Quirky and fun
This little tour is well worth it. Renata our guide was knowlegeable and funny and passionate about her city.
She showed us how to use the metro and buses. We visited a total of 6 stores, all with something unique and delightful to offer- my favourite was a place where deaf people are employed. I spent a lot of money on some one-of-a-kind items and enjoyed the experience. Thank you Renata

A lovely afternoon, it I felt like a friend was showing me her city
Sep 2018 • Solo
I was visiting Rio for a few days by myself and wanted to book tours as a way of seeing the city with company; I chose Urban Adventures because I have travelled with their sister company Intrepid. I did this tour about an hour after I arrived in Rio and was a bit anxious because I knew this was going to be just me and the guide and wasn’t sure how comfortable that would be. I really needn’t have worried, I had a lovely afternoon with Renata and a fabulous introduction to Rio - I felt I was being shown around by a friend.

The tour takes you to outlets which sell stuff made in Brazil, interesting, quirky places that I enjoyed visiting whether or not I wanted to buy anything. And along the way I got to ride on the Metro and to wander around Santa Teresa and see the fabulous street art. What’s not to like?!

Because it was a public holiday the market area was closed although we went to that area to visit a workshop. This was the first stop and at the time I felt a little surprised the tour had been scheduled for a public holiday. By the end of the tour I was very glad it had; it was the only time I could do it and I certainly wouldn’t have missed it.

This was a walking tour (so make sure you have comfortable shoes) which uses public transport or occasionally taxis to get between neighbourhoods (Renata seemed to have discretion to use the most sensible means of transport for the situation); this was similar to the other tours I did with Urban Adventures. This is a model which shows you much more than just the favourite tourist sights, it gives you a feel for the city which belongs to the locals not just the tourists. Refreshments of some description were included in all of the tours I did giving a taste of local culture. On this tour, we went for a beer in a bar in Santa Teresa, a favourite with the locals, a couple of whom also joined in our conversation. It was a really enjoyable end to a lovely afternoon.
And as for my concerns about being on my own with a guide, it was an added bonus to be able to chat one to one with Renata; what better way to learn about Rio and its culture than a real conversation with a local?

I’d highly recommend this tour and Renata as a guide and companion.

Amazing Art & Shopping Tour with Renata F.
May 2018 • Couples
My husband had a business trip to Rio at the end of May, so I tagged along for the trip. I did 2 tours solo, and we did 2 tours as a couple during the 4 days we were there. The Made in Rio tour was by far my favorite! My tour guide, Renata, was the main reason why. She was prompt at the meeting spot, friendly and informative. Her English was excellent, and while I had been cautioned about the potential for street crime in Rio, I felt completely safe with her at all times.

After our early afternoon meet up at the Copacabana Palace Hotel, we took a quick stroll to the subway. Renata is a great guide who takes the time to make even the journey to our different destinations informative. She took the time to explain how to purchase subway tickets and gave me a brief overview of the subway system in Rio, should my husband and I want to use it later during our visit. The subway was clean and well air-conditioned and ran on time. We hopped off the subway and made our way to our 1st stop on the art and shopping tour, strolling through an open air market along the way. When I showed an interested in a candy shop, Renata was flexible and let me pop in to pick up a few Brazilian versions of favorite treats.

Thru an unmarked door, we entered a narrow building and climbed stairs to a small work room with 3 women. All ladies who are hearing impaired, these artisans were creating home goods right before our eyes. Colorful coasters, bookmarks, magnets, and placemats were being made. Using prints of Brazilian artist, these ladies were creating usable works of art. The shop owner's son explained how the enterprise began as we watched the artisans work. I was able to select prints and then watch them being turned into items I now use everyday in my home.

Next, we taxied over to the Santa Teresa neighborhood. This a hip, artsy area, and the buildings and shop show it. Our 2nd stop was a shop that sells goods created by indigenous people of Brazil. Seeds, grasses, wood, and fiber were used to make amazing jewelry, baskets, and even sunglasses! While I was there Renata grabbed the shop owner/manager on her way out. She was a lovely lady who's husband is an anthopologist who studies and works with Brazil's indigenous tribes. While I shopped I learned how citizens of European descent in Brazil are slowly changing their perception of indigenous peoples and how these tribes are moving away from a subsistence way of life as bourgeoning artisans. The goods sold in this shop were high quality, varied and usable and/or wearable works of art. Everytime I slip on my reclaimed wood frame sunglasses (with Ray-Ban lenses), I think about this cool little shop and smile.

Our last shopping stop, was a gift shop that sold a wide variety of items. All made in Brazil. Renata has a great "touch" with people. She let me wander around checking things out, but was quick to step up and give me background on an item if I showed an interested in it. I picked up a lovely painted shirt created by the shop's artist owners and some fun hair accessories accented with flowers created out of fabric.

After the shops started closing, Renata ended our tour at a neighborhood hangout where we had a yummy cocktail. My cell phone battery was dead, so she went above and beyond, setting up my Uber ride back to the hotel for me. My husband was delighted that I'd gotten my art "fix" and my shopping done, without him having to tag along. When he asked me if I felt any pressure to buy something at any of the shops, I could honestly say, "Not at all!" I felt privileged to learn about the origins of the goods and the history of the Santa Teresa neighborhood. The excellent guide, quality of the workmanship, and variety of shops made this my favorite tour in Rio!

Wonder way to see a different side of Santa Teresa
Mar 2018
With the expert guidance of Renata F, I spent a great afternoon (despite the rain!) learning about different artists and visiting a range of shops, to buy some unique gifts for friends & family back home. I was able to learn about the area of Santa Teresa, and the history of the artists that have made this area their home. I highly recommend this walking tour as a way to see a different side to Rio de Janiero.
