- Trek385864475190 contributionsMake the most of your layover! With just a layover in Kolkata, we were super thankful to Soham for the Durga Puja tours which are the perfect way to navigate the streets and learn about the rich cultural significance of the festival and pandals, but also to experience the people, some food and craftsmanship. Soham has incredible story telling and takes care of you throughout the tour. He even accommodated for my vegan dietary requirements! If there is one thing you do in Kolkata, let it be one of Calcutta Capsule's tours.Written October 12, 2024
- 920katim0 contributionsPandal hopping at Durga pujaIt was one of the most beautiful experiences I had in Kolkata. Soham was ontime, extremely helpful and full of stories about Kolkata, history, the pandals. We could drink, eat and relax plenty of times. And mainly have not only the pandal hopping but a small visit of the craftsmen, the “behind of the scene”. Whenever I come back to Kolkata I will come back to the other walking tours of Capsule CalcuttaWritten October 12, 2024
- Melissa P0 contributionsThe chaos and peace of Calcutta! This was such an interesting tour, giving a real insight into the different parts of what makes this city tick - the pursuit of knowledge and the pursuit of business! It was an incredibly hot a humid evening and, given that we were visiting some very busy and frenetic places, Soham was always careful to make sure we felt comfortable, never rushed and always hydrated! From the market to the book stalls, the sunset rest stop and the famous coffee house, it was all great and we loved it. Do yourself a favour and take the opportunity to try (and maybe buy) some pickle, you won’t regret it! This was the second of three tours we took with Soham and we have agreed he is a wonderful tour guide - interesting, kind, funny, passionate about his city - all the things you need to be a perfect guide! He will also share some very good restaurant recommendations- advice to be followed!Written October 2, 2024
- Melissa P0 contributionsTop marks all roundThis was the third tour we took with Soham from Calcutta Capsule and, like the other two, it was wonderful. To keep things interesting and enjoyable in the unusually hot and humid weather we had is a real accomplishment, but somehow he managed! It was a treat to see the city first thing, before the madness really starts and it gave us a different view from the past few days. Soham brings a wealth of information and passion for his city and even though it was the third tour he didn’t repeat himself, meaning there was great value in booking all three. Learning about the flower market, the potters making the festival idols and all the stories that go with those, walking the bridge, taking so many different forms of transport - it was all brilliant and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend. Soham is an exceptional tour guide - conscious of your safety and sensitivities, knowledgable, funny and deeply kind.Written October 2, 2024
- ShivaniU140 contributionsGetting Up Close and Personal with KolkataUndoubtedly the best tour guide one can ask to have. Soham is well organised, punctual, eloquent, patient and incredibly passionate about his city and that comes through with all the historical and fun facts/trivia he adds to each stop on the walk. He is safety conscious and that helped me relax and take in the sights & stories that make Kolkata what it is rather than the overwhelming crowds and bustling traffic around me.He’s also a celebrity of sorts and is clearly very well respected and liked amongst the elders and community he introduces you to as you discover the city of joy on the Magic Hour Tour. Even if you are a solo traveller like I was , I highly recommend the Calcutta Capsule for the happy memories you’re sure to take home with you!Written October 1, 2024

When we ran into some hitched due to heavy rain, he quickly reframed the tour, and we thoroughly enjoyed.Written August 31, 2024
- 516oh0 contributionsAn amazing tour, probably the highlight of our time in KolkataAn extremely informative tour through Kolkata. It is a wonder through various areas of Kolkata, where you get to see how people live and work in the amazing city. The opportunity to take different forms of transport was also great as these are not things we would have done otherwise. Soham is an excellent guide - very informative and knowledgeable about Kolkata and Indian history more generally.Written August 19, 2024
- McKaylaM60 contributionsExplore Calcutta with the Best Guide Around! The Magic Hour Tour was the second tour I took with Soham, and the 5:30 meet time was BEYOND worth it. (I also did the Alleyway Food Tour, which I would also recomend to any and all visitors to the city!). This tour was a lovely complement to the other, as we got to explore a different side of the city and explore many of its different modes of transport. My favorite part of the tour was Soham's storytelling. He is such an engaging guide, and you learn so much about the city, its culture and its history! Get around him, these tours are some of the best I've ever been on.Written July 17, 2024
- RB99050 contributionsAmazing tour with varied experiences! Must do!I am so happy that we went on another tour with Soham of Calcutta Capsule! He is engaging and knowledgeable as he navigates us through the waking City of Joy. A beautiful blend of culture, experiences, history, and food! Thank you again for an amazing tour!Written May 13, 2024
- 18orlandol0 contributionsAwesome!I thoroughly enjoy this tour as I got to maneuver through the streets of Kolkata like a local. My favourite parts were jumping on local modes of transportation. Highly recommend!Written May 5, 2024
- 586swastikaj0 contributionsIn Dialogue with CalcuttaI participated in the tour with a group of seven participants from Japan, and it was definitely the best part of our stay in Calcutta. I was initially worried about language support, but Soham had both printed translations+an auto-updated online guide in Japanese which made sure that all of us could full along easily. What I really admired about this tour was how it was interwoven with personal anecdotes. While delivering historical facts with accuracy, it also beautifully brought out Soham's relationship with the city. I think this tour will give anybody who participates a chance to not only to know Calcutta better, but to dwell on their own relationships with the spaces and communities they inhabit. Thank you so much for a brilliant experience!! I hope I get to participate in the Food Tour someday soon too :)Written May 4, 2024
- 224frant0 contributionsIncredible IndiaSoham was amazing! He was so knowledgeable and passionate about Kolkata. We learned about the history of the city, the richness of the Hindu religion and tasted great food! Needless to say Soham is a great photographer too! Highly highly recommend!!Written May 4, 2024
- Venture352466076770 contributionsA MUST DO!If there was only one tour that you can take in Kolkata, GO for this! It was worth waking up to catch the 5.30am start time. Soham (your guide and soon will become your friend) is passionate about his city, and it comes out through the tour. It was wonderful to hear his take on the city as he shows you around, just as the city wakes up. He tells you about the history, points out traditional trades and immerses you in this fascinating city. This includes a tea stop, and sampling the local transport, bus, auto and there he keeps the surprises coming. He is known to vendors and sellers, and is respectful of consent and photos (which is heartwarming to see). I cannot recommend Sohan enough, you will remember this tour, I can guarantee it. He takes great photos too!!Written April 30, 2024
- patrickfZ3038EH0 contributionsSunrise TourWhat a great introduction to kolkata. Soham was a great guide, very knowledge and easy going. Everything was planned to a T and no hidden or extra costs. Also, Soham was helping me with something else which he didn't have to. So top marks overall đź‘ŚWritten April 28, 2024

We heard about Kolkata's reputation as a "foodie city" so we knew we had to try this tour. We had been wanting to eat street food in India, but we weren't really sure what was safe (and also had trouble communicating!), so this tour was perfect! We were a bit early, so Soham invited us up to the lovely rooftop patio of his parents' house while we waited for the other couple to show up. Soham took us to all the best spots in the neighbourhood where he grew up. Just be sure to pace yourself, because there was sooo much good stuff to eat! We started with chai in clay pots (the traditional way). Then we had these puffed balls with potatoes and broth inside. Next, we had a puffed rice snack mix, that I really liked, and then the best pakoras I've ever had. We got a history lesson about Bose, whose statue stood in the intersection around which the tour took place. There were some mutton dishes for meat-eaters with vegetarian substitutions for me. I liked the muglai paratha. We also had some great kathi rolls. I think we had sweets at three different places. My favourite was the rasa ghool (definitely spelling that wrong!) We ended our tour with a story of 11 footballers who resisted the British in 1912. Very cool!

I’ve done a number of food tours across many continents and hands down this is the best one I’ve ever done and I’m a tough critic!! Soham was outstanding in guiding us through the alleyways of Kolkata mixing the city’s history with the wide variety of street food. After a while I lost count of the number of food stops we made but suffice to say you won’t leave hungry or feeling like you’ve missed out on tasting the sweet and savoury food delights of this city. Soham added so many personal touches to the tour that you felt like you were being taken round the city by a friend. One of the big differences to other food tours is you get to try REAL street food that you might have been hesitant to try for fear of getting sick - these are all places locals go to and you get to eat right alongside them all in the knowledge that the food is safe. A complete added bonus was some beautiful photos Soham took of us on a SLR camera throughout the tour. These are fantastic memories of the best tour I’ve ever done!!

Wonderful tour with a great combination of going off the beaten track, learning about the interesting culture of Kolkata and indulging in yummy street food. Soham is a great & caring tour guide, who was born in the streets he was showing us (=true local). With his outstanding storytelling skills, he made the tour really entertaining, yet insightful. We regret that we couldn’t join him on a second tour and can highly recommend. Just be prepared - you get A LOT of food. Don’t make any dinner plans for the same night ;)

This food tour exceeded our expectations! Soham was the perfect guide and provided some history on the food, the vendors, and where we even walked. He was gracious enough to even help us find bug spray, bandaids, and water. He even bought us umbrellas since it happened to pour constantly for an hour. He also was very careful where we were walking and took us through some beautiful alleys that simply enhanced the experience. The food stops were well though out, starting with chai, appetizers, main dishes and then desserts. We could have as much amid each as we wanted, but I would suggest pacing yourself if you want to have everything! You can always skip a stop if you want or have one bit and move on. Soham was also a really nice and friendly person and we had a good time just with small talk as well. I highly recommend this to anyone coming to Kolkata!

I arrived in Kolkata and really wanted to try the local foods, but didn't know where to start. I decided to try a "food tour" which seemed like a perfect way to learn and taste the cuisine of Kolkata. After reading the positive reviews about Alleyway Food Tours, I went ahead and booked a tour with Soham.
What a truly wonderful experience! Soham went above and beyond to provide a truly authentic experience for all of us. He talked about each food we tried and explained the history behind it. As we were walking from place to place, he also explained each neighborhood we entered and were able to learn about that as well. I tried so many delicious foods, from various street food vendors to chicken dishes, mutton dishes, fried fish, and an assortment of excellent sweets. Soham let us try as much or as little as we liked. He patiently answered all our questions and even went an hour past schedule!
Come hungry as you will absolutely eat a lot! This was the PERFECT tour if you want to try a variety of local dishes, learn the history behind each food AND also learn about the various neighborhoods as you walk through them.
Look no further for a food tour. This is one you can't or should not miss.

I did the Alleyway Food Tour with Soham and it turned out to be one of the highlights of my stay in Kolkata. We were shown around in line of the oldest neighbourhoods of Kolkata and Soham had interesting stories to tell about the buildings and connected those stories easily with culture, history and… the next foodstall. Over there he took care everything we tried was prepared with the greatest hygiene possible, explained the dish and then let us try. During the walk he was very aware of our safety and guided us safely through the chaotic traffic of Kolkata. In total we tried 6 savouries and 4 sweet dishes. Glad he recommended us to come hungry as there was plenty of food to delight our tastebuds. As said the tour was magical. There might be Many food tours in Kolkata and I have experienced Manz of them in other cities. The Alleyway Food Tour is without doubt the best of all of them. Entertaining, Informative, safe, hygienic and extremely tasty. I can only highly recommend this tour. Soham is an absolute entertainer who knows what he is talking about. What a fabulous experience!!!! Soham, Dhanyavad!!!!

Me and my wife went for the Food Tour . Mr Soham ( our Food and Tour Guide ) was very knowledgeable with great communication skills . We visited hidden gems / eating places which were more than 100 years old . The food tasting was an eclectic mixture of both vegetarian and non vegetarian traditional Bengali cuisine . Mr Soham gave us so many information and background stories about the different alleys , shops and people of the area. Such information is not available in books and can only be transmitted by a local connoisseur whose family has for generations lived in that area. We learnt more about the Great Son Of India , Netaji Subhash Bose . We discovered the intricate relationship between Old Kolkata, Football and Development of National Freedom Conciouness against colonialism . The Mutton Curry , Fish Roll , Kathi Rolls , The Brinjal Pakoras ...were all mouth watering treats .... No tour in Kolkata can end without SWEETS ... we loved the variety of sweets we tasted and tried . Old Kolkata is like a treasure box , full of different treasures ..but to make sense of those treasures and to bask in the glow of the gems , a guide like Mr Soham is needed.

Really enjoyed this. It was so much more than a food tour. Soham was knowledgeable, thoughtful and interesting about this area of Kolkata where he grew up, and about Indian history and culture in general. At the same time as chatting and being shown the back streets in a way I would have been unable to do without a guide, I got to sample a full range of well selected and delicious street foods. I felt fully confident in his judgement and local knowledge regarding cleanliness and hygiene. Soham was careful to look after me as a guest for the time I was with him, and super helpful beforehand helping me get there by taxi. A really excellent way to begin my visit to Kolkata. I would highly recommend it to anyone as a chance to sample street food in relaxed and rewarding company on a very well planned tour.

Where does this tour start and does it offer a pick up? We are at the Elgin Fairlawn?

He picks you up outside his home which is 185/B, Raja Dinendra St, Fariapukur, Shyam Bazar, Kolkata, West Bengal 700004, India
Taxi should drop you off opposite the Lady’s entrance to Deshbsndhu Park. It’s easier to go by taxi. Just hang around there and Soham will find you. He also provides a mobile number. It’s a very short walk from there to all the local food places.
