About
The staff, with a rich knowledge of the city, will help make a special memory for your trip. We will take you to see interesting things you would not find in guidebooks or on websites. The rickshaw's speed is faster than walking but slower than cycling, which makes it a comfortable, wonderful ride. Enjoy Japanese history, traditions, and the seasonal beauties from a rickshaw with our staff's omotenashi (hospitality).

Going around Kamakura with Joichiro is one of the highlights of our trip to Japan! We wanted to see the bamboo gardens and we didn’t have much time to get there. Joichiro saved the day! He got us there quickly and we made it before they closed. +Funny, interesting and took great photos. #recomended!

Ebisuya is a rickshaw (Japanese traditional human-pulled taxi) group which offers guided tours down to very narrow alleys.

We firstly made a reservation thru phone call and asked for any driver (rickshaw man) who speaks English. The meeting point was "The second gate" (Ni-no-to-ri-i) near Kamakura station. The man spoke pretty good English since he says he studied in the US. After a short consultation about where to go, we got on the rickshaw. Rickshaws seem to be treated as a wheeled vehicle by the law as he followed the traffic rule so carefully. The seat is perched on the big wheels so we could enjoy a good sight. We visited some historical sites and beautiful viewpoints and took pictures of us there. Overall, we loved this fantastic traditional experience very much.

I recommend to take a tour for more than 30 mins. If you don't have any idea where to go, just let him go anywhere good places. You can have a great time with a soft breeze.

My aunt and I had such a wonderful rickshaw ride in Kamakura with Satoshi Arai. He spoke a little English which was super helpful for us! Along the ride we had a very nice conversation, he told us about each place we stopped to visit as well as little tid bits of information along the way. It was so fun to learn a few Japanese words from him during the ride and he took our picture a couple times so we have some great keepsakes from the ride. We absolutely loved the ride and loved Satoshi! Highly recommended!!

Two years ago during a brief stint in Kyoto I saw in passing a rickshaw (a Japanese traditional human-pulled taxi) but I didn’t have the time to enquire about the upbeat opportunity; instead, I caught the train back to Tokyo, and left the country the next day.

However, the idea of seeing the city via “Ebisuya” never left my mind.

So recently during a stopover, it was time for a redo!

Reiko and I didn’t make a reservation via the phone. We googled “Ebisuya” tours and took the fast train to Kamakura (Japan’s first feudal capital) station, one hour away, and met at "The second gate" (Ni-no-to-ri-i). She speaks Japanese so I had the best of both worlds. But if you don’t have a pal, the guides speak the universal language.

Each trip is customizable based on your interests and after discussing the length of time you want to tour, you’ll get a taste for the charming atmosphere of this 800-year-old Japanese city, passing by its ancient temples, peaceful shrines, and historic structures.

Among the sights we saw on our plush two-hour excursion starting at the large red torii at the center of town: Kotohikibashi, the lavish green bamboo forest, the Myohonji temple, the suburbs of Kamakura (where you can see the every day life of the citizens), and the iconic Daibutsu, or the Great Buddha statue. In addition, Takuya (our guide) recommended a fabulous shop where I purchased “tabi” which are the traditional socks dating back to the 15th century.

What can I add that you may not know to convince you to take this tour?

The view from the rickshaw seat was different from that of walking or riding in a car. Blessed by a cool breeze (we used the blanket provided) and the gorgeous sunny weather, we rode in style perched comfortably in the seat upright on two large wheels. It was a totally unexpected perspective of the city we were gifted. Our guide followed all of the traffic laws, graciously helped us in and out of the rickshaw at various sites and showed us beautiful viewpoints. (Did I mention he was a photography wizard?) He knew EXACTLY where we should stand to get the best photos. In addition, he was personable, funny, and extremely knowledgeable.

Four words: Lots. Of. Big. Laughs.

I was a docent in my former life so I know all about tour guiding! Plus, I’ve traveled to more than forty countries and have taken numerous guided adventures…Takuya Yoshida did a stellar job!

There are a variety of tours available depending on your travel schedule and please note that even Reiko, who originally thought this was too "touristy" loved the experience and confirmed she would do it again on my next visit in another city.

Overall, this rick ride was full of discovery and worth the Japanese yen.

A friend and I decided to try the ride to the Great Buddha. Our driver, Kenjiro, was great in taking us off the beaten track with our 30 minute ride. We stopped at several places, with Kenjiro providing English information as well as snapping pictures. Even my Japanese friend learned a few new things. The scenery was great and I have to give Kenjiro credit for pulling us through the streets of Kamakura. They offer a round trip option, but we elected for a one way ride. Great for a history lesson.

I used Ebisuya jinrikisha (rickshaw) service in Kamakura to take my friend around Kamakura and it was worth every penny of the ride especially when time is tight.

Shotaro Inoue-san took us around small back streets, rare locations that only locals would know and shared very interesting information about the locations sites.

I'd recommend this service to people to anyone visiting Japan, even Japanese tourists.

Very much looking forward to using this service again.

One of the planned activities on our 10 Day Classic Japan Tour with Super Values Tour Company was this rickshaw ride. It was perfect. Not too long or short. It was about 15 minutes long. Our rickshaw driver, Noel, was great. He stopped at various points and took great photos of us along his route. He was knowledgeable, friendly and gave us great service.

If you get a chance to get a rickshaw ride I'd highly suggest it!
