It was supposed to be just a ride between some places on our itinerary, or at least I thought so. Then we met Ashan to make final arrangements and his big smile immediately put away any doubts about what this adventure is going to be like. Starting early next morning and then every step of the way he was our reliable driver, knowledgeable guide, friendly advisor and travelling companion. Yes, we are heading to the Sigiriya Lion's Rock, but why not make a short stop to see an elephant bathing in the lake? On our way to Kandy a small detour will take us to the Nalanda Gedige, 1000+ years old temple at the geographical center of Sri Lanka! Nobody in our group is vegetarian, but we happily took Ashan's advice and went to a vegetarian restaurant in Kandy, by that time knowing that it can't go wrong. So, dear Ashan, thank you for everything and hopefully we will meet again on some new trip around Sri Lanka.

We spent two most amazing days travelling with him, from Sigiriya to Polonnaruwa and then to Kandy. Not only did we see what was planned, but due to his attention to details and good care of passengers, we saw much more. We are a Belgian family (father and 2 adult children) travelling through Sri Lanka in summer 2023. We got in contact with Ashan through our hotel in Sigiriya (Sigiri Asna Nature Resort, also recommended) that organised airport pick-up. Ashan also drove us around in Sigiriya and brought us to Kandy. Thanks to Ashan, our drive to Kandy became an interesting day trip by including stops in Dambulla fruit and vegetable market (little known but definitely worth the visit), Dambulla cave temple, Nalanda Gedige (the geographic centre of Sri Lanka) and, upon our request, a spice garden (which was more of a tourist shop so not worth it) I can only be very positive about Ashan as a safe driver, a knowledgeable guide and a pleasant person. We especially appreciated his sense of humor, his flexibility for our ad hoc requests and his contribution to defining the most interesting stops leaving final decisions in our hands.

Ashan was a very special tour guide. We were so happy that he accompanied us on our journey. He was reliable and always had a plan B if plan A did not work as expected. Even when my trip ended differently than planned, I could count on Ashan's support, even when he was no longer our guide. We were lucky enough to find Ashan on arrival at the Anuradhapura train station. He drove us to our hotel and offerred to give us a tour of all the sights in town the next day. After he even drove us to Trincomalee, Sigiriya and Kandy over the next week. Very friendly and good conversation. Saw a lot of great things we otherwise would have missed out on. Really went above and beyond for our best experience!

Serendipity works in wonderful ways and it certainly worked in our favour with finding Ashan. I can’t imagine how we could have had a more wonderful time in Sri Lanka without him. He quickly went from our driver to our tour guide to our really good friend. Travandgo, all the way! Ashan, came highly recommended by our first stop at the Sigiri Asna Nature Resort. He has been working with them for the past 7 years and is who they sent pick us up in Colombo. What initially impressed us the most was the quality of driving but moreover his ability to help us with anything and everything . He found us a reputable guide at the lions head rock that could speak amazing English and had held a government permit to lead guides. On his recommendation we went on a safari. He knew a trusted company with a high quality driver and off-road vehicle. We invited him along on the safari and his personality was so much fun to be around. He truly is an ambassador of Sri Lankan culture and never tired of answering our nonstop questions. We had a rough itinerary of cities and dates we’d travel. I had the first part of the trip booked for hotels but nothing after the first few days. Thankfully, Ashan knew our party so well after a few days that he could make suggestions on the sort of experiences and places we’d enjoy as a group. I really put the trip into his hands at that point and we worked out some really great experiences. Some of the big experiences thanks to Ashan; -the best beaches around Galle (from helping local fishermen, to sunbathing, to drinks/food, to surf watching) -he found us a super hip french hotel in Galle with great French cuisine. After finding online, he called up and negotiated both rooms for $80usd cheaper than online. -a boat safari which included stops on an island to visit a hermit who makes/sells cinnamon, a Buddhist sanctuary with blessings, mangroves, etc. -numerous quick roadside stops; tea time at a tea estate, waterfalls, cultural stories tied to places, souvenir shopping, etc. My wife had to leave midway through the trip for work and Ashan handled night driving back to Colombo very well. I went with and never felt worried for a moment. We surmised that he probably drove somewhere between 26-32 hours in 10 days and he never once seemed tired or distracted. I'm a super picky driver and don't often find myself the passenger but I really enjoyed sitting shotgun with Ashen. He even let me play all my own tunes! Local flooding had blocked our way to Kandy but without breaking a sweat, Ashan calmly found us a way around. His knowledge of the island's infrastructure is unbelievable but his ability to communicate with other Sri Lankans to get us out of trouble was amazing. The time he’s put behind the wheel truly shows. I also must mention that taking a private van across Sri Lanka isn't only an affordable prospect for a small group but is also such a great way to experience the country and its people. One of my favourite things about Ashan was that anywhere we stopped he knew someone or would actively meet someone. It made for some of the most special trip memories. My personal favourite interaction was meeting a 16 year girl who washed cars on the side of a mountain waterfall. She was undocumented and had never been away from this small patch of land. He got her whole life story and told us all about her and her dreams of the future. My mom’s favourite memory was us randomly meeting an old friend of his from his village far from home and how happy they were to see each other. His Toyota Hiace van was excellent! Very comfy, clean, well maintained, and a smooth ride. We caught him paying attention to the small things like tire pressure and oil. That attention to detail ensures a safe drive. Travandgo, might be a one man operation at this point, but with a man like Ashan, it's one heck of an operation. I really hope to make it back in the future to see how well this young man has grown his own business. Thanks for a trip of a lifetime Ashan!

What an amazing guide. Picked us up from Anuradhapura to take my wife and her family to Kandy for some sightseeing. Truly went above and beyond. Had some great conversations as well.

The experience with Ashan was amazing. He is a perfect driver and he was really kind with us all the time. We had a lot of fun with him and also he was able to help us to organize our trip in Sri Lanka. With him we were able to taste different street food and we visited amazing and not touristic temples or lakes. He is able to spot easily wild animals also. Really recommended for a beautiful experience in SL!!!

Ashan drove us around Anudaphura. He was really nice and patient. He told us a lot about the city and all the Buddhist sites. What is more, he occurred to be extremely helpful - he arranged a driver for us when we were staying at the seaside (even though he was in a different part of the country)🥰
