About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- JamesP14980 contributionsA important afternoonVery informative and i must say you end up with a different perspective than before. Pedro was a very good hostWritten October 14, 2022
- Micke L0 contributionsA tour that lasts for more than just 2,5 hReally interesting tour that stays with you much longer than the 2,5 h that the actual walk lasted, in terms of thinking and reflecting. The guide was so passionate and went beyond showing and explaining and actually gave a feeling of how life in favelas is and the struggle. Didn’t feel unsafe what so ever. This tour made a difference to me. Do it!Written January 9, 2020
- oshyiana0 contributionsSee how the other half live.I went to this tous to see how the poor or less fortunate live in rio. When most people think about rio, they think about the beach or copacabana. Just be advised that rio is a beautiful country but all of the people that live there dont live well. The people where very friendly and I felt safe at all time they have a huge statue of Michael Jackson at the top of the building. It is where he made they don't care about us video. And when you see how they live you realize that they dont. Please go to support the people who lived there. It will make you appreciate what we do have in America God bless and enjoyWritten September 3, 2019
- nickyjpreston0 contributionsWorth doing - great guide and tourWe did this on a really rainy day and it was a good wet weather activity (just wear a raincoat)! The guide Felipe was really good - offered lots of insights and was obviously passionate about the community. We visited a kindergarten (take some small money for donations) and two shops (again, we bought some locally made gifts so take cash). Learnt about the history of the area and how the community functions. It was really safe and the people living in the Favela were all very pleasant and friendly. And remember to be respectful when taking pictures (this wasn’t an issue at all). Meeting spot at the Shell was easy (and good in the rain- see pics). If you’re looking to do a Favela tour while in Rio, I’d highly recommend this one. It was very good value.Written May 18, 2019

I can honestly say that any nerves you may have are settled by the amazing tour guide and welcoming occupants. - 447natashas0 contributionsOnly book this Santa Marta Favela Guided Tour!!This guided tour of Santa Marta Favela aka The Michael Jackson Favela is the one to book. Our guide Thiago is from Santa Marta and shared so much of what favela life is like and answered all of our questions. We visited the kindergarten, his family home, saw soooo many favela kitties, met and chatted with the favela community president, and of course went to MJ square! If you want an authentic favela experience Thiago is your guy!Written March 13, 2019

- 112ivanat0 contributionsAmazing experience!A hands-on look at the life in the Santa Marta favela with Thiago who was born and raised there and is the best possible guide for this type of tour. His positive energy just shines. The way he interacts with people who live at the favela is just so nice to look at. The favela residents were very nice and kind. The only thing I would suggest to Thiago is to learn English so he wouldn’t need a translator :-) (even though it was very nice to listen to him speak in Portuguese). He would be able to pass on so much more of his experiences and amazing stories to people on the tour as they certainly get a bit ‘lost in translation’. Well done Thiago. Keep up the good work. We’ll recommend the tour to anyone coming to Rio.Written February 15, 2019

- Sam612930 contributionsInsight to the FavelaThis tour was amazing, we enquires over what’s app and booked through what’s app message. We were picked up by our guide Juan, he was so lovely and kind. He was so chatty to us trying to tell us all information he could think off he answered our questions and the whole way round we felt safe, he knew everyone in the area and would say happy new year and they would all say good morning to us as we walked round. Never at one point did I not feel safe. We loved the Michael Jackson bit and the shops we visited were nice.Written January 6, 2019

The Favela Santa Marta was a very worthwhile way to spend a few hours learning about and having a first hand experience of the way a large portion of Brazil's population lives. The tour was very well led with respect for both Favela residents and visitors. Instructions of what to do and how to behave were clear and helpful. We felt safe even when we encountered young men with macine guns patroling right in our path. We also had the opportunity to see some of the many ways in which the Santa Marta residents are resourceful and how they have been able to improve their community's safety, sanitary conditions and education, and how our presence and fiscal support through this tour are well used. We highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to see the real Rio de Janeiro.

To anyone who's doubtful on whether to visit the Santa Marta Favela during a stay in Rio, i say that to us personally it was a highlight, Thiago (a local tour guide) and his associate Filipe, who accompanied us throughout the tour will portray the true sense of community in the Santa Marta Favela, how it was formed/ created and the development throughout the years.
You will also get the best views of Rio, duration 2 hours.
And finally, such a tour helps build a bridge between the different society fabrics of the city and, most importantly, supports them in an economic sense

We met Pedro our tour guide and simply resonated with this outstanding young man and the story he took us on for almost 3 hours learning about Santa Marta favela and its history and future. We discussed Brazil and its history and he then linked everything together to help educate us even more on fevela life and community. We are so thankful for having the chance to experience this in one afternoon.

We had a wonderful tour of the favela with the lovely Juan. He was such an excellent tour guide, kind, friendly, punctual, informative and very caring. We felt extremely safe at all times thanks to Juan very clearly explaining the do's and don'ts. We took the cable car to the top of the favela, where the views over the city were incredible! Juan was always on hand to help with photos, nothing was too much trouble for him. We trod in the footsteps of Michael Jackson and went to MJ square and saw his statue - incredible! We bought from local shops on the be favela and met a lady who had started in MJ's video. We also had a beer in a local bar! We visited a local house and also had a special
Brazilian drink on the rooftop there, - again incredible! The people we met as we wove around and down the favela via the stone steps and little alley ways were so polite , friendly and welcoming. It was very humbling to be welcomed into their lives in the way that we were. Juan explained the history of the favela which was fascinating and answered any questions we had (We had loads). It was a wonderful and thought-provoking experience and I would highly recommend it to anyone! I was very reticent about going and changed my mind so many times, but eventually booked it just a few hours before we went. I am so glad I did! Thank you Juan and thank you to the residents of Santa Marta.

Eye opening experience which portrayed the comunidade in a way that isn't often shown on TV - a community of people who look after each other. The main concern going into this kind of tour is safety, but there was not a single moment where we felt unsafe. Recommend to take some small notes (<10 reias) but also bring some more cash - there is a souvenir shop with some fantastic art! A great experience and we are really glad we visited, and felt welcomed, in Santa Marta.

My mother and I (NYC natives) had a wonderful time on this tour. As Black women from the inner city, we were able to relate in many ways to the experience of the Santa Marta community. We appreciated the time, care, and knowledge shared with us during our time in the community. We both felt that this tour enhanced our experience in Rio and gave us a more in depth appreciation for the realities of the city. We strongly recommend this tour! Thank you!!

My tour of the favela was an unforgettable experience, and I owe this mainly to our great tour guide Pedro! He welcomed us warmly from the beginning and impressed us with his extensive knowledge and passion for the community.
He managed to introduce us to the history, culture and everyday life of the people here in a very authentic and respectful way. I found it particularly impressive how he also showed us the positives of life in the favela, which are often neglected in the media.
Thanks to his good relations with the residents, we had the opportunity to gain real insights into local life and he answered all our questions patiently. The tour was safe, well organized and gave me a whole new perspective on Rio de Janeiro.
I can highly recommend this tour and especially our guide to anyone who wants to get to know the true heart of this city. Thank you for this unique experience!

This was my first experience in the waters of the Rio Bay and my husband and I had the best time. We booked the the 12pm tour and the trip was vary relaxing and informative on the history of the surrounding area. Our tour guides were warm and welcoming, I recommend this tour for anyone who enjoys sailing on the water and listening to soft tunes.
*I would also note to make sure you wear swimsuits bc there was a portion of the tour that allowed for a swimming moment.

It was a beautiful experience. I went with my two children, ages 9 and 15, and we had a wonderful time, we learned a lot about the local culture. My 9-year-old son was playing soccer, cuddling cats and greeting everyone, including the people from the Command. The guide was clear and very patient, we never felt unsafe.
The only reason I don't give it a 5 is because on the one hand, I don't know how official the tour is, since there is a local company across the street that claims to be the "official guides" of the favela. Secondly, the person who made me feel uncomfortable was a tour attendee who was taking photos of people without first asking for their consent. He took photos of boys, girls, even adults and the guide behind him did not stop him. This situation seemed disrespectful to the local people, as well as potentially risky for everyone.

My husband and I visited Rio for a week for our honeymoon. We did a lot in the week including a sailboat charter and rainforest tour, this was by FAR the highlight of our trip. This tour is extremely educationally based and our guide knew everything about the history, politics and economics about the favelas. We could have listened to him talk for the entire day. We interacted with Santa Maria locals but felt that we properly briefed to do so in a respectful and honoring way. You should not miss this opportunity to understand such a big part of Rio on a new level.
