Really interesting tour that stays with you much longer than the 2,5 h that the actual walk lasted, in terms of thinking and reflecting. The guide was so passionate and went beyond showing and explaining and actually gave a feeling of how life in favelas is and the struggle. Didn’t feel unsafe what so ever. This tour made a difference to me. Do it!

I went to this tous to see how the poor or less fortunate live in rio. When most people think about rio, they think about the beach or copacabana. Just be advised that rio is a beautiful country but all of the people that live there dont live well. The people where very friendly and I felt safe at all time they have a huge statue of Michael Jackson at the top of the building. It is where he made they don't care about us video. And when you see how they live you realize that they dont. Please go to support the people who lived there. It will make you appreciate what we do have in America God bless and enjoy

We did this on a really rainy day and it was a good wet weather activity (just wear a raincoat)! The guide Felipe was really good - offered lots of insights and was obviously passionate about the community. We visited a kindergarten (take some small money for donations) and two shops (again, we bought some locally made gifts so take cash). Learnt about the history of the area and how the community functions. It was really safe and the people living in the Favela were all very pleasant and friendly. And remember to be respectful when taking pictures (this wasn’t an issue at all). Meeting spot at the Shell was easy (and good in the rain- see pics). If you’re looking to do a Favela tour while in Rio, I’d highly recommend this one. It was very good value.

I joined the tour with my wife and my two children (15 and 10). Great experience for them and for us We understood much better the Favelas and the brazilian social and political system And part of the fee goes to support local initiatives like the school Really worth it Thanks Santa Marta Tour

I can honestly say that any nerves you may have are settled by the amazing tour guide and welcoming occupants. The tour guide divulged into the community spirit of this favela and provided a detail insight into an amazing community of people and the history of the favela. This guided tour of Santa Marta Favela aka The Michael Jackson Favela is the one to book. Our guide Thiago is from Santa Marta and shared so much of what favela life is like and answered all of our questions. We visited the kindergarten, his family home, saw soooo many favela kitties, met and chatted with the favela community president, and of course went to MJ square! If you want an authentic favela experience Thiago is your guy!

We truly enjoyed the experience with the guys, very good explanations, fun and sweet. Made the trip one to remember. You can See they care about the people there, and their stories.

A hands-on look at the life in the Santa Marta favela with Thiago who was born and raised there and is the best possible guide for this type of tour. His positive energy just shines. The way he interacts with people who live at the favela is just so nice to look at. The favela residents were very nice and kind. The only thing I would suggest to Thiago is to learn English so he wouldn’t need a translator :-) (even though it was very nice to listen to him speak in Portuguese). He would be able to pass on so much more of his experiences and amazing stories to people on the tour as they certainly get a bit ‘lost in translation’. Well done Thiago. Keep up the good work. This tour was amazing, we enquires over what’s app and booked through what’s app message. We were picked up by our guide Juan, he was so lovely and kind. He was so chatty to us trying to tell us all information he could think off he answered our questions and the whole way round we felt safe, he knew everyone in the area and would say happy new year and they would all say good morning to us as we walked round. Never at one point did I not feel safe. We loved the Michael Jackson bit and the shops we visited were nice.

We had a great tour with our english guide Felipe! He managed to show the favela as a living place and explain about why they exist and also about the lives of the people living there. We felt very safe during the tour and would definitely recommend it if you want to understand more about the "real Rio".
