Stop At: Kapaleeshwarar Temple, Kapaleesvarar Sannadhi Street Vinayaka Nagar Colony, Chennai (Madras) 600004 India

Mylapore is - and has in some sense always been - the religious and cultural epicenter of the Tamil people. The village of Mylapore pre-dates Chennai. A great shore temple dedicated to Shiva once stood at this ancient thriving seaport, until the Portuguese arrived in the mid-sixteenth century. They destroyed the temple, created a Portuguese colony on the shore, and pushed Mylapore inshore, where it still stands today. The Shiva temple was re-built 300 years ago, and is called the Kapaleeswara Temple. It is a fine example of the pure Dravidian style, with gopurams and mandapams, and is the epicentre around which the area of Mylapore is built.

During this walk, you will visit the temple in the company of our knowledgeable guide. We will also walk through the surrounding areas, where you can see Mylapore in all its crowded chaos. The jewellers, silk merchants, fruit and vegetable sellers and the flower vendors in the bazaars provide a colourful backdrop to the temple. The walk takes us through small lanes with old-style homes, through silk shops, stores selling music and religious memorablia, ‘kutcheri’ auditoriums, etc.

Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

Stop At: Santhome Cathedral, 38, Santhome High Road, Santhome, Chennai, Tamil Nadu 600004, India

San Thome Church, also known as St. Thomas Cathedral Basilica and International Shrine of Saint Thomas is a Roman Catholic minor basilica in Santhome, in the city of Chennai, India. At the end of the tour, we stop at the popular Saravana Bhavan for snacks and coffee.

Mahabalipuram, Pondicherry & Chidambaram with WonderTours
We asked for a guide for our customized trip of Mahabalipuram, Pondicherry and Chidambaram. Mr. Rajesh who is the owner of Wonder Tours arranged excellent guides for us for all of the above locationa. We were very pleased about the services they provided. Infact, Mr. Rajesh came in person on the first day to Mahabalipuram to introduce the guide to us. I strongly recommend wonder tours for anyone who is planning to use their services in South India.

Amazing day trip from Chennai!
We had a the best day - our guide was amazing, so kind and gracious and had our comfort and enjoyment in mind the whole day. All of the details were taken care of an all we had to do was show up and enjoy. The tour guides at the various stops were amazing, the lunch was incredible and all of the sights and history we discovered that day was really amazing. Our host and driver were great. I would highly recommend this tour and would do it again!

Hot but very interesting
Booked this trip as its itinerary contained what I wanted + the English guide. Pickup from hotel was in time, and I was surprised to be the only participant. At the end I had three guys at my service: driver, tour lead and local guide. This worked out well. I got good intro to all the locations plus two extra as the trip went so smoothly. A very interesting place, especially with the guides. Quite hot in late April, a good idea to start as early as possible, even if that makes the lunch timing a challenge. Four stars as all so fine but no luxury. Could use the same team again.

For cost, arrange your own. For Convenience use Hotel
We found the option at the airport with the taxi stand desk (inside arrivals, once you walk out of area with your luggage) to be very helpful, easy to use and economical. For example it was 500 R and 2100 with hotel. Big difference. If you use the airport taxi stand as we did you tell them where you are going, pay the cost and receive a voucher. Take it outside and you are met and taken to the taxi. Be prepared to pay a tip to the fellow who assists you and also to your driver as no other cash is exchanged. Great service. It was 500 R to our hotel. For the return ride to the airport from the hotel we allowed the hotel to book for us and it was 2100 R. I’d just arrange my own next time, both ways!

Excellent food tour! True experience!
Had an amazing tour of the Sowcarpet market - a very authentic experience. The food was amazing and so much more than I could even eat. The tour guide also provided information on the locale and its history and was willing to actively guide me through the busy streets. He was also willing to wait for me while my uber was en route and found me the perfect pickup location (there are restrictions to where cabs can pickup and, being that it was Tamil New Year, traffic was especially hectic). Such a good variety of foods and a very eye opening look at a lively market in the heart of Chennai. Would highly recommend although perhaps not for the faint of heart :)

I did not get the tour others got
I booked this tour as it seemed to have very good reviews, and I was looking forward to seeing this area as well as the markets. As it turned out I was the only one on the tour and although the tour guide was VERY sweet and nice (must stress this) the tour itself was NOT what I paid for and was a bit awkward. I was the only one taking the tour that day and the overview said it was going to be about 2 hours and there would be a chance to actually shop at the markets. We met at a hotel and then looked at the vegetable tables, then a rice store. Then we got into an auto rickshaw and just drove around the streets a few times. The guide tried to tell me a few things here and there but there was so much noisy traffic and people etc. (as well as a little bit of a language barrier) that I did not get anything at all from that rickshaw tour. In the end we ended back at the hotel we started from within an hour, having only seen a table of onions, a rice store, and some random blurry 'from a rickshaw' images of the neighbourhood. Again, sweet guide, horrible tour. I contacted Wonder Tours about how I got very little value for my money and requested a discount (as I really did not get a tour) however they did not respond.

Electrifying afternoon at one of the most vibrant areas of Chennai
Rajesh gave a wonderful tour of the Bazaar at Georgetown, including pertinent historical details, cultural references, and information on the bazaar layout as it stands today. We both walked and took a bicycle rickshaw through the narrow streets and alleys and every inch of the tour was bursting with life and color. I was able to go into shops and make purchases as well and we ended the trip with a nice snack and chat at a local restaurant. This is a shorter tour, leaving much of your day open for other activities or to go back into the bazaar for more shopping.

Great tour - friendly and knowledgeable guide
Just completed a tour of the Georgetown bazaars. My guide was Rajesh who is the owner of Wonder Tours. The tour last about 2 hours and went through the various street markets of Georgetown - part on foot and part on tuk tuk. It was great to experience the sights and sounds of the various markets and see Chennai up close and personal. Rajesh explained the history of the different parts of the markets as went along. If you go on the tour, keep an eye out for the statue of King George who Georgetown is named after! It is a tour I would definitely recommend!

Friendly and flexible
Rajesh greeted us promptly at the meeting spot. He is a very friendly guy and since it was just us and him, was happily flexible and added extra stops that we were interested in. A little more in-depth historical perspective would have been nice but we had no complaints and enjoyed our time with him.
