- Explorer222346240840 contributionsExperiencing indian history and sightseeing ancient templesWe booked a tour for the Mahabalipuram temples. We were picked up directly from our hotel and were driven to the temples with a private car. We started our tour with a visit to the shore temple and continued onwards from there to all the different temples and structures. Our tour guide Kannan provided extensive information on the history of every sight that we visited and answered all of our questions, not just the ones about the temples but all others about different topics as well. We could enjoy a nice view over the entire area from the top of the old light house and had the opportunity to buy traditional stone carvings from a master stone mason. At the end of our tour we shared an excellent traditional Indian meal with our guide near sights. It was an amazing experience which I can recommend to anyone visiting Chennai for the time.Written December 3, 2024
- spangledragon0 contributionsInsightful trip into Chennai's British past, brought alive through buildingsIt felt typically British as we meandered around the old part of Chennai in the rain, but it did not dampen the guides enthusiasm! Hareesh took me on a tour of a range of British buildings in Chennai, explaining the history of the British time in the city and the changes they made. Meeting at Egmore station, he explained the different architectural influences on the building from British to Persian. We walked onto the Main station, learning about the effect on Chennai of the railways and the new modern metro system currently being installed. We then took the train for a stop, and took in the Ripon Building, which seemed so incongruous and, well, British, in a very Indian setting. It is still a government building, albeit with the odd addition of an Aircon unit. We passed the railway HQ, complete with a steam train, and finished with a walk around the University of Madras, which is an enchanting campus close to the beach. All in all a very interesting few hours, As a British I'm glad we did a few positive things in India, despite our aggressive colonial past. Hareesh speaks excellent English and is a very engaging guide who made time for a lovely cup of coffee. Communication from 5senses was good throughout.Written November 26, 2024
- Maps251994563760 contributionsInformative and surprising Chennai experience. Our second day tour with 5 Senses covered many interesting sites in Chennai itself. We again had Kannan as our guide and Mohan as our driver. The positive experience with them both is expressed in our review of our day trip to Mamallapuram the day before. We were not rushed and Kannan provided many historical "quirks" and stories about a number of the sites that we would otherwise have been unaware and this added greatly to the experience. Again we enjoyed a delicious meal but this time he walked us through a typical Northern Indian Thali while comparing it with the Southern Indian Thali we had on the Mamallapuram tour. A thoughtful consideration. Based on both our tours with 5 Senses we would highly recommend them.Written November 24, 2024
- Maps251994563760 contributionsExcellent Day Tour to MamallapuramThis was the first of two tours we had with 5 Senses Tours in Chennai. Our guide was Kannan who was very punctual and personable. The trip to Mamallapuram was very comprehensive covering all the major sites. As we are not familiar with the Hindu dieties, Kannan was very patient in explaining the stories depicted in the carvings. His commentary was easy to follow and knowledgeable. He also took us to an impressive Jain temple and explained much about this particular religion. Lastly he took us to lunch for a delicious South Indian Thali and educated us on what each dish was and how they should be eaten. We also had an excellent, safe and careful driver in Mohan.Written November 24, 2024
- Clarissa C0 contributionsPrivate tourAn outstanding journey through history, culture, and breathtaking architecture. This tailored experience allowed me to explore the wonders of this UNESCO World Heritage site at my own pace, and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in India’s rich history. The tour began with a prompt pick-up from my hotel. The guide accompanying me was knowledgeable. One of the highlights was the flexibility of the tour. Unlike group tours, this private setup allowed me to linger at sites that intrigued me the most and skip areas that were less appealing. I also appreciated the opportunity to explore local shops and try some authentic South Indian cuisine, which added a personal touch to the experience.Written November 23, 2024

Our tour included discussions about the regions history, religious sites, and architectural locations like lighthouse #4 on the beach. I highly recommend you take a tour of Chennai with Satish and take a deep dive into one of India’s premier cities!Written November 15, 2024
- M5291WUantonk0 contributionsFirst trip to IndiaIt has been my first time to India. This experience would not be as good if I did not had the tour to Mahabalipuram. The sightseeing were astonishing and my guide, Ramesh told me all about those monuments and he has been so proffesional in making photographs and navigating atiund other groups to gain the best view. I have really enjoyed the tour. In the end of the tour we have tried tasty athentic local food. Overall, I am happy about my trip but now I really one day is too little for visiting Tamil Nadu. - spangledragon0 contributionsHistory, colour, sound and soul. Fascinating trip.An early start, but worth it to get time at the temples before they close at 12. Avoiding the cows on the motorway, we drove through the outskirts of Chennai and through padi fields and palm trees to reach Kanchipuram, the town of a thousand temples. We stopped for coffee which was good. Hareesh, our guide, was full of information about the history of the town, it's prominence as a pilgrimage location within India and about the three main temples we visited. His English was excellent, and we learnt more about the Hindu faith and rituals, and made offerings ourselves with his guidance . Of particular interest was the 3500 year old mango tree which defies biologists and produces four different fruits! He took some lovely photos of us in the way, and we also visited a centre to see silk weaving and a family silk business. A great trip, made better by a super guide and driver (who guided us safely through some "interesting" traffic).Written November 14, 2024

- Marla W0 contributionsFabulous tripThis was a fabulous tour. I was picked up at my hotel in an air conditioned car. We saw multiple temples and the 5 Senses guide was great. He explained the history of these temples from 600AD and a little background to better understand. Before leaving we stopped for lunch. I would highly recommend this trip.Written November 8, 2024

We designed our own trip in consultation with Five Senses Tours. Our two days of touring were separated by a few days in Pondicherry. Five Senses Tours was very open to adjusting to what we wanted. Day 1 we drove from Chennai to the temples at Mahabalipuram, Our guides, Vijay and Ramesh, were very knowledgeable and together they helped us get the most out of the experience. It was very special to visit these wonderful temples with them. After we spent a few days in Pondicherry Day 2 of the tour took us to Kanchipuram where our understanding and experience of the sites we visited was again enhanced by Vijay's knowledge and his communication skills. Having Vijay with us also meant we were taken to great places to eat! The driver, Arvind, was also extremely good. I am sometimes a nervous passenger but I felt complete confidence in his driving. After arriving back in Chennai we were taken to the St Thomas Basilica, which was also a fascinating site, and then Arvind took us to the airport. Five Senses Tours was very accommodating of our wishes and needs, and provided great support. I couldn't recommend Five Senses Tours and its guides and drivers enough for reliably providing us with a highly memorable trip.

I joined the full day tours of Mahabalipuram as well as Kanchipuram. The reasons why I chose these tours was that per description these tours would include not only visits to the temples but also other interesting places on the way.
The Mahabalipuram tour started with a traditional South Indian breakfast and my tour guide Narayanan gave very interesting insights into the different choices. After this followed a visit to Dakshin Chitra, where you get to see real traditional houses of the South Indian states, which were dismantled and rebuilt at this site. The place is fascinating as you also get to see sculptures and traditional glass blowing. It is enough to visit this place for a short time and Narayanan suggested we only visit the Tamil Nadu section but gave me the option to stay longer - I appreciated the flexibility.
The temples at Mahabalipuram are a must, a local tour guide joined us to provide historic insights. The tour also included a traditional lunch which was spectacular and a visit to an active Hindu temple closer to Chennai.
The Kanchipuram tour was fantastic as well. The temples are spectacular. Even though I could not enter the praying section at one temple as a non hindu, you get to see most of the temple interiors and Narayanan again connected with local guides to provide the most insightful information about the various sites. We also visited a silk weaver and silk dying factory, and a closeby organic dairy farm. Again Narayanan was flexible and gave me options for how to spend the rest of the day rather than finishing the tour early. I chose to walk through the markets of Kanchipuram, which was fascinating and different to those in Chennai.
Overall I highly recommend 5 Senses Tours. Narayanan is a very helpful, friendly and knowledgeable guide who is very well connected in the area which enables visiting not only the temples but other locations such as the silk weaving and organic dairy farms.

Took a day trip from Chennai to Pondichery and then to Mahabalipuram with Vijay from Five Senses Tours. Fascinating trip to the former French colony with a side trip to the Auroville commune. Then visited the Mahabalipuram monuments on the way back to Chennai. Vijay was a fabulous tour guide and host. We had great conversation on the trip and he was quite knowledgeable. He also arranged a specialist additional guide for Mahabalipuram. All sites were interesting but I'm particularly happy that I visited Mahabalipuram with its monolithic monuments (carved from single large stone!). I highly recommend Vijay and Five Senses. I'll likely be back in Chennai in the future and will certainly use them again.

My colleague and I had an off day from our business meeting and decided to take this day trip tour from Chennai. It was an awesome time! Kannan was a great guide and walked us through the history of the local monuments and temples in Mahabalipuram. This was followed by an authentic local meal that did not disappoint! The day ended with visiting the St. Thomas cathedral as well as the site where he was hiding and miraculously escaped capture. Very interesting history even if you are not so religious! I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone staying in the Chennai area.

The 5 Senses Tour company is extremely responsive and accommodating. We received quick responses despite timezone differences and short notice. Prior to arriving in Chennai we organised the Dakshin Chitra and Mahabalipuram tour.
The Dakshin Chitra and Mahabalipuram tour includes a trip to site where you can see and walk through replica homes of the various types homes found in the state of Tamal Nadu. The second half of this tour includes beachside views (with cows) and historic religious monuments as well as a heritage temple. This tour outside of Chennai combines cultural tutelage along with some amazing historic sites.
After enjoying the cultural education and sightseeing with Vijay, we reached out to 5 Senses last minute to seek availability and flexibility in respect to seeing some sights more centrally located in Chennai.
Vijay and 5 Senses were extremely accommodating in organising another day tour to include the sights we asked to see and provide us another memorable day, even getting us behind the scenes access to a stunning old library collection that is not open to the public.
Both day tours we took included transportation, a great tour guide, and a delicious lunch all included.
Vijay is very knowledgable about Hinduism and local culture. Our overall experience with the company was great.

I traveled to South India with nearly 20 friends in February 2017. The purpose of our trip was a spiritual pilgrimage to Tiruvannamalai, but we wanted to add a little time in Chennai at the beginning of our trip and a little time in Pondicherry at the end of our trip. We also needed a way to get 20 people plus luggage to Tiruvannamalai. The idea came to hire a tour company. The first company we contacted seemed legitimate, although their prices were surprisingly low. However, when it came time to pay we got suspicious because they wanted us to wire the payment to a bank account in India, but the name on the account was a series of letters and numbers instead of their company name. I started looking for reviews on that company and couldn't find anything about them. However, I did notice that lots of people had given 5 Senses a good review, so I decided to forget about the previous company and contact 5 Senses. So glad I did!!!
I worked with Narayanan to plan a few different day trips for our group. The prices were fair. They weren't as cheap as the previous possibly-fake company, but they were very inexpensive by western standards. During the planning process, Narayanan answered every question I had promptly. He also stayed in touch during our stay in India to make sure we were satisfied with the tours, and we were.
Our tour guide was Satish, and he was incredibly caring as a guide. He watched over us like a father watching over his children making sure no one was lost as we walked the streets of India. He arranged local guides for us at Mahabalipuram and Kapaaleswar Temple to make sure we were properly educated on these magnificent sites. He taught us to participate in the puja ceremony at the Sai Baba temple, which was a highlight for most of our travelers. One friend on our tour said she noticed him give money to the beggars outside of a church we visited in Pondicherry so that the beggars would let us pass by without a hassle. Once a member of our group saw a coffee shop on the beach and spontaneously suggested that we stop there. Satish immediately agreed and we had a nice refreshing unscheduled stop.
Next time I go to India, I will definitely contact 5 Senses again. With them, I have found a tour company that I know I can trust from beginning to end.
