023
- AiLoonY0 contributionsMost Enlightening Tour!We had an excellent tour with Penny from Shanghai Melody. Penny was very knowledgeable about the history of Shanghai and was able to provide a good overview within the few hours of our tour. We were able to get a better perspective of Shanghai and indirectly the Chinese culture through snippets shared by Penny. We will definitely recommend this tour as an excellent introduction to Shanghai.Written October 27, 2023
- Curiosity4289870 contributionsLights and History of ShanghaiExcellent tour made special by the historical information supplied by our tour guide Penny. We enjoyed a boat trip seeing the spectacular light display illuminate the old and new sights of Shanghai and walked around Yu Gardens trying some of the local cuisine while learning of the history of the city. We chose to have our tour start at 18.30 but would recommend an earlier start to enjoy some of the sights in daylight. Overall a very good experience.Written September 13, 2023
- 777carolineo0 contributionsHighly recommendedI booked this as an activity for my team to spend time together and have fun. We were not disappointed and it exceeded my expectations. We started with a market visit including buying vegetables for our meal, followed learning how to prepare and drink green tea. Seeing our meal being prepared was followed by dumpling making from scratch. There was much laughter, cooking tips shared, good food and great company. Thankyou Kelly, feifei, Shanghai mama and everyone who made it such a memorable experienceWritten July 9, 2023
- V8494SDandrewb0 contributionsA great day full of interesting ShanghaiWe had a terrific day. Kelly drew our attention to all sorts of details at YuYuan Gardens that we would have completely missed had we been on our own. She then found us some gorgeous local dumplings to sample, and later a brilliant restaurant with very local specialties we hadn't seen before, for lunch. Kelly also took us down back streets and lanes where we could engage with everything Shangai: from upmarket shops to neighbourhoods that gave us a feel for the city's workings. Along the way, we learned lots about local history and culture, and we finished at the Marriage Market, which was fascinating and buzzing. We had a great time and learned a lot about Shanghai and its people.Written July 3, 2023

Penny was absolutely wonderful. We walked thru the French Concession area and adjacent neighborhoods and learned alot about the history of China, Shanghai and the current issues facing Chinese living in Shanghai. Penny spoke excellent English and helped us plan other things he to do in Shanghai. She went out of her way to show us how to navigate the subway which turned out to be great way to get around. Overall, Penny deserved a six!!!

Penny picked me up from the hotel and took me on a phenomenal tour! She spoke perfect English and taught me so much about the history and culture of the area. We saw a varied cityscape including the fancy hotels, the shopping district, and the housing complexes. We ended at a trendy tea shop with craft tea concoctions. An absolutely amazing day!

I had 36 hours to spend in Shanghai - what to see? This tour set up my visit to this amazing city. I'd do it again. Penny met us (just 2 of us) at our hotel and took us to the old French Club (Okura Garden Hotel) to start. First a view of the French Concession expanse from the top floor with an explanation of the historical background. Then a walk through the charming streets, plane-tree lined avenues, art deco buildings. Penny bought us a tasty Chinese treat from a roadside stall. A stroll through the King Albert Apartments, a visit to the hall at the Jinjiang Hotel (was the Cathay Mansions and Grosvenor House owned by Victor Sassoon) where Nixon signed the Shanghai Communique in 1972 then to the residence of Sun Yat-sen and finally Fuxing Park and the French gardens.
Penny was a font of knowledge and talked really fast trying to give us as much as possible !! Thank you Penny.
Then she took us back to our hotel by taxi (it was dark by then) which was really helpful and kind of her.
The tour usually starts at 2.00pm but because I was only getting in from Beijing at that time they adjust to start at 3.00. Without that flexibility I would have missed it all !!

We booked the afternoon tour from Shanghai Melody. Our guide Penny Pung picked us up in our hotel at 1pm. for the 3 h tour. We went by taxi to the Old French Club, now Okura Garden Hotel for a view from the top floor, where Penny told us the fascinating history between 1850-1930. Then we started walking and Penny,a perfect English tour guide, showed us on the way the charming streets and the Art deco style architecture. We passed Cathay Mansion in Typical Art Deco style and King Albert Apartment, popularly known as Royal Garden, built by the French Catholic Church for expatriates living in Shanghai. We enjoyed a break with coffee, sticky rice and a Chinese delicacy that Penny bought us. Finally we reached Fuxing Park, thinly French style Garden in the country. A very popular place for people singing and dancing on the street. Penny explained us so many interesting things about Shanghai that we forgot the time: it was already 7 pm when Penny cold a taxi to bring us back to our hotel. It was a fantastic experience, fascinating and enjoyable and we had very pleasant conversations together. Thank you very much Penny for your fine company and for the way you made us fall in love with Shanghai, the history and the people.

Penny was great. She was knowledgeable and passionate about the area. She could put things in context and was able to adapt the tour to our interests, including our desire for insider history lessons. Penny led us to an excellent coffee stop, which I don’t think is part of her regular tour. The route was so good that I’ve led multiple people on it on my own.

I've done my share of reviews all over the world, and this tour really stood out for me and my co-travelers. Ping met us at our hotel and took us to the French Concession and the original French Park. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and flexible to showing us items we cared about. My mother in law was a child of this is area prior to 1950, and Ping helped us identify building and landmarks that her family walked by everyday. We also went to true "off the beaten path" shops and restaurants that made the day special. If you get the chance, buy the more expensive tour that includes tea tasting, its well worth it! I'd do another tour with Ping any time, and will expect to do so on my next visit.
