About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- lowmillguesthouse0 contributionsThe best street food by the best guideThis food tour was a joy, from meeting Soham outside his family home to eating the ( almost) last dish in a secret place. Soham is sharing the food and the neighbourhood he grew up and still lives in and the food is amazing. The hawkers( as they are called locally) make the dishes in front of you as requested by Soham so even the panipuri is safe to eat. The onion bashed was to die for and all the dishes exceeded my expectations, food tours don’t come any better I liked it so much I bought the tee shirt !! Thank you so much for making memories Soham Ps Getting sent photos of me stuffing down food at the end was a nice touchWritten January 17, 2025
- Ngwe0010 contributionsA wonderful evening!Put your feet on the ground and join Soham for an unforgettable experience of a part of Kolkata you won't get on your own. His food/alleyway tour is underpinned by his knowledge, enthusiasm and love of his neighbourhood. When he says you should arrive hungry he wasn't joking. It's a great way to get an insight into a very old part of Kolkata. Highly recommendedWritten January 10, 2025
- gilld0010 contributionsA rewarding experience- dont miss it!We did the alleyway food tour last night and it was absolutely fantastic. A truly wonderful way to experience life in Kolkata. Soham is so knowledgeable and gives you a great history of the city, the food, the people. He doesn't overload you with information but gives a perfect balance. He is passionate about what he does which is one of the reasons that he isso successful. The food is wonderful. Make sure you arrive hungry! We adored everything we tried. We got to try local specialities we didn't know existed and we can't wait to have them again. This was by far the highlight of our 3 days in Kolkata. It is a must if you are staying in Kolkata. Make sure and book early as the word is out.Written January 10, 2025
- 469jeffm0 contributionsA neighborhood, a city, a country......and lovely food! The Alleyway Food Tour was a perfect late afternoon/early evening slice of current life (& past lives...) in a historic Kolkata residential neighborhood. Historic in the sense that it is an old neighborhood with 4th & 5th generations of the same family still living in their family's homes, a time capsule of Kolkata architecture and living. The tour starts, naturally, in front of Soham's family home. From there we wandered the neighborhood lanes & alleys learning the history and stories of this neighborhood, Kolkata and India itself. I was aware that Kolkata had formerly been the capital of India during the British Raj. And that Kolkata is the intellectual & cultural capital of India....but what that meant in historical terms, not so much. Soham gives fascinating insights into the actions of ordinary Bengalis and the not-so-ordinary Bengalis such as Subhas Bose who pushed India forward towards independence. But ultimately I came to Kolkata for the food of West Bengal.....one of the major cuisines of India that I hadn't experienced yet. Soham's selection of Bengali street food, whether from a specific vendor's street cart or a historic hole-in-the-wall, was the perfect mix of all types of savory & sweet, veg & non-veg. I couldn't pick a favorite....it was all REALLY GOOD! He has carefully selected his vendors and pays attention to hygiene protocols. (To be blunt, the day after the tour I am no worse for the wear....) Soham is extremely knowledgeable and has an easy, comfortable guiding style. Every question was welcomed and answered thoughtfully. I heartily recommend this tour to anyone.Written January 2, 2025
- mahual20210 contributionsExtremely enjoyable & informative! One hell of a food tour that we’ll be raving about for some years to come Soham was brilliant, warm and personable, extremely considerate - took all necessary hygiene precautions with thought to traveller’s sometimes delicate constitutions & very importantly, really well informed about Kolkata’s history & culture. As a Bengali returning after decades, with a group of people from different nationalities, it was impressive how the tour pleased all of usWritten December 27, 2024
- Sightsee280435115020 contributionsGreat tourWonderful walking food tour. Soham was very knowledgeable and really considerate of all participants on the tour. Really enjoyable and lots of delicious food along the way.Written December 27, 2024
- mahima3030 contributionsThe best walking tour I’ve ever been on!We had the most incredible time eating our way through the streets of Calcutta, a culinary as well as visual feast. The experience was delightfully curated, with Soham a most knowledgeable and charming guide: he opened our eyes to Calcutta’s history, culture, and the stories that have shaped the city, through the lens of food. We did this tour on our first day in Calcutta and now on our way out, still vote it as by far the best experience we had. In fact, I’d go so far as to say it is the best walking tour / food tour I’ve ever done. Would really recommend. P.S. if you’re worried about street food and food safety, don’t be - Soham ensured at every step that the preparers of the food were taking every caution, from wearing gloves to using mineral water. Our tummies were absolutely fine, apart from being really full with all the deliciousness.Written December 11, 2024
- smhely0 contributionsFun, delicious and such varietyWe loved the food tour with Soham at 4pm yesterday (our third tour with him) and ate the most delicious Bengali specialities non-stop for 3.5 hours. For someone who never eats street food, I ate everything: chicken kebabs with delicious fine onions, capsicums and spices, mutton (goat) from the city’s famous Golbari, deep fried eggplant and onion in chick pea flour, little newspaper packets of freshly puffed rice with the most delicious herbs and vegetables and a squirt of mustard oil, Indian ice cream made with date sugar (jaggery) and the prettiest cakes from a shop that has been selling cakes for generations that add up to 150 years. Even the street vendor with phuchka - tiny puffed wheat pockets (that he filled with potatoes and chillies and fresh tamarind juice) was third generation and had been selling them for 31 years. Soham managed all but 2 courses gluten free (the fish cutlet and the roll around the egg chicken kati roll) Astonishing! Usually I can’t eat anything on a food tour. The food is totally safe and hygienic. Soham had an arrangement with the charming people at the restaurants, streets stalls, shops that they wear gloves and use bottled water. What a guy. He weaves some fascinating Kolkata history into the food tour. Soham asked my husband and I what was our favourite tour? It’s so hard to pick one because each one offers such an authentic insight into one of the world’s great cities, Kolkata. Soham’s tours are expansive, mind blowing and totally delicious. With each one I had some of the greatest food I had ever eaten.Written December 7, 2024

- janfQ4068AL0 contributionsBengali BlissOur guide Soham made this tour the most incredible experience. It would not have been possible without his local knowledge snd lively stories which explain as much about the laneways, buildings and history as the delicious choices of foods. His love and passion for all things Calcutta gave heart and soul to the tour as well ss very full tummies! Highly recommend. Worth every cent.Written November 28, 2024
- denismZ2040OS0 contributionsLoved every minute of this food tourWe have been on many food tours in cities all over the world. Calcutta Capsule’s was brilliant! It is Soham’s one-man business. He grew up in Kolkota and designed the tour personally, so you get great insights and local knowledge. We peppered him with questions and it was obvious they he really knew Kolkata and its people. He was warm, friendly and helpful. The stops on the tour are well thought out and diverse. And Soham’s English is superb.Written November 21, 2024
- dis5680 contributionsAuthentic and Awesome ExperienceYou could not dream of a better host. So much local knowledge and history in addition to great food. I am coeliac and the tour was planned so everything was safe for me to eat. Incredible experience. Thanks.Written November 21, 2024
- sayasukabali0 contributionsExperience an authentic KolkotaThis was one of the best food tours we’ve been on. Soham is warm, accommodating and knowledgeable. It was a unique opportunity to explore the alleys with someone who grew up in the hood. The food was delicious and diverse. Soham’s beautifully curated tours offer an insight and depth you’d be hard pressed to find elsewhere.Written November 21, 2024
- elizabethp6320 contributionsDon't hesitate to book this tour, it's amazing!I loved the Magic Hour Tour, it is totally worth getting up early for. I was traveling solo in Kolkata and found Soham's tours through google/airbnb. My visit to Kolkata was infinitely better due to the tours ( I did both the Magic Hour Tour and the Alleyway food tour). Soham is a wonderful person who has curated an amazing tour that allows you to see Kolkata in a way you otherwise would not be able to. He takes you to the places that are important to him and his family for generations, allows you to experience the city like a local (take public transit, walk around). Can't recommend Soham highly enough!Written November 20, 2024

I am so glad I did this tour - definitely a highlight of my time in Kolkata. Soham is so passionate and knowledgable about this city and you can't help but fall in love with Kolkata afer spending a few hours with Soham.
I would never have experienced some of the things I did if I hadn't taken this tour. If you prefer to really experience a place and it's people then this is definitely for you. Soham couldn't have been a better guide, and as a solo female I felt completely safe and at ease throughout the whole tour.
We meandered through the hustle and bustle of the city, with stops for amazing food and drinks, and Soham even managed to find a space of calm and peace in the middle of all of this at a Buddhist temple - amazing.
And at the end of the tour we were able to watch the movements of the city from far above, with views far and wide.
A truly fascinating tour and one I would highly recommend to anyone visiting this city.

The tour is among the most distinctive, intimate, and meticulously planned tours I've ever joined. It's a journey into the heart of Kolkata, rich with personal stories, references to films and novels, and witty observations that can only be made by someone who's deeply in love with their city.
There will be no Victoria Memorial or your usual tourist sights and souvenir shops; instead, you will be taken from Kolkatta's tranquil college and academic quarter to the vibrant trading and merchant markets. Almost everything (aside from the Indian Coffee House and maybe the fruit market) is entirely off-limits to tourists. There will be great food, too.
I recommend the tour to anyone who wants to have a more genuine and authentic experience and get a glimpse into the life of Kolkatans throughout the decades.

Soham is such a wonderful guide! He was very helpful, flexible, and a real professional throughout the entire process (booking, the tour itself, communication, etc). He took us to places we would have never seen as a tourist on our own, and explained everything in a very passionate way including interesting trivia about the city, its culture, its history, and the country as a whole. He took great care of us, considering this was our first trip outside Europe, and was extremely helpful. He listened to all our inquires, and made us at ease from the very beginning.
In other words, we recommend this tour to anyone visiting Kolkata!

This was one of the highlights of our trip to Kolkota. It was beautifully created by Soham, a local who is passionate and knowledgeable about his city. The tour is authentic, personal, interesting, informative and intelligent, much like Soham himself. He really succeeds in showcasing his city, its contrasts, beauty and grittiness with the depth and warmth it deserves. I would highly recommend this tour for those wanting to go beyond merely scratching the surface.

This was such an interesting tour, giving a real insight into the different parts of what makes this city tick - the pursuit of knowledge and the pursuit of business!
It was an incredibly hot a humid evening and, given that we were visiting some very busy and frenetic places, Soham was always careful to make sure we felt comfortable, never rushed and always hydrated!
From the market to the book stalls, the sunset rest stop and the famous coffee house, it was all great and we loved it.
Do yourself a favour and take the opportunity to try (and maybe buy) some pickle, you won’t regret it!
This was the second of three tours we took with Soham and we have agreed he is a wonderful tour guide - interesting, kind, funny, passionate about his city - all the things you need to be a perfect guide! He will also share some very good restaurant recommendations- advice to be followed!

From start to finish Soham was just excellent. He was kind and careful for us around traffic and obstacles and showed much concern and kindness. The tour was really wonderful. We saw so many different aspects of the Bara Bazaar market area, and tried different food and drinks along the way. From the publishing/book sellers all around the university area to the markets, vegetables, clothing, etc etc we saw the colours, sites and sounds of Kolkata, definitely the City of Joy. The area is very busy and there is a real buzz of activity. We noticed how friendly and warm the local people were. They smiled and nodded and always responded to a hello from us. Soham told us that people in the area are known for their joy of life and of living a good life not necessarily a life just to make money. That was the feeling. Warmth and happiness. Soham really showed this too in all his help and guidance on the tour. Much appreciate. Highly recommended.

Last year I not only went on this tour, but all 3 of Calcutta Capsule's tours. I enjoyed them all so much that one of the first things I did when I returned to India this year was contact Soham so that I could bring my girlfriend along on the tour. It was equality fascinating the 2nd time around. Soham does an amazing job at striking the balance between providing historical and local information while keeping the tour light and extremely fun. I highly recommend this tour as well as the others offered by Soham to anyone visiting India.

Soham was the key to the city for us. His tour flowed really well. He is enthusiastic, professional, punctual, and very informative. We felt we had a very authentic experience of the street. Also an excellent photographer. We’ve done various street tours around the world. This was maybe the best.

It was my second tour with Soham (first one I did was Magic Hour which was amazing as well). The tour is nicely structured, even we covered busy areas, I didnt feel tired as we had some nice breaks. Soham loves the city and very passionate to share the taste of Kolkata with us. I highly recommend to book the tour!
