Amusingly Ridiculous
Nov 2018 • Couples
Don't be fooled, this is a tourist trap.

Your "tour" starts with 30 other people in a bus, you'll be driven about 10 minutes out of town where there are several other groups doing the exact same "tour" thing and then it will dawn on you, you're caught in a somewhat expensive tourist trap. The busses just drive around you with headlights on bringing new groups into rotation. You will have to stand up for the first 60 minutes while someone with a laser points out stars and the zodiac signs. Yes, that is 60 minutes standing up watching the stars while there are busses with headlights driving around. At one point we could not hear the guy with the laserpointer anymore due to the engine noise around us. Next part of the tour are the telescopes. You will be lucky if you have a few minutes of actual viewing time as the celestial objects obviously constantly go out of view and they have to re-adjust them and everybody is basically just cueing up to have a peek. After that you get a cup of warm chocolate milk and some more talking but inside, as other groups move in on the telescopes.

2 star tour, would not recommend.

Not enough telescope time
Nov 2018 • Couples
This tour is decent enough if you set your sights (i.e., temper your expectations) correctly. Some of the 2.5 hours includes the bus ride from and to town--fair enough. However, Space tours is actually running three tour groups at the telescopes at the same time. That means between 60 and 100 people (the tour guide's numbers) have to share the scopes, leaving very little time for each person to look through the telescopes. When it was our group's turn on the scopes, our guide took us to each scope to describe what we would see. We were repeatedly told, "You will have plenty of time to look through the scopes after we talk, so let's move to the next scope." But then we were rushed away when the next group came over for their turn. Most people in our group only had about 10 to 15 seconds of viewing time at each scope they had time to visit.

Consider the time of year you are going and check the moon phases. Even though San Pedro de Atacama is at about 2500m elevation, there is still plenty of atmosphere left. We had a fair bit of haze in the sky, so even the San Pedro light pollution was a factor.

Despite being relatively isolated, the viewing here is not mind blowing except on rare occasions. For example, don't expect to see the milky way with the naked eye--at all. Some nights it will be visible, but this is the exception and not the rule. If you want to take star pictures, drive south out of San Pedro and park off to the side of the road for free. There is nothing special about picture taking here unless you make special arrangements (and pay a lot more) to reserve time on the bigger scopes not used on the public tour.

If you are in town an so inclined, take the tour. But don't expect to see much through the telescopes. Not worth the price, in my opinion.

The Very Best Astronomy Experience
Mar 2018 • Couples
Dr. Maury is a fabulous entertainer and a brilliant guide to the cosmos. He conveys his vast knowledge with humour and holds every second of his guests' attention. This tour is an essential part of any visit to San Pedro. There are other places offering astronomy tours, but we are certain that nothing can match this one. Do it.

Magic!
We did an evening star gazing tour and it was brilliant, probably the highlight of our stay in San Pedro! We were shown lots of constellations with a laser pointer and then looked through the telescopes to see Jupiter, Mars, star clusters and a couple of Nebulae. Breath-taking!

One word of warning: we heard from others that tours can be cancelled later minute due to cloud so prepare to be flexible in planning this in!

Space are a great company and the tour was incredible
Jan 2018 • Couples
We went to the office as soon as we arrived in San Pedro and we were lucky enough to fit on to a tour for the same evening (they are very booked up so wouldn't recommend risking this! I think we squeezed in on a cancellation). The staff were helpful and told us when to come back to confirm for the weather. The organisation was all very smooth. When we arrived at the astronomy site we had two very knowledgeable and funny guides who gave us loads of interesting information about the sky. We also looked through 11 telescopes for more views. The sky is absolutely incredible and well worth doing. At the end we all had a delicious hot chocolate and asked the guides lots of questions.

Wonderful dessert astronomy night
Recommended by our hostel and with a more inviting price as the well-reviewed but almost 3 times more expensive top stargazing tour on TripAdvisor (will not place their name here, but probably you will have found that one already), this tour is just fantastic.

The Space office is on the western part of the main street located at the north side. Look carefully for the space logo (can be found on their website) which is made from wood above the entrance.
The lady at the moment of our booking seemed a bit tired that day but was friendly and don't let this scare you off. Reservations for the star tours always depend on the weather and she was really honest it would be insure. So it was great to hear we could still join even by us being there really late in the afternoon only, and we were put on the reservation list only to pay when coming back at 9pm when they could confirm or cancel the tour due to the weather.
We were lucky, paid at 9pm. Powernapped and came to the group meetup point at 11pm to be picked up by a small bus.

Tour was great. Original French guide amd astronomer by profession is very humouristic, has found a perfect compromise in telling basic to more complex astronomy theories combined with history and mythology both in English and Spanish. He appears to build many of the now 11(?) telescopes on his property by himself. Not only this is a nice detail, it also gives him the options to give these tours with multiple and large telescope views for a more friendly price as commercial telescopes prices would demand a far higher ticket price.

Small discussion inside at the end with tea, coffee or hot chocolate where he answers all your questions.

Definitely recommended!

Amazing stargazing tour!
Nov 2017 • Couples
What a great stargazing tour. Have never done anything like it. Our Canadian guide was hilarious and extremely knowledgeable and passionate. After our overview we had lots of time with the many telescopes. At the end we sat down for a welcome and tasty cup of hot chocolate and q&a. Top notch tour.

Do this! - you won't regret it.
Oct 2017 • Couples
Words don't do this trip justice. Just do it. There are 11 different telescopes that you looks through - and there is time for everyone to look through each one more than once. We saw...galaxies, red stars, white dwarfs, nebulas and even the planet Saturn - all so clear and visible. The guide and astronomer gave fantastic explanations - that helped us to understand what can be seen both with the naked eye and with the telescopes. The astronomer (French) delivered the information to us in a fun/funny way that was easy for us to understand but without dumbing it down too much (I hope). Please do this trip (if it's the only one you do in SP). And book in advance as they get busy. Thanks SPACE team!
