My friend and I booked this tour to add to the end of a week-long visit to Shanghai. We were looking to complement our busy city trip with some nature and culture in the beautiful Huangshan.

Our tour guide was Mr. Jack. He was professional, kind, and spoke very good English – but above all, he was extremely positive throughout the 3-day tour and passionate to share his immense knowledge about the area. He led our visit to Tunxi Village, Hongcun Village, and the Yellow Mountain very well. My friend and I felt very comfortable with the pace of the tour, and we really liked how Mr. Jack frequently checked in on us to make any necessary changes to our schedule and itinerary in oder to suit our preferences.

Mr. Jack picked us up from the train station and introduced us to our driver, Mr. Hu, who drove us to each location safely. Our first stop was a local restaurant on Tunxi Ancient Street called Mei Shi Ren Jia. We were positively overwhelmed with the choice and variety of food available, so Mr. Jack chose several dishes for us. The food was absolutely delicious and we ate calmly without rush. Before driving to Hongcun Village, Mr. Jack walked us through the old but well-perserved ancient street of Tunxi. The highlight of this day was the visit to Hu Kaiwen Ink Factory, where we learned how traditional Chinese ink sticks are made.

Hongcun Village was really beautiful and Mr. Jack took some wonderful photos of us and the scenery which he later shared with us. This village was very interesting to explore and I would have liked to stay overnight here if we hadn’t already arranged our accommodation in the countryside. We slept at the Pig’s Inn Boutique Hotel. Absolutely beautiful location and a very unique experience. Mr. Jack arranged a short but wonderful morning bike ride around the countryside before our drive to the Yellow Mountain.

The hike around the Yellow Mountain was spectacular. The paths are paved and consist mostly of steps, but there are lots of places to rest and enjoy the view, so it is challenging but comfortable even for people with less hiking experience. We were fortunate to have good weather to enjoy the beautiful scenery and take fantastic photos, but it rained heavily during our sunrise hike on our last day. The hotel we stayed at overnight was big and very clean, and the room was equipped with a heated drying rack for our wet clothes.

Mr. Jack stayed with us until the very end of our trip. He and Mr. Hu dropped us off at Huangshan train station and did not leave until we passed the security check. This trip was very nice and memorable because of the beauty of Huangshan but also because of Mr. Jack’s care and passion as a guide.

I strongly recommend this tour. Thank you!

Our entire trip was outstanding and our guide, April, was an absolute star. We would highly recommend her. Throughout the three days April provided clear, fascinating and in-depth information about the area and the different places we visited and sights that we saw. She was also excellent company and took tremendous care of us - our every need was anticipated and met with great kindness and efficiency. Thankyou April!

For our two nights in Huangshan we stayed at the wonderful Pig's Inn in Bishan which is on the outskirts of the city and felt rural which is what we wanted. The beautiful and historical house and garden, the exceptionally delicious home-made food and the lovely ladies who run this hotel made the stay itself a highlight of our trip.

We also greatly enjoyed our visit to the ancient and interesting Xidi village and a long walk through nearby countryside in the direction of Hongcun village, informed and accompanied by April. We walked alongside a very pretty river surrounded by woods and fields growing several different crops. It was so peaceful (we saw no one else at all for several hours) and a chance to see the local flora and fauna.

Our trip by shuttle bus and cable car to the top of the Yellow Mountain and our stay there overnight was probably the overall highlight of our three days. The walk up and down steps at the top to reach the hotel was quite demanding for my husband as his back causes him pain but the stunning views throughout - especially when the mist parted and the sunset could be seen - were incredibe and entirely worth the climb. The mountains and the autumn foliage were spectacular and quite different from anything we had seen in Europe. The new hotel we spent the night in was very comfortable and had everything we wanted (though it's true the food was more basic than elsewhere). We came home with some lovely photos and some very special and lasting memories of this trip which had been brilliantly organised and adapted to our needs by China Highlights.

Hi there Thanks for sharing your insight of your time in Huangshan. This is April's home town, and what more could you ask for, to spend time there with a local. She is one of our top guides in the area and we were pleased she was there to spend the three days with you. The Pigs Inn, despite the sound of its name is a beautiful and comfortable place to stay. Definitely the moutains and foliage is stunning and glad that you have photos to take home to remind you of your time in the mountains. No doubt you will have a lot to sort through. It's been our pleasure to have helped you plan your trip to cater to your interests and needs. Come and visit us again. Regards CH Customer-care Team

We - 2 families with four children (8, 9, 11) - booked a 3-day-tour with China Highlights in the Huangshan Area.

All communication beforehand with Cecilia went smooth. She was well informed and replied quickly to any questions.

Our tour guide - April - was great. Upon arrival she suggested to chance the schedule in order to avoid the masses of tourists during Summer Break. And this was very helpful as we had no queue at all wherever we went.

April's knowledge about Huangshan was great. She was born here and you can tell that she loves her home. She was very familiar with the surroundings, the botanic and the culture. Apart from providing lots of information for the adults, she always had the children in mind and tried to keep them busy and interested as well. She also showed us interesting things away from the track.

      Our tour included
1st day: arrival in Tunxi, a visit of Old Street in Tunxi, a stay at "International Hotel" in Tunxi
2nd day: visit at Hongcun Village, going up the mountain via cable car, walk to Beihai Hotel and stay at Beihai Hotel
3rd day: hiking to the Grand Canyon and back (3h), walk to the cable car and going down.

We can definitely recommend this tour with China Highligts.

Hi there We were delighted to have helped planned and guided your trip to Huangshan, and to have read the review of your time with April. Indeed she is great to travel with, giving you and the children such insight and knowledge of the area where she was born. I love this trip. We went on mid April and weather was cooled. Our guide Alvin is very tentative and knowledgeable. We stayed in The Pig's Inn and it is just a beautiful ancient house very nicely kept and the staff was wonderful. The food was good. Overall, a very satisfactory trip!

I think we did the 4-day tour...which i would recommend to all, esp. as the weather is not guaranteed at the mountain.

The tour started with pick-up from Huangshan North Railway Station - we had spent a few days at Shanghai before going to Huangshan. David Wang was there and we were driven to lunch and then to Hongchun village, where scenes of the movie "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon" were shot. The weather was excellent and there were many students at the river drawing the village cottages. We toured the village and went visiting to a school and a few of the houses.

Then it was off to the bamboo forest (also featured in the same movie) where they had recently opened a glass bridge. We also went thru another village where residents actually lived, and we saw a villager digging up bamboo shoots (yep, these are the edible ones serve in restaurants) from the forest floor. Very interesting as this was my first time seeing a raw shoot. The day was not over yet. After putting down our stuff at the hotel, David came for us again to bring us to the Old Street for dinner - the restaurant looked like ones of the featured in Chinese kungfu movies. This was followed by window shopping.

The next 3 days was spent visiting Huangshan mountain. We were very lucky to have stayed 2 nights. The first day was rainy and foggy, can't see a single thing. The 2nd day at the mountain, we had sunny weather that one could see everything. Then again, the magic of Huangshan is not just the mountain. One would like to see the mountain, covered partially with clouds, similar to the Chinese paintings.

The 3rd day, we got our wish. At each of the location, we had to wait for about 5-10 minutes for the clouds to clear and then we have about 30 seconds before the clouds cover the mountain again. But it was all worth it, the top of the mountain just visible above the clouds...beautiful!

      Highly recommended.

Hi there Thanks for taking the time to write and sharing your experience. We're glad that you enjoyed yoru time in the mountains, despite the first day being rainy and foggy. However as you said, there is a sense of mystic very similar to the Chinese paintings, and great that you were able to capture that essence. We do hope that you can visit again with us. Wow, where do we start. We travelled a long way, from New Zealand in fact, and organised the trip online which was a breeze! We met Philip our guide at the Huangshan train station, and not only was his English perfect, he was very kind, had amazing knowledge, and we loved every part of our journey with him.

We cannot wait to return to China one day and Philip would be the only person we would want to travel with us.

We would highly recommend this trip to anyone who would like to see rural China at its best and enjoy the beautiful local food and lovely people in the region.

      Thanks again Philip!!

Kia Ora Thanks for sharing your experience with us here. New Zealand is indeed far, and so glad that your found organising this trip online a breeze. Gread that you enjoyed exploring this region of China - a country so vast with so much to offer. We do hope that you can come again, to explore more of the countryside, it's people and food. We had heard of this place, but seeing it in person is incredible.
The views that can be seen are unique, as is the view of the sunrise.
On the top the paths are well managed and, despite the large amount of people, we managed to move without too many problems.
I recommend to sleep at least one night at the top to appreciate the sunrise, an indescribable show.
It takes a little luck with the weather (there are often clouds), but it is worth the risk.
Our travel agency, China Highlights was perfect, better than that it is impossible.
Our guide, Alvin, was professional and very kind. He helped us to better reorganize the time available (the first day there was bad weather at the top),
allowing us to see everything with the right times.

      A trip to do !

Our China Highlights experience went very smoothly. April was our tour guide and she allowed us to experience Huangshan in a very comfortable, informative way. She helped with the hotel, money transfer, and flying out of the airport afterwards. We are very thankful to have been able to experience the mountains and local villages with her! Thank you April!

Our guide, Alvin, was very good at attending to our needs. The very hot weather at the foot of the mountain was not pleasant, but Alvin was very flexible and understanding in rearranging our itinerary to better fit the circumstances. His English was perfect. He also had well-established connections everywhere we went in Huangshan, but he did not let his connections pressure us into going to any shop or buying anything we were not interested in buying. Huangshan mountains is such a unique masterpiece of nature. The sunrise on the mountain top was mesmerizing. Overall, a great vacation.
