A good day in old Kolkata
A nice tour in the old Kolkata. The guide accommodated our request to see in addition the flower market and brought us to have a tea at Oberoi Grand Hotel, which actually made the tour complete and very exciting. A bustling morning in the Sunday flower market is unforgettable. Despite the heat, we managed to see a lot of things, complemented by a lot of information shared by the guide.

South Andaman: 5N 6D Port Blair, Havelock, Neil Visit
I had visited South Andamans (Port Blair, Havelock, Neil) between 26th to 31st March for 5N 6D. We spent Day 1 in Port Blair, Day 2 and 3 in Havelock, Day 4 in Neil and Day 5 in Port Blair. We flew out in Day 6. Travellers included just myself (44, F) and my 9 years old daughter. Booking of hotel and flight was done through websites for best rates and I did not go through any agent for a packaged deal. Weather was Hot. What i gathered, in Andaman, weather is always Hot. So, sunscreen, large hats and sunglasses are a must. Weather feels better if you are in shade and there’s a breeze but in direct sunlight, it feels as if the skin is burning. Avoid May end to July. If there is rain for 2-3 days, typically there is cyclone alerts. If there is any cyclone alert, ferry services get cancelled. So, travel plans get jeopardised. But temperature-wise, it’s similarly hot and humid all through the year. Writing this review purely based on personal experience and choice. Hope similar minded travellers may find this useful. Day 1: Port Blair: Airport and Commute: ⁃ You will find taxis both outside as well as pre-paid. Standard rate for taxis in the city for any point A to point B is INR 300. ⁃ If you book from Pre-paid inside airport, then the charge is INR 315 and you pay an additional parking fee of INR 60 to the parking attendant on exit ⁃ Autos are available and subject to negotiations. I did not avail them and thus am not aware of the rates. ⁃ Hotels typically take some time to give room. If you do not want to waste the day, you may want to head to Ross Island / North Bay or Cellular Jail or both depending on when the flight has landed Stay: ⁃ We stayed in Salt Life. This is a B&B very close to Haddo Jetty. Booked the best room 111 and it had fantastic view of the sea and bay. Highly recommended but not close to market. Swiggy works. Sightseeing ⁃ Ross Island and North Bay gets extremely crowded. So, better to take the ferry leaving around 9-9.30 am. It plies till about 1 pm. Charges are INR 850 / person. Also, there will be agents trying to book you for water activities. While they will insist that they need booking from Port Blair, you might as well book them in the North Bay itself. ⁃ Boats will typically be booked for a group of 8-9. Stops for 1 hour at Ross Island and for 3 hours at North Bay. You have to wait till other passengers are done with their activities because the boat moves ahead and returns back only when everyone is done. ⁃ We started by 9.30 am and returned to Port Blair by 2.30 pm. We did not have energy for Cellular Jail, though timing-wise it is completely doable. So it can be planned together. ⁃ At Ross Island, battery operated buggies are available for INR 80 per person. Buggy takes 6 people. Either you share or you book them for INR 480. It takes up to the highest point from where stairs are there to the Lighthouse below. The driver mumbles about the ruins on the way, doesn’t provide much idea on the historical background but then again the ruins are absolute ruins and there is not much to see in them. The view from Lighthouse is beautiful though and provides a good segue to what lies ahead ⁃ North Bay is nice. The Corals are good. Snorkeling costs INR 1000 per person. This is using Full Mask which allows breathing through nose and thus anyone can do it. Also it’s on shallow water. Photography is extra for INR 500 per person. Kayaking is also INR 1000 per person. Semi-Submarine (half sunken with glass windows) is available but possibly better done in Havelock. I saw people taking Glass Bottom boat rides - I did not take it, so not sure how it is. ⁃ Changing rooms (very basic) is available. Either you carry spare clothes or swimming costumes, else clothes can be taken on rent @ INR 50 per person. Rented clothes is typically shorts / 3-quarters and t-shirts l. Under garments can also be purchased. ⁃ Restaurants with basic food options and fruits are available in plenty. ⁃ Note: Unless you do water sports, there is not much to be done in North Bay other than visiting the Lighthouse. So, unless the whole group in your boat decides to do no activities, you will be stuck in there till all are done. That part is extremely boring (and uncomfortable due to heat) ⁃ Potentially, one can return back by 3-3.30 pm and head for Cellular Jail or the Light and Sound show later. Light and Sound show needs to be booked in advance and online. Tickets are not available on the spot and popular slots get filled up easily. There is a Light and Sound show in Ross Island as well. That needs to be planned (in terms of boats, etc) ⁃ Jolly Buoy (part of natural reserve): Trips are typically made only early in the morning. Pick ups from hotel happen only around 6 am or 7 am and boats leave from Wandoor beach (30 min away from Port Blair) by 9 am. Boats return by 2-3 pm. So, unless you have a full day dedicated to Jolly Buoy, you cannot visit it due to the starting time. Also, this being a natural reserve, there are not water sports available. Visit for beauty of corals only. ⁃ Places I have not visited and do not have much of an idea even: Corbyn’s Cove beach - heard it’s pretty but didn’t go because it cannot compare with Havelock / Neil. Also, I did not visit the marine museum or anthropological museum. ⁃ Other things of interest: Swiggy and Zomato are available in Port Blair. Food delivery is available, not the other services. ⁃ We went to Seafood Delights for dinner. It has a good view and has an AC section. Most places in Port Blair do not have AC (e.g. New Light House). You can choose raw seafood and style of cooking. Also, most restaurants, like this one, does not serve alcohol. Day 2 and 3: Havelock: Commute: ⁃ We had booked Makruzz cruise / ferry from Port Blair. Private boats leave from Haddo Jetty. Ticket needs to be booked in advance since they get full. We booked ours online from BookMyBoat.com ⁃ Please reach at least an hour in advance. There is fairly long queue for Check-in. Port Blair does luggage scan (Havelock and Neil does not have it, so saves some time) ⁃ On reaching, you can get taxi: Upto Dolphin resort the rate is INR 200. Beyond Dolphin it is INR 300 on the Vijaynagar Beach side. If you go to Radhanagar Beach, typical charge is 1000 (from Silver Sands, where we stayed). If you book dinner and return late (we had dinner at Barefoot at Radhanagar Beach), they charge INR 1500 ⁃ You can get Auto too. From Seashell (where a friend stayed), auto took them 600-800 to Radhanagar, dinner and back ⁃ Scooties can be rented. Charges mentioned by driver was 600/ day. However, in BookMyBoat website there is an option to book scooties for even 450/ day. This is a better option to roam around if you do not mind the Sun Stay: ⁃ We stayed in Silver Sands Beach Resort. ⁃ This is on Vijaynagar Beach and the main road runs through the middle of the hotel, rooms can be on both sides ⁃ Typically when booking this through agents or MMT, do check on room category and if they are on the beach side. During our check-in one family booked cottage and got rooms in the further side of the road ⁃ Food is insanely expensive though taste is very good. Virgin Mohito had a printed price of 699 and with tax it came to 825. Better to eat outside. ⁃ Beach is fantastic and beautiful. Hotel has private beach. Good for sunrise. ⁃ View-wise similar to Kalapatthar Beach. We skipped visiting, view was the same. Sightseeing ⁃ Radhanagar Beach js a Blue Beach and has all facilities. It literally had hoards of people taking bath since it’s one of the few beaches in South Andamans where you can bathe without fear of hitting rocks or corals. ⁃ Outside beach, lots of shops are present with gift items and food (including seafood). Have been told that gifts come cheaper in Radhanagar shops compared to Neil shops. ⁃ You can enter Barefoot either from beach, through the forests or after crossing the shops. We did the former. Restaurant opens around 6.30-7. Sunset happens much sooner, by 5.20 pm. ⁃ Next day early morning I did deep sea Scuba. It cost me 4000. If booked through various websites, it can cost 4500-5500. This includes regular photography and video. I paid 1000 extra for getting clicked through GoPro camera. All scuba starts around Nemo Beach. There are multiple scuba diving companies. ⁃ Later in morning, after breakfast, we went to Elephanta Beach. Only a narrow stretch of beach is available for activities and the rest is a forest reserve area where entry is not allowed. Water is crystal clear. ⁃ Cost of per person is INR 1000 in speed boat. Activities are fairly expensive. However, on reaching, you can do free snorkelling in the shallow water using half mask. If you want full mask, it costs INR 500. Free snorkelling is done 1 person at a time and thus takes lot of time if there is a large group. ⁃ If you do deep sea snorkelling (where they take you slightly in the deep), then it’s INR 1000 per person. If photography is included, it’s INR 1200. ⁃ You can rent lockers for INR 100. We had carried clothes this time. ⁃ We also did Semi-Submarine. It was expensive at INR 3500 per person. The view was amazing. But inside the space is cramped and after some time, i felt bit queasy. If you are not going for Scuba, it’s absolutely worth it because of the view. ⁃ We were done in 1 hour after these activities. After that had to wait for 2 hours because the other groups in our boat wanted to do other activities. It was boring and an utter waste of time. ⁃ Food options available include mostly fruits, chips, etc. ⁃ We started by 9.45 am and returned by 2.30 pm. On reaching we had lunch at Barefoot Brasserie, bang on the jetty. Serves good pasta and pizza. ⁃ We visited Full Moon Cafe for dinner. It was beautiful, great food, fantastic ambience, doesn’t serve alcohol. It was close to hotel. Taxi up and down was INR 500. ⁃ Other things of interest: Snorkelling can even be done in Nemo Beach. It costs INR 2000. So, this is better done either in the other places or in Neil Bharatpur Beach. Day 4: Neil Island: Commute: ⁃ We had booked Makruzz cruise / ferry from Havelock to Neil. ⁃ On reaching, you can get taxi: Rate is INR 200. Taxis only prefer doing hotel, Bharatpur Beach and the tourist destinations in evening, Lakshmanpur Beach and Natural Bridge (nothing great.. people mile to the spot for pictures) ⁃ There are fantastic beaches like Ramnagar Beach and Sitapur Beach. Taxis do lot of “nakhra” about going there. Best to take Auto or Bikes. Totally worth it if you like less crowd and good cafe to laze around. Mostly foreigners go that side. ⁃ Auto and scooter charges are similar to Havelock. Stay: ⁃ We stayed in Seashell Samssara Beach Resort. ⁃ This is on Lakshmanpur Beach ⁃ Food is good and not as insanely expensive as Silver Sands. ⁃ Beach is beautiful but not good for bathing. It is full of rocks. Hotel has private beach. Sightseeing ⁃ We went to Lakshmanpur beach for sunset. There’s a medium walk from parking to the beach through tall trees. ⁃ Sunset was beautiful on the rocky shore. ⁃ There’s a walking street kind of shopping area of food, gifts, etc. ⁃ Ripon sea food is very good. They grill in front of you and items are reasonably priced. ⁃ Ocean gift centre was good. Bargaining needed for all shops, but their collection was good. Have been told that prices are lesser in Havelock Radhanagar Beach though. ⁃ Point to Note: Water activities can be done in Bharatpur beach. Rates are similar to that of Elephant Beach though Semi-Submarine is not available. There are lot of good food stalls as well. Day 5: Port Blair: Commute: ⁃ We had booked Nautika cruise / ferry from Neil to Havelock. Nautika takes 15 min more but timings were better. Boats have more spacr in Makruzz. Stay: ⁃ We stayed in Seashell Port Blair. This is next to WelcomHeritage resort overlooking Phoenix Bay and quite close to Aberdeen Market and Cellular Jail. ⁃ Food is good in both Salt and Pepper and Amaya, which is supposedly the best restaurant in Port Blair (rooftop - seafood) Sightseeing ⁃ We went to Chidiya Tapu beach for sunset. There’s a medium walk from parking to the beach through tall trees. ⁃ Sunset was beautiful on the rocky shore. ⁃ Taxi cost typically is INR 1500. ⁃ Point to Note: The route is beautiful and scenic through forests and beaches. ⁃ We could not do Cellular Jail Light and Sound because we had not booked tickets in advance and slots got full. Day 6: We left for airport! Final Note: I would recommend the following drivers: ⁃ Port Blair: Amit +91 96795 55893 ⁃ Havelock: Krishna +91 7695-025028 ⁃ I did not like the Neil driver. He was showing too much attitude. His name was Tapas. Also, activities in North Bay can be booked by following person: ⁃ Dasarath Roy: +91 94760 90044 It’s a beautiful place to visit. I felt that our visit was too rushed. I will come back in future for Baratang Caves and Diglipur. PS: Lots of Bengalis in Andamans. In Havelock, 90% speak Bengali with a Bangaal accent. If you are a Bengali, that’s an added comfort.

One day to see Kolkata and get a feel for life in the city.
Chandrae was amazing !! I think I saw all of Kolkata from the working class to the elite…. From Catholic to Buddhist to Jewish places of worship… from Mother Theresa’s home to beautiful apartment buildings to wholesalers to ceramic creators to markets. Lunch was wonderful. Indian food made without spices and dessert was spectacular.

So much to see, great experience
Very interesting and history rich city. I went with my dad and we got everything we wanted from our quick one day tour Kolkata. Our guide (Subrata!) was very accommodating and hospitable as well as knowledgeable of all subjects. We got to see Mother's House and see special parts of the convent not open to the public. We were very happy with our experience

          Kolkata Day trip with Chandrayee
Chandrayee was friendly, courteous and knowledgeable. She contacted me prior to the tour to confirm, which was very helpful. She planned the day very well and we were able to make over a dozen stops, including time for a good lunch, without feeling rushed. We drove through some spots, but stopped at at least six places to explore in more detail. She had good information on what we were seeing and we had an interesting day. She also took some wonderful photographs of us and followed up after we were dropped off at our hotel. I am happy to recommend Chandrayee as a guide to other tourists for an interesting day .

Excellent one-day overview of Kolkata, perfect!
Any colonial city from Casablanca to Cuzco has wide boulevards with European buildings and cathedrals but it is the local bazaars, fish markets and ancient narrow alleys that give it character. It was impossible to get into Flurys on Christmas Day but we did swing around the less touristy parts of the city and ended the day at Kim Ling, Tangra. I hadn’t been inside the stunning Jain temple before! We just had one day in Kolkata to introduce our American-born and brought-up children and friends to the city of joy. The goal was to go around the city for a quick overview. That goal was successfully achieved with our guide Subrata, and we hope to have piqued enough interest in the kids for them to return to city for an extended time and explore it in full. Quick-O-City's service was expensive by Calcutta standards but impeccable, and we would recommend it to anyone seeking to learn more about the cultural capital of India.

Saw key things with a great guide!
I loved going on this tour. I managed to cover key attractions in Kolkata in the comfort of an air conditioned car. As a guide I’ve never had one so fantastic as Subrata. Eloquent in recounting heroic stories of Kolkata’s past, articulate in regaling me with the fascinating history of the City of Joy. Subrata has an excellent command of the English language and we breezily switched between English and our native tongue Bengali when chatting about the city and the attractions he took me to. Subrata took the time to go through the list of attractions to get a feel for what I would love to see - and he made it all happen! A nice well thought out itinerary - we covered some of the best things the city has to offer, including delicious food. Along the way I found Subrata warm, kind, personable and helpful. If you come to Kolkata I highly recommend Subrata as a guide to show you around - he made my experience unforgettable! Thank you!

Great Experience. We enjoyed this tour very much. Our tour guide Saikat chandra was very knowledgeable, passionate and friendly and he explained very nicely about the historical background of the city and the Ganaga Sagar. Saikat was also very good at communication before the tour started so that we know what to expect on the tour day.
Overall we enjoyed our long day tour of Ganga Sagar and would highly recommend this tour.

The day in Kolkata started early when I was met by the tour company’s manager Puja (accompanied her husband Sufi). Puja and Sufi were exemplary hosts, and charming company throughout the day.

The majority of the day was spent driving (and driving in India is an experience in and of itself!), but it was a great opportunity to see more of the real India.

The ferry ride on the Ganges was nice, and seeing the temple that is so important to Hindus (that sits on the shore of the Bay of Bengal) was worthwhile.

The tour company handles everything, and looks out for their tourists closely.
