Itinerary
- Rajiv Chowk, Block B, Connaught Place, New Delhi, Delhi 110001, IndiaRajiv Chowk Metro Station Gate Number 2
- 1Meet your guide at Connaught Place in the morning or afternoon, depending on which option you selected upon booking, and set out by metro for Sanjay Colony, a small slum built on 25 acres (8 hectares) of land. After a 40-minute metro ride, walk with your guide and small group to the nearby slum and commence your 2 hour walking tour. Follow a maze of narrow streets as you’re introduced to enterprising residents and their small-scale industries. Stop by a clothes recycling-and-manufacturing business to observe how materials are painstakingly separated, and learn about the clothing factories where many families work to make the finished items. Leave your cameras at home — photos are prohibited on this tour — and give your full attention to the people and buildings that surround you. Visit a small Hindu temple and hear about the importance of religion in the residents’ lives. Gain a further understanding of daily life in the slum on a visit to a local home, where you can engage in an informative conversation with a family. Enjoy a stunning rooftop view of Sanjay Colony before ending your tour at a small school, where you can see evidence of the positive contribution that proceeds from the tour make in the community. Please note: We are sensitive to the issues and concerns surrounding slums and we understand that this tour may not be suitable for everyone. We strongly believe that the purpose of this tour is for educational reasons alone and allows for a better understanding of Indian life inside Sanjay Colony. Furthermore, the majority of the proceeds from your local tour operator go back into the local community to support a variety of projects on education, health and livelihood.

About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- katesydneyau0 contributionsIncredible RajasthanAfter lots of researching we came across Understanding India Tours on the internet and this company seemed to be just what I was looking for. I contacted Ravi (one of the owners) and within a very short time we were emailing one another to come up with a tour that met my requirements. Ravi was very responsive from the start and took time to understand my requirements. He made some helpful suggestions and he was happy to make any changes I requested until I was totally happy with the finalised itinerary. Only a deposit is payable once the tour is confirmed in order for the hotel rooms to be reserved, the balance is payable during your stay in India. Ravi himself and driver Sandip gave us a very warm welcome at Delhi airport then Krishna (company guide) and Sandip was with us for the entire tour with local guides in each cities. Both really looked after us, ensuring that we were comfortable, had ample time at the sights. The car was very new, spacious (there were 5 of us), spotlessly clean. It was also air conditioned and had wi-fi. Towards the end of our tour we again met with Ravi and I have to say he comes across as a businessman with real integrity. He genuinely cares about his customers and wants them to have a great experience in his country. I have no hesitation in recommending Understanding India Tours.Written November 30, 2020
- Sitka11110 contributionsHeart of Old DelhiRavi led us through a remarkable array of bustling, chaotic, amazing, and delicious experiences in Old Delhi. Wow. As a guide Ravi is clearly expert, knowledgable, organized and constantly tending to our welfare. But best of all he is enthusiastic and loves his city. Very strong recommendation.Written February 11, 2020
- harveenbindra50 contributionsInformative and delicous! My husband and I signed up for a group tour and ended up being the only 2 on our tour. Ravi was our guide, and was super informative. The food we tried was SO good (my favorite was the aloo chaat and my husband's was the fried chicken), and it was nice to not be worried about the hygiene of the places we were going. We specifically wanted to do a street food tour because we wanted street good but weren't sure of where to go to ensure not getting Delhi Belly. :D On a personal note, we also enjoyed talking to and getting to know Ravi. Great guy, great conversation, super kind and helpful. I would highly recommend this company and this tour to anybody interested!Written January 23, 2020
- welovedarts0 contributionsThankyou RaviGreat 4 hour food tour with guide ravi. This man took us all over parts of new and old Delhi by rickshaw. Food was lovely. Best stop for me I think was the fried chicken. Thankyou again ravi for giving us the food tour. Chris n nikki xWritten January 23, 2020
- Minochauk0 contributionsBest trip everOur trip with Ravi through Delhi, Agra & Jaipur has been amazing. He has arranged all type of activities and guide tours in order to know in the best possible way all the cities and villages of the region. Ravi has been really patient, watchful and he has explained a lot of things of the authentic indian culture, history and traditions. I think is a really good experience also for families with teenagers. Understanding India Tours help you find real and authentic experiences. All the hotels that they had recommended us were perfect. I totally recommend this trip with Understanding India, the service they provided us was perfect.Written December 27, 2019

I take time now to make sure you use this company if you are looking for safety, care, service, advice and help. Do not hesitate. We kept this service over a 3 day period and did various tours in Delhi, including Taj Mahal. No regrets, extremely satisfied. Excellent drivers, very caring attitude and understanding foreigners needs. Well done Ravi. Keep up the good workWritten December 26, 2019
- jamesrnyanime0 contributionsThe Best Way to Taste Delhi! We went on the 4 hour food tour with our friends and enjoyed every minute of it. The food was amazingly flavoursome and unique. It was a very well researched tour; our guide Jitu was interesting and knowledgeable. We saw a part of Delhi that we would’ve completely missed out on otherwise. As a bonus, we were also given names of the best restaurants to go to in other parts of India.Written November 8, 2019
- juliandiatro0 contributionsWell Organised and Excellent Tour EscortWe've just returned from an 14 night tour of Rajasthan that was put together with the help of Ravi. We had been to India before so had an idea what we wanted to do and Ravi gave us advice on places to go, timings etc. His communication was always clear and very helpful. The hotels he booked for us were just incredible and comfortable. We knew from experience that a good tour escort and driver was vital to the success of our holiday and are pleased to say that the our company guide Amar was excellent along with all local guides in cities. Amar was always polite, helpful and punctual and was good company throughout the journey.Written November 7, 2019
- 207jlf0 contributionsDelicious food, great guidesBrilliant tour of Old Delhi. The food was amazing and mainly vegetarian - although a chicken dish is also served. Plenty of food to fill you up and you can eat more than one serving if you want to (we didn't as there was already lots!). Ravi was an EXCELLENT tour guide, talking to us about history as well as food. I would recommend this tour to everyone and I will be bringing others on this tour when the visit Delhi.Written July 16, 2019
- Lucaswilliamson10 contributionsDelicious food tour in Old DelhiI'm pretty picky about tours especially food tours but I really enjoyed this one. Old Delhi came be overwhelming to navigate so I really appreciated the guidance and organization of this tour. I was impressed with not only the amount of food-- I think there were seven stops, but everything we tried was unique and delicious. Also our tour guide Amar was great-- he was funny, educational, and went the extra mile. It was one of the highlights of my trip. I highly recommend!Written July 4, 2019

- John321wick0 contributionsOur Amazing guide RAVI and Amazing food tour with UNDERSTANDING INDIA TOUR.We only had one day in Delhi and I chose to spend it with Understanding India and Ravi. I think we got to see more and do more on this food tour than we could have possibly done ourselves. We spent time at a Sikh temple, went through old Delhi, and finished with delicious sweets. Ravi managed to work in trips to local sites like the sikh temple and spice market or bringing us to some of the most delicious food we had in India. He made our trip to Delhi perfect and we absolutely recommend it!Written January 30, 2019
- thejjor0 contributionsFun and Immersive TourThis tour was such a wonderful way to experience a unique part of Delhi while having some delicious food at the same time. Ravi was amazing. - Johnwood000 contributionsReal Delhi ExperienceWe were welcomed at the metro station by Ravi, founder of Understanding India Tours. He introduced us to the Amar, our guide for the day. Before starting the walk he gave some good instructions for entering the Sanjay Colony slum, Because both grew up in the slum they knew everything and everyone, not only about the present but also about the past of the slum. Besides the knowledge he had, he was super kind! In 2 hours he took us on a relaxed pace through the slum, we had plenty of time to enjoy and interact with people in community. Highly recommended to this amazing company.Written January 28, 2019

Being an expatriate based in India I am often recommending various tours to people visiting Delhi and on this occasion I recommended the Old Delhi tour. The owner / founder Ravi guided us through the streets of Old Delhi and shared his knowledge of the various landmarks that we visited. His knowledge of the area is outstanding, he provides a truly ‘local experience’ and authentically and passionately explains everything in considerable detail. The tour is suitable for all ages, is safe and presents a great opportunity to be guided by local experts. It is worth noting that Ravi was raised at Sanjay Colony, which is considered to be a slum, and he has worked to the point where he has established this already thriving company. With 50% of earnings being returned to the community, I will be supporting Ravi and his team in the future. Pretty much the best way to see Old Delhi, and other places, as mentioned on the company’s website.

Walking through the slum with Ravi our guide, was a great experience. We met so many friendly and smiling people in Sanjay Colony. It was incredible to learn about the life of slum in a big city and the way they are doing the tour is well organized. Thank you Ravi for organizing and changing our perception.

We booked the Slum Tour guided by Kavita. Due to the fact that she was born in this area, her knowledge of the life there was just impressing. She showed us around gave us every information we were intressted on. Most important for me, was that the tour is for a good purpose. 80% of the ticket is for the Non Profit Organisation who helps building schools and so on.
Thank you Kavita and Co! We will defenitly recommand this tour!
Ps. Bring some extra chocolate with for the kids! You will make with this small gesture a great joy

It was a privilege to go together with Ravi to the Colony Slum. We saw the historical places in Delhi and it was good to combine it with this tour. Totally something else: real life. Ravi explained everything and gave us answers to all (many!) questions we asked.

Our friend recommended to do the tour with Understanding India Tours. Prior to the trip, Ravi was quick to communicate. We told him a general idea of where we wanted to go and he came back with a detailed itinerary of Delhi-Agra-Jaipur. He organized local guides in the towns who were very informative and another guide Deepak who was with us during entire tour and made our tour so easy to communicating local guides and available for us 24x7. We felt very safe with our driver and loved the ease of traveling around India without having to coordinate taxis, buses or trains. The WiFi connection in the car was a bonus! We highly recommend this company for your next trip!
P.S. - All staffs are amazing in the company but ask Ravi if he can guide you himself. We got recommendations to visit Delhi-Agra-Jaipur with hime but he was unavailable during our visit.

My husband and myself were planning for India trip and my brother recommended for Ravi to book the tour from him. We had a superb two week tour of Kerala - from Mumbai to Kochi to Munnar to Thekkady to Alleppey, Kumarakom, Marari Beach, Kochi and Delhi . We loved the friendly people, the wonderful food, fabulous scenery, wildlife, sounds of the jungle, spectacular tea plantations and an insight in to the daily lives of villagers and the backwaters. At beginning Ravi was really helpful and responsive in shaping the itinerary and checking in with us and he surprised us when he personally came to escort us for entire tour from Mumbai to Delhi. The hotels we stayed were the best, and a great finishing tour of slum tour in Delhi. We had very knowledgeable guides in all cities to provide the best local experience of their cities along with accompanied by Ravi. Our driver Krishna was fabulous with the roads and experts in Kerala. Thank you so much to Ravi and his all guides for making our time so memorable in India.

This was the second time with Understanding India Tours - this time for a longer tour (2 weeks). Our Golden triangle and slum tour was superb. Everything was organised to perfection by founder ravi kumar - great choice of hotels, excellent driver, guide and an overall tour co-ordinator who was in regular contact to ensure that everything was going well. They are very flexible and will do all they can to organise the tour around your needs. They have lots of insight as to which hotels, which rooms and which attractions to see at which time. Highly recommended just book with them with helping community in the underprivileged area of delhi where founder lived all of his childhood.
