- Pnickels6130 contributionsFirst-rate and educational tour of the Civil Rights Movement in BirminghamClay did an excellent of keeping us informed about the Civic Rights Movement within the city of Birmingham. As a former tour guide at the Holocaust Memorial Museum in DC and a history major, I can promise you this tour is first-class. Learned some much today, I strongly recommend taking this tour.Written December 30, 2024
- Terry M0 contributionsHeat wrenching and inspiringMike was a great guide and narrator. Very professional. Great knowledge of the city civilian rights and told some really heart wrenching stories that were hard to hear but also inspiring. Would book with Red Clay Tours again.Written December 29, 2024
- S8960RLbarbc0 contributionsImportant & PowerfulWe had the pleasure of receiving a tour with Mike on a road trip stopover in Birmingham. He is a gifted narrator. We found him to be poignant, well-informed, and warm. He shares the stories of Birmingham's pivotal role in the Civil Rights Movement, making the events of the past feel immediate and deeply relevant. We were struck by his ability to convey both the struggles and the triumphs with a perspective that felt both personal and universal. This tour is more than an exploration of history; it’s a vital lesson in humanity, courage, and resilience. It’s history that is important for all to know about—especially Americans. We highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Birmingham.Written December 18, 2024
- Mathildadances0 contributionsBrilliant, "a must do" experienceA brilliant experience- Mike was warm, immensely informative and a great storyteller. The balance of walking and driving is extremely comfortable, particularly in a briskly cold Birmingham day...Written November 22, 2024
- 801maryleer0 contributionsYour was a success. Our guide, Mike, was excellent. He was very knowledgeable, it was easy to follow along with his narrative, provided us with a list of resources to pursue in our own. Highly recommend this tour.Written November 10, 2024
- Fearless7545120 contributionsExcellent civil rights tour of BirminghamThis is an excellent and very informative civil rights tour. Birmingham history is presented chronologically from 1865-1965 in a fascinating and moving mix of facts interwoven with stories that make the facts come alive. We were driven through neighborhoods like Dynamite Hill and Collegeville (where Rev. Shuttlesworth's church, the Bethel Baptist church is located). There were a good number of stops where we left the van to see things up close and learn more details. Even if you know the general history, you will learn more from the stories Mike tells. I highly recommend taking Mike's tour.Written November 1, 2024
- Q6531NMsamr0 contributionsRecommend 100%!I cannot recommend this tour enough - if you're visiting Birmingham, you should 100% do this! Mike was a fantastic tour guide, and provided us with so many in-depth and incredibly powerful stories of Birmingham's Civil Rights history - particularly the amazingly brave work of Fred Shuttlesworth. I couldn't help but walk away from this experience feeling so humbled and moved by the stories we heard and the places we got to be through this experience. You owe it to yourself to do this if you're in town - you'll take away so much from it. And Mike - if you ever read this, you weren't kidding about that special dog at Gus's! Thanks for the suggestion and the great conversation! :)Written October 26, 2024
- stephc98760 contributionsDo this tour! This tour was incredible. Highly recommend. We went through some many different sites and the tour guy was great. Very interested tour with lots of details.Written October 26, 2024
- stanmv0 contributionsTop notch tour!!If you are in Birmingham, definitely do not miss taking a tour with Red Clay Tours! Our civil rights tour was fantastic. Our guide Mike is incredibly knowledgeable and makes history come alive. He is clearly passionate about the subject, and it shows when he talks. His depth of knowledge is incredible; he even texted us a list of books and podcasts that he has found particularly useful when learning more about Birmingham's civil rights journey. The 3 hours flew by, and everyone from my high schooler to my 90 year old mom loved it. Time well spent with a terrific guide!Written October 21, 2024
- d2photo63250 contributionsGreat history tour of Birmingham. Highly RecommendClay was our tour guide. HIGHLY recommend the tour. While we were warned about the nature of the tour (civil rights and the bombings that took place), Clay gauged our interest and proceeded with our (Give it ALL to us request) we were not disappointed. We wanted the unfiltered version of the history surrounding the Civil Rights movement that took place in Birmingham. Excellent stops, both walking and driving around town that give you a full picture of the city. Areas you may not go to on your own for various reasons. Clay also gave us some suggestions on films to watch regarding the areas we went to. We have watched both (freely available on YouTube for those wondering). Do yourself a favor and take the time with this company. This is a small group experience and not a group on a tour bus.Written October 12, 2024
- chrissZ674NX0 contributionsAn important and insightful tour.A really insightful, sobering and important tour of one of the cities at the center of the civil rights movement. Every American should take this tour.Written October 7, 2024
- Lee W0 contributionsA must tour to do.Excellent tour that was superbly narrated by Mike. Saw the places that we would have never got to see if it was not for this tour. Mike spent time answering questions and had a great knowledge. We found it very interesting and educational. Thanks Mike.Written October 7, 2024
- Steffi B0 contributionsPowerful and Well-Organised Civil Rights Tour with an Expert Guide. We had a fantastic experience on this civil rights walking and riding tour. Mike, our guide, was outstanding—his deep knowledge as a local expert brought the harrowing and inspiring stories of the civil rights movement to life in a way that felt both powerful and necessary. The tour was well-organised, with very clear and easy joining information. It also offered the perfect combination of walking and riding, allowing us to visit key historic sites while comfortably taking in everything by bus. Highly recommended!Written October 1, 2024

This tour was fabulous! Clay does a great job showing you the highlights and speaking to the city’s history. Enjoyed all the photo stops, especially the included stop and your at Sloss Furnace site. Picked up from hotel. Learned a lot, left w Birmingham locally made snacks which was nice touch.

Red Clay Enterprises are professional and knowledgeable. Our guide, Clay, enjoys his job and made it fun and interesting for us. We drove to different sights throughout the city and then walked around learning facts and history. I highly recommend this tour. It is the best way to learn about Birmingham on this three hour tour. Also, they will pickup and drop off at your hotel within the city.

Clay is very knowledgeable about Birmingham and was able to answer any questions we had. A great experience for the start of our girlfriends get away. This gave us a good overview of a city we didn't know anything about and he offered us many tips about things to do and places to eat.

We took the Fight for Rights tour and I can't recommend it highly enough. Our tour guide was Clay who was a wealth of information, not only about Birmingham's sorted past but also about the Civil Rights movement in general. I also appreciated the knowledge he shared about Birmingham's economic history and how that has contributed to what Birmingham is today. This is a must experience for anyone who is interested in understanding how our country has devolved into the partisan battleground that currently defines us.

My husband found out about this natl historical landmark that explains the history of the iron industry in Birmingham. Inside movie and gift shop. Outside walking trail weaves in and out of the old factory. If weather is cool, take a jacket! Very interesting part of the city’s past and present. Small admission.

We took the Red Clay Tour in June on a stop during a 22-day train tour. The Civil Rights tour of Birmingham, from all the rest, is what stands out in memory after several weeks of hindsight. This was one tour the quality of which cannot be overstated. Clay has encyclopedic knowledge of the history, although he doesn’t sound like an encyclopedia. His explanations and descriptions are more like an understated passion; still, he can answer any possible question. Be sure to ask him for a bottle of the local ginger soda. It’s startling and delicious. It’s too bad that every major city doesn’t have a Red Clay tour.

Clay enterprises, father and son tour business. Brilliant, this particular tour run by the son and like the father very informative, whilst taking us around full of interesting information and facts and they also welcome any info that they hadn't covered, very obliging when needed toilet break, and whilst traveling to next sight see, he pointed out all places of interest and the history. Would highly recommend them. The father does the civil rights tour which I also recommend excellent.

Will we see different things on the Historical Highlights tour compared with the Civil Rights Tour? We’ve signed up for the Civil Rights Tour and were wondering if we should also do the Historical tour.

Is there a lot of walking with this tour
Written July 19, 2018
The walking is not excessive at all. Clay transports you from place to place and then you spend a bit walking around that specific site.
