I really enjoyed your Kamakura tour of the temples and shrines. As a Japanese, I was amazed at your local knowledge of the Kamakura period, much of which many of us Japanese people don’t even know about. More than that, it was a peaceful, relaxing, easygoing day out. Thank you so much!

Great Tour Guide , highly recommend it !
I went in the month of June with my friends and I was very surprise with the culture knowledge Peter has on the Kamakura and also the places we visited were amazing! I highly recommended to anyone who has the intention to visit Kamakura for the first time and also even if you have visit it already Peter knows the off the track temples too. We were very satisfied with the tour and it felt as if we were part of this beautiful place.

This tour was exactly what I was looking for. Tours that I previously took at different locations were big group tours that were enjoyable, but limited in information provided due to group size. This was one on one with just my husband and I. Virgil is very knowledgeable about the history of the locations that we visited. He also told us about little known details that we wouldn’t have known from any brochures. We visited Tsurugaoka Hachimangu shrine, the great Buddha, and Hasedera temple. He also suggested a small soba restaurant for lunch where they make their own soba noodles. Delicious and worth a visit on its own. If you are unsure whether you want to book this tour, book it. You won’t be disappointed.

Thank you, Rita, for such a glowing review! I myself enjoyed showing you around tremendously and was absolutely delighted to share whatever knowledge I have with such warm-hearted, intelligent, and appreciative guests. I will live in hope that someday our paths will cross again! All the best...Virgil

This tour in Kamakura was the thing we were looking forward the most to doing and we were so impressed with our tour guide Virgil. He was so knowledgeable on all the different sights we went to, nothing was too much trouble and one could see he wanted to please. We would highly recommend this tour to anyone thinking of visiting Kamakura.

It was no trouble at all showing you around Kamakura and sharing my knowledge of history and culture; on the contrary, I derived immense pleasure from your warm-hearted company! Thank you!

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our experience with Virgil and the Samurai Phototours! Virgil was incredibly knowledgeable and excited about sharing the rich and interesting history of Kamakura. We visited Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, Komachi-dori, the Great Buddha, and Hasedera Temple. As he guided us through each stop, he told us about the history, context and stories behind each monument. We walked away having learning a ton about japan’s history, the culture and traditions here, and about the shogun empires in Kamakura.

I also need to commend Virgil on being generous with his time and being flexible on our tour. We were unable to make our original date last minute and Virgil graciously offered to move our tour date to the next day. He couldn’t have been more communicative and accommodating.

We had the most enlightening day with Virgil. It was like getting to know Kamakura with a dear relative, one who knows so much history, anecdotes and interesting facts about Japan, the culture, the legends, the history that just makes you want to hear every bit. He was incredibly patient and gracious with our 4 teen children, they absolutely loved him, we all did.

I unknowingly booked a private tour and was surprised but I could not have imagined spending it with a better person. The private tour was perfect, allowed me to explore at my own pace, and have a natural pace to the day, which is sometimes difficult when you have a strict schedule in group tours. Virgil is knowledgable and thoughtful, curious about the world and people which added so much personalization to this tour. Kamakura is such a beautiful little city with a rich history, and Virgil brought that to life.

While this tour provider (Samurai Phototours) does have some good reviews, please beware as they are not reliable. About seven hours after I booked the tour I got an email from them telling me to cancel my tour and get a refund, then to book for another date as he had previously given the tour spot to someone else, but not updated the calendar. He said he would check with the person who had previously booked and ask if they would “share” their tour and get back to me. I heard nothing from him. I emailed him through Trip Advisor the following day. Still nothing. Finally I called the number given. No answer and no way to leave a message. If you want a reliable provider look elsewhere.

We received this booking a day before the requested date, which unfortunately had already been booked. Upon receipt of the reservation, we immediately advised the reviewer to cancel it before the expiration of the 24-hour grace period for cancellation so he would not be charged by the booking agency. At the same time, we informed him that we would ask the person with the earlier booking if she would be willing to share the tour with him, though we warned him that this was most unlikely as our tours are restricted to just one booking. We did send a message to the reserved guest but she never replied because as it turned out she was out at sea on a cruise and didn't check her email., Meanwhile, the reviewer cancelled his booking but we didn't hear again from him .Not having heard from him, we presumed he had either lost interest or found another tour. If he did call or send a message, as he says he did, it was already on the day of the tour and I had turned off my phone and email. to better attend to the tour guest.. Our apologies for whatever inconvenience this might have caused the reviewer.

Virgil was amazing! When you make a reservation to take a tour you never know who you will get and if they will really know the area and its history. Virgil is a writer and historian and absolutely loves the Kamakura area. He has a wealth of knowledge and interesting facts about the area and its history. His English is excellent, his heart is warm and he deeply cared about giving us a fantastic tour! This only allows for “5 Stars”, but Virgil really deserves at least 6!
If we ever return to Kamakura, we will engage Virgil again.
Thank you for a wonderful day!!

Virgil was an excellent guide and showed us so many things we would never have discovered on our own. The historical background he provided for every site we visited was very meaningful. Also, he shared his life story, which was multilingual and multicultural and fascinating. Be sure to ask him about it when you book this trip! Highly recommend!!!
