I did this tour with a friend at the end of our two week visit to India. We also opted for lunch with a family afterwards.
There were so many great aspects of this tour. Our guide, was the first female guide - Shehnaz - in India, so it was great to hear about life in India from a womans perspective.
Everyone in the colony were so friendly and warm. We had more smiles, and hellos, in the two hours we were there, almost in our whole time in India.
We felt very lucky to visit the Colony and was amazed at the work ethic of everyone who lives there and the wonderful community spirit.
The colony a thriving mini-city and was so fantastic to see and experience. Our hosta fir lunch provided an incredibly beautiful curry and warmly shared with us stories of their life.
Meeting at Connaight Place is great, as you get experience if the metro and confidence to do other trips (which we did).
This was a highlight of our trip. Highly, highly recommended. And ask for Shehnaz as she is a terrific guide with so much generous knowledge to share. She walks through the colony like a celebrity and received and gave many hugs along the trip.

As the children were not at school due to a public holiday ,we had great company 👍. It was a real pleasure to meet with the people. We were made very welcome and had a great time. We have been with this company in Mumbai, they put a lot of the excursion money back into the community. What a great company.

We participated in the Sanjay Colony (slum) tour in New Delhi, and the least we can say is that it was truly mind-expanding and heartwarming for us, whilst being profoundly empowering for the local community.
We visited many parts of this fascinating "city inside the city", such as a local primary school, a hindu temple and the community's hospital, which are as humble as they are full of life, smells, colours and stirringly beautiful children and people who made us feel very welcome in their living space, offering us their sincere smiles and coming up to us to hold our hands throughout the visit.
Our guide Shehnaz, a young woman from Delhi, as well as her intern Kavita, a Sanjay Colony native, were absolutely lovely, knowledgeable, friendly and full of love and respect for the colony's unique culture and people, which made for an amazingly insightful tour presenting both the obvious difficulties of this underprivileged community, but also its inherent beauty, spirituality and liveliness.
We're so thankful, this experience honestly couldn't have been better. Reality Tours is such an impactful and important project which brings jobs, wealth and progress to local communities as well as awareness to privileged travellers.
Thank you all so much!

We are a family of six and we went on the Sanjay Colony Tour with Vijay who still lives with his family in this part of Delhi. Before booking the tour we were not completely sure if it's a good idea to visit a so called slum but the fact that the guides come from this community, that photographs are not allowed and that 80 % of the fee is invested in a training project for young people in this community convinced us in the end.
Vijay and one trainee (sorry, I can't remember her name) met us at the metro station and walked us to Sanjay Colony. Vijay is an excellent guide, super friendly, easy going and he gave us loads of interesting information about life in this community.
We learned about health, education, religion, working conditions and life in Delhi as a whole. It was very interesting, inspiring and it shows that we have to ask ourselves questions concerning our way of life and the impact on others.
He also encouraged us to ask questions which he readily answered. We also visited the Reality Gives office where young people from the community can have training in English, Computer and Life Skills which clearly is very useful for those who want to improve their opportunities.
After the tour Vijay took us to his house where we met his parents and where we had a very good lunch.
I can only say that you should not hesitate to go on this tour. Thank you so much Vijay,
you are an excellent guide and we wish you and Reality Tours the very best.
If ever we come back to India you will see us again on one of your tours !

The thought of a tour through a slum in Delhi was very exciting to me particularly after reading the book Shantaram. I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea but it was a truly interesting insight into the colony and doubly valuable for the youth attempting to make a better life for themselves. We used Reality Gives to book our tour which was led by a young woman Hema who Grew up in a nearby slum. Hema was a most knowledgeable and inspiring guide who obviously loved her work. We travelled by metro with Hema to Sanjay colony and then headed to an area there where locals sorted material off cuts to on sell or use as stuffing and then to a printing business. We visited a local home, a doctors surgery, a temple and school, meandering through the rabbit warren of streets. The final stop is the Reality Gives headquarters in Delhi where Hema explained the positive impact of the organization through teaching local youth. You can also buy great gifts at the end which further assists in funding the organization. A must do tour, not only for a fascinating experience, but a great contribution to the local community. It was very affordable at about $23.00 Australian dollars. And yes, it’s safe. 🙏🏻

We done this tour the day before we left Delhi. I wasn’t convinced that it was something I wanted to see but I have to say I am very glad I did. It gives you a very real perspective and insight into how so many people live in the Sanjay colony. Vijay was our guide, he was very informative and explained about the work that goes on there, garment recycling and lots of manufacture and we seen a lot of Next clothing labels on the floor. He said about the number of people living in the area, approximately 50,000! in around 25 acres of land. We went into a house to see how the family in there lived then climbed up some very steep steps onto their roof to get a birdseye view of the community. We seen many of the children from the school who were very friendly and appeared a lot happier than kids at school here do! Vijay showed us the doctors surgery and explained about health issues that can be present in this environment and how they are dealt with on a day to day basis. There are very few families which have toilets and washing facilities and we seen several children rolling barrels of water through the narrow alleys to take to their homes. It truly is warren like and you would not want to try and navigate it without a guide. We ended the tour by visiting a couple of classes where several women were learning computer skills, then into the office of reality tours. Vijay explained as we were going around that 80% of the money collected from the tours goes back into Sanjay Colony, that the guides have all been brought up there and indeed many of them still live there so they are exceedingly knowledgeable and passionate about the colony. You are not allowed to take photos which I do totally understand but I so wish we could have as people being able to see for themselves how so many people live would be a very sobering experience indeed. It was a truly fascinating insight into life in such a colony and a most unforgettable experience for us all.

We had a great experience. Such a learning tour, full of information, nice stories and lovely contacts with people leaving in the slums. Worth while doing this tour to have an authentic view of the life in the slums to remove potential prejudices and learn how much dignity and generosity you find there. The guide, Hema, is fully of enthusiasm and very knowledgeable to give invaluable insights to make the visit very exciting.

The first day of our India adventure we put ourselves into the knowledgeable hands of Reality India to experience the Sanjay Colony, a small slum in the south of Delhi. Signing up online was easy, directions to the meeting point straight forward. Our guide Chittaranjan met us on time and in a friendly, outgoing and professional manner. A 20-minutes metro ride took us to Sanjay.
We were introduced to the doctor who provides free service out of his miniature 3 square meters office. We shook many tiny hands of tiny children welcoming us with their brightest smiles (not begging). We learned about residential life (yes Amazon prime delivers the next day) and about small scale cloth recycling businesses. We passed cows, dogs, no cats, no chickens and enjoyed the view from a rooftop. We were invited to warm our hands on a small fire and witnessed how despite the challenging living conditions, the slum remains an area charged with positive energy and strong community.
80% of the profits of Reality Tours & Travels are used to support local development projects. So not only did we have an authentic travel experience but we also learned about our guides Chittaranjan dream to become an artist and supported empowerment through education. We were never asked to buy anything and followed the website's suggestion to donate pens for the school project.
We didn't experience any bad smells. Good, closed walking shoes are recommended. Out of respect for the residence Reality Tour asks not to take pictures but offers some on their website.
Because we enjoyed this tour so much, we booked the Old Delhi Street Food Tour two days later with the student Naresh, who lives at Sanjay Colony. The food was super tasty with a great variety. Both tours are highly recommended.

Myself and a friend booked this tour and absolutely loved it. We spent 2 days in Delhi and this was by far the highlight of our trip. It is a must do for anyone visiting Delhi. You will have the chance to see both sides of the city and will have your perception of ‘slums’ changed. Our guide Sam was absolutely brilliant. He was very informative and we felt totally safe the entire time we were on the tour. Thank you Sam! We recommend you try the Chai tea at the end of the tour. Best chai tea ever!! Unfortunately now I’m disappointed by every chai tea I’ve tasted since. Thank you so much for this experience. Leanne and Romina

I am wanting to do this morning tour and than go straight to another tour (by same company) meeting at connaught place but i am nervous to catch the train back to connaught place by myself from the Slum Colony. Will the guide help me buy a train ticket back to connaught place and help me get on the right train? I am a solo female traveller and it will be my first morning in Delhi by myself.

I also traveled alone when I took the slum tour, the metro is very easy to use.
Nothing to worry, the metro has a female only cart.
And the guide will tell you how to get back to connaught place.
If you don't want to take the metto you can always take Uber.
Enjoy your trip.

Im interested in the Tour with Lunch. How long is the entire tour including lunch? Do you have to find transport back to hotel from lunch house? With the 'Cooking Experience' Tour do you also see the slums for 3 hours or is it just a cooking class? Can you choose what you would like to make to eat? I have dietary requirements. Thank

We asked to reschedule the day before and that was no problem either. Got a prompt response too.
I'm planning a trip of 14 of us, I have read that there is a max of 6 per tour. Is there one tour at each time or is there multiple tours going in the morning/afternoon? Thanks in advance.

You can definitely do tours with larger groups of people. The group will be divided into a few smaller groups so that there will be a maximum of 6 people per guide.

Take a taxi to Connaught Place. The metro entrances are all numbered around the circle with big blue signs. I believe you meet your guide at #1. Then you and your guide take the metro together to Sanjay. The Taj Palace will get you a taxi, and there are also taxis and auto rickshaws you can hire yourself just outside the main hotel gate :)

I see that this tour meets up at Departure Point Connaught Place, Rajiv Chowk Metro Station Gate 1. India is new so as much as I want to take this tour I am scared of getting lost traveling to the Metro station with all the scam I hear about Tuk Tuk driving taking you to another place Is it fairly easy to get there? Can my Hotel help me arrange this tour?
