About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- mario m0 contributionsAmazing experience in the heart of a real Favela!Amazing tour with a super knowledgeable tour guide,Francesco. He took us from the very top of Rocinha Favela and walked us down the whole hill with safety while he was providing us with many important and valuable information about how people live their lives there and how this small city within the city of Rio actually works and breaths. All and all, it was a fantastic, amazing experience which I totally suggest to everyone! Thank you Francesco!!Written November 30, 2024
- W9826EZveronika_0 contributionsInteresting insights into real life in BrazilHighly recommend, we had great guides (Marcello and Barbara), very interesting talking about problems in Brazil, social differences. Barbara was very willing to help me (I had stomach problems due to food poisoning during the tour), she did not leave us alone and ordered a taxi from favella when we had to leave the tour earlier due to these health problems. Thank you very much.Written May 7, 2023
- MaryPoppins20200 contributionsTransport included was the metro underground, not an air conditioned bus!!!We booked the tour which was supposed to include transport on an air conditioned bus. Marcelo arrived in a small car and made an excuse about having to borrow the car because his was damaged. He then picked up another couple and we were all squashed in the car and taken to a meeting point where we had to get out and walk with our guide, Leo. Throughout the whole journey to the meeting point, we had to endure Marcelo’s political views, which whilst may be valid to mention during the tour to some extent, he came across like an extreme radical, and was totally off putting. Leo (our guide) was amazing and he gave us a brilliant tour of the favelas, with a balance of facts and insights into life in the favelas. The tour really is an eye opener and reminder of some of the contrasting lifestyles between rich and poor in the world, with leaderships and their priorities in question. Unfortunately, we discovered there was never any intention to use an air conditioned bus to transport us to or from the favelas. To get there we were squashed into a small car, and to return, we were taken on the underground metro system and left to get off at our own stops alone. Be warned: there is a fair bit of walking on the tour, mostly up and down lots of narrow steps. I have 3 chronic diseases and found much of it quite tricky to manage. The guide moves quickly and thankfully, other people in the group kept looking out for me and my husband.Written December 19, 2022
- sandyj7020 contributionsA fascinating trip to the favelasOur guide , Barbara, was very knowledgeable and interesting. She showed us the other side of the favelas, away from the headlines. It was nice to think that some money from our tour goes to help the community- particularly the children.Written November 20, 2019
- Jbois1230 contributionsGreat tour of this historical favelaI took this tour today and I must say what a great experience this was. Barbara our guide was phenomenal!! She knows so much about the favelas particularly this one. Like most people I had preconceived ideas about those districts which she changed. She made sure we felt safe the whole time by explaining the evolving safety within this community. You get a bigger picture of how criminality was developed back in the 80s and 90s which gives you a bigger picture of media’s portrayal. We got to walk through and see how they built it and the way they live. It was quite interesting. I highly recommend it. JérémyWritten November 17, 2019

- SA4LIFE10 contributionsRIO Favela Walking Tour A Must!!!!!This was an amazing eye opening experience. As Carlos the tour guide put it "seeing 2 countries in 1". I absolutely recommend it, its safe! I could relate to this as its pretty much how my country is, its a bittersweet unforgettable tour. Always good to see the diversity of countries. No holiday should be complete without doing this. Carlos you truly inspired me!Written February 12, 2019
- MadsfromNorway0 contributionsGreat favela tourWe had a great favela tour with Edson as guide. He was very communicative and friendly and showed us all the quirky spots and neighbourhoods of the favela. It felt very safe and it was interesting to see the busy every-day life of the people living there. Can abselutely recommend this tour.Written December 30, 2018
- Ripwalk0 contributionsFantastic! Don’t miss itBarbara is awesome and really makes it come alive. She has a genuine love and care for the people of the favelas. Don’t miss it! But don’t stand in the open doors of people’s homes and take photos inside as some in our group did. Treat the people with dignity and respect.Written November 25, 2018
- maranne00 contributionsMust do!We did the Rocinha favela walking tour with Carlos. It was fantastic despite the pouring rain. Carlos is a passionate advocate for the favela people and the importance of education to lift the residents out of their impoverished situation.Written November 19, 2018

- Victoria11260 contributionsExcellent TourThe tour was superb. Our guide Barbara was simply the best. She gave detailed information about the history of the favelas, took us to walk around. At no time, did I sense any fear. Actually I felt that we were in good hands. We can take pictures everywhere. People were quite friendly. I was quite apprehensive before I joined the tour. Everybody warned me against going into the crime ridden slums. But it turned out fine as long as you picked the right company to take you there.Written October 28, 2018

- Ashley D0 contributionsGreat TourThis was an incredible experience and was very interesting. Some of the homes were guarded by heavy security and no pictures were allowed making you wonder who was inside. It was crazy to see some of the poorest people on earth living in the slums with flat screen tvs and everything you would find in a typical home in america.Written August 29, 2018

Our tour guide Barbara picked us up at our hotel and gave us a quick history lesson of Brasil and Rio de Janeiro before taking us into the Rochinha community.
To be honest I was a little nervous going in but my fears quickly disappeared as we were greeted warmly by the locals and I could see the people had a lot of respect for Barbara and the work she does.
We were taken to some amazing viewpoints overlooking the city and learned of everything works in the community-of course there’s a dark side as these places are controlled by drug cartels.
I felt completely safe in Rochinha from start to finish and met some big local characters along the way.
I’d highly recommend this tour and felt at ease knowing the money from the ticket is reinvested in community initiatives such as child care and health.

Great 2h walk through Rocinha favela +1-1.5h for pick up and drop off from Zona Sul. Very informative guide and parts of the proceeds go to support local kids.
Be aware that there is a 10% card surcharge that was not communicated clearly by the owner handling the booking via WhatsApp. Also we were picked up over 30min late creating an unnecessarily stressful morning because the owner insists on handling all the messaging instead of letting the guide reach out to us directly to update on the pick up time. All things that could have been easily communicated and solved that left a bad taste.
As we shared the feedback with the owner over WhatsApp we did not hear back anymore, a pity for an otherwise solid Rio Favela experience.

Your pointless comments should not be posted in Viator reviews as you never made any steps through this platform to either reserve nor paying your reservation, as your own text shows. The misleading information about credit card price was informed to you on the very first reply you had from whatsapp, as later you appologised for not reading it. I requested the platform to exclude your review as you did not reserve the tour here on Viator. Regarding the delay, yes we were late as the traffic was particularly chaotic that morning and we wasted time waiting for people who reserved and never showed up, and commonly we spend 10 -15 minutes to handle this kind of misbehavior.

We did this tour in January 2020 and I have to say it was an absolute highlight for us. We managed to arrange this on the same day and the organisation was extremely smooth. Our guide was so knowledgeable and I really felt I had learnt something on this tour. This is a must when in Rio so don’t miss out!!! I also felt perfectly safe...

Mateus (apologies if not spelled correctly!) was an informative guide who showed us around Rocinha Favela, giving us a good understanding and context of the area.
We got to see some amazing viewing points and also watched a local community group perform.
Only feedback would be that the tour should outline when booking that you have to get the metro back to where your staying from the favela, or arrange your own transport as many on our group weren't aware of this.
Overall a good experience and the guide answered all the groups questions. It's also important to say we all felt very safe throughout the tour.

Thanks for sharing, I will forward this to Matheus, he will be glad to see.
Regarding the metro, sometimes we come back by metro, we pay the tickets and come along, and sometimes we come back on a rented van, this is not a rule, relies on group size and logistics like the pick up and drop off places. Thanks anyway.

This is was a very interesting tour that gave lots of insight into the “real life” in Rio. If you want to immerse yourself into the Brazilian culture and understand more about the inner city life while at the same time get views of the favela that will capture your mind then this tour is definitely worth it. Marcelo who is a pioneer of favela tours in Rio. picked us up at our location, and brought us to the entrance of the Rocinha favela while giving us a brief history of how this favela tour was conceived. From there, our tour guide was Leo who took us all over the favela. I give both Marcelo and Leo 5 out of 5 stars on this tour. It was very safe and educational!

Very good trip, if You want to see real Rio. The favela was safe, but still you get 100% of the experience. The way the tour guide was talking was very intriguing, interesting and (in a good way) eerie. He took us thru some of the main streets, some of the narrow dark streets and corridors (which was eerie), so it was a full experience. We also stopped by at a school whichs is also funded by this tour. We could say hi and wave at the kids (it was so sweet). Hotel pickup and good car with AC. We also got to buy beautiful favela art. I really advise you to invest in this trip abd not only see and feel the favela life, but also reflect and be grateful for your life and share a smile. Big props to the tour guide, who spoke perfect english, was very professional!

Marcelo and Leo gave a highly personalised tour of Rocinha favela in Rio. Easy pick up from our hotel and a small group. Marcelo gave a background of the favela whilst we were driven there and then we were dropped off and Leo took over, walking us through the favela and meeting various people, including an after school club, local artists and handicraft makers, etc. We even stopped for a drink of the local fire water at one point. It was an eye opening time but at no time did we feel unsafe as we were told what to look out for and what to do and not to do. We also had a guide who was respectful of the locals and that was reciprocated. Overall I would say an essential trip to see the 'other' side of Rio and real life for many Brazilians. Note that there is a fair bit of walking involved, up and down many steps. Also you will get a free pass back on the underground to the nearest stop to your hotel.

This is absolutely a MUST DO tour that shines a spotlight on how a large number residents actually live in comparison to the glitzy parts of Rio that tourists usually only see.
Both tour guides (one on drive up and the other on the walking tour) were excellent in presenting the real underlying issues in Brazil, incredible insights into Favela life and respectfully walking us through the area.
I took my older mother and we felt completely safe at all times.
Some of the funds from the tour are donated back into the community programs, which we were pleased to know.
Highly highly recommend!!!

This is the best tour I have done in a long time and could not recommend it highly enough. It was a thoroughly worthwhile experience, I learned a lot and gained a new perspective on life in the favelas. Our guide Barbara was excellent and at no point did I feel unsafe.

This was a really great and insightful tour. It is perfect for participants who are naturally curious and want to learn more about the place they are visiting, rather than going to the beach, shopping, or on aerial trams.
The first part of the tour was a little bit confusing, as there were five of us in a small car, including two passengers who spoke no English or Portuguese and talked over Marcelo (in Polish) the entire time. Once we got to the favela and were handed over to Mateos, the tour got really interesting. Mateos showed us the favela through his eyes, shared his experience as a resident, and patiently answered all our questions. And we had so many questions! I was also delighted that the tour ended with a subway ride as it was fun to ride the Rio subway. I would highly recommend this tour. Mateos is smart, friendly, and calm and was the perfect guide.

Thanks for sharing it, Matheus is new on our team, and as local, just as you pointed he can share much of his personal experience living there. I actually dont speak a word of polish, and yes I remember, they did not speak much English, we made our best to comunicate though.

Salve.

The guide( Luiz? Lewis?) was Brazilian but spoke PERFECT English so the ideal combination. Marcelo (owner?) also speaks word perfect English - you will have no problem at all if booked onto an English speaking tour.
