      A must do tour
Dvir was a fantastic guide. Extremely knowledgable and professional. The tour was fascinating and very interesting. A piece of history that everyone should learn about. Definitely the highlight of our stay in Shanghai. We were taken to different sites by comfortable vans. My husband did this tour on a previous business trip to Shanghai and was so impressed that he did it for the second time with me.

      A must do in Shanghai!
Anfisa and Dvir give a great tour filled with interesting information! The Jewish population of Shanghai is not what one normally hears about when looking into Shanghai history but it is such a worthy thing to learn about.

Informative somehow rushed but enjoyable tour that would surprised you with the history of the Jews in Shanghai
After a few emails we secured the Jewish tour for Friday 28 June 2019. Unfortunately we arrived half and hour late but nevertheless, managed to catch up due to Dvir willingness to wait for us. The tour was thoroughly researched and we tried to absorb most the information. We walked in landmarks areas were Jews lived, listened to a knowledgable account of events in the history of the Jews past and present. we visited the only Jewish Museum that illustrates the past Jewish existence in Shanghai. We loved it and enjoyed discovering the history of our people in China. It is a starting point for all who are interested.

Learn about the Jewish connection to Shanghai
This was an outstanding tour of Jewish history here. First stop, the Peace Hotel on the Bund. Then on to the Jewish quarter and Jewish Museum. A half day well spent.

Kosher meals, Very helpful friendly staff
There's a wonderful kosher cafe, serves great Shabat meals, and I highly suggest anyone look them uppon the internet to see what they have on offer regarding ie: there's plenty of courses on offer for patrents and children, Jewish learning for example: Hebrew classes to help anyone brush up on their everyday Hebrew langrage. There's loads to see and do have a look today!! PS the staff were very helpful and served their customers quickly and with a smile too. I love it there, will definitely return

Amazing Tour and experience with Dvir
I went on the half day tour with Dvir in March 2019 and I loved the tour. Dvir is a wealth of information and he is clearly passionate about the story and giving the tour. Even though it was a half day tour, the time went by quickly as the story was so interesting. I did not know about the Jewish history of Shanghai before this tour. I am very happy that I was able to go on the tour as it was a unique way to see parts of Shanghai that I would not have originally seen on my own. I also learned a great deal of history of the city and about the Jewish refugees who spent time in Shanghai during World War !!. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone interested in learning more about the city and its history. This is a unique experience that I did not anticipate when visiting Shanghai, This Tour included trip to the Huoshan Road and Zhoushan Road, The former site of the Jewish Joint Division Committee (JDC), Huoshan Park, and the Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum, which includes the Former Ohel Moshe Synagogue. The transportation is very good and we felt in great hands from the beginning to the end. I would recommend bringing water and wearing a comfortable pair of walking shoes.

A remarkable historian with an incredible story to tell
It was a treat having Dvir guide me through the Jewish history of Shanghai. Although it is a complex story, his ability to explain the timeline and events, brought to life a rich and remarkable culture. It is not possible to gain even a fraction of the knowledge on one’s own. After the tour, I felt as though I had learnt a lot, seen a fortune and had a clear understanding of the Jewish history of Shanghai. Dvir’s tour is an absolute must if one is interested in this chapter of history.

      Influence of Jews in Shanghai
I was fortunate enough to be in a tour group led by Dvir Bar-Gal who took us through the history of Jews in shanghai. This is my email to him; Thank you so much for your very informative tour on Friday. I found it fascinating. I really had no concept that much of then establishment of Shanghai owed so much to some terribly enterprising people of the faith. The story of the fleeing Jewish refugees finding sanctuary in Shanghai was also a story I was unfamiliar with. Surely there’s a good book and / or flick in some of these wonderful human interest stories. I’ll be looking for more reference material to expand my understanding of the Jews in the Far East. Great story and well worth a couple of hours to hear and see the story and history.

      Agree with all the others!
This 4-5 tour with Dvir Bar-Gal was fantastic. He is extremely knowledgeable about the subject matter, and he presents it in an enthusiastic and entertaining way that makes the history memorable. The tour is well organized, with plenty of breaks to sit down or have a drink of water. If anything, I would have liked more time at the Jewish Refugees Museum which was very interesting. Shanghai has a fascinating Jewish history, so anyone interested in learning more about it should take advantage of this tour.

      History Comes to Life
My husband and I usually travel independently but there are times when an outstanding guide can show you places you otherwise wouldn't see and, if you're lucky, that guide can also bring history to life. Dvir is that guide and his tour is not to be missed. The most memorable part of the tour for me was when we were brought into one of the homes that was shared by refugee families. Standing in the tiny kitchen where the families worked together, walking the hallways of the house and sitting in the family room evoked images of the families living in a foreign land and planning their future. The memories of that house still move me and I'm grateful I was able to be there. You will also learn about Dr. Ho, a gentleman who was influenced the lives of thousands of people, perhaps even your own.

      History Lesson
Dvir was amazing - his journey alone is worth joining the tour - trying to preserve the Jewish story/plight and uncovering the graves of the immigrants - wow. The tour itself, with its historical perspective, gives you an in-depth understanding of the Jewish plight in Shanghai - when they came, why the came, how they lived - an absolutely wonderful journey and an absolute must for anybody with an interest in Jewish history, as well as an interest in how Shanghai had developed since the late 1800’s.

A Moment in History of Hope.
Once in a while you meet a person that is emerged in historical values and facts that you wonder if he was part of that historical moment . Dvir is such a person . He took us back to 3 periods that Jewish persons seeked refuge in Shanghai .during the last century. Next to that he has been looking after their heritage . Or rather through investigated journalism tracking and tracing grave stones that vanished in past times. Next to the past experience , the present with Dvir and his wife Anfisa . For us an other highlight exploring with them the French concession and modern Shanghai . Visit Shanghai ? Contact Dvir and Anfisa the way to experience Shanghai . frank H.

      fabulous tour guides
We ended up taking two tours with this company because the Jewish tour was so great. Dvir (the Israeli owner) contextualizes the whole history of Shanghai in a fascinating opening of about 20 minutes, complete with iPad photos to compliment your actual experience -- so you can see how things looked right where you are standing before the cultural revolution, before WW2, in the 1800's, etc...it was a phenomenal way to start our time in Shanghai. And then we proceeded to unreel the layers of Jewish life over its 3 waves of immigration to Shanghai. Diva's personal stories and anecdotes about people came to Shanghai were fantastic -- the Iraqi jews who built the Bundt, the Russians fleeing persecution later, and finally people fleeing the holocaust who were welcomed by Shanghai's completely open door. the next day we took a tour on the markets in shanghai and old and new neighborhoods -- equally fascinating with a fabulous guide named Anfisa. These are 2 of the best tours i have ever taken in my life and we have travelled a lot. Their access to the nooks and crannies and their ability to make very complex aspects of history all fall into place, are truly a gift.

A must see - who knew?
When other countries turned them away, China allowed thousands of European Jews to enter and live peacefully, escaping the horrors of WWII Europe. But there is MUCH more to the Jewish history of shanghai than just those years and our half day with Dvir scratched the surface of that rich and important chronicle. Dvir knows his stuff and we enjoyed hearing about all the various influences on life in shanghai, from Jewish involvement in the building of the city to the WWII period, to post war. Absolutely fascinating. His personal experiences and anecdotes added great flavor. Quite glad we took this tour. I would have enjoyed a bit more about the post war period and would gladly have enjoyed a full day tour seeing more of the city. A side note: ask Dvir about his special project. An amazing endeavor worthy of note. The tour was well worth the small fee.

We booked the day prior, which was not a good idea (almost didn't get a chance to be a part of something really spacial). Arriving late meant we played catch up for the next few minutes, (we missed out)!
This tour is a must, an easy walk and small busses were on site when required.
With a few Australians, USA and a couple from South Africa whose father had lived in the area during the war made it even more poignant. This man's house was still there, we stood outside imbuing the fascinating story that Dvir wove. All on the tour felt such empathy being on the tour with a child of someone who lived there, surviving to make a new his life. What an honor to be a part of this.

People from many countries and from various backgrounds have found their way to Shanghai where they have settled for a lifetime or until they were in a position to move on. Such is the history of the small populations of Jews who have made Shanghai their home. This tour. led by Dvir is an exploration of three waves of Jewish families who came to Shanghai, what brought about this migration and how these people lived their lives while in Shanghai. Moving around the areas where Jews settled, Dvir is an engaging host with a wealth of knowledge entertainingly delivered and sprinkled with regular humorous remarks. This is a tour for people no matter your own background if you have in interest to find out about less than obvious groups who came to live in Shanghai. On our tour, there were two families who had relatives who had lived in Shanghai as refugees, and it was possible for them to locate the houses in which their relatives had lived. Despite the rain on our tour and no connection to the history, we found the tour engrossing in no small measure due to the style and personality of Dvir. You couldn't spend a better four hours in Shanghai!

Dvir Bar-Gal was a most knowledgeable guide. We learned so much about the Jewish history in Shanghai. We knew about the WWII community, but did not know anything about the 2 prior migrations of Jews that came from Iraq and Russia. The gravestone project, shown in the video, was so interesting and compelling. I wish we had had more time in the Jewish Museum - we were rushed and did not get to really experience the exhibits. Only other suggestion is for Dvir to speak more slowly. He has so much information to share - it's hard to absorb it all because he speaks very fast. Wonderful tour all in all - highly recommend it.

Dvir Bar-Gal has genuine passion for Tour/s of Jewish Shanghai which he's been doing for 2 decades! How much passion? Besides the amazing reviews, a true sign is the in-depth emails he sent me as a reply to my inquiry. These were not boiler-plate replies but customized full of info. And what's more amazing is that even when he realized that he'd be out of town when I'd be in Shanghai and could not accommodate me, he still was emailing me different options, none of which would make him a dime and all of which were still taking up his time! This guy is a true mensch! I'm returning to Shanghai one day just to take his tour!

A great 4 hour plus tour taking in the history of the Jews, famous Sephardi Jews who made their fortunes there and a most moving visit to where immigrants first lived. So much to absorb and take in but to see how people live today without proper sanitary conditions shocked me. Highly highly recommend this tour.

This tour is a must if you are in Shanghai! Our guide Dvir was so passionate and knowledgeable about Jewish history. Fascinating tour where we learned about Shanghai’s little-known Jewish history - from the Baghdadi Jews who arrived after the Opium War (and who built many of the buildings on Nanjing Road) to the Russian Jews who came following the Communist Revolution to the Jewish refugees who fled Europe during the time leading up to World War II... We visited the ghetto where Jewish refugees lived during World War II (including the home of one), as well as the Ohel Moshe Synagogue, etc.

Because we just got engaged, Dvir gave my fiancé and I a very special Passover Haggadah he had written in English/Chinese/Hebrew. It was so kind of him, and we will definitely be using this.

On top of a great tour, Dvir was super helpful in making sure we got to the airport in time for our flight immediately following the tour. He arranged to get our bags from the hotel during the tour and got us a taxi right after the tour concluded. Really great guy.
