"In Croatia, there are no measuring cups; we cook by feel."
And with those words from our chefs, Sanja and Anastasia, our cooking class commenced. Located 50 minutes by bus from Korcula in the village of Blato, Sanja's half day cooking class was well worth the journey from Korcula and skipping a day at beach.
Sanja kindly met us at the bus station in Blato and after a brief 5 minute drive, we found ourselves standing in her modern, commercial grade kitchen in the basement of her home in the hills, overlooking Blato. After a short introduction, some homemade juices and snacks, we donned our aprons and got to work.
Over the next 2+ hours, we prepared bruschetta (made with hummus and unbelievably delicious), handmade pasta with tomato sauce and the traditional Lumblija cake, a recipe which dates back to Napoleon's occupation of Korcula. Most of the ingredients were plucked from her garden (fresh tomatoes, lemon, basil, etc.) out front and Sanja and Anastasia demonstrated immense patience as they worked with us.
It's hard to describe but if you have ever longed for the experience of cooking with a distant Aunt in the "old country," this is it. Even though we were strangers, we shared countless laugh as Sanja and Anastasia guided us through the traditional method of rolling Korcula macaroni. Our teens LOVED the experience and didn't look at a smartphone once while in the kitchen.
The best part, of course, was actually enjoying the meal. The local wine was free flowing and because we enjoyed our meal so much, Sanja even whipped up some more pasta for our hungry teenagers (one ate 4 bowls of it).
Unbeknownst to us prior to the class, Sanja's actually a culinary powerhouse. Not only is she one of the few chefs in Croatia permitted to sell the Lumlija cakes (the government buys them as gifts for diplomatic events), her homemade pasta's used by a lot of the hotels in Dubrovnik and Split. Sanja shared that her kitchen had already produced 600 kg of homemade pasta that year for use in hotels. After making just a small batch, I can't even imagine how much pasta that is.
As the cooking class ended around 3, we had almost two hours to wander Blato afterwords. Highly recommend visiting the Blato 1902 d.d. tasting room for some wine tasting and checking out some of the shops in town.

Sanya and her daughters were absolutely delightful and we really felt like we were with family. Sanya is a fantastic cook and teacher. Not only does she cook but shares the history and culture about the food and ingredients. A must do in Korcula

Great host, pasta making & meal ending in an enjoyable balcony chat and unique walk down the hill to the bus. A memorable day.

I would like to book for this cooking class in the first week of September, but I am only one person. Can I be part of a group?
