Whether you’re just visiting Old Town or are proud residents like us, Manumission Tours is an excellent way to explore Alexandria’s rich and diverse history. In one 90 minute walking tour, we learned more about Old Town’s past than we have in nearly five years living here. John’s tour unlocked a few of the remarkable stories hidden behind Alexandria’s historic facades of black Alexandrian’s successes and struggles and the communities that aided their journey to freedom.

Our group was a mix of young couples, adults and a family with middle school aged kids and everyone was engaged and entertained throughout our tour. If you’re looking for a unique experience and a new perspective on American history, I can’t recommend Manumission Tours more highly!

[COVID-19 Review]

John our tour guide took every precaution and we felt very safe. He used a microphone and speaker that made it easy to hear his every word while maintaining safe social distance. Everyone wore masks and he made sure to stop in the shadiest spots and set a very easy walking pace along our mostly downhill route to keep us as comfortable as possible on hot and humid day.

Pamela was a great guide- very personable and knowledgeable. She made everyone comfortable from the start. She taught us about the local area and its history- particularly the life of slaves and their pursuit of freedom. Her stories were relevant to our study of racial justice and helped to make the history come alive as we stood on the grounds where events took place and people carried on their lives. She brought us some very moving moments that all students of American history should be aware of. I appreciated that she could be heard by our whole group of 25 people during this walking tour and was very open to questions.

My "Freedom's Fight in Alexandria" guide, John Taylor Chapman, founded Manumission Tour Co. He also happens to be a member of the Alexandria City Council and an Alexandria native. Not only was John extremely knowledgeable and insightful about Alexandria's African American history, and happy to answer my never-ending questions, he clearly was proud of his community. My tour took place yesterday. I was so engaged by John's stories of enslaved and formerly enslaved African Americans, and those who helped free them, that after our tour I visited Alexandria's Archaeology Museum and as soon as I got home I jumped online and continued to explore Alexandria's African American history and, today, saw the movie "Harriet." I would recommend a Manumission tour to anyone and look forward to signing up for John's future offerings, confident they will be just as meaningful.

The Underground Railroad tour throughout Old Town Alexandria was definitely 5 stars. It was wonderful and we learned so much about that time period, about the people, and about the escape of many enslaved persons in Alexandria and elsewhere in Virginia via the Under Ground Railroad. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable, courteous and professional. He was also very considerate of everyone and he took the time to make sure we all could here him and see the historical sites.

This is was wonderful and such informative experience. It is a must for anyone visiting the Washington DC area. It's easy for DC to overshadow Alexandria, but to truly understand the Black American experience through enslavement, Alexandria a must. Manumission Tours did an incredible job of linking and narrating this history in public. What we were told on this experience was nothing like what Alexandria's public memorials and King Street Trolley narrate. This is absolute must!

John was a great tour guide, knowledgeable and articulate. He used a voice protection device so tour members could hear while social distancing. We heard stories of many brave citizens of Alexandria including slaves, free black men and abolitionists. Highly recommend this tour.

We had a terrific experience on this black history tour learning more about the lesser publicized experiences of Africans and African Americans, enslaved and freed. We are relatively new to the Alexandria area and greatly enjoyed learning about the history of the black community here. Would highly recommend to anyone visiting or living in Alexandria, particularly schools and families. John Chapman was an amazing tour guide !

We thoroughly enjoyed our 90 minute private walking tour around Old Town Alexandria. Buildings I would have passed by before came to life as we learned about the people and events associated with the sites. Great job by tour guide Pamela!

This was one of the best tours I've ever taken! I cannot say enough wonderful things about the experience that I had. Our tour guide, Pamela Neal was punctual, approachable, knowledgeable and presented the information with confidence. I especially liked how Pamela shared the history of Alexandria and encouraged us to think about the conditions that motivated historical figures to behave the way they did and make the decisions that they made. I highly recommend this tour for anyone looking to learn more about American history in a full and honest form.

Pamela was awesome. I loved learning about the history of Alexandria and the role that African American and formerly enslaved people played in the making of the area. Our guide was intentional about sharing random factoids that connected to some of the places we passed that may not have been necessarily part of the tour but were along the route. She also made sure to show off things that many of us pass by without thinking about but never noticed the quirky or unusual. I love learning the history of places I visit or in this case a place that I frequent. If you are driving do remember that the tour ends at the Alexandria waterfront so you will need to go back up the hill to get to your vehicle if you park it at the beginning of the tour.
