This trip of a lifetime started with three good decisions ... my interests pushed me to concentrate on two areas, Zhangye and Tianshui (driven largely by Danxia National GeoPark outside Zhangye and Maijishan Grottoes outside Tianshui). I decided to get a personal guide in order to make the most of limited time (6 days). From researching Tripadvisor I contacted Angel Tours by email and Steven answered almost immediately. This was the first time I had ever used a personal guide over multiple days - I can't recommend it enough - just the companionship and shared experience is sufficient, let alone the timesavings from being with someone who has all the answers and tricks at their fingertips. As Steven and I began to understand each other, I really got into the experience and the majesty and beauty of China began to grow on me. I found Steven to be an excellent professional, obviously very experienced and knowledgable (he is in a select group of about 1800 who have been awarded the Gold Medal for guiding in China). His relaxed manner and friendly nature made him more of a companion than a 'tour guide'. When planning the trip from New Zealand, Steven responded almost instantly, was amenable to change and always had some great suggestions up his sleeve. Meetup was easy-as, and his work associates were excellent (the driver who met me, off his own bat, brought his niece from Teacher's College to the airport to help me). I found the pricing for the guiding and driving very reasonable - the whole guiding/Angel Tours things was brilliant in a money/efficiency sense. Next year I am taking the family to the Dunhuang area and Steven and I have already started talking about his home town. Best of all, I fell in love with China, we are definitely sympatico ... thanks to Steven and Angel Tours for helping in that.

Steven Kang at Angel Tours arranged an incredible experience for us, identifying cultural and natural highlights along the Silk Road from Tianshui to Dunhuang. Steven was responsive from the start and engaged with us in a dialogue to identify what sights we wanted to see, what kind of hotels and restaurants we expected and how long we wanted to travel each day; he even helped us with our China visas. The transportation he arranged was excellent, the hotels met our standards (given our budget-- very good value) and he was knowledgeable about the region. During the over 1,500 km we traveled together (not including the train rides that he arranged separately for us), Steven was always responsive to our group's needs, was patient with us and engaging but not intrusive when we wanted to do our own things. I highly recommend him and his team if you want a special, customised, unforgettable experience on the Silk Road!

I booked a 2 day solo tour of Dunhuang with Steven only to have my plans impacted by a recent COVID outbreak in the region. I cannot recommend this tour or his services more highly! In a rapidly changing situation, Steven helped me figure out plans for onward travel and even followed up to make sure I arrived safe and sound. Even though in the end I only got to see the city and its sights for one day, it was more than worth it for the insight, historical knowledge and convenience he brought to the experience. Mogao Caves were more than worth the trip out west!

The natural landscape and cultural history of Northwest China are worth visiting. Every scenic sport is unique, especially the Rainbow Mountain in Zhangye, which is spectular and incredible

We found Steven through a colleague who recently took a similar trip. We are a group of 6 people and we are very happy with the itinerary and service that Steven provided for us. He has been very professional, patient and proactive to our needs. He also has a wealth of knowledge about the region, so we learned a lot from him. The hotels we stayed in and the restaurants we dined in all met or exceeded our expectations. Steven has been a travel agent with plenty of experience in this region. During the 8-day-trip, he was not only arranged the intereting sites of visitings, but also took good care of clients needs. Therefore, we have learnt from him about Chinese history and culture. etc. We had tried delicious foods and beverages.

We enjoyed a perfectly organized 6 days trip from Xining to Qinghai to Dunhuang. With nice weather, nice hotels, a convenient car with a perfect driver. Steven is a highly reliable and very well English speaking guide.

With the distances between points of interest across Gansu (Lanzhou, Zhangye, Dunhuang), and only 5 days to cover it, Steven’s services were indispensable. Ease of travel Mixing high speed train and shuttle we were saving time and traveled comfortably on long legs, while not having to worry about how to get around locally. English speaking Although Gansu’s sites are gaining traction with foreign tourists for a long time, English speaking guides are still rare. Especially if non of you is Chinese speaking, Steven will help out with briefing you on the context and getting you around. Familiar with places You are sure to get the authentic dishes, value for your money in hotels, and a quick fix to ideas that pop up. Plus, Steven is a comfortable person to have around.

We did a super condensed 3 day custom tour of Gansu Province. As foreigners, we were concerned about the impact of coronavirus travel changes to our trip. Our guide Steven ensured everything was smooth and effortless. We never had to line up for tickets or worry about where we were going to be picked up. Steven took charge of all communication with hotels, scenic staff, restaurants and transport and was sensitive to our needs I.e. frequent bathroom breaks, constant photo taking, need for coffee. We never felt rushed. We started in Zhangye, and visited both Rainbow Mountain as well as the Pingshanhu geopark. The view was breathtaking. In Dunhuang, we went to the Crescent Moon oasis in the sand dunes and went again next morning to catch the sunrise. The famous Mogao caves were also terrific. The great thing is both of these locations are very close to the city itself and not hard to get to. If you want a customized tour of Gansu, this is would be solid choice.

After looking at all the options, seeing what other tours were doing and asking friends who have been; I ended up choosing this itinerary: Day 1: Lanzhou Arrival - Lanzhou Museum - Evening train to Zhangye Day 2: Pingshan Lake Grand Canyon - Zhangye National Geopark Day 3: Zhangye - Jiayuguan Pass - Great Wall Museum Day 4: Sand dunes & Crescent Moon Spring - Mogao Caves Day 5: Sunrise at Sand dunes and Dunhuang Museum and Departure Sent this to Steven and he quickly got me a quote and helped me arrange everything- from English guides in the Mogao Caves, to reserving tickets, and finding good hotels. We didn’t have to worry about anything, it was really convenient to have a car since it’s a pretty packed trip so we didn’t waste time trying to figure out how to get to one place to another. Overall, to visit the highlights of the Gansu province, a private tour is really the best way to go and didn’t come out too expensive. Compared to group tours, this private tour was only slightly more expensive. Recommend doing this trip with 4-6 people so you can easily share the expenses. The sand dunes and Mogao grottoes was our highlight! Steven made sure we got to see all of this, even if we slightly varied of our itinerary because we missed our train the first night. (Life happens) Lastly, Steven made sure we ate well! Lanzhou Beef Noodle Soup is famous in this region and we ate it a lot.

We had a wonderful trip that was organized and guided by Steven, The trip included two provinces - Gansu and Sichuan. It was a very interesting 9 days trip, that started in Dunhuang and finished im Chengdu. The trip was very well organized , including hotels , alll the program and Steven is a perfect English-speaking and very informative guide. Also all the discussion of the trip program and all the communication before the trip by e-mails eas excellent . We highly recommend !!!

Dunhuang was a truly magical setting. The magnificent sand dunes surrounding the city on the horizon combined with the extremely rich and unique history and culture of the area makes it truly one of the most special places in China and the world. Steven was an excellent tour guide with a deep knowledge of the area and infectious enthusiasm that enhanced the trip greatly. I felt he truly cared about us getting the best possible impression of his favorite city and it showed in the level of detail and attention he provided to us during our visit.
